Welcome to Boise, Idaho! Boise, the capital of Idaho, is the largest city in the state. Located along the Boise River, it spectacularly rises from a lush, green valley surrounded by a mountainous high desert. Home to more than 700,000 people, Boise (pronounced “BOY-see”) is the largest urban area between Salt Lake City and Portland and the third most populous metro area in the Pacific Northwest after Seattle and Portland. Boise offers an affordable launchpad for technology firms and careers. In addition to its burgeoning startup ecosystem, it attracts and retains major industry employers such as Micron Technology, HP, and Clearwater Analytics. It possesses yearlong access to outdoor recreation activities including exceptional whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking, biking, and skiing. The low crime rate, cost of living, and mild climate contribute to Boise’s ranking in several publications as being among the “Top 10 Best Places to Live,” one of the “Safest Places to Live in America,” and the “Top 10 Up-and-Coming Cities for Tech Jobs.”
Boise State University Boise State University is a doctoral university with “high research activity” according to the nation’s premier college classification system. With more than 24,000 students from every state and more than 60 foreign countries, it has the largest graduate school in Idaho and grants approximately 46 percent of all bachelor’s degrees conferred by Idaho public universities each year. Its longstanding teaching mission and cutting-edge research programs combine to establish high-quality academics and innovative research solutions that both students and Idaho employers demand. US News and World Report has named Boise State one of the most innovative universities in the country and recognizes the university as one of the best regional colleges in its “America’s Best Colleges” issue. Forbes magazine calls Boise State one of “America’s Top Colleges.” Campus life is vibrant with over 200 student organizations and plenty of campus and community events where students can engage with peers, faculty, and staff. Boise State is also home to the Velma V. Morrison Center for the Performing Arts, Idaho’s premier venue for regional events and national and international touring companies. The center is nationally recognized and is constantly ranked by the industry insiders among the “Top Stops in Universities.” While installation of the iconic blue turf in the stadium may have started as an eye-catching marketing tool, it now represents innovation and the exciting energy of Boise State and the city itself.
College of Engineering Our Culture Twenty years of rapid growth and success have fostered a dynamic academic and research culture. Through an unshakeable focus on learning, the College of Engineering provides students with world-class educational opportunities and hands-on experience through research, internships, and activities. Engineering faculty demonstrate an ongoing commitment to integrating outstanding research and education, with national recognition coming in part from numerous National Science Foundation CAREER awards.
Partners Engineering leadership cultivates effective collaboration with local industry and other research entities in Idaho and throughout the globe. The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) located in Idaho Falls, Idaho is the nation’s leading center for nuclear energy research and development. INL and the College of Engineering, as members of the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) research and education consortium, conduct cutting-edge energy research, educate the next generation of scientists and engineers, and partner with industry to advance competitiveness. Micron Technology is a long-standing partner to the university and to the college. It sponsored development of doctoral programs in both the Micron School of Materials Science and Engineering and the Electrical and Computer Engineering department.

Admission Two Boise State University units work together to admit students to the College of Engineering graduate programs: the Graduate College, and the specific College of Engineering school or department that sponsors the program. To apply, follow instructions in the link below. The information provided includes extensive resources about offerings and the admissions process. Once the Graduate College approves application documents, the specific program reviews them as well. School or department faculty ultimately determine each applicant’s admission status and the potential levels of financial support available. https://www.boisestate.edu/graduatecollege/howtoapply/
Financial Support Assistantships Our programs offer assistantships to highly qualified students. You do not need to complete an additional application. During our admissions process, we will consider assistantships for all applicants to our doctoral and master’s programs, but awards are dependent upon available funding. Assistantships typically include an annual stipend. We will also provide students receiving a full scholarship with health insurance. Candidates who apply for and receive a GEM scholarship will also have the non resident portion of their tuition waived. We encourage you to apply. https://www.boisestate.edu/graduatecollege/funding/merit-based-gem-scholarship/ Students are encouraged to contact individual program coordinators to inquire further about assistantship availability within specific areas of interest.
Fellowships Fellowships are financial awards with various stipulations such as performing research, studying a specific area of expertise, maintaining a minimum grade point average (GPA), and submitting regular progress reports and/or a comprehensive report upon graduation. Many externally funded fellowships are available. College resources are available to students regarding the preparation of competitive fellowship applications.
Scholarships Scholarships are financial awards that may or may not be renewable (when awards “renew,” it means they apply to each school year). Free national scholarship internet search programs and websites are available to students who wish to identify scholarship opportunities.
Federal and Private Student Loans Federal and private student loans are available through various application processes. Federal student loans usually offer a fixed interest rate and income-based repayment plans. Private loans can be more expensive than federal student loans. Federal Student Aid, an office of the US Department of Education, offers a thorough comparison of federal versus private student loans. The Boise State University Financial Aid Office may offer assistance with completing a financial aid application. https://www.boisestate.edu/financialaid/home/apply-for-aid/graduate-students/
