Rose Street Residence by Fieldwork Architecture

Rose Street Residence is a 6m wide terrace which resides one of the back streets of Melbourne’s inner-city suburb of Fitzroy. Formerly a brothel, the designers embraced the sites colourful past rather than tried to erase it. Exsiting materiality and colour schemes were fused with bold lines and textures.
The design celebrates the quirky nature of the building with its eccentric styling and furniture/art selections. Red and pink neon lights are combined with velvets and leather upholstery whilst timber herringbone flooring flows into granite tiles. Furthermore, the staircase design with glass and metal balustrades will be used in my design to make a distinction between the spaces whilst allowing light and a sense of flow throughout.
Light was considered in the design. A skylight was integrated over the new staircase bringing natural light into the home. The new 1m setback in the west provded access to the garden and also brought the exterior landscape into the interior. The ecclectic and colourful yet not overwhelming design by Fieldwork is my main inspiration. Wood materiality and the curvature of the furniture is something I will use in my design. I will feature a lot of custom curved design.
Using the narrow side space as a window into greenery to open up the space and bring the outdoor into the interior will be a feature of my design. The use of glass, both in colour and a frosted glaze will be used to further emphasize the openness of the design.
Use of local artwork and design as well as vintage furniture pieces as a nod to the history of the building is a key feature. Brass detail and a curved custom kitchen will be a part of the deisgn.
Curved walls, integration of textured glass and natural sustainably sourced woods will feature.
