SEASON PREVIEW
Roster Loaded With Talent Has Marquette Poised For Breakthrough Season
Now in possession of fourstraight winning seasons, the Marquette University men’s tennis team has established itself as one of the top programs in the BIG EAST Conference. Seventh-year head coach Steve Rodecap features a roster loaded with experience for the secondstraight campaign and has the Golden Eagles poised for a breakthrough season in 2009-10. “We are extremely excited about the potential of this year’s team and the impact that we feel we can have

in the conference,” Rodecap said. “We have the deepest Marquette team that we have ever had, which will play a big role late in the year when the conference championship is on the line.” Marquette returns five letterwinners from last season’s 17-9 squad, while welcoming four talented newcomers to campus. MU’s recruiting class consists of three freshmen and one transfer, with each individual expected to contribute in the singles and doubles lineups. While help will be welcomed by the Golden Eagle veterans, the team’s overall success will more than likely come down to the performances of seniors Niko Boulieris, Dusan Medan and Mark Rutherford. As a trio, the group has collected nearly 200 singles victories and almost 180 doubles decisions. Boulieris has developed into one of the team’s leaders, both on and off the court. He has seen action at five of the six singles positions during his stellar career and owns 70 total wins. “Niko is a very dedicated and committed player which has allowed him to grow each year in the program,” Rodecap said. “His energy on the court will allow him to be a key leader for this year’s team.” In two quick years with Marquette, Medan has already made a name for himself with back-to-back 30-win singles campaigns. He is on pace to become the program’s all-time leader in singles victories and will assume the No. 1 position vacated by the graduated Trent Hagan.
“Dusan has been very productive during his two years in the program,” Rodecap said. “His teammates have depended on him to lead on the court in pressure situations. He always puts the team first which makes him a special player.” Rutherford has already established himself as one of the top doubles performers in school history. He ranks second all-time with 82 victories and he and former MU player Brett Binkley are the winningest duo (49 wins) to wear the Blue & Gold. “Mark is a very mature player with a wealth of experience and should have a calm presence with our younger players,” Rodecap explained. “His versatility on the court, combined with a very competitive mind, should make him very reliable as a senior.” Both Jonathan Schwerin and Drake Kakar earned valuable experience during their respective 200809 freshman campaigns. Schwerin developed into a consistent presence in the singles lineup

and was tabbed the team’s most improved player. “With his size and weapons, I fully expect him to have an even larger role on this year’s team,” Rodecap said. “His sophomore season should see him continue to grow into his game and make him very difficult to match up against.” Kakar earned 16 singles wins in limited action, including a 6-2 mark at the No. 6 spot in dual action. “Drake gained some experience in the lineup as a freshman that we feel will help relax him and allow him to be a more confident player as
a sophomore,” Rodecap said. “He is a great mover on the court which will give him the opportunity to be a leader for us in conditioning.” Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley arrives in Milwaukee as one of the top ranked players in Mexico. He has played at the international level for several years and will be counted on for an immediate contribution. “‘Pepe’ is a very exciting player with a big game combined with a lot of athleticism,” Rodecap said. “He possesses a lot of skill on the court which allows him to be a very versatile player.” Jose Manuel Munoz joins the roster with two seasons of collegiate experience at the University of San Diego and will be in his junior year with MU. “Manny is a very committed athlete and has a very mature approach to his game,” Rodecap said. “I fully expect that he will have a big impact in both singles and doubles during his first season in the program.” Otavio Perim owns a wealth of success on the amateur circuit and was ranked among the top-100 players in the country, according to TennisRecruiting.net. “Otavio brings a lot of experi-
ence with him as a freshman, and we believe that he will have a great career as a Golden Eagle,” Rodecap said. “He is a very tough competitor, with a lot of talent.” Fellow Texan Jacob Straus concluded a standout prep career at Alamo Heights High School, while also competing on the amateur circuit. “He is full of strength and talent, which allows him to play a very big game,” Rodecap said. “He has a lot of energy on the court that with some direction can develop into a great leader for our program.” The team’s schedule was designed for the makeup of the roster and will prepare the squad for its ultimate goal. “Our regular season is preparation for us to be playing our best tennis in April in order for us to have the capability of winning a Big East Championship and earning a spot in the NCAA’s,” Rodecap said. “This group is extremely motivated and led by three seniors who want to end their careers with a championship.”

