Some people call her the most important figure in the history of Hollywood costume design, to others she is the style maven who showed millions of women how to dress for success. But to me, Edith Head will always be the mistress of transformation. In the words of one of her star friends: “If Cinderella had Edith Head, she’d never have needed a Fairy Godmother.”

“Some people need sequins, others don’t,” Edith Head liked to say. Well, when she dressed Barbara Stanwyck for her role as burlesque stripper ‘Sugarpuss O’Shea’ (‘Ball of fire’, 1941), Edith showered the star in sparkles. Chameleon-like Stanwyck was a hugely successful actress; by 1944 she had become the highest-paid woman in the United States. With her outspoken preference for younger men, she was a cougar avant la lettre. “The boy's got a lot to learn and I've got a lot to teach,” she said about her lover, actor Robert Taylor.

Where the ʻQueen of Cupsʼ meets the ʻDress Doctorʼ TH E GOLDEN COM BINATION
In art school, many years ago during a nude model drawing class, I had a life changing insight: What if I, as an artist, used a woman’s body as my canvas? If you make a painting, someone will hang it on their wall. If you design a chair, someone will sit on it. But if you design lingerie, someone will wear it, and by doing so, complete your art! I had found my mission.

and TV shows. This way, she could directly influence the look of millions of women with her practical tips and brilliant one-liners. What was Edith’s secret? Well, fit always came first. That’s how she earned her nickname ‘the dress doctor’: by using her almost surgical precision to help her ‘patients’ look their very best. Nobody was better at helping women with their ‘problem areas’; actress Barbara Stanwyck even credited Edith for saving her career by creating figure-correcting designs that finally landed the actress more glamorous roles. Then, there was Edith’s elegant signature style: clean, simple lines and a monochromatic palette- she felt that bright colours and wild patterns were distracting, both on film and in real life. And very importantly, all her designs were created from a feminine point of view. “Fit the dress to the girl, not the girl to the dress,” she used to say. At Edith’s funeral, her dear friend Bette Davis thanked her for never imposing a costume on her. And there you have it, Edith’s own Golden Combination. At first glance, the stern-looking costume designer -dark glasses, buttoned-up grey suits- might not have much in common with me, a flamboyant lingeriedesigner in killer heels. But look more deeply, and you see that our missions are almost identical: to give you confidence through an excellent fit and a design that is elegant and flattering from a feminine point of view. Enough confidence to explore my motto: dare to be. And then, oh, the places you’ll go!

In bed with Arianne As far as I am concerned, there is only one heiress to Edith Head’s throne, and that is the magnificent Arianne Phillips (53), twice Oscar-nominated costume designer and Madonna’s favorite style-collaborator. Like Edith, she is a tastemaker and visionary in both film and fashion. And just like her legendary predecessor, she is a feminist icon in her own right. I had the rare chance to interview Arianne and ask her about Madonna, feminism in Hollywood and why she thinks lingerie is ‘everything’. “We definitely do NOT like to hide it!”

With her smoldering role in ‘The postman always rings twice’ (1946) Lana Turner became the leading lady of Film Noir... Dressed all in white! For this white version of my Leading Strings design, I was inspired by this platinum bombshell’s icy looks and cool sex appeal. But I also love Lana for her shameless appetite for men. “I planned on having one husband and seven children, but it turned out the other way around,” she once declared. Not surprisingly, when Edith Head put Lana in a sheer, vampy night gown in ‘Who’s got the action’ (1962), it sparked a huge trend and many copies were made. This season, lead the way as a femme fatale in white. Dare to be voracious!

