WHY I LOVE KNIGHTSBRIDGE Down a quiet cobbled street in the heart of Knightsbridge lives a mysterious girl who goes by the name of Violet Darkling, and uses nocturnal creatures to inspire her quirky jewellery designs By Fleur Fruzza / Photographer Derrick Santini You would be forgiven for thinking that tarsiers and fossas are inhabitants of a fairy-tale world. They are, however, some of the new residents of Knightsbridge (if only in jewellery form). Designer Louisa Richwhite, whose studio is off the Brompton Road, cites the Madagascan cat-like fossa and world’s-smallest-primate tarsier – along with wolves, owls and other nocturnal creatures – as muses for her jewellery designs. Her brand, which goes by the name of Richwhite’s alter ego, Violet Darkling, is run from a small studio space down a cobbled

From here, Richwhite creates her dark yet glamorous designs, which N][M \PM ÅMZKM _Q\P \PM K]\M IVL \PM dark with the sparkly, and now retail as far and wide as Moscow, Saudi Arabia and Los Angeles. Richwhite, 28, who studied fashion design at the American Intercontinental University in London, now lives as well as works in the area, which she ÅVL[ I KWV[\IV\ [W]ZKM WN QV[XQZI\QWV# here, with a little help from her very vocal Pomeranian, Mungle Weasel, she tells us why.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO HAVE YOUR STUDIO HERE? It’s such a great location – right at the centre of everything – but it’s also oddly relaxing. Strange as it sounds, Knightsbridge always feels like a calm place to return to. There’s also a quirkiness to the area. Perhaps it’s because people both live and work here, which you don’t often get in the most central parts of London. When you walk down Walton Street, it’s full WN KINM[ IVL JQ[\ZW[ I[ _MTT I[ PWUM[# it has an independent spirit about it. Knightsbridge is also multinational,
_PQKP 1 ÅVL KWV[\IV\Ta QV[XQZQVO And, of course, being within walking distance of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Natural History Museum is magical.
WHERE ELSE DO YOU FEEL AT HOME? New Zealand is where I grew up. And the island I lived on – along with its wildlife, the isolation, and the night sky – continues to inspire me. There and Switzerland, which is where my family relocated when I was 14. I learned a lot about luxury in Switzerland.

WHAT’S THE AREA’S BEST-KEPT SECRET?
Zuma, for sure. A lot of my friends live around here, so we love to go there for cocktails and amazing Japanese food. I also love Aubaine on the Brompton Road.
A little Russian restaurant on Beauchamp Place called Borshtch’n’ Tears. It does great food and potent vodka. Some nights there’s a Russian folk band, so after dinner people get up and dance on the tables. We actually broke a table once and had to buy the owners a new one. Is that an average night out for us? Yes, I guess!

ROOM SERVICE Nothing says exclusive, special and – most importantly – personal like a handcrafted, custom-designed rug By Laura Jordan

he how-to-buy-a-present-for-someonewith-everything conundrum must have kept David Cameron awake at night prior to Barack Obama’s state visit to the UK in 2011. What on earth do you give the President of the United States of America? Rather, its couture carpets are available to all. As Christopher Sharp, CEO and co-founder (along with wife Suzanne) of The Rug Company, explains, these services were a natural evolution for the brand. “Because we make everything by hand, there’s no mass production, so making a unique piece is very possible,” Sharp says. “We WN\MV ÅVL \PI\ I KTQMV\¼[ [XIKM WZ KWTW]Z [KPMUM UISM[ ÅVLQVO \PM XMZNMK\ Z]O NZWU M`Q[\QVO [\WKS KPITTMVOQVO º The Rug Company offers two tiers of personalised service. One is customisation, the ability to adapt an existing design; the other is bespoke. Interior designer Emily Todhunter, who has used this service, explains, “When we’re designing for clients, we try to dream up the perfect room for them, and that means dreaming up the perfect rug. Christopher and his wonderful team. Six months later, the dream is real.” This anything-is-possible attitude means that The Rug Company has taken on a wide variety of projects. “We often accept unusual challenges in the knowledge that nothing but perfection will be accepted,” says Sharp. And no commission has been turned down. Projects have included a peacock-feather-patterned rug LM[QOVML \W Å\ M^MZa ÆQOP\ WN [\IQZ[ IVL \PM TIVLQVO[ WN I London townhouse, and a silk and mohair rug designed to complement a chair that once belonged to Napoleon. One client who painted in his spare time saw his artworks transformed into a tapestry and rugs. And a girl’s collage portrait of a family pet was transformed into interiors gold: the colours were matched and the different features of the collage were recreated using a variety of knotting techniques. A home consultation is usually recommended to give the designers the context of the space; if the client has any apprehensions, a sample can be made to check that a colour or design will translate correctly to the room. Once a design is approved, the artwork is sent to Nepal, where – like all of The Rug Company’s designs – the process is completed by hand. It’s an intricate process: there’s a grapher, who creates a full-size graph of the rug; a dye master, whose role is akin to that of a wine industry “nose” for his specialised skills; and there are also spinners, weavers, washers, clippers and [\ZM\KPMZ[ _PW ÅVQ[P \PM LM[QOV With around 20 craftsmen involved in the production of each run, the process takes around four months – a relatively short wait when you consider that, in Sharp’s words, a bespoke rug “will not only be a one-off but, with proper care, will last for hundreds of years”. Prasad in the restaurant at Tamarind
WHY I LOVE MAYFAIR London’s highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants is in Mayfair. Tamarind’s Michelin-starred chef Alfred Prasad explains why he has remained there for more than a decade By Fleur Fruzza / Photographer Derrick Santini Shortly after joining the team at Tamarind restaurant in Mayfair, Alfred Prasad became the youngest Indian chef ever to receive a Michelin star, at the age of 29. Eleven years on, Prasad has helped to develop the restaurant into an international brand, with a new branch in Newport Beach, California, as well as a presence in Harrods Food Halls. Prasad is committed to his beloved Mayfair, often starting at 10am and working until midnight. Here he tells how the historic surrounding streets have become a second home.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED IN MAYFAIR? I was headhunted to join Tamarind 11 years ago. Just a year after I started I was promoted to head chef. My struggle at that time was twofold. I was trying to retain the Michelin star that Tamarind had earned under my predecessor (often a restaurant will lose its star following the departure of a chef) while also challenging people’s ideas of Indian cuisine. Yes, we are I ÅVM LQVQVO 1VLQIV ZM[\I]ZIV\ QV Mayfair that pairs our dishes with suitable wines. It was hard to get this
across when people’s knowledge and expectations were often limited to their local curry house. Oh and we retained the star. In fact, the Michelin Guide cited us as an example of how to do so.
HOW HAVE YOU SEEN THE AREA CHANGE IN THIS TIME? 1\¼[ IT_Ia[ JMMV XZM\\a OMV\ZQÅML IVL it has been transformed into an even more luxurious area in the last ten years. However, Shepherd Market just next door used to be a relatively rundown part of Mayfair, but now it’s fantastic – great food, pubs, galleries
and boutiques. The name Mayfair actually came from the market’s annual carnival in Georgian times – the May Fair. I love working in an area where there’s so much history – there are blue plaques everywhere.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE AREA THAT INSPIRES YOU? Mayfair has the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants in London, so that’s a huge plus. There are so many excellent chefs working nearby – from Gordon Ramsay and Alain Ducasse to the Galvin brothers.
