IGFA Codifies New Release Rules and Recommendations Recreational anglers – whether weekend fishermen, world record hunters, or tournament competitors – are becoming increasingly conscious of the need to conserve the fish they love to pursue. As they call for more and better science to strengthen the health of fisheries the world over, they have also looked for ways to reduce the impact of their hobby on game fish species. In particular, more and more tournaments are adopting an all-release format, necessitating a standard for released catches. Answering this need, the International Game Fish Association has codified a new set of

Leader lengths must conform to current IGFA tackle requirements. Specifically, for line up to and including 10 kg (20 lb) the leader may not exceed 15 feet. In lines over 10 kg (20 lb), the leader may not be in excess of 30 feet. All leader measurements are inclusive of the lure or hook arrangement and are measured to the bend of the last hook. At its recent annual board meeting in January, the IGFA Board of Trustees approved the following:

However, since IGFA rules do not allow class tippets heavier than 10 kg (20 lb), IGFA will adopt the convention of allowing a maximum fly leader length of 15 feet in keeping in accordance with the regulations for conventional tackle. Fly leader length is inclusive of the fly and will be measured to the bend of the last hook. Shock tippets may not measure more than 12 inches (30.48 cm) in length and class tippets must be a minimum of 15 inches (38.10 cm) in length. This new rule sets a standard for a released catch, and makes release formats more accessible for tournaments – many of which already use IGFA Rules as the basis for their tournament rules. harm to angler or fish • If the hook cannot be removed, the “Anything we can do to promote the leader should be cut as close to hook proper release of fish, especially in as possible a tournament setting, is good,” IGFA • Mates should refrain from manually President Rob Kramer said. “By breaking or “popping” leaders because establishing rules for what constitutes this can cause additional harm to fish, a release, the IGFA hopes to facilitate especially those not hooked in the more fish making it back to the water jaw. alive and in the best possible health.” • Ample time should be taken to revive exhausted fish by gently moving them While adopting this rules change, the forward in the water to get water flowing IGFA Board of Trustees also saw the over the gills. unique and beneficial opportunity to • Knotless, rubber coated nets should create a recommendation for best be used on fish that are netted. practices for safe and ethical release of fish: “Anglers have realized that in order for our sport to thrive, we must each take responsibly • Circle hooks are encouraged when for being good stewards of our resources,” Kramer added. “The IGFA is proud to be fishing with live or dead natural bait • The hook should be removed if taking a progressive part in that effort with these changes and recommendations.”

AZORES by Kareem Linjawi from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

I

t all started six years ago I was going to go to the Canary Islands, I looked on Google Earth and saw these islands in the middle of the Atlantic, my research told me that Fayal (an Azorean Island) held most of the world records for Atlantic Blue marlin so I changed my plans and went to the Azores. I did not know anyone there so I convinced my cousin to

come along. My cousin, who had no fishing experience what so ever, only came on the condition that I got the first fish. We had booked five days fishing. First couple of days conditions were rough and we did not get any bites. On the third day I caught a 500lb fish so now it was my cousins turn. On the fourth day we were fishing on the boat Habitat and after nothing all day at five in the afternoon I heard the rigger unclip and saw an absolute monster going mental on the long left, it was an incredible sight and the biggest fish I had ever seen, only problem was it was not my turn. I had to coax and encourage my cousin to take the rod because he did not seem that interested and twenty minutes into the fight

7

he had had enough but since I understood the importance of the occasion had to convince him to stay in the chair and keep fighting. He lasted four hours of hard fighting before he had to quit so I took the rod, I fought that big girl for another hour before we could get the leader and that is when the fun really started. It seemed like about twenty minutes (probably less) that we had the fish going crazy on the leader and she was still very fresh incredibly. That fish was HUGE. Easily 1000lb+ but we called it 980

8

8

and released it. I could not believe that I had finally got my grander but could not claim it‌.. I have been back every year since but this time I go alone and rent the boat alone so no one will steal my grander again. I have probably lost three granders since then. Last year I went twice, I took fifteen days in early July (also entered the 4th of July World Cup) and then went back in late Aug and took ten days.

