MARQUETTE MARQUETTE ATHLETICS

Marquette’s seventh season of competition in the BIG EAST Conference continued a trend long ago established by the University’s student-athletes of individual and team success, both in competition and the classroom. The 2011-12 campaign was highlighted by the second-straight Sweet 16 appearance by the men’s basketball team. MU has now appeared in the NCAA Championship in seven-consecutive seasons. The volleyball team collected its first-ever NCAA appearance and defeated nationally ranked Western Kentucky in the squad’s debut match. The women’s soccer program made its 10th all-time appearance in the NCAA’s and finished the season ranked among the nation’s top-25 squads. There were also a multitude of individual accolades, including Jae Crowder being tabbed the league’s player of the year and men’s soccer player Calum Mallace being named midfielder of the year in the conference. A total of over 20 student-athletes and coaches claimed all-conference accolades in 2011-12 and several Golden Eagles were represented on All-America rosters. MU’s tradition of academic excellence was highlighted in 2011-12 by Natalie Kulla’s selection as the BIG EAST Female Scholar Athlete of the Year for women’s soccer. The women’s soccer program was also recognized by the NCAA for the third-straight season for finishing in the top-10 in the nation in the Academic Progress Rate. As a group, over half of Marquette’s student-athletes own cumulative GPA’s of 3.0-or-better and 11-of-16 programs posted team GPA’s of 3.0-or-better in 2011-12. Each of the 16 athletic programs participated in hundreds of hours of community service projects throughout the year, working in concert with the University’s mission. Multiple teams took part in the University’s Hunger Clean-Up event, one of the nation’s largest one-day service projects. The men’s and women’s basketball teams continued their long-standing relationship with Al’s Run and the Student-Athlete Advisory Council again focused its efforts on the Cure for Kirby fundraising campaign. 2012 marked the fourth year for the Intercollegiate Athletics Alumni Awards and this year’s recipients were recognized for their many contributions to the University and community. Four awards were distributed as part of the University’s Alumni Awards weekend in April. Marquette student-athletes, coaches and staff continue to work hard daily to fulfill our mission of striving for excellence in athletics, academics and leadership in service to others in the Jesuit tradition. Bolgert and Johnson Named Capital One Academic All-America® Recent Marquette University graduates Peter Bolgert and Olivia Johnson were named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men’s and Women’s Track/Cross Country Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Bolgert earned first team honors for the second year in a row and Academic All-America mention for the thirdstraight year, while Johnson was named to the second team after receiving first team accolades in 2011. Bolgert was also named an Academic All-America Second Team selection in 2010. The Sheboygan, Wis., native was the 2011-12 BIG EAST Male Scholar-Athlete Award winner for men’s cross country and is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Pi Sigma and Chi Alpha Sigma honor societies.

Johnson graduated with a 4.0 GPA in accounting and has been doing graduate work at Marquette with the intent to further her studies towards a Ph.D. in accounting at the University of Iowa.

Bolgert also earned the Zeta Scholar (2009), Karioris Memorial (2010) and Stephen Weinreich Memorial (2011) awards for physics, in addition to the Outstanding Undergraduate Mathematics Award (2012).

The Milford, Iowa native was a 2010 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic selection after competing in the 2010 NCAA preliminary rounds. She is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma and Chi Alpha Sigma honor societies as well as the 2011 winner of the Delta Sigma Pi Golden Key Award.

2 011-12 TEAM HIGHLIGHTS Women’s Basketball Marquette finished the 2011-12 season 14-17 overall and 4-12 in BIG EAST Conference play (14th place). Marquette advanced to the second round of the BIG EAST Conference Championship following a 54-51 win over Cincinnati. Head Coach Terri Mitchell picked up her 300th career win when the Golden Eagles defeated New Orleans on Nov. 29, 2011. Mitchell is 310-188 all-time at Marquette.

Men’s Basketball The Marquette men’s basketball team collected one of its best campaigns in school history in 2011-12, reaching the Sweet 16 for the second-straight year. The Golden Eagles finished 27-8 overall, including a best-ever 14-4 mark (second place) in the BIG EAST Conference. MU concluded the year ranked 11/10 in the national polls, made its seventh-straight NCAA Championship appearance and earned 20-or-more victories for the seventh-consecutive season as well.

Sophomore Katherine Plouffe was named honorable mention All-BIG EAST, while freshman Arlesia Morse was selected to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. Plouffe led the Golden Eagles with 13.5 points and 8.1 rebounds. She was Marquette’s leading scorer in 14 games and finished the season ranked in seven BIG EAST statistical categories (points, rebounds, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds and minutes).

