Editor’s Choice HIVE BEEN THINKING OF YOU! by Jan Hunnicutt www.jans-gonestampin.blogspot.com

RED BALLOON by Judith Gowdy www.jgsnook.blogspot.com.au

I

am really excited about this new feature - we have so many amazing cards come in that we ooh & a over them all. Here are a couple that really caught my eye for this issue. The Hive Been Thinking of You card by Jan (featured on page 21) is striking with the black, yellow & white color scheme! I love how she kept her card clean and simple really making it pop. I also love how she lined the envelope in matching pattern paper creating a custom & elegant one of a kind card. The next card that caught my eye is Red Balloon by Judith Gowdy (featured on page 48) with the white on white design and just some simple washi tape as an accent. Her coloring takes center stage on this card that could really be for any occasion. Just goes to show you don’t have to have loads of embellishments to make an impact. Both of these ladies will receive a special prize pack from Designed To Color with their complimentary issue! We almost always have an open call going and if not, we do have challenges each month on our blog. We can’t wait to feature you, but it won’t happen if you don’t take a chance and submit...so what are you waiting for?

DIY: Light Box Lisa McKinney www.lisabeesponderings.blogspot.com

Do you ever look at photos of cards on blogs and enviously admire the quality of their photography? Do they use the same colored papers as you, but they seem brighter and truer to life? Crafters know the importance of getting a good picture. This is especially true if you are taking pictures for magazine submissions, design team submissions, or even to share your creations on your online galleries, or blogs. Without the right lighting colors can become muted or gray thus making your creations look dingy and while taking pictures outside in natural daylight is ideal, it isn’t sunny year round for people like me and even when it is, sometimes the sun is too bright! For this reason, many crafters invest in light boxes and special lamps like the OttLite® which provides natural daylight. Light boxes and the OttLite® are great to own, but both can cost you a pretty penny. I don’t have the funds to invest in either a light box or an OttLite®, so I decided to try to make my own version of each and was able to replicate the concept with excellent results…for just about $6.00! All you need is a box, white cardstock, tape and an OttLite® bulb! I found that the perfect size box for photographing my cards and smaller creations is a USPS Priority Medium Flat Rate box available for free at any US Post office; however, any medium sized box will work. You can purchase OttLite® bulbs at most craft and hobby stores and they are also carried at home renovation supply stores like Home Depot and LOWE’s. I buy mine at LOWES for about $6.00 each. That’s spendy for a light bulb, but much cheaper than the entire lamp! Let’s get started… Materials • Priority Mail Box- Medium Flat Rate (11” x 8.5” x 5.5”) • White Paper—preferable White Cardstock If you use the Medium Flat Rate box, you need the following size pieces: Two 8 ½” x 11” and two 8 ½” x 5 ½” pieces • tape (masking, packing or double sided) and scissors • Desk Lamp with long neck for angling • OttLite® bulb

For my light box I am going to be using the Priority Flat Rate box and masking tape. 1. Begin by opening up the box and taping up the bottom. You can see from this photo that the inside of the box is very dark at this stage. 2. Trim off one of the long flaps. Setting the box on its side, the flap you trimmed off will be the top one. Now fold out the side flaps to allow more light inside. You can trim these off it you want, but I’ve left mine on. Notice how we’ve already decreased the amount of shadow inside the box significantly. 3. Using your paper, line the inside. A standard size piece of cardstock will be a perfect fit in the back of the box. Use another of the same size for the “floor” of your box and a standard size cut in two for the sides. Carefully tape them down so they fit tight and none of the cardboard shows through. This is why I like the Medium Flat Rate box—the measurements fit standard 8 ½” x 11” cardstock perfectly. Your DIY light box is ready to go! See how the white paper nearly eliminates the shadows? 4. To get your light ready, simply insert your OttLite® bulb into any desk lamp that can be angled—if you don’t already have one, you can find them at second hand stores or new for less than $10 at a variety of stores. Set your lamp outside your light box and you are ready to try it out! 5 Here is what the light box looks like with the lamp turned off in a typical room with overhead lighting. Turning the lamp on, you can see how the shadows vanish—giving you a beautiful white space for taking photos! Now simply add your creations to the box and start playing with how to angle your light. Your photos will be much clearer and the colors will be much more true to life!