We caught nothing on the fourth but in that first trip I managed to catch my first Spearfish (around 10lbs) seven Bigeye Tuna 50-100kg, one White Marlin two Makos and two blues (850 and 450). We lost five blues and one of them was a big girl. Most of the action came after July 11. The second trip last summer I went in late August for ten days and I caught eight blues (500-900) a Mako, two White Marlin

and a very big Spearfish, probably a world record (I sent a picture of it) but we released it as we were close to a protected area. Still I am happy I released it but it was big enough to weigh and probably should have been boated. Last year no one caught more Marlin than me and that goes

for the year before it as well when I caught seven.

99

I have now caught twenty four Blues in the Azores and I believe no one individual has caught more. This year they say they will give a trophy for the most successful fisherman of the season

10

so I hope my luck hold are top quality and they out. know how to fish. Fayal has a small airport so I love it over there, the they are not flooded with weather (which can be the resort type tourist, windy) is on the whole but they do tend to get very pleasant, the people regular customers, as I are friendly and the crews am.

The Young Man and the sea by Paul Worsteling

12

A good friend of mine has a famous quote, “if it isn’t a billfish, it’s a baitfish” and I have to agree. For anyone who has every gone Marlin or Sail fishing, you will know exactly what he means. Billfish are the ultimate apex predator, the lion of the sea.

This spirit was captured so well in Hemmingway’s classic, “The old man and the sea”. True genius as Santiago fights the beast and discovers himself along the way.

It has long been a goal of mine to catch a fish that is bigger than the boat I am fishing from. Why? Why did Mawson go to the Pole and Hilary to Everest, because they could!

Having caught over 70 billfish on baits, lures & fly, including the magical Grander of Australias Great Barrier Reef, I got to thinking about my next angling challenge and came up with a cunning plan.

The plan was set in place and started at Greenwell Point NSW. An area called “the banks”, is a marlin hotspot and I saw this as my best chance for success.

13

My vessel was a nine foot Jarvis Walker Watersnake inflatable boat with a 54 pound thrust Watersnake electric. With a boat that is just 9 feet in length, I had to b e a real chance. We took the boat offshore in the back of my 6.59 meter trailer boat and decided to try and get the bite from the big boat before transferring to the inflatable. This was

14

done for safety reasons. On the day, I counted 37 boats working a two square kilometre patch and no fish is worth a life.

when you are at water level. She towed us for 4 nautical miles and at one stage we were in full speed reverse and still doing 4 knots forward.

After 3 hours of trolling we hooked up on 15 kilo gear and jumped ship. The fish jumped in the first five min and we soon realised that we had a serious fight on our hands. The black marlin jumped several times, which is very interesting

Six times I had the fish to the boat, but it wasn’t until she finally broke the surface, that I realised the enormity of the catch. 2 hours and 25 min after hook up, my very nervous mate Greg, took the leader and the beast was ours.

15

We measured her alongside our vessel and estimated the total length at 2.7m (9ft) minimum with a weight of 150 kilos (330 pounds). She was not the fish I hoped to hook, but now that she was mine I would take her any day. Much bigger and a lot tougher than anticipated. I read many pages of that old book during the long battle.

We swam her and she can never get enough. swam away with grace. Hemmingway would have been proud. Some Check out say I am insane, but some of the I felt a great sense of incredible achievement. RETROFITTING INCANDESCENT NAV LAMPS WITH LED BULBS IS UNSAFE, ILLEGAL With all the power-saving and longevity benefits of LED lights, it’s easy to see why boat owners replace traditional light bulbs with LEDs. But doing so with navigation lights can violate the fixture’s certifications. This has

serious consequences, as US Inland Navigation Rules and International Navigation Rules carry the force of federal law. “A certified navigation light fixture is a combination of a specific lens, a specific bulb and the necessary foundation and wiring. The boat owner or operator must ensure that when bulb replacement is necessary, only the original type bulb is used,” said Phil Cappel, chief of the US Coast Guard’s Recreational Boating Product Assurance Branch. “Any substitutions can result in the light no longer meeting the Navigation Rule requirements.” A wide variety of replacement bulbs are available, including LED bulb conversion kits. Simply finding one that fits

the fixture won’t assure the boater of a properly certified navigation light, unless the lamp manufacturer has third party-certified it for their own lamp. Cappel notes that compliance with the Navigation Rules is the boat operator’s responsibility, not the bulb manufacturer’s. Industry specifications and certifications are in place for safety. Though seemingly simple, the red, white and green navigation lights are thoroughly tested by a third party for light intensity, color, angles of visibility, corrosion and temperature. “The lamp assemblies are designed and tested with a specific light source,” said Brian Goodwin, technical director for the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC).

