Message from the President At press time, I’m writing to you from a nearly deserted Huntington campus in the midst of what can only be described as unprecedented circumstances. Most of our Marshall community is displaced from their “normal” work environments and it is certainly a trying time for all of us. I’m sure you have faced some of the same challenges in your own situation. We started with a transition to online education through April 13, then made the difficult decision to complete the entire semester virtually and postpone our spring commencement until it was safe to hold such a large celebration. I am so proud of the response of the Marshall community to ensure our students’ safety and their ability to continue the semester on a virtual basis. Right now, our physical locations are closed to all non-critical personnel, students and the public. During this time, however, Marshall University is continuing to serve students and prospective students virtually, however long these arrangements need to be in place. If there is one thing I know for certain about the Marshall community, it is our commitment to helping others. Members of our Marshall Family have stepped up to assist in a number of ways outside of their regular responsibilities. Some examples are on this page. I appreciate the hard work, dedication, and patience and understanding of all our faculty and staff as we attempt to continue our mission of educating our students in these difficult times. I miss the “old times” and hope we will return to some new normalcy soon, when I can see our students and our faculty and staff in person. Marshall’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety is coordinating the collection of Stay safe and healthy. Sincerely, Dr. Jerome A. Gilbert

Faculty members from Marshall’s School of Pharmacy made FDA-approved hand sanitizer several times to donate to various charities around Huntington, as well as the Huntington Police Department and the Huntington Fire Department. Additional ingredients were purchased to continue their efforts.

Biological Sciences Professor Dr. Suzanne Strait spearheaded an effort to rapidly produce surgical masks made from high-end furnace filters. Here is one of the co-founders, Marshall alumna Patricia Rogers, who designed the mask.

f you drive by the old BASF plant on Fifth Avenue in Huntington and take a quick look to your left, you can see all the way to Third Avenue where the hulking, shuttered, ACF plant still stands. Both are industrial artifacts of bygone days in the city. In between the two thoroughfares is Marshall’s diamond in the rough. Construction equipment already has been at work on the eight-acre site clearing the land for Marshall’s very own on-campus baseball stadium. It’s all a part of the “Herd Rises” fundraising campaign which will help finance the $22 million facility. For the better part of 60 years, Marshall’s lack of a baseball stadium to call its own has almost been a cruel joke. “On Oct. 26, I told my wife I had the groundbreaking on our new baseball stadium,” said Athletic Director Mike Hamrick. “She said, ‘New stadium, where’s the old one?’” At that groundbreaking former Marshall Pitcher and Major League All-Star Rick Reed had his own gallows humor moment: “I figured it up, and Marshall has played about 3,000 baseball games here,” said Reed. “Well, not here at Marshall. That’s one helluva road trip.” The searing one-liners have been replaced by a fervent optimism that this project can be a showpiece for Marshall University and the city of Huntington. “We can do a lot of things with this baseball stadium to bring people to Huntington,” Hamrick asserted. “We can bring commerce and prosperity to Huntington. We can bring people to stay in our hotels and eat in our restaurants. This new stadium is something we all can be proud of.” Hamrick said the hope was to have the stadium open for the 2021 season, but the administration is working with the architects to make some “value engineering” modifications, which may delay the project to a 2022 opening. The stadium will seat 3,500 people, with a clubhouse and three locker rooms, and give the program a home base it’s been lacking since baseball was born at Marshall in 1896. This is the news that former Marshall Coach Jack Cook has been waiting for since 1967, when he became the head coach. How long ago is that? Carl Yastrzemski and

Harmon Killebrew shared the major league home run lead that year. Late inning pitchers weren’t “closers” back then, but “relievers.” The Herd’s vagabond program has been hopscotching all around the Tri-State ever since. It’s hard to call it a home game when you still need to have a travel budget to get back to the residence halls. “What’s neat to see is the look on Coach Jack Cook’s face,” said Huntington Mayor Steve Williams about the 93-year-old baseball icon. “He’s been promised a field since the 1960s and that promise is finally being fulfilled. It shows the partnership between Marshall and Huntington. This new baseball stadium can enable Coach Waggoner to not just lead a good team in a great conference, but build a program of national prominence.” Jeff Waggoner is entering his 13th year as Marshall’s baseball coach. Conference USA is challenging enough when you have to travel to Hattiesburg to play Southern Miss, or to Houston to take on Rice, who won the College World Series in 2007. Imagine not having to drive to Appalachian Power Park in Charleston or out to the Kennedy Center on Route 2 to host fellow Conference USA schools. Nearly every year the league is routinely among the top 10 baseball conferences in the country.