Dame de Paris - plum truffle GET DR ESSED
Sexual rebel and icon Mae West was dressed by Edith Head for ‘She done him wrong’ (1933), in which she plays nightclub owner Lady Lou, dripping in diamonds and oneliners (which she usually wrote herself!). With bawdy wisecracks like “When I'm good I'm good... but when I'm bad, I'm better,” this legendary vamp put the fun in feminism, long before Amy Shumer. West was also one of the first Hollywood stars to remain in strict control of her work, her image and her money. This season, wear my Dame de Paris in

Gloria - grey suit GET DR ESSED
This season, be the leading lady of your own Film Noir in power-grey herringbone and dashing menswear details. I was inspired by two legendary Hollywood ladies in grey. First of all Oscar-winning costume designer Edith Head, whose preferred uniform was a grey herringbone skirt suit, neutral enough to avoid competing with the stars she ased, snazzy enough to look like a pro. But also sultry screen goddess Lauren Bacall, famous for her sexy growl, sharp wit and gentleman-inspired style. The way she wore grey tweed was in a sexy vamp-glamorous way, often combining it with a slash of red lipstick. Snazzy or sexy, these two power ladies show how glorious grey can be.

Space Odyssey - evening blue GET DR ESSED
Remember that song, ‘Bette Davis’ eyes’? Well, this tiny powerhouse with the piercing blue eyes was not afraid to get in touch with her inner bitch to play legendary roles like Queen Elizabeth and Baby Jane Hudson, creating a completely new kind of screen heroine (Davis would eventually become the first woman to receive the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award). “I am just too much,” the two-time Oscar winner liked to announce proudly. Not surprisingly, Davis got along great with the equally fierce Edith Head who won an Oscar for dressing Davis in the 1950 classic ‘All about Eve’. I was inspired by Bette Davis’ unapologetic fierceness and hypnotizing blue eyes when I recreated my adventurous Space Odyssey design in sapphire tones and a mesmerizing pattern. This season, radiate star quality in true blue. Dare to be ‘too much’!

Rosemond - rose GET DR ESSED
Liz Taylor lived for love and loved to dazzle with her vast jewelry collection. “Big girls need big diamonds,” she liked to say. The violet-eyed vamp was just as shameless about enjoying her sensuality, and when she became the first woman to be paid $1m for a movie (‘Cleopatra’, 1963) she gave female emancipation a glamorous, hyper-feminine face. Taylor and Edith Head were very close friends, sharing an obsession with anything that glitters. Edith won an Oscar for dressing Liz in ‘A place in the sun’, and for Liz’s turn as presenter of the 1969 Oscars, Edith made her an incredibly sexy low-cut gown to show off her huge diamond pendant (a present from Richard Burton). Liz shone even brighter than the diamond... Smolder like Liz in luscious pink and decadent gold. Dare to live for love!

“Yes, we can be mothers, working women AND sexual beings all at the same time!” — Gwyneth Paltrow
The pin up (thankfully) changed all that. During WW2 many female Hollywood stars had posed for pin up pictures to boost the moral for ‘the boys’ overseas. The most popular ones, Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth, weren’t just curvy; they looked fit, strong and radiant. In one word: healthy. How they kept their stunning figures? Hours and hours of dancing. “Dancing is the best way to keep your legs trim,” Betty Grable used to say. (Over in France, femme fatale Brigitte Bardot had a similar regime: “My favourite exercise is cha cha cha!”.) Swimming was another way to get those desirable streamlined curves, thanks to the success of competitive swimmer and actress Esther Williams who liked to say: “Whoever heard of flat chested mermaids?” Sure enough, throughout the decades, women have struggled to keep up with Hollywood’s beauty ideals, often subjecting themselves to plastic surgery and ridiculous diets. But Hollywood has managed to get a lot of women moving, too! Think of Hollywood-fitness You may not know this, but long before the invention

‘Trumbo’ is a fun movie about a serious subject. It has it all: superb acting, a moving, real-life story and fabulous costumes. Perhaps more importantly, it is an ode to the freedom of speech, so very relevant in these times of increasing fear-mongering.
In 1953, costume designer Edith Head won her fi fth (!) Oscar for ‘Roman Holiday’, the hugely popular modern fairytale starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. Audrey Hepburn took home an Academy Award herself and the fi lm collected a third Oscar for its screenplay. The credited writers were Ian McLellan Hunter and John Dighton. There were was just one problem: Ian McLellan Hunter did not write a single word of the fi lm.