EDITOR’S NOTE: Here is a picture Lisa took using her homemade light box instructions detailed on these two pages. I think it looks GREAT and remember you can easily use a larger box using the same steps outlined if you need to photograph larger projects.

The Color Crew share their coloring spaces...

Lizzie Sanchez www.ohsnaplizzie.com When some people create, they like a nice clean environment, not this girl! I like to create at my little green desk with baners and papers and photos of things that inspire me right up in my face! I love color and I love patterns. I love to be inspired by both of these things, even if I’m just doing a simple coloring job on a flower. I’m big into “thrifting” and that is where I found my desk and desk organizer. there is nothing wrong with a little second hand love. Of course, you can never, ever under any circumstance have enough Hello Kitty.

Lisa McKinney www.lisabeesponderings.blogspot.com My crafting space is my beautiful desk that my husband made for me! It’s huge and custom designed to include a shelf underneath for all my paper containers. My primary medium (Copics) are kept in a 14”x11”x3.25” plastic box. I have over 100 Copics (Ciao & Sketch) and they easily fit in this -- of course if I get many more, I’ll need another box! But it keeps them nice and flat and because the box is clear, I can look through the sides of it to find the color I need.

Rhea Weigand www.passionatepapercreations.blogspot.com I just discovered this wonderful way to organize my Copic Markers!!! Seriously awesome! It is a double deep Art Bend. To hold and separate the markers I have a grid for a Florissant light that I got from Home Depot. The grid is cut 19 squares by 19 squares with 4 square dowels in each corner. There are rubber bands around the dowels to hold the grid in place and I glued the dowels to the bottom of the Art Bend with E6000 adhesive. Since I have mine slanted on a shelf I shimmed the bottom of the grid with chip board so the weight of the markers won’t shift. This holds every color of Copic except for the blender if you have the flourescence colors. I do not have them so I have room for my multi liners. When you want to go color with friends, put the lid on and go! If you use a coupon the total cost for organizer is about $30. I got this idea from my friend Jennifer.

rom main dishes and salads to the final decorative touch on a dessert, lemon zest is used in the culinary world to add that extra bite of flavor and pop of color. The word zest seems to be synonymous with vim, vigor and vitality. Having a zest for life is a bold and intense passion for living. The color “lemon zest” brings to mind bright sunshine and citrus hues. Whether used as a primary color or as a supporting tone, Lemon Zest is being seen all over the paper crafting world. It’s just a happy color! SUNNY

Pattern papers, stamps and embellishments seem to have taken off with the HEXAGON shape. We asked you to use them in any way you wanted as you created some beautiful projects to submit. Here are a few of those beautiful projects to inspire you as you decide whether or not this particular trend is on the mark!

I love the added detail and repeating element of the envelope liner die to tie everything together for a nice presentation.

Jennifer Dove’s Copic Corner

 Intermediate Copic Certified  Author - Build-A-book Copic Techniques  Blog: Just4FunCrafts.blogspot.com  Published online class – Create with Copics (download link on my blog)

“My name is Jennifer Dove. I am a 40ish year old, mother to two boys with a wonderful hubby. I lived in Alaska for 12 years where my job was running heavy equipment. After moving to Arizona, I chose to follow my artistic side. Two years ago I became Copic certified and have been addicted ever since. I teach local classes, and because of high demand, branched out into doing weekend Copic retreats all over the states. Many call it Copic Boot Camp. I have written a book for my classes and retreats where YOU color the samples and place them into the book so you have a reference guide for your future coloring. I am on the design teams for Stampendous!, Doodle Dragon Studios (Dustin Pike), Make it Crafty and Talkabout Impressions. I have cards published in two of the Copic Coloring guide’s – Level 2 and 3. I am also excited to announce, I’ve partnered with Annie’s Attic where we’ve just filmed my online coloring class called; Create With Copics; Beginner’s Guide. It is now available to download on my blog!

In this issue we are going to talk about selecting the right paper and ink pads to insure happy coloring!