The Marshall University baseball program has a long and storied tradition on campus. The completion of a new, long-awaited $22 milion baseball stadium in 2021 is expected to reinvigorate the program and help the university build a sports program of national prominence.

The new stadium can be a crown jewel for the city and for the program. “The city of Huntington, and Marshall’s fan base, can actually watch the team play in one of the best conferences in the country,” said Waggoner. “They can see some of the star players we’ve been producing and other great players in this league. I think it’s going to be awesome for springtime in Huntington, West Virginia.” For Waggoner the recruiting possibilities a new stadium can bring are numerous. Tracking down talent is one thing. Asking that talent to come play for your school when there’s no on-campus facility is another thing altogether. Waggoner would like nothing better than to see summer baseball at the new facility, which he says would be a boon to recruiting. “You can host high school tournaments here,” Waggoner said. “You can bring in teams from all the surrounding areas to play in tournaments and that helps recruiting. That’s how you’re going to have a great baseball program. But, I don’t think you want to be in a situation where you have a minor league team playing here for a year or two and then they leave. Plus, minor league teams don’t take care of your facilities.”

This new baseball stadium can enable Coach Waggoner to not just lead a good team in a great conference, but build a program of national prominence.

An artist's rendering of Marshall University's new baseball stadium, which will be located between Third Avenue and Fifth Avenue just east of the indoor practice facility.

The stadium will also broaden Marshall’s footprint to the east of the city. As motorists drive down Third Avenue approaching the Huntington campus, the first glimpse they’ll get of a Marshall athletic facility will be the baseball stadium. “The location of this stadium, just a short walk from the east edge of our campus, is absolutely fantastic for the Marshall community, particularly our students,” said Marshall President Jerome Gilbert. “I envision students and their friends walking over to watch college baseball, something they haven’t ever been able to do at Marshall. Our new baseball stadium beautifully augments our existing athletic facilities and I couldn’t be happier with its physical location, not to mention its outstanding design.” Major League Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby once said of America’s pastime, “People ask me what I do in the winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.” Soon — hopefully as early as next year — baseball fans all around the region will be watching out their windows. After all these years, the wait will be well worth it.

ow many balls can Jeff Waggoner juggle at the same time? That’s not some kind of riddle, just the day-to-day to-do list for Marshall’s head baseball coach. Coach Waggoner has been knee-deep in the architectural plans for Marshall’s brand new baseball facility. He’s been a part-time construction expert on one phone line while fundraising on another. Oh, and he’s also recruiting and running practice at the same time. And all that came before the Herd headed south for a trip to open the season against the four th ranked University of Florida Gators in Gainesville. He knows best what a difference a home facility can make. “Since I’ve been here at Marshall, I would say I’ve had four teams that could have been NCAA teams if we had a home field. No question about it,” Waggoner said. “Home teams win more games. Last year was the first year we played our conference games at Route 2 and we didn’t lose a weekend series — just by having a home field. Now think about what having a home field and a large crowd would do for our team.”

One of the better players returning this season includes senior catcher and infielder Zach Inskeep from Coos Bay, Oregon.

Waggoner’s team came off a 29-28 season, one of only 4 Conference USA teams to finish with a winning record. The Herd was picked 10th in this year’s preseason poll. Unfortunately, fate intervened and most of the schedule was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. “Our strength is our depth on the mound, starting with senior starter Wade Martin and closer Michael Guerrero. Offensively, we lost a lot of great players that led the league in a lot of categories, but have really good players coming back. Geordon Blanton, Zac Inskeep, Peter Hutzal, Luke Edwards and Jaren Lovely are key returners.” Off in the distance, that new baseball stadium that is under construction occupies his thoughts, and the teams he can bring to Huntington. “ We s t V i r g i n i a University will play here,” Waggoner said. “Other teams that have committed include Ohio State and Virginia Tech. These are teams that are willing to do a home and home series because of our new ballpark. I think it’s great for our players, our fans and anyone who loves baseball.”

The 53-Year Wait Is Over New baseball stadium at Marshall is dream come true for legendary Coach Jack Cook.