MU’s 27 victories were the second-most in school history and included the title at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Golden Eagles finished 15-1 overall at home, including a perfect 9-0 slate in league action at the Bradley Center. MU’s strong fan base allowed the program to finish 13th in the nation in attendance, the sixth straight top-15 finish. Senior Jae Crowder was tabbed the BIG EAST Player of the Year and named All-BIG EAST First Team. He is just the third player (Jim McIlvaine and Dwyane Wade) in school history to be named the league’s top performer. He was also named Second Team All-America by Associated Press and became the 44th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Senior Darius Johnson-Odom earned All-BIG EAST First Team and Honorable Mention AllAmerica honors. He finished 11th all-time at MU in scoring (1,659 points) in just three seasons and is among the program’s career leaders in 3pointers made and attempted. He was also named first team all-district by the NABC.

Head coach Terri Mitchell celebrated her 300th career victory on Nov. 29, 2011 following a 96-35 defeat of New Orleans. She is one of two active Marquette coaches to surpass the 300-win mark.

Women’s Soccer The Marquette University women’s soccer team finished the 2011 season 18-4-0 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship. Its 18 wins are the third most in program history, and marked MU’s 16th consecutive winning season. MU won a share of its third straight BIG EAST American Division title with a 10-1-0 BIG EAST record. The regular season title was the seventh in program history. Marquette finished the season ranked No. 16 by the NSCAA and No. 19 by Soccer America. It achieved a program best ranking of No. 5 (NSCAA) for two weeks (Oct. 17 and Oct. 25). Natalie Kulla finished her career at Marquette as one of the most decorated players in program history. Kulla earned the BIG EAST Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Year Award along with being named the league’s goalkeeper of the year for the second consecutive season. 5


HIGHLIGHTS 2 011-12 TEAM HIGHLIGHTS

Volleyball

The Marquette women’s soccer team captured its third consecutive BIG EAST American Division Championship in 2011. The Golden Eagles have lost just three conference games since 2009.

Senior Kerry McBride was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and picked up All-BIG EAST First Team accolades for the second consecutive season. Along with Kulla and McBride, Maegan Kelly received AllBIG EAST First Team honors, while Ally Miller was named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team and Mady Vicker picked up All-BIG EAST Rookie Team honors.

Men’s Soccer The Marquette men’s soccer team boasted a remarkable 7-2-0 record in league play and claimed its first-ever BIG EAST Conference Blue Division Championship under the direction of sixth-year head coach Louis Bennett. The Golden Eagles, who were ranked as high as high as No. 20 nationally, finished 9-8-2 overall after advancing to the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST tournament for the second consecutive season. Calum Mallace was named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year while collecting First Team All-BIG EAST honors. Bennett and staff was named BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year. Freshman C. Nortey earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team. Mallace also garnered Second Team All-America (College Soccer News) accolades, while Nortey was selected to the All-Freshman Second Team by Soccer America. The women’s volleyball team built off a promising 2010 campaign with its best season in program history in 2011. The Golden Eagles, led by conference coach of the year Bond Shymansky in his third season, compiled an overall record of 24-11 and a mark of 12-2 in BIG EAST play. With a talented group of returning hitters and an everimproving back row, Shymansky added league freshman of the year Chelsea Heier into the mix as his starting setter and never looked back. Not only did the Golden Eagles notch their first NCAA Championship appearance in program history, but they knocked off No. 24 Western Kentucky in the first round of the tournament.

Bond Shymansky earned coach of the year honors in 2011 from the BIG EAST Conference and AVCA Northeast Region.

Setter Chelsea Heier was named freshman of the year in the BIG EAST and AVCA Northeast Region.

Along with Heier, seniors Ashley Beyer and Ciara Jones along with junior Danielle Carlson all earned all-conference honors. Carlson, Jones and Heier also earned AVCA All-Northeast Region and AVCA Honorable Mention AllAmerica honors.

Women’s Tennis The Marquette University women’s tennis team completed the season 12-11 and finished tied for sixth place at the BIG EAST Tennis Championship. The winning record marks the second consecutive season with a winning mark and head coach Jody Bronson’s 16th overall. The Golden Eagles had five players with winning singles records, which included 15-or-more singles wins. Olga Fischer led Marquette with a 19-12 overall mark, including a 7-6 record at No. 1 singles and 6-2 total at No. 2. Fischer, who was Marquette’s first-ever All-BIG EAST honoree, completed her career at Marquette with 83 singles wins to stand fifth on Marquette’s all-time wins list. Gillian Hush finished her career at Marquette with 81 singles wins, which ranks sixth on MU’s all-time singles wins list.