intended for a hot bulb may dim unexpectedly. “Unless approved and tested by the light fixture manufacturer, LED retrofit bulbs do not belong in navigation lights,” he said. “Flaunting the law risks lives, insurance and liability,” said Jeremy Singleton, Hella marine global manager. “The USCG and ABYC take navigation lighting very seriously. They are considered life-saving devices to avoid collisions at sea and on inland waterways.” The simple solution for owners wishing to upgrade to LED navigation lights is to replace the entire light assembly with a certified product. This ensures their navigation lights are safe, and legal. Precise tests determine if light reaches nautical mile requirements. Light output must also be sharp at the edges and smooth across the arcs of visibility. This prevents light from appearing to flash like a buoy rather than project consistently when the boat rotates and rocks. If you have questions about this Goodwin notes that there are other causes of failure if the owner replaces a bulb with one other than the original type. For example, LEDs installed in a housing

STANLEY MELTZOFF –

OCEANS AND OTHER WORLDS TO OPEN IN NEW YORK IN EARLY JUNE La Jolla, California … A comprehensive oneman show featuring the art of premier fish painter Stanley Meltzoff (19172006) will open on June 7th at the Museum of American Illustration in New York. With some 90 paintings scheduled for exhibition, this show will be the largest Meltzoff retrospective ever mounted. Many are direct from the artist’s estate and have never before been on public display. Fans of fine sporting art will have no trouble recalling Stanley Meltzoff. Born in Brooklyn in 1917, his career included four years as a Stars and Stripes newspaper correspondent during WWII, postwar teaching at the prestigious Pratt Institute of Art in New York, and many decades as a highly successful commercial artist and illustrator. As an early

20

and enthusiastic SCUBA diver, Meltzoff’s career took an abrupt turn after securing a commission from Sports Illustrated in 1960 to do a series of game fish paintings unlike anything ever done before. His dramatic and incredibly detailed pictures of striped bass, bluefish, sailfish, and other species proved to be breathtaking and set a high bar for other artists. Widely published and repeatedly honored throughout his career, Meltzoff’s death in 2006 stilled a brush that will never be equaled. The Museum of American Illustration is located at 128th East 63rd Street in Manhattan. It is also home to the Society of Illustrators, a venerable 111-year old institution whose membership has included virtually every major illustrator of the past century. Stanley Meltzoff joined such luminaries as Frederick Remington, Norman Rockwell, and

N.C. Wyeth when he was elected to its Hall of Fame in 1999. Elsewhere, original art by Stanley Meltzoff can be seen as part of ART OF THE DIVE, a multimedia exhibition curated by David Wagner that will open March 24th at The Wildlife Experience Museum in Denver, Colorado. Another show celebrating Meltzoff’s iconic work is entitled SHARK and will open at the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art on May 13th. That show is being curated by noted author and artist Richard Ellis. Big Game fish of the North!

Who would think of Marlin sized game fish way up north in British Columbia Canada? Why do we hear many angling clients calling these big gamers “Fraser River Marlin?

24

The answer to the above is: hardcore anglers from all over the world and Europe especially the UK, Germany and Italy and these fish are renowned for aerial acrobatics

and extremely hardcore battles that can involve 300 yd runs or longer! I remember one of our German clients from August 2010 after fighting

Fraser River White Sturgeon

an 8 foot, 300lb+ fish for 30 minutes and 1 km downriver from where it was hooked, saying with bulged veins on his forehead, “Brian, what is

this? No fish can fight this hard!. Other clients who have been fishing with us and have also successfully fished for Marlin, Mako and Tarpon have given

their complete approval to these prehistoric monsters as one of the best big gamers on the planet.