HEAD COACH seventh season The men's tennis program at Marquette University has encountered a tremendous amount of success on the court and in the classroom under head coach Steve Rodecap, who is entering his seventh campaign with the team in 2009-10. Rodecap has guided the program through its transition to the BIG EAST Conference, which includes overall winning campaigns in each of the last four years. The Golden Eagles posted 17 victories for the second-straight year in 2008-09 and a pair of players claimed all-league accolades. In the classroom, men's tennis was one of four programs at MU honored in 2009 for top academic performance as part of the NCAA's academic reform program. Marquette finished 17-7 overall in 2007-08, claiming fifth-place at the BIG EAST Championship for the second-straight year. The Golden Eagles posted their second-straight winning season in 2006-07 and earned a fifth-place finish at the BIG EAST Conference Championships. Six members of the squad were named BIG EAST Academic All-Stars after completing

the year with a grade-point-average of 3.0-or-better. MU posted an overall record of 14-8 that season, which included a pair of victories over DePaul and Georgetown in the conference championship. In 2005-06, Rodecap led a young squad and finished the year above .500 for the first time at MU, with a 16-9 record. Peaking at the end of the season, Marquette advanced to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament, finishing fourth. The Golden Eagles reached double figures in wins in each of their first two seasons (2003-04 and 2004-05) under Rodecap. Rodecap has been involved in youth tennis during his tenure at MU, serving as the coach for the state's Junior Davis Cup Team for each of the last four years. Rodecap joined the Marquette program after a successful four-year stint as the head coach at Northern Illinois. In 2001-02, Rodecap guided the program to a runner-up finish at the Mid-American Conference Tournament and an overall record of 16-10. The 16 wins were the most for the NIU men's tennis program since the 1996-97 squad finished the season 18-6. Newcomers in three of the top four singles spots in 2000-01 helped Rodecap lead NIU to a 14-11 overall mark, doubling the win total of the previous season. One season older and more experienced, the Huskies continued their improvement in the 1999-2000 season with a 13-10 standard. Under Rodecap's tutelage, the Huskies placed four players on the All-Mid American Conference team, includ-
ing Raymond VanWasbeek, who earned three consecutive first team berths. In addition to its success on the court, the NIU tennis team fashioned an impressive 3.48 team GPA in his last season and placed two players on the Academic All-MAC Team. Rodecap finished his fouryear stint at Northern Illinois with a 50-46 record. Prior to his tenure at NIU, Rodecap served as an assistant coach at Texas Christian University for the 1998-99 campaign. The Horned Frogs posted a 14-6 record for coach Michael Center that season while advancing to the second round of the NCAA Regional Championships, due in large part to the efforts of singles ace Esteban Carril. Rodecap's efforts helped the Horned Frog standout win the 1998 clay court championships and advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships while earning All-America accolades. Following his playing days, Rodecap remained at Ball State as a graduate assistant for coach Bill Richards. Over the next two seasons, BSU won two more conference titles (1996-97, 1997-98). A standout player in his own right at Ball State University from 199296, Rodecap helped BSU to a trio of Mid-American Conference Championships (1992-93, 1993-94, 1994-95) during his playing days. The Anderson, Ind., native received his Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Ball State in 1996. Rodecap and his wife, Emily, have two children, Patrick and Missouri. ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH third season The 2009-10 campaign will mark the third at Marquette for assistant coach Erick Martinez, who played collegiately under head coach Steve Rodecap. The Mexico City, Mexico, native brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the Golden Eagles. A former champion of the ITA Midwest Regional and nationally ranked performer, Martinez has already played a key role in a successful collegiate program. Martinez arrived in Milwaukee after serving as the head professional and director of junior development at Topspin Racquet and Swim Club in Lexington, S.C., where he played a key role developing young talent and preparing them to compete at the collegiate level. His responsibilities at Marquette involve all aspects of the program, including recruiting, on-court

instruction and supervising the dayto-day operation of the office. Rodecap coached Martinez for two seasons at Northern Illinois University, where he was named to the All-Mid-American Conference team on three occasions. He was the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2001-02 and achieved the highest national ranking in the school´s history (#20 doubles). Martinez was also the first Huskie in the history of the program, along with teammate Juan Pablo Barriga, to represent Northern Illinois University at an ITA National Tournament Final. "His passion and dedication made him excel as a student-athlete and he will bring those same attributes as a coach," Rodecap said.

VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT second season Former Marquette men’s tennis player Raj Gill is in his second stint as an assistant coach in 2009-10. Currently working as a coach at the CARE Tennis Academy in Libertyville, Ill., Gill will serve as a volunteer assistant this season. Gill initially left MU in 2007 to become the associate director of tennis at Walt Disney World Resorts
in Orlando, Fla. He was also the director of junior programs for the town of Celebration, Fla. Gill assisted with the men’s squad for two years (2005-07) after working with the Golden Eagle women’s team for one campaign. He is very familiar with the current roster, having recruited and coached a majority of the squad.
"I knew very early in the process that he would be a great fit for our program and our entire University." Martinez qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2004 and was ranked among the nation's top 20 doubles players in 2003. He continued his playing career following graduation, competing in several professional tournaments across the country. He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from NIU in 2005 and graduated with a gradepoint-average of 3.63. Martinez and the former Jamie Lynn Carney were married in May of 2006.
Gill was a four-year letterwinner under current head coach Steve Rodecap. In his four seasons at Marquette, Gill earned a 36-39 record in singles play and a 41-34 doubles record. He was 10-6 as a senior in singles. Gill was an exceptional doubles player, winning as many as 14 times as a sophomore and owning an above .500 record in three seasons. Gill graduated from Marquette in 2004 with a degree in political science. He and his wife, Ashley, currently reside in Chicago, Ill.

President
REV. ROBERT A. WILD, S.J. Robert A. Wild, S.J., is the 22nd president of Marquette University. He began his duties as chief executive on June 17, 1996. Father Wild is building on Marquette's core strengths: an academically rigorous, values-centered curriculum; solid, practical preparation for work in a world of increasing complexity and diversity; formation for life of students as ethical and informed leaders in their religious, cultural, professional and civic communities; and graduating women and men who will dedicate their lives to the service of others. Under his leadership, the university in 2000 embraced a statement of shared vision for the future: "Our vision is to provide a Catholic, Jesuit education that is genuinely transformational so that our students graduate not simply better educated but better people, and to do so with such excellence that when asked to name the three or four best Catholic universities in America, people will include Marquette as a matter of course." Marquette has established clear, measurable goals and specific strategies to achieve this long-term vision. Under Father Wild's leadership, the university has improved academic quality, increased and stabilized enrollment and enhanced partnerships with the City of Milwaukee and community groups. In 2005 Marquette completed the most successful comprehensive campaign in the history of the university raising a total of $357 million. Marquette is committed to updating academic facilities for students in the 21st century: a new School of Dentistry opened in 2002, the John P. Raynor, S.J., Library was dedicated in 2003, and the Al McGuire Center, a practice facility for student-athletes, opened in 2004. Father Wild and his Marquette colleagues remain committed to providing students with a Catholic, Jesuit education in an atmosphere of care and faith. Immediately prior to assuming the Marquette presidency, from 1992 to 1996 Father Wild served as president of the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass., a graduate school which trains clergy and laity for leadership roles in the Catholic Church. From 1985 to 1991 he served as provincial superior of the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus, directing the activities of Jesuits in northern Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and southwestern Ohio. A biblical scholar and author of two books and numerous scholarly articles, Father Wild taught theology at Marquette from 1975 to 1984. He has been a member of the university's Board of Trustees since 1990. 24

Our student-athletes do that every day as students, competitors and leaders for others.” Previously, Cottingham served as Associate Senior Vice President. In that role, Cottingham was part of the University’s administrative leadership team and a member