Men’s Tennis The Marquette men’s tennis team reached double figures (10) in dual-match victories for the ninth-straight season under head coach Steve Rodecap and also earned a share of fifth place at the 2012 BIG EAST Conference Championship. Sophomore Dan Mamalat, who garnered the team’s most valuable player honor for the second-straight year, was named to the All-BIG EAST Team for the first time in his career. The Philadelphia, Pa., native led the team with 21 singles victories, including 13 in dual competition. Freshman Cameron Tehrani was second on the squad with 20 singles wins and senior Jonathan Schwerin finished third all-time at Marquette with 74 career doubles victories. Marquette’s schedule featured matchups with six nationally ranked opponents and the Golden Eagles posted a 7-2 mark at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

The men’s cross country team tied its best finish in the BIG EAST Conference since joining the league with a seventh-place showing at the 2011 championships in Louisville, Ky. The men followed that up by placing eighth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Toledo, Ohio, their highest finish since 2007. Senior Blake Johnson led the Golden Eagles at each meet during the 2011 campaign, including top-three finishes at the Crusader Open, Badger Opener and National Catholic Invitational to begin the year. The women’s squad placed ninth at the BIG EAST Championships and recorded a 17th-place finish at the Great Lakes Regional. Freshmen Elisia Meyle and Kenzie Vicker led the Golden Eagles at six of their seven meets, indicating a positive future for the squad’s younger runners. Both the men’s and women’s teams earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USFTCCCA) All-Academic honors for their performance in the classroom.

Track & Field

Men’s Golf Marquette finished its second season under head coach Steve Bailey with a 302.38 team scoring average in 11 stroke-play events in 2011-12. Sophomore Michael Motz was Marquette's top-ranked golfer, leading the squad with a 74.52 scoring average. He posted the best finish of his career (T-2nd) in the team's third event of the season at the John Dallio Memorial in Lemont, Ill.

Cross Country

Junior sprinter Kyle Winter became the first Marquette student-athlete to claim a BIG EAST Indoor Championship, winning the 800-meter run on Sunday, Feb. 19 at The Armory in New York. The men’s team also fared very well at the indoor conference meet, recording its most points and highest finish at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships. The Golden Eagles notched their second-highest point total at the outdoor meet. Michael Motz earned team MVP honors as a sophomore in 2011-12.

The Golden Eagles' best team finish came at the 2012 BIG EAST Championship at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla., where Marquette placed eighth overall led by Motz and senior Matt Haase who both tied for 31st at 9over-par 225 for the tournament. It was MU's third top-10 finish of the season, including 10th place finishes at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore., and the Wolverine Intercollegiate in Ann Arbor, Mich. In addition to newcomer CJ Swift, who averaged 77.26 strokes in nine of the team's 11 events, Coach Bailey welcomed the addition of freshman Adam Chester at the beginning of the spring season. The Morecombe, England, native received co-medalist honors in a dual match against Florida Atlantic and boasted a top-20 finish at C&F Bank Intercollegiate at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.

Senior Tyler O’Brien competed in his third NCAA outdoor preliminary round on May 25 in Austin, Texas in the 200-meter dash. O’Brien ended his standout career with the Golden Eagles as the program record holder in the indoor and outdoor 200, as well as the indoor 300. Thrower Jon Kusowski also had a stellar final campaign, scoring in three events at the BIG EAST meets, while notching 17 points. The women placed 15th at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships and recorded 29 individual marks during the season ranking among the top 10 in Marquette history.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Through both our academic and co-curricular programs,

Marquette strives to develop men and women who will dedicate their lives to the service of others, actively entering into the struggle for a more just society. We expect all members of the Marquette community, whatever their faith tradition, to give concrete expression to their beliefs by giving of themselves in service to those in need.

Several Marquette athletic programs participated in the Briggs & Al’s Run & Walk for Children’s Hospital, which is hosted on MU’s campus.

Hank Aaron State Trail Cleanup

Cure For Kirby (SAAC) Members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) organized the group’s annual Cure for Kirby Fundraiser, which helps in raising funds for the Children’s Medical Research Foundation.

Friends of Jaclyn (Men’s Lacrosse) The men’s lacrosse team has "adopted" a young boy named Jacob, who has pediatric brain cancer. The team members spend time with Jacob throughout the course of the year, both on campus and at activities in the area.

Al’s Run & Buzz’s Bunch (MBB & WBB) The men's and women’s basketball team continued its tradition of involvement with the Briggs & Al's Run & Walk for Children’s Hospital, participating in several pre-race activities. The Golden Eagle men’s team also hosted members of Buzz’s Bunch for the fourth-straight year at several home games throughout the 2011-12 season.

(Track & Field) The Milwaukee County Park System has long provided an invaluable training ground for the student-athletes on Marquette University's men's and women's track and field teams. Those men and women showed their appreciation by dedicating an afternoon to cleaning the western end of the Hank Aaron State Trail. Roughly 80 track and field athletes headed out from Marquette Gym with trash bags in tow to lend a helping hand to the county park system that has provided them with so much.