Are Copics just a craze or can one be just crazy for Copics? You decide! How does one get started? It all happens by buying just a few markers. We are then stuck trying to figure out the best paper, the best ink. Then the biggest question, how does one use these markers? It can be overwhelming. Lets start at the beginning. How do we choose the style of pen that suits us? Copics come in a variety of marker choices. When I first started coloring I chose the Ciao markers because they were slightly more affordable. They come in 144 colors. The marker numbers that identify the pen are located on the side of this round pens' barrel. These pens are refillable and you can change out the marker tips. These were fantastic but I soon discovered that if I wanted to airbrush, I like the numbers on the end of the pens and wanted to expand beyond 144 markers as well. For this I would need the Sketch markers. Sketch markers come in 346 colors and use the same ink and tips as the Ciao markers. One side of the marker has a chisel tip while the other is a brush tip. They are refillable. They have oval cases instead of the round that the Ciao have. Less common in the crafting world (but getting more popular) are the Copic Original markers and the Copic Wide markers, but they do serve their purpose. Original markers have a very fine tip and are square. Airbrush compatible, and Wide markers have a very wide tip and should be purchased with a refill as the ink storage in the pen is small and you will refill it more often. Both are refillable and you can replace the tips. Once you choose what marker suits your needs you need to figure out the right paper and stamp pad. We do this by testing and research. Because Copics are alcohol based markers they act differently and are used differently then a water-based marker. We want to find paper that doesn't soak up the ink before we have a chance to blend the colors together. We want to find a stamp pad that doesn't smear when the alcohol from the pen touches the lines. You will want to experiment with both paper and stamps pads. I am going to take some of the guess work out of the equation. Choosing a stamp pad The stamp pad that I have found works the best is the Memento Tuxedo Black by Tsukineko. Memento stamp pads come in a range of colors, whether you use this stamp pad or not you need to find one that is compatible with the ink. Here is a test I have done using different stamp pads. You could try the exact same thing with stamp pads you have around your craft space. Just stamp an image and color it. If it smears or runs you know that it is probably best not to use it with your Copics. Also use your blender pen (0) over part of an image to verify its compatibility with the blender pen.

Choosing the best paper This is a bit harder to decipher as we all have our own way to color and blend. I prefer a tight smoother type paper so that my ink sits on the surface longer allowing more time to blend. Some prefer a softer paper. I also know some very talented artists that use regular laser printer paper and get amazing results. No matter what paper you decide to use you will want learn how it react with the ink for best results. I like to do a few tests to the cardstock. First test is the 3-second rule. Stamp an image (used ladybug image). Being consistent hold the pen for 3 seconds in one place on each paper sample to see how for it bleeds. This will tell you how soft the paper is or toothy where is sucks in the ink. Next I stamp another image and color it using blending colors. This shows how vivid your colors remain and how the paper reacts to blending. You will notice when you test your papers they all look white until you lay them next to each other. Some paper has a yellow hue others a slight gray. This will effect how your Copic colors appear. Here are some papers I have chosen to test. Below, I will talk about the characteristics. After testing all the different papers here are my findings: 1. Glossy Cardstock - Must wait for stamped image to dry. No Copic Bleed. Hard to blend as Copic ink can smear. 2. Vellum - Color on reverse side stamped image to avoid ink smear. No Copic Bleed. Colors transparent. 3. Domtar Cougar - softer paper, slight bleed, Copics are not as vivid 4. Bazzill Brilliant White cardstock - Medium Bleed, Copics remain vivid, paper soft and "toothy" 5. Neenah - Medium bleed, soft and "toothy" cardstock 6. Dove White (Hammermill 100#) - No Bleed, smooth slight gloss, vivid color, heavy weight 7. Gina K - very little bleed, Smooth, vivid color, heavy weight 8. Printer Paper (generic) - thin, maximum bleed, depending on brand colors vivid 9. Bazzill Simply Smooth - medium weight paper, smooth, vivid color, minimal bleed 10. Sams Club (Walmart) Georgia Pacific cardstock - Maximum bleed, "toothy" lightweight, Copics not vivid 11. Watercolor Paper - maximum bleed, Copic colors muted, soft paper, textured 12. Copic X-press It - Minimal bleed, slightly muted Copics, heavy cardstock, smooth, gray tone to paper The best results really rely on the ink pad and paper you use. If you find the results are not to your satisfaction after coloring you might want to consider finding a better ink pad or higher quality paper. So before you get too far ahead of the process locate a quality paper so that you don't fail before even getting started. We want to have success, feel enjoyment and see beautiful results!