T

Jack Cook was Marshall University’s head baseball coach from 1967 to 1989. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994.

he day the announcement of a new baseball stadium reverberated through Huntington, Coach Jack Cook borrowed a line from former Reds’ broadcaster Joe Nuxhall. “I’m rounding third and heading for home,” Cook said. “You better hurry up.” No one deserves to see a new ballpark more than the 93-year-old former Marshall baseball coach. He’s been waiting for more than half a century to get the news that the program would have its own on-campus facility. In fact, the absence of a stadium almost kept him from accepting the job in 1967. “Whitey Wilson was the athletic director,” said Cook, “and I was having pretty good success at Huntington High. We had won three state championships. He wanted me to come to Marshall and I was reluctant at first. I said, ‘We don’t have a field.’ And he said, ‘We’ll get a field when you get here.’” Cook’s teams played a bulk of their games at the old St. Cloud Commons ballpark in Huntington’s west end. Getting the field playable was oftentimes a major problem. “It flooded every spring,” said Cook. “We would be playing down south, and when we came back to Huntington we had to get all the catfish and the carp off the field.” Cook is the all-time winningest coach at Marshall with 422 wins. He took two teams (1973 and 1978) to the NCAA tournament. In the 1978 tournament, his team beat Florida State and Clemson before losing to Miami of Florida in two straight games, falling one game short of making it to the College World Series. The day of the stadium announcement, Cook said, “This is probably the happiest day of my life.”

Athletic Director Mike Hamrick holds a $5,000 Herd Rises donation from Cincinnati Reds legend and Hall of Famer Johnny Bench at a book signing. Bench was in town last October to speak at a Marshall Artists Series event.

Double Play Hall of Famer Johnny Bench and former All-Star pitcher Rick Reed take the lead in raising funds for new stadium.

O

n a beautiful October afternoon in downtown Huntington, Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Bench was holding court in his dressing room tucked below the stage at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center. It’s one of those dressing rooms in the catacombs of the ornate theater where stars like Rudi Vallee, Smokey Robinson and Taylor Swift once prepared for their acts. In walked former Major League All-Star pitcher Rick Reed, with his son Mason in tow. Rick came to this very

theater as a kid to watch movies and now he was introducing his son to his childhood hero. “He was my favorite player growing up,” said Reed of the 14-time All Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner. “Not many people know this, but all my numbers growing up in baseball had a ‘5’ in them because of Johnny Bench.” The interesting part of the introduction is Reed never told Bench that he was a major league pitcher. That’s not his style. It was only when it was brought up in the conversation that Bench remembered Reed. The discussion then

turned to Reed’s career in the majors (15 years) and his record (93-76). Bench remarked that anyone who pitched that long in the “bigs” and had a winning record is a really good pitcher. When Johnny Bench delivers a compliment to a baseball player — like a treasured autograph — you save that forever. Later in the evening, Bench pledged $5,000 to the Herd Rises campaign because he’d been hearing the details of Marshall’s traveling baseball program and decided he wanted to help. “You really need to have a showcase facility to recruit kids today,” said Bench. “You don’t want to be in a situation where recruits come in and see a baseball field they don’t want to play on, or their parents don’t want to come watch the games. A new stadium is a great opportunity for Marshall and I want to help because Coach Jack Cook deserves it.” Upon hearing of Bench’s gift, Reed told Marshall University Athletic Director Mike Hamrick, “I can do better than that. I’m giving $1 million.” Besides maybe Johnny Bench, no one has more love

Rick Reed and his wife, Dee, donated $1 million to the Herd Rises fundraising campaign. Reed attended Marshall from 1984 to 1985, playing one season under Head Coach Jack Cook before being drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He later pitched for the New York Mets from 1997 to 2001. During that time he played in the MLB All-Star Game twice.

for baseball than Rick Reed. He grew up on the west side of Huntington and took to the game immediately. He was a star from Little League to his time at Huntington High and then on to his career at Marshall. In those days the Herd played at the old University Heights location off Norway Avenue. But Reed was never a complainer about the drive, or the digs, at the Heights. “My first year there was ’85,” said Reed. “I didn’t think it was horrible. The way I approached baseball then and until the last day I was playing was this: If someone was willing to give me a uniform I didn’t care where the field was.” Reed had a surprise pitch up his sleeve that fall day. He made an astonishing $1 million pledge to help with the new facility. Now, along with Jeff Montgomery and Dan Straily, 29 other former players have jumped on board,