25

This is quite the approval I believe, and if Sturgeon have any mental capacity they probably believe it too after being photographed so many times! The Sturgeon fishery is extremely popular and a growing industry here. It is 100% catch and release which is a big factor in enabling the species to keep growing in size and numbers. I have seen the average size

26

of these fish increase by about 12-16 inches over the last 8 yrs, and many fish average 6-7 feet or 100-200 lbs with the odd 800lb’er each year! Peak season runs from July to November but fish can be taken almost all year round. The big boys get taken usually from mid July to October. For successful Sturgeon fishing a boat is essential, most guide boats are 20-24 ft aluminum jet boats with covered

seating area and 350 V8 inboards. Anchoring in slower deeper water (20-50ft) is where you will find most fish and because Sturgeon are bottom feeders, we use a variety of preferred foods held tightly on the river bottom with 1220oz lead weights and short leaders with 8/0 12/0 big game hooks. The intent of this project is to promote Madeira and its coastline along with the splendid sportfishing opportunities that exist there for tourism. An important factor is the fact that for Blue & White Marlin which can be found in these waters, any ‘captures’ would immediately be followed by ‘releases’. “I am a billfish conservationist and

Marlin sunglasses art by Costa displayed at MBS MIAMI, Fla. USA – What do you get when you mix lenses, hinges, frame arms, nose pads, side shields and retainer cord segments from hundreds of Costa sunglasses? The answer: a very unique, one-of-a-kind blue marlin sculpture that the internationally famous sunglasses manufacturer and longtime TBF sponsoring partner has donated to The Billfish Foundation for its conservation efforts. TBF showcased the Costa sculpture at the Miami Intl. Boat Show, Feb. 16 - 20 in its Big Game Room exhibit. The foundation will promote the sculpture online and at various events throughout the year before auctioning it off at its 23rd Annual TBF Tag &

Release Awards Ceremony in February 2013. All proceeds will benefit billfish conservation efforts. The marlin art was featured in a recent Costa advertising campaign. Costa also made a splash with a tarpon and a bass built entirely using sunglass lens color and frame technology necessary to catch that particular species. The three works were given to worthy organizations. The marlin glows with dozens of Costa’s 580 blue mirror lenses as scales and silver and black frame arms as fins. Side shields and retainer cords add realistic detail to the billfish body. “The response to the marlin sculpture has been incredible,” said Costa VP

of Marketing Al Perkinson. “We donated it to TBF for the great things they’ve done for over a quarter of a century to preserve angling heritage and promote sustainable sport fishing.” “Costa’s one-of-a-kind blue marlin sculpture has an intricate level of detail-- it’s truly a priceless work of art,” said Ellen Peel, President of TBF. “It’ll be the main attraction in our booth and will raise awareness of the important work we’re continually doing across the globe.” Hundreds of blue lenses, hinges, frame arms, nose pads, side shields and more from Costa sunglasses went into making a very unique sculpture donated to The Billfish Foundation.

QUALITY AND SAFETY ARE KEY SHORE POWER CORD CONSIDERATIONS Shore power cords, and the electricity they transfer, help bring convenience and comfort aboard boats, yet can become dangerous fire and electrocution risks if they fail. Care should be taken when selecting shore power cords to ensure reliability and safety are the top considerations. To be watertight, the cord should be totally encased in solid PVC material. For flexibility, lightweight jute filler inside the cord jacket makes cable coil neatly and lay flat. This is particularly important in colder climates. Devices such as a strain relief bull ring alleviate stress on the conductors caused by boat movement, crew traffic and rough handling. A molded flexneck helps prevent rightangle cable damage, as well as accidental pullout of the cord. To prevent overheating and burnout, a copper crimp barrel termination, the type used by power companies, is superior to brass. Copper barrel sleeves—when used to crimp the wires to each terminal—provide more secure connections, better conductivity and longer life. A locking ring should be present for proper alignment of the connector to the inlet.

This allows for a completely waterproof connection and prevents accidental disengagement. The shore power cord should incorporate line-up notches or a similar visual indication that the contact is locked or unlocked.

billion dollar, global electrical and wire products manufacturer that serves many industries. It marine electrical products include UL Listed shorepower inlets, cablesets, adapters, plugs, connectors, weatherproof plates, ground fault receptacles and accessories from 15-200 amps.