Trumbo’s career would survive and even flourish. He was accepted back into the Writers Guild of America, and was credited on all subsequent scripts. In 1975, a year before he died, he was officially recognized as the rightful winner of the Oscar for The Brave One and received a statuette. But it wasn’t until 2011 that his name was restored to the credits of Roman Holiday, over 40 years after his death. What struck me about the movie, was how through all these ups and downs Trumbo never lost his paid a price for the stubbornness that was a source Trumbo’s story has a ‘happy ending’. When Kirk

Peekaboo - black GET DR ESSED
With her peekaboo hairstyle and femme fatale roles, Veronica Lake was Hollywood’s sultriest sex symbol. Privately however, she was known as The Bitch, and proud of it! After purchasing an airplane for her husband, André de Toth, she earned her pilot's license in 1946. (When leaving him later, she flew solo between Los Angeles and New York.) Edith Head’s extravagant wardrobe for ‘I married a Witch’ (1942) perfectly matched Lake’s bewitching beauty; using black lace and nude silk, Edith played a tantalizing game of wardrobepeekaboo.

Latin Lady - grape purple GET DR ESSED
This season, shake it like Rita Hayworth! With her trademark dark red hair and Latin sensuality Rita – official nickname ‘The Love Goddess’ - gave Hollywood some much-needed exotic glamour. Rita started performing at a young age as a flamenco dancer, together with her Spanish father, and became Fred Astair’s favorite dance partner. She sizzled in many movies but what made her truly unforgettable was her explosive, single-gloved striptease in ‘Gilda’ (1964). Edith Head loved dressing her, and made sure that whatever Rita wore (like the spectacular black dress with embroidered jewels in ‘Separate tables’, 1958), it would highlight the motion of her figure.

Welcome to the Signature Collection A SHOWC A SE OF T H E U N IQU E LY SE DUC T I V E WOR K OF DUTCH LINGER IE DESIGNER M A R LIES DEK K ERS.
Spanning more than 20 years in time, Marlies’ illustrious career in lingerie design has always been dominated by her ambition to frame the wearer’s beauty at every opportunity, thereby boosting the confidence of the many women who adore her distinctive designs. As a self-proclaimed feminist and someone who has championed the plight of women around the world for many years, Marlies literally makes it her business to conceptualise and design from a female perspective, rather than with the sexual gratification of men in mind. The result, epitomised by the output of the Signature collection, is a celebration of the female form - with all of its perfect imperfections. It’s an approach, born of Marlies’ deep understanding of the female psyche and her formidable creative talents, that has won her many followers over the years. So, lose yourself in the pages that follow, and embark on a journey that always ends at the same destination for the wearer of Marlies’ designs: a supreme sense of self-confidence.

Embrace your dark side W H Y I L OV E H A L L OW E E N
Imagine if there were a night where it would be socially acceptable to indulge your deepest darkest dreams. An annual opportunity for women to dress like their sexual fantasies - be it a blood-thirsty vampire or a flirtatious nun - without getting ‘slut shamed’. Wouldn’t that be amazing? Well there is a night just like that, and it happens to be one of my favorite moments of the year: Halloween.

It reminded me of what the great philosopher/writer George Bataille used to say: “Extreme seductiveness is at the boundary of horror.” And it hit me how in order to become a complete person, you need to embrace your dark side, at least once a year. So here’s to shamelessly shedding your inhibitions and looking fabulous while you do so! Happy Halloween!