Pink Out! (Women’s Basketball) In conjunction with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Pink Zone initiative, the Marquette women’s basketball team raised $5,000 in support of breast cancer awareness. The Golden Eagles participated in the fundraiser for the seventh-straight season.

GOLDEN EAGLE STANDOUTS Kulla, Mallace Named Metcalfe Senior Outstanding Athletes Women’s soccer player Natalie Kulla won the Ralph H. Metcalfe Outstanding Senior Female Athlete Award, while men’s soccer player Calum Mallace was named the 2012 Outstanding Senior Male Athlete.

Natalie Kulla Kulla completed her career in 2011 as one of the top goalkeepers in BIG EAST history. She is a two-time BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and the holder of Marquette's single-season (16) and career (43) shutout records. She finished her career with a program-record 0.74 goals-against average and ranks second on the school's career wins (58) and minutes (7835:04) charts. The St. Louis native helped the Golden Eagles to three consecutive BIG EAST American Division titles and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, including a berth in the Sweet 16 in 2010.

Mallace, who became the first Marquette studentathlete to be drafted by Major League Soccer, was a second round pick of the Montreal Impact in January. Mallace was named the 2011 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year as he helped the men’s soccer program to its first-ever BIG EAST Blue Division championship. The Torphichen, Scotland, native graduated in three-and-a-half years with a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting and electronic communication.

GOLDEN EAGLE STANDOUTS Brice Cleland Named 65th Annual McCahill Award Recipient Former Marquette distance runner Brice Cleland was named the recipient of the 65th annual McCahill Award, presented to the Marquette senior student-athlete from the previous year who demonstrated the highest performance in scholarship, leadership and athletics.

Jae Crowder Tabbed BIG EAST Player of the Year Marquette forward Jae Crowder was named BIG EAST Player of the Year by a vote of the league's head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players. Crowder averaged 17.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game this season, helping Marquette to a 27-8 overall record and a program-best 14-4 mark in the BIG EAST. He ranked among the national leaders in steals per contest and was among the league leaders in seven different categories. He was also a member of the All-BIG EAST First Team.

Cleland was a four-time letter winner in both cross country and track and field during his time at Marquette, serving as team captain of both squads during his junior and senior seasons. He was the men's cross country team's most valuable performer in 2009 and 2010 as he led the Golden Eagles at the BIG EAST Championships and NCAA Great Lakes Regional both years. In the classroom, Cleland graduated summa cum laude with a triple degree in exercise science, psychology and theology. His academic accomplishments marked by a cumulative grade point average of 3.93, made him a fourtime BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection and a CoSIDA Academic All-District V First Team selection.

Kyle Winter Kyle Winter claimed Marquette’s first-ever BIG EAST indoor title with his time of 1:52.99 in the 800 meters.

Maegan Kelly Maegan Kelly was named All-BIG EAST First Team and matched a MU record with 40 career points (14 goals, 12 assists).

Jae Crowder is the third men’s basketball player in school history to claim league player of the year honors. He was selected in the second round of the 2012 NBA Draft and signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks.

Darius Johnson-Odom Darius Johnson-Odom was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection and finished 11th all-time in scoring (1,649 points) at Marquette.

Kevin M. Byrne, Jour '71 Kevin is an institution. As senior vice president of public and community relations for the Baltimore Ravens, an organization he has been with for 31 years, he oversees an award-winning staff responsible for the team's website and most of the print publications. He also has provided media relations assistance at 24 Super Bowls and two Pro Bowls and was Marquette's sports information director during the final years of Al McGuire's tenure.

Thomas R. Packee, Bus Ad ‘64 Playing basketball at Marquette was just the beginning of Tom's athletic connection to the university. He served four terms as M Club president, the longest in history; was a member of the men's basketball alumni reunion committees; is on the Marquette Athletics Board; and, with wife Pat, has committed to establishing endowed scholarships for men's and women's basketball through their estate plans.

Marquette’s ability to consistently recruit championship-caliber student-athletes is highly dependent upon the success of the Blue & Gold Athletic Scholarship Fund and the generosity of over 4,500 alumni and friends. Closing the Athletic Scholarship Funding Gap

Maurice “Bo” Ellis, SP ‘77 Bo's daughter succumbed to a rare liver disease in 2003, three years after she graduated from Marquette. So he and his wife, Candy, started the Nicole Ellis Foundation, which is funded mainly through private gifts and the annual Warrior Golf Outing. The foundation also provides an annual scholarship through Marquette's Ethnic Alumni Association and supports the American Liver Foundation.

For the 2011-12 academic year ... The Blue & Gold Athletic Scholarship Fund raised $3.3 million from about 4,500 alumni and friends. The Blue & Gold Fund provides current-use scholarships (“one-and-done” resources).
