WHODUNNIT? A MESSINA HOF MURDER MYSTERY DINNER

by Allison Beatty

Take on a Texas twist to the traditional “whodunnit” at Messina Hof ’s Trailer Park Tragedy Murder Mystery Dinner! Someone at the barbeque has committed a crime, and it’s up to the rest of the partygoers to crack the case. Trailer Park Tragedy will take place on Saturday, March 7 from 7-10 p.m. at the Messina Hof Estate in Bryan.

Trailer Park Tragedy will be acted out by the guests, but with some help from Messina Hof. Guests will receive their character profiles prior to the event, and are in charge of their own costumes. Once at the dinner, a host will assist in the progression of the story to make sure everyone has a great time!

In between searching for clues and interrogating tablemates, guests will receive a classic Messina Hof dinner, carefully paired with one of their own wines. Hopefully by the end you’ll have captured the killer — or, if you were the murderer all along, managed to stay in the shadows!

This event is a great choice for fans of fine cooking and high-stakes thrillers. If you’re interested in being part of a real-life game of Clue, check out Trailer Park Tragedy and Messina Hof’s other Murder Mystery Dinners throughout the year!

It’s all taking place at Southerns, located next to Post Oak Mall! Curtis Grimes is no newcomer to music. He was a contestant on season one of the show “The Voice” back in 2011, and finished in the top ten with CeeLo Green as his coach. These days, Grimes boasts a formidable number of awards from the Texas Country Music Association, and his songs frequently top the Texas Country chart. His concert begins at 8 p.m. on Feb. 21. Advance tickets are only $5, with discounts for seniors, military and first responders. Ray Johnston has been through a lot in his lifetime, and as a result his music is largely focused on staying upbeat and spreading positivity. Dusty Neuman’s talents don’t stop at performing: he’s also a gifted songwriter, having written the popular Josh Ward song “You Don’t Have To Be Lonely,” which made waves in 2017. A down-to-earth country boy through and through, he regularly performs across the state, most frequently making the rounds through Central Texas. He’ll be jamming at Southerns on Feb. 26, and this concert is free to attend as part of their Free Concert Wednesdays series, so don’t miss out!

by Amber Jones RONIN TAPAS + WINE NIGHT

Grab one of your wine-loving friends and join Ronin Restaurant for a night filled with wine and shareable tapas. On one Thursday of each month, Ronin offers limited, off-list wines that are paired together with specialty tapas prepared from seasonal offerings available in the restaurant garden. Also joining guests at this event will be a winemaker or wine industry professional. This month, Tapas + Wine Night will take place on Thursday, Feb. 27, from 5-10 p.m., and it is sure to be a night filled with delicious food and wine!

Before Ronin Restaurant opened, chef and owners Bryan and Amanda Light owned a family farm where they did offsite catering, hosted special events, including weddings and Full Moon Dinners at The Farm. It wasn’t until they were approached about starting a restaurant that the idea for Ronin Restaurant went into full swing. The restaurant is located inside the Ice House on Main that was built in 1912. The Lights made sure to keep the history of The Ice House alive by keeping as much of the original infrastructure intact as they could. Construction of the restaurant took a full year, and Ronin opened its doors to the public in May 2018.

The menu at Ronin is updated daily, and it all depends on what the Lights have harvested from their garden that week. Menu items change based on the climate and season, so you can always be sure to find something new to enjoy. Follow Ronin on social media to find out the tapas menu and the wine professionals attending.

Guests who enjoy the wine served at Tapas + Wine Night can purchase the wine at the restaurant or order the wine for a later pick up date at a reduced price.

For more information and to make reservations, please visit the Ronin Farm & Restaurant website.

THE CALIDORE STRING QUARTET

by Mikey Galo

If you love classical music and want to experience it in a venue that is known for its stellar acoustic capabilities, look no farther than the Concerts on Carter Creek series. On Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m., the series, in conjunction with the Friends of Chamber Music, will be bringing you an award-winning and internationally performing classical quartet at Bryan’s First Presbyterian Church.

The Calidore String Quartet, which is composed of violinists Jeffrey Myers and Ryan Meehan, violist Jeremy Berry, and cellist Estelle Choi, is considered one of the premier classical quartets in the world. Indeed, it is no wonder why when you see them in person. The group performs beautiful ensembles both of its own creation and those authored by some of the world’s greatest composers, such as Beethoven and Mendelssohn. This year marks the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth and the tenth anniversary of the Quartet, so this concert will feature some of Bethoven’s string quartets. The Quartet is able to captivate audiences and take them on an incredible rollercoaster of emotions. From angst and anticipation to calm and soothing melodies, the group projects it all incredibly well, and First Presbyterian is the perfect setting.

The Quartet has received lavish praise from The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post. The group has won countless awards and grants and has been invited to perform in some of the world’s most exclusive classic music venues, including Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Kumho Art Hall in Seoul and the Lincoln Center. The group plans to play in shows across the United States and Europe.

Concerts on Carter Creek was founded in 1983 by members of the First Presbyterian Church who wished to offer a music ministry to the community. The concert is free and open to all members of the community. Childcare will also be provided by the church.

Formed all the way back in the 1960s at King’s College in Cambridge, England — where the group got their name — The King’s Singers are an acapella ensemble of 6 per formers. What separated The King’s Singers from their peers back when they were formed was their versatility; they would per form pieces from the Middle Ages alongside popular hits from the present. The modern lineup continues this tradition of versatile excellence, per forming and composing pieces with some of the most talented musicians and writers of their time. While the members of the group have shifted gradually over the sixty some years since their formation, the current lineup travels all around the world, per forming hundreds of concerts per year, and their charity, The King’s Singers Global Foundation, supports their education outreach and their work with young, upcoming composers.

Sporting consistently great shows this season, the MSC OPAS at Texas A&M doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon with The King’s Singers

If you’re interested in picking up tickets, seats range from $30 - $56, and you can order them online at the MSC OPAS website.