Can I still be a feminist? Of course! Because ladies, that is the whole point of this Third Feminist wave: this time, we can have it all! Growing up in the Catholic South of Holland, it was one of the first stories i ever heard: the story of Eve and the apple. It was all Eve’s fault, i was told; because she disobeyed God by taking a bite, we were banned from Paradise, and cursed to become old and die. End of story. But not for me! I would imagine Eve standing up to the mightiest power, and i would feel a rush of excitement in my belly. To change your destiny with such a bold act! Since then, I’ve built up an extended catalogue of Xmas tunes. From 2000 Miles to Jingle Bell Rock; anything goes. A few years ago, my iPod with all my Xmas-music on it stopped working! Complete panic! My then-husband had a full-time job restoring my collection (interesting detail: this was mid-October…). And so, while Zilver and I dance to our favorite tunes and sip made-from-scratch hot chocolate, we turn my house into Santa’s Secret Village, just like my parents used to do. I’m hit by precious childhood memories: the warmth, the lights, the way my hardworking parents - usually so frugal - would go out of

Well, whether you’ll be packing in the action or lounging with your lover, I’ve got you covered, all year round! Being the epitome of Gothic architecture, the Parisian Lady of the 14th century combines a sense of the divine with stunning graphic lines. Graceful arches and elegant bows are her trademarks. An aspiration to Heaven is her belief.

T R I A NGL E BL ACK
My Triangle collection is designed for ladies in favour of freedom. I was inspired by Maria Callas and her conviction that love can never be chained. Callas’ liberal views on love made her part of one of the most illustrious love triangles in history. The queen of opera refused a ring of Aristoteles Onassis, because she believed that ultimately ‘every man wants to dominate his wife’. And thus she was forced to embrace the bittersweet of female liberation: the sweet of standing her ground, the bitter of losing the love of her life to another woman, fashion icon Jacky Kennedy.

SPAC E ODYS SEY BL ACK
My Space Odyssey collection is designed for ladies aiming for the stars. I was inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’. Kubrick pays tribute to the big questions in life: why are we here and what is our destiny? This courageous voyage transcending time and space, reminded me of the heroic journeys of women on a mission. It’s what I wish for you: boldly go where no one has gone before to understand and fulfi ll your destiny.

L E A DI NG ST R I NG S BL ACK
My Leading Strings collection is designed for ladies in the mood for play. I was inspired by the sensuality of leading strings. A girl’s best friends because these little black necklaces are your perfect aphrodisiac. And who doesn’t like some requisites here and there? As I always like to say: ‘Use diamonds to feel glamorous, use straps ‘n strings to get amorous.’

SP I DE R BL ACK
My Spider collection is designed for ladies on the hunt. I was inspired by the spider and her hunting skills. In many traditions the spider is celebrated as a totem of strong female energy. And yes, a spider surely gets what she wants. She catches her victims with carefully woven webs, confidently awaiting her prey, knowing the right moment to strike. Strong and secure. Defi nitely my favourite spirit animal.

GL OR I A BL ACK PI NSTR IPE
My Gloria collection is designed for ladies taking the lead. I was inspired by the female gangster movie ‘Gloria’. A groundbreaking piece of art in the history of fi lm and feminism. I remember watching this movie as a young woman. I can still feel the satisfaction of fi nally seeing a female lead (Gena Rowland) portrayed as strong and dominant, instead of dependent and obedient.

F E M M E FATA L E BL ACK
My Femme Fatale collection is designed for ladies dancing with shadows. I was inspired by the female-focused crime movie Femme Fatale. A modern, erotically charged fi lm noir by director Brian de Palma, revolving around an angel faced con artist with dangerous skills. Sultry and oh so seductive. Like a true femme fatale striking men down with her beauty, brains and sexuality. I love how this sensational woman fearlessly manipulates her identity to outsmart her enemies, while using the power of promiscuity to control the world around her.

C A L A M I T Y JA N E BLUE DENIM
My Calamity Jane collection is designed for ladies bending the rules of convention. I was inspired by the female western movie Calamity Jane. A well-deserved hommage by director David Butler to the undisputed leading lady of the Wild West. In a world dominated by the smoke and guns of men, Calamity Jane taimed her own wild horses. Rough, tough and fiercely independent… yet undeniably female. One of my heroines, because she helped change people’s perception of how a woman should behave.