Some shore power cords utilize indicator lights to visually confirm that power is flowing. Likewise, some models also have warning lights to show that incorrect, dangerous wiring conditions exist at the power source. Any such visual indicators should be molded into the cordset connection and fully watertight. It’s important to know when a cord needs to be replaced. If the jacket is frayed and wire exposed, it’s unsafe. Electrical shorts and a cord that’s warm to the touch also indicate it’s time to buy new. Any singe marks or discoloring around the male or female cord ends are a warning the cord must be immediately replaced. That afternoon as anglers met up at the Club everyone was talking about the number of good size fish between 4-600 lbs either lost or released. Insurance and Traveler’s, was held January 25-28 out of Los Sueños Resort and Marina. The tournament ended with a remarkable catch and release by the 37 participating boats and 171 anglers of 624 billfish,

including 11 marlin and 613 sailfish. With sailfish worth 100 points each and marlin worth 500 points, the teams scrambled to find the marlin and make each bite count.

DAY 1

Lines in was called at 8 am on the first day of fishing. It was Crush’em that called in the first release of the tournament at 8:10 am. Bandolera followed with a release at 8:11 am. By 10 am there were 41 sailfish releases. It was Bandolera who released

the first and only marlin of the day just before 11 am. By noon Bandolera has secured first place with 1000 points after releasing 5 sails and 1 marlin. Crush’em was in second with 700 points. At the end of Day 1, not much had changed on the leaderboard as Bandolera

ended the day at the top of the pack with 1500 points, Crush’em placed second on time with 1200 points, followed by Reel Screamer in third, also with 1200 points. A total of 211 billfish were released, of which 210 were sails and 1 marlin.

LEG ONE OF THE 2012 LOS SUEÑOS SIGNATURE BILLFISH SERIES Starts 9th Year off Right!

DAY 2

started off with a lot of excitement when Rum Runner called in a marlin hook up just six minutes after lines in. In under half an hour two more marlin were caught and released, making participants and onlookers wonder if the bite was going to be a mix of sails and marlin. By 10:10 am, Predator had released the 35th fish of the day. By 10:25 am the two-day fish count was up to 249 billfish. As of 11:45 am the count had risen to 277 billfish. By noon

Tuna Bite had taken the lead with 2100 points, Southern Pride was moving up having taken second place with 1800 points on time, followed by Bandolera in third, also with 1800 points. By 2:30 pm there had been 333 billfish released, of which 7 were marlin, 6 caught on Day 2 alone. Things got hot between 2:33 pm and 2:35 pm when Southern Pride, Clean Sweep and Predator each released a single back to back, followed immediately by Muy Caliente with a double. At 3:30

pm Southern Pride released a marlin to put themselves in first place overall with 2800 points, where they would end the day 600 points ahead of Tuna Bite, who took second place for the day with 2200 points, followed by Crush’em in third with 2100 points. Together the participating anglers ended Day 2 with a twoday total of 370 billfish, including 362 sails and 8 marlin.

DAY 3

moving up. It wasn’t until they released a double at 3:26 pm (their last fish of the tournament) that they managed to bounce ahead of Bandolera by 200 points. Bandolera fought back valiantly, releasing a sail at 3:32 pm, but in the end Crush’em finished with a mere 100 point lead ahead of Bandolera and placed second overall for the 3-day tournament with 3700 points after releasing 37 sails.

Bandolera finished in third with 3600 points after releasing 26 sails and 2 marlin. Southern Pride proudly took first with 4100 points, with an incredible 36 sailfish releases and 1 marlin, releasing their last sail at 4 pm, exactly at lines out. All told, the participating boats managed to release an incredible 624 billfish over the three days, including 613 sails and 11 marlin.

By 10:11 am the next morning Sea Angel had released fish number 66 for the day and the top three boats seemed to be intent on keeping their positions on the leader board. Southern Pride in was in first with 3200 points, Bandolera in second with 3000 points and Crush’em in third with 2500 points. By noon Crush’em had earned an additional 400 points, with 4 sailfish releases and was

TOP ANGLER

Incredibly, three people tied for first place among individual anglers, each releasing 16 sails for 1600 points, but it was Mark Woldinger of team Reel Screamer who won the coveted title of Top Angler for the first leg of the 2012 Series. Mark released his last sail at 3:16 pm, exactly 10 minutes before the runner up, John Siedzkowski of team Crush’em released his last sail, and 41 minutes before second runner up Ted Smith of the winning team Southern Pride released his last fish. The Top Angler received a framed print of Rick Bogert’s tournament art, a gift basket from Costa Rican Store, and an invitation to the WBS Grand Championship, to be held out of Los Sueños Resort in December 2012.

