With a sense of adventure, MarMar Copenhagen journey into the open planes of the future and this new Autumn Winter 2017 season. Eager for excitement we travel both back and forth in time looking for inspiration for this collection. Inspired by early settlers and Native American tribes, fused with poetic renditions of moons and floral wilderness. Classic MarMar Copenhagen prints are reinterpreted. Futuristic zigzags, fast forward metallics, and diagonal stripes with a hand painted feel, all add dynamics and a sense of movement to the collection. As always, the collection is built on the thought of the complete wardrobe of a child. Designing pieces for every wardrobe and every occasion. With an array of cool trademark pieces, everyday essentials and the peacock styles to catch your eye and charm your heart. Seasonal materials are a multitude of knits, comfortable sweats and jerseys all with a fashionable twist. Dressy qualities like Cupro, festive metallic jacquard and pretty, structured Viscose, as well as a floaty printed Viscose fabric. Contrasted by more casual light Denim, classic Twill and mixes perfectly with our extensive NOOS range consisting of Modal, both classic, Stripes and Newborn, alongside Leopard print, Denim, Thermo and Technical Outerwear. This season watch out for our amazing seasonal printed Technical Outerwear and spectacular seasonal Thermo. Colours range from muted hues of pink, with a vibrant accent in deep purple. To dark leafy green, shadow-like greyish green and beautiful tones of blue. Black in both matt, shiny and glittery. Metallics in green, gold and silver complete a very harmonious colour scale.

Where do you find your inspiration?

My collections are defined by sophisticated classic luxury, cool quirky details.

What does hints of circus imply?

How so?

MarMar Copenhagen offers quite a vast NOOS range. NOOS is short for Never Out Of Stock, meaning it is always available. Classic pieces that are as relevant this season as they will be next season. This range makes it possible for both our wholesalers and customers to re-stock whenever they want to and we produce accordingly, limiting overproduction. We ensure favourite pieces in classic colours are always in stock. The NOOS range started with our basic Modal and classic Leopard print. Now the range include Modal in six colours, as well as in stripes and in a special New born line. Leopard is also still there. Denim, classic white shirts, Technical Outerwear, Thermo, Swimwear, Underwear, Nightwear, knitted accessories have been added over the years. Marlene Holmboe

How would you describe MarMar Copenhagen design?

The MarMar Copenhagen collections are defined by sophisticated classic luxury, cool quirky details, in the best possible quality and functionality, with hints of circus. With something for every occasion whether it be grandma’s birthday party or hanging out at the skate park.

NOOS makes sense to me in so many ways...

Made for the everyday life of children. Every season I focus on maintaining the classic in keeping with the times, to secure a modern, yet timeless design. My vision is that MarMar Copenhagen clothes can be used across seasons in tandem with my newest designs.

NOOS makes sense to me in so many ways. From a design perspective, I design the collections with a child´s complete wardrobe in mind. With great basics, wonderful everyday items and the eye-catching pieces that make your heart skip a beat – pieces you simply need. With our NOOS range, the basic part is taken care of, as every new collection fits with NOOS, in both colours and design.

Among the things that inspire me the most, are classic films and old photos, because trends always return. For me it´s about looking back and then taking the styles to a new place. Of course always with a hint of circus … Well it´s the quirky details that make up the hints of circus. It´s a sense of humour, that appeals to children and grown-ups alike. Every season it is a slightly new way. It can be translated into proportions or combinations in a style or an outfit and sometimes in a ”more is more” kind of way. In the first collection, the Leopard print was the quirky touch, now it´s a classic - it´s funny in a way. But for sure, Leopard can still add a twist to a classic outfit. The circus dating all the way back to the medieval and onwards has been part of the MarMar Copenhagen DNA from the beginning and is a constant inspiration to me. Combined with the classical luxury it sets the MarMar collections apart and makes them different to other brands on the market.

What inspired you this season?

