She Shed Berrien Springs, MI

The She-Shed is a design-build project created for a Elizabeth Muhlenbeck in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Drawing inspiration from various design styles and precedent projects, the design team sought to create a whimsical escape from everyday life. The client wanted a safe space that she could have complete control over.

Collective One St. Joseph, MI

Understanding locality is important when we take on the task of designing for the community. The people that live and work within a community are what give life to the place. Through careful observation and study, we the designers can pick up on the nuances of people, cultures, and lifestyles that come together and act as the identifier of a neighborhood. With locality being a catalyst, we the designers can move forward with developing architecture that’s representative of the people that will be using it. Marina Island in St. Joseph County, Michigan is the location of the current project. It acts as a midpoint for the cities of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor, as well as a center for industry, recreational water sport, and private residence. Both Benton Harbor to the east and St. Joseph to the west, have an architectural history that’s reflective of the industry that’s existed in southwest Michigan for several decades. Finding a way to synthesize the two communities through design as a means of total human enrichment is vital to the formation of a project that fosters true growth. Using the surrounding context as precedent, drawing heavy inspiration from the industrial architecture style and the small business local to the area, patrons will be able to interact with not only each other but the architecture that’s rooted deeply in the place. Creating an overall environment that fosters true relationship building and unifying conversation is the main motivational force behind the design portion of Marina Island. Designing environments that people want to be in is key. Creation of these environment that cater to human wellbeing will be beneficial for all parties involved; from the patrons and clients to the site developers and designers. The love that people have will sustain the project for years to come.

Haven Eswatini

This project seeks to understand the rural language in the Southern African context. The structure is a multi-purpose space designed for ophan children at the Insaba farm in partnership with SOHO (Saving Orphans Through Healthcare And Outreach).

“This is the land where miracles cover the soil like hills and mountains. For years, feet that walked this land carried hopeless souls, weary spirits, and children. Little girls and boys, with hearts of a thousand worries of tomorrow. Upon daylight passing, I prayed for a restful night of sleep and water. But when the day came, walls grow from the ground with stories of belonging, pride, and dignity; inspired by my past, my history, and beauty. Beauty that my hands can make and my mind creates. The floors revealed patterns from my roots with a place to unite. A place for songs, a place to learn, a place to grow, a place to dream. A haven; announcing a message of hope like light in the darkness. A place where eyes can shut with little worry for tomorrow. Where little girls and boys don’t fear what the night might bring and rather admire it’s start. I felt power in the rooms. From the textures, lights, shapes, the love, and care, giving me a strength. I did not know before. In this land of broken childhoods, I found a miracle. An oasis, where a child’s dream is more than enough to change the world.” - Dorcas H.

Work By Hand Travel has been an integral part of my architectural education. The following are select works from my travels abroad. A collection of sketches and watercolor paintings, these pieces allowed me to better understand the various building typologies and public spaces found throughout Europe. In addition, there are a few personal pieces I’ve done that have helped me train my eye to understand the human form as well.