CASH PRIZES & AWARDS For the first time since the beginning of the Series, the

awards ceremony was held on the white sand in front of the Beach Club. The venue was ideal, with little white lights delineating the “ceiling” under a starlit sky, ocean front, with the Los Sueños Marina as the backdrop. As if the venue wasn’t enough, attendees were also treated to Brazilian samba dancers and an incredible fireworks show by FAISA that seemed endless. Tournament winners took to the stage to receive a total of $90,000 in cash and other prizes provided by tournament sponsors. Trophies by Gray Taxidermy Other prizes and awards by: Tunaskin- shirts and hats; Rick Bogert- framed prints of the tournament art; Vanmark, Inc.- gold pendants; Costa del Mar- sunglasses for winning anglers; Flor de Cañaaged Rum; and IK Yacht Design- Gift certificates for all winners.

2012 OVERVIEW FROM VANCOUVER ISLAND, BC, CANADA The village of ZEBALLOS is fast becoming a favourite destination for kayakers, sportfishers and nature lovers who want to leave the crowds behind and experience the wild west coast of Vancouver Island. Comfortable accommodation and several cafes welcome visitors.

To think that it’s almost time to gear up, get the boats ready and go do some test fishing is getting me excited. Year after year I head out to the old stomping grounds to make sure that those bottom dwellers are still where X marks the spot. It always gives you good confidence knowing that

that your old spots are still producing. Typically speaking if it once had good fishing it should still produce. Smaller Halibut (60lbs and under) can be very migratory and if you’ve done well in the past at a spot, it will hold fish at one time or another again (if not all the time). Bigger fish will

move from spot to spot as well, but not as much as the smaller ones. I have seen certain rock piles that produced 100 lbers almost every other day become ranches for smaller fish. With that said, my guides and myself release at least 80% of our big fish these days.

57

Salmon are not much different. If you have ever kept a log, or have a good memory, you will soon realize that certain runs appear in the same spots during the same times (approximately), run around the same depths in the water Colum, and feed on certain baits more than others. A lot of this has to do with the time of year and what is available for them. I know in May, June and early July a big run of American

58

River system fish pass along Esperanza very close to the beach. These fish are there year after year feeding on the abundance of needle fish (sand lance) that are there during this time. I tend to catch almost all of these fish within the bottom 30 ft of water; this is where the bait is. I have tried in the past when the fishing has been very hot to use some big spoons or plugs to try to entice only the larger fish. It does not

work, because there are no large bait fish around here at this time. To say you won’t catch anything is wrong, but changing from a 3.5 inch coyote to a seven inch road runner at this time will produce about one fish for every seven or eight you were getting before. Once the sardines start to show up around July it is time to switch gears a bit.

One thing I have found in the past is you can catch big Chinooks on smaller baits when larger feed is around. But the opposite does not seem to be true, for me anyways. Once this larger feed source is around big spoons, plugs and large herring all work great at producing big fish. One of the other things we see is that this food source can be found from the surface down to 200-300ft in the

offshore waters. This can make it a bit more difficult to locate fish. These fish will congregate in thermaclines, but move almost anywhere in the water Colum to feed. You will find on certain days they will only seem to be at 120-140ft down, and two days later you will hit them from 100-200 ft and everywhere in between. Fish are unpredictable, but they do have

patterns. If you pick up on these patterns and are adaptable in your methods you will have a greater success.

Florida BOYNTON BEACH

Geno IV Sportfishing Charters caught and released an aprox. 350+ lb Blue Marlin off of Boynton Beach Florida (just south of Palm Beach) last week in 600 ft of water. Claes Warnander, a newcomer to the world of blue-water angling, released a blue marlin off Boynton Beach Friday while fishing with captain Geno Pratt on the Geno IV charter boat. They were trolling in about 650 feet of water, headed east in the waters off Boynton Inlet, looking for dolphin. The marlin appeared on the surface behind the boat. It struck at a strip bait in the trolling spread, then moved back and attacked the mullet instead. “He came in and just piled on that thing,” Pratt said. “He was throwing water 5 to 6 feet in the air.” Mate Jon Zubak said they watched the dorsal fin and tail slicing across the surface as the marlin moved in to attack the trolled mullet. “The bite was very exciting,” Zubak said. Warnander, a native of Sweden, was visiting from Chicago and was the least experienced of the angling party that included Bob Cantwell, Gary Wagner, Mike Dengis and Betty Rocci. Ctd next page ...