Early American Settlers, travelling into the unknown, eager for adventure. Meeting Native Americans on their way, falling in love with intricate patterns, ornaments and mythical totems. Contrasted by futuristic and graphic prints and metallics. Emphasized by amazing fabrics.

How do you choose the fabrics?

Merino Wool knit for Winter. Some fabrics fit with the theme of the collection and then there are the fabrics that just capture my heart, like this season´s Fancy Leopard. It´s a bit of a puzzle and I usually fall in love with more pretty fabrics, than there is room for in the collection. Fabrics are usually sourced locally, where our production facilities are, to keep everything in one place and help the production be as environmentally friendly as possible. So most times the fabric, determines the production place.

What are your thoughts on the environmental aspects of the fashion industry?

With MarMar Copenhagen I´ve wanted to create children´s fashion with a classic, ever relevant look and design, which can last across seasons and in qualities that will last too. With the impressive NOOS selection, I aim to produce what is needed, when it is needed, to reduce overproduction. Also our biggest selling lines Modal and Leopard are produced in Europe.

How many collections do you design per year and how big are they?

I design two collections a year, Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter. The size of the collections vary a little from season to season, but around 130-150 pieces per collection, combined with the NOOS range.

What are MarMar Copenhagen´s strengths to you?

The attention to fit and detail obviously and the quality of fabrics – which for me is not a commercial statement, but something that is experienced by our customers.

Can you explain ”the attention to detail and fit” that characterizes MarMar? Modal in six NOOS colours + seasonal options

Devil´s in the detail, right? It is to me anyways. I think it is important to make an effort – to pay

attention to detail - and to ensure our kids can wear something nice, which works; Makes them feel at ease and lets them express themselves. I´m convinced it makes a difference, whenever you do your best – in all of life´s aspects.

How can you get the perfect balance creating a collection for both party and play?

As I mentioned, the collections are built on the thought of a child´s complete wardrobe, with a multitude of combinations, basics and special pieces, chosen for their originality, with the natural eclectic mix it entails. This way my collections have the perfect balance, for both party and play.

Which aspects of MarMar are valued most by the customers?

That the collections are made for all aspects of children´s everyday life. The longevity of our designs and qualities are also often mentioned and it makes me so happy, when people tell me of MarMar Copenhagen pieces, being passed on from child to child. To me that´s a real pat on the back, meaning I´ve succeeded in making designs that is not season specific, in qualities and colours that last and last.

I studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, majoring in Fashion Design. I´m also a mother of three, so I have practical experience as well.

Have you always had an interest in design?

The simple answer is yes. For as long as I can remember I´ve been designing and sewing. Making things and thinking up new solutions.

Is your focus on childrenswear only? Or in womenswear and menswear too?

My main focus has been on childrenswear, but actually, MarMar Copenhagen also offers favourite pieces for women and this part of the collection is growing with every season. I definitely recommend you check it out, if you haven´t already. Menswear not yet, but you never know, maybe someday.

What is your position at MarMar Copenhagen? And your specific tasks?

MarMar Copenhagen is my company; I am the founder and the designer, so the company is very much my brainchild and everything with a MarMar Copenhagen label is a result of my creative thoughts. Being the owner as well as the designer, means I need to take care of a lot of other things as well, but thankfully, I have a great MarMar team helping me.

Why did you choose the name MarMar?

The name is a wordplay on the names of my siblings and myself, all of our names starting with Mar. The company has been a very heartfelt and personal endeavour from the get go.

Next season we will be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of MarMar Copenhagen and I already have loads of exciting things in mind for the upcoming collection. I also have great things in mind for our tween and woman collections. Businesswise I´ll be more than happy, if things keep progressing internationally, as they have so far.

Where and when was your company founded?

MarMar Copenhagen was founded in 2008, in Copenhagen, as the name implies. Starting off two people, in my livingroom.

Why did you create your own company?

Having spent many years in an unavailing search for simple and classic children’s fashion with a touch of international elegance, I recognized a gap in the market and decided to start a brand of my own, one that was rooted in the Danish design tradition of functionality and quality materials.
