Deconstuct·ing the CUBE architectural design 1st semester tutor: Constantina Demiri 2010

“When we deconstuct anything, we simply do not destroy, dissolve or cancel the legitimacy of what we will be constructing.” Jacques Derrida

The more I look back and examine my first architecture design project about the deconstruction of the cube, the more I realise its educational importance. It’s all about the concept. How can a well known object like the cube, with such an absolute shape, make so many different versions of itself? Decontructed, fragmented, but still resembling to THE cube. The starting point is the same for everyone. The exploration of the “standards” which is ideally leading to the self-exploration is what makes the difference.

House project architectural design 3rd semester collaborator: Chrisanthi Keleki tutor: Leonidas Koutsoumpos 2015

the scenario

And here comes the day when a bunch of young people around their thirties make a big decision about their future daily life. With a strong desire for a new home bonding the 3 of them, they asked us to design their new house including a workspace for their mobile app startup company, in the center of Athens. Challenge accepted.

Athena’s memorial

Poseidon’s memorial

Parthenon (Acropolis)

“Once, a long, long time ago first king of Athens, King Cecrops set out to find a patron deity for his city state. He called on Athena and Poseidon because both in fact desired to be the patron of this beautiful city. Their rivalry was so intense that they almost went to war and just as they were about to attack each other, Athena, with her typical, wise approach suggested that they should hold a contest for the city. With King Cecrops the judge they set up the contest and decided that whoever presented the city with the best gift would be rewarded with the city itself as the grand prize.” In this project we decided to design two memorials refering to this myth of the contest between the two gods. Each memorial is designed to suit the general characteristics of the corresponding god in a more abstract way.

Athena’s memorial

Poseidon: the God of sea trying to reach the sea, gazing over the horizon, a path towards the ocean, the glass symbolises the transparency of the water, a transition from the touch of the ground to an unsteady swing in the air, light diffusion is the main challenge

Athena: the Godess of Wisdom and War strongly related to the earth, owls and olive trees are some of her symbols, her “home is made out of wood and mud, the construction of randomly placed branches create an intense atmosphere resembling a walk through the woods, always focusing on her Temple (Parthenon) appearing in the distance

The integration of a building into its environment. Expansion in height and vertical structure of the building, public movement and gathering spaces, problem solving of interior circulation. Layout and character of interior space, the significance of construction materials, colours and lighting for project elaboration. The outdoor common space. Design of interior and outdoor space into a synthetic cohesion of public use. Thorough study of matters concerning the combination of architectural design and construction expression. Parameters affecting construction and technology options. Environmental design parameters.

Organic Sculpture plastic arts 3rd semester tutor: George Giparakis, Ioannis Grigoriadis, Theodora Voutsina 2012

the interior In this project we were asked to design an autonomous functional “plastic” object based on forms and structures of the natural world. We had to come up with a simple concept which would lead to a simple “comfortable” space for a living imaginative creature. Thus I created an organic shape which was inspired from the form of a cocoon. materials: wire, paper tape, manila paper

Bird Observatory [Lake Marathon]

architectural design 6th semester collaborators: Katerina Chatzopoulou, Magdalini Petroleka tutor: Constantinos Karadimas 2013

The wetland of the National Park of Schinias is located on the plain of Marathon and belongs to the Natura 2000 network accomondating 115 bird species, as well as endangered species of freshwater fish, amphibians and reptiles. It is actually the most important coastal ecosystem of Attica. The subject of this project was the detailed study and design of a construction made out of wood and metal for the observation of these species.

4.48 Psychosis scenography 7th semester collaborator: Danai Papaevangelou tutor: Stavros Giftopoulos 2014

What is scenography? “The spatial translation of the scene. Jose Carlos Serroni

The objective of this course was to examine the relation between architecture and scenography. Each one of us may give a different meaning even for the same play, in fact, that is what makes it subjective. This project was considered as an experiment in which we were asked to find a way to present the play of our choice from our perspective of view as well as to make the audience get immersed in the visual reality of our creation. 4.48 Psychosis is a play by, the British playwright, Sarah Kane and has no explicit characters or stage directions. It is about a specific case of a person with clinical depression. Contemplation and discussion of suicide are prominent.