Hue’s Who

Lil’ Inker Designs Shop: www.lilinkerdesigns.com Blog: shoplilinker.blogspot.com

I was suprised to find out that Lil Inkers creator Laura began her start in this industry, when she discovered a need for a specific set that she couldn’t find anywhere! That sparked her into forming this business along with her high school friend, Ariana Grant who is a graphic artist! Talk about crafty--I think that is just awesome! She now produces high quality clear photopolymer stamps along with steel cut dies (most coordinate with their stamps) that cut through cardstock, felt and cork with ease. Lil’ Inker stamps range form cuties to functional to vintage and ALL are perfect for coloring! One of the things I admire most is that all their products are made HERE in the USA! I hope you will enjoy learning more about Lil’ Inker Designs and Laura and make sure you check out the amazing inspiration from The Color Crew on the next couple pages. Don’t forget to make use of the coupon on the opposite page - exclusive for our readers! DESIGNED TO COLOR: Lil Inker Designs has cute & vintage!!! We love coloring them. Give us some background on yourself & what made you get started in the stamp business, then dies?

LID: Funky Town - Silver Glitter. Not the splotchy glitter either. Something that would give a nice even coat of silver sparkle because the perfectionist in me needs each nail to be the same!

LIL INKER DESIGNS: Actually, when we opened our doors in 2010 we focused on dies and coordinating stamps. We had an idea for set that we wanted for our own crafty collection but couldn’t find on the market. I found myself emailing a very popular designer in this industry with my idea and then began exploring options to create it myself. It wasn’t until a year or so later we decided that our love illustrated stamps was lacking in our store and the collaboration with 2 Cute Ink and later Sugar Kissed Cottage was formed.

DTC: What is the last book you read? The last movie you saw?

DTC: Do you craft or make cards yourself?

LID: I am really very much a homebody. I’m totally good being right here in Dedham, MA just outside of Boston which is where I grew up.

LID: Oh, HECK YES! HA! I was introduced to stamping at a home party in 2003 and was instantly hooked! For some reason I fell away from stamping briefly but after returning to my craft room in 2008 I’ve never looked back! DTC: Where do you find your inspiration? LID: I spend the majority of my free time on Pinterest.com looking for inspiring ideas for card making as well as for new products for our store. I am truly a pin addict! Sometimes I even challenge myself to pick up an every day object in my home and draw some sort of design inspiration from it whether it be for making a project OR designing and product! DTC: If you could be any character from a book or movie, who would it be & why? LID: I think it would be fun to be Hermione Granger! I could be friends with Harry, uber smart AND have a magical wand... yes, please! I already have the crazy hair, so why not? DTC: With the new year upon us, do you do the whole resolution thing? LID: Hmmmmm, not really. But this year I will resolve to continue my journey as a Weight Watchers Member. DTC: If you could design & name your own nail polish what color would it be? 38

LID: I am a total cliche, LOL! Fifty Shades of Grey and I also just read Mitch Albom’s The Time Keeper. The last movie I saw was Something Borrowed. I’ve seen it 1000 times. I love any and all romantic comedies! DTC: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

DTC: Favorite song or band? LID: Um, yes. Don’t laugh. I am a 36 year old Beastie Boys Fan. I am LOVER of ALL music but if you were to stop by and visit while I am packing and shipping orders I would definitely be in my office jammin’ to the Beastie Boys or some other fun, dancey dance music. DTC: Favorite food? LID: Hands down, home made pizza and mac and cheese!! Or everything in moderation! HA! DTC: Favorite vacation spot? LID:

I love Cape Cod!

DTC: This one is fun: Think fast, tell us the first one or two words that comes to mind when I say the following: White - clean and simple Cute - my son Vintage - Grammy’s basement floral -funky pattern lace - old cold - Brr :( hot - Atomic Fireballs candy (which I eat constantly) Designed To Color

DTC: Night owl or early bird? LID: Night Owl! There is something about everyone else asleep in the house and me working until the wee hours of the morning which is very appealing to me. I am NOT a morning person. At. All. DTC: Anything you can tell our readers to be on the look out this year from Lil Inker Designs? LID: I’m really excited about what we’ll be releasing this year! I hope that the Designed To Color Readers will be too!