It was Warnander’s first time fishing on the ocean. He climbed into the fighting chair and began to work the rod fitted with 60-pound-test line to subdue the billfish, which was about 11 feet long and weighed an estimated 350 pounds.

Pratt moved the boat around, backing up to allow Warnander to gain line while Zubak coached him on lifting and reeling to gain line.

About an hour into the fight, the marlin surfaced and made another jump, then went down again to continue the battle. After two hours and 15 minutes, the tired marlin finally appeared at the surface behind the 51foot Geno IV.

“It was a struggle,” Cantwell said. “He (Warnander) had to mend the blisters on his hand, and he was quite sore the next day.” Releasing a blue marlin in the waters off Palm Beach County is not that unusual, but it’s

not something you hear about every week, either. In the 50 years Pratt’s family has been charter fishing off the county, he said his clients have released about 25 blue marlin, including three in the past 10 years.

Catch & Release It’s More Than Just Throwing ‘Em Back The phrase means exactly what it says: after catching a fish, the angler returns it back to the water. But of course, it’s never quite as easy as it sounds. The reasons for doing it, however, are simple.

Yo u can still catch just as many fish with barbless hooks as you can with barbs.

And it’s not difficult to prevent your prize catch from getting away too soon. A circle hook is a type of fish hook which is sharply curved back in a circular shape. It has become widely popular among anglers in recent years because it hooks a much higher percentage of fish and is rarely swallowed, which can cause the hook to set in the gills or vital organs, and thus greatly decreases the mortality rates of released fish. By practicing proper catch-andrelease techniques you’ll be helping to protect the sport fishing population for the enjoyment of future generations. Because if you’re a parent, there’s going to come a time when you’ll want to fish with your kids, and maybe even your kids’ kids some day.

Stewards Recycled Fish: Recreational Anglers as Stewards of our oceans

Whether you’re fishing for marlin or mackerel, sailfish or sharks, it’s thrilling to have a fishing rod come to life in your hands with a fish at the other end. But it’s even better when you’re hooked up to a really big fish, right? Do it from a kayak – that’s the pinnacle.

Catch and Release may have caught on, but it doesn’t work if the fish dies a day or two later because of poor handling.

If we want to catch more and bigger fish, it takes the right bait or fly with the right presentation in the right location at the right time. Of course selective harvest is OK too. Keeping mid-sized and abundant species and releasing the giant fish and the glamour species is the right idea. But that’s just the starting point for a growing number of us who believe in living a lifestyle of stewardship. Back at home, saving water matters -- fish need water! IN MEMORY OF

Dennis Froud

Denis Froud, known as ‘Denis the Menace’ to some, ‘Captain Den’ to others and not forgetting ‘The Old Man of the Sea’ another favourite which referred to his remarkable resemblance to Ernest Hemingway, died peacefully in his sleep on February 13th, 2012 in England surrounded by his family. An accomplished fisherman he started as a youngster fishing the local ponds, streams and River Medway… he was soon catching roach, bream, perch, barbel and chub…. Always one to stretch his horizons Denis soon looked to the Southern coastline and the sea beyond. During the late seventies and early eighties he fished from ports along the coast including Plymouth, Gosport, Folkstone and Dover. Denis caught many specimen and record fish indeed whilst afloat but more importantly perhaps made lifelong friendships wherever he fished. Denis was always looking to stretch himself and he soon started to get an interest in even bigger game from tropical climes. He was a founder member of the Sportfishing Club of the British Isles. A club he served tirelessly throughout his life. During his career he set 23 International Game Fishing Association World Records. These ranged from 2lb line class records to all tackle records. Four of these records still stand. One for a Porgbeagle shark of 107lbs 07ozs on 4lb line class that will in all probability never be broken. He set 15 British and European Line Class records.