hoping to help the program get to the next level. That’s all part of an investment they’ve been hoping to make for a new baseball home. “I’d always heard we were getting a new stadium,” said Reed. “I heard it when I played. I thought when that happens, I’ll get involved. My wife and I sat down with our financial guy and that’s how we came up with it.” And just like his playing days in the big leagues, Reed delivers again. ombating the region’s opiate crisis takes all of us. It takes policymakers and health care providers. It takes those in higher education and those in recovery. And in the Hansen family, it takes father and son. Like most kids, Zach Hansen, M.D., grew up hearing how important it was to care for those in need. His father, Bob Hansen, a community leader in behavioral and mental health, and mother, Linda Hansen, a special education teacher for 32 years, practiced what they preached. “I’ve always had that exposure to caring for those a little less fortunate than the rest of us,” said Zach Hansen, an ’04 graduate of the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and the medical director for PROACT (Provider Response Organization for Addiction Care & Treatment), a multidisciplinary recovery program. “Sometimes there’s a reluctance to talk about things like mental health, behavior health and physical disabilities. In our house, that wasn’t the case.” Bob Hansen served as executive director of Prestera Center for 22 years, retiring in 2012. His retirement was short lived, however. Just days after retiring, Hansen was named executive director of the Cabell-Huntington Coalition for the Homeless. He was instrumental in the founding of Recovery Point, formerly the Healing Place of Huntington, and served briefly as its director also. In 2017, Hansen was named director of addiction services at Marshall Health and the School of Medicine. In December 2018, Gov. Jim Justice appointed him executive director of the DHHR Office of Drug Control Policy. “I’ve really given retirement a bad name,” Hansen laughed. “But I’m blessed with good health, and I’m blessed with energy and passion to help my city and state. I’ve been excited about the different challenges I’ve been asked to take on.” At Marshall, Bob Hansen helped develop the medical school’s approach to addiction science, which seeks to

address not only the immediate health concerns of addiction but also the long-term ramifications. “At Marshall, there’s a complete commitment to solving the problems of this community, and it starts at the top, from President Gilbert and Dean [Joseph I.] Shapiro all the way down,” Hansen said. In the Office of Drug Control Policy, he’s taking the work that is being done in Huntington and at Marshall and applying it statewide, developing programs and services to address the substance use disorder epidemic throughout the state. His decades of experience have made one thing clear: When it comes to combating the opiate crisis, Bob Hansen said, partnership is key. “There’s no question that it takes everybody,” Hansen said. “It’s incredibly uplifting to see so many not only recognize that we’ve got a problem but also want to be involved in the solution. This problem has been going on for a number of years, and there’s an element of fatigue — but there’s also enthusiasm and passion. There’s tremendous hope.” At PROACT, Zach Hansen sees that hope every day. In addition to serving as PROACT’s medical director, he oversees the center’s medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program. His career certainly bears a resemblance to his father’s; however, he said he never felt familial pressure to enter the field of addiction medicine. Making a difference just runs in the family. “I always knew I wanted to make a difference,” he said. “That was something I saw in my parents every day, in the way they conducted their work and in the way they lived their lives.” PROACT is both a place and a concept, Zach Hansen said, providing assessment, education, intervention and treatment solutions all under one roof. PROACT, formed in October 2018, is a partnership among Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center, Marshall Health, Thomas Health Systems and Valley Health.

At Marshall, there’s a complete commitment to solving the problems of this community, and it starts at the top.

make a difference. That was something I saw in my parents every day.

— Zach Hansen, M.D. Zach Hansen, who is also a family medicine physician with Valley Health, said what’s unique about PROACT is that providers from partnering organizations only work a few hours each week at the center, so no one individual carries the entire load. As a result, the center is able to offer a full range of services: MAT and abstinence-based treatment, spiritual care, recovery coaches, employment assistance and even help with things like housing, food and transportation. “We all have particular strengths and things we’ve been doing well for years, and we’re able to tailor our programs drawing from those strengths,” he said. He said PROACT started as an idea on a piece of scrap paper — and it wouldn’t have come to fruition without his father’s guidance and support. “I was watching football with Dad one Sunday, and I got out this piece of paper where I had jotted down this idea that I really felt could make a significant difference,” Dr. Hansen recalled. “We talked through it, like we talk through everything.” From there, Zach Hansen began seeking partnerships —“I took meetings with anyone who’d talk to me,” he

said — and eventually the puzzle pieces fell into place. He said his wife, Dr. Rebecca Hansen, Marshall’s director of campus-based services for the West Virginia Autism Training Center, has supported him every step of the way as well. “I’m so proud of Zach,” Bob Hansen said. “I get tearyeyed talking about it. We talk all the time — about work, about family, about ideas. I think we both share a sense of pride about the work that’s being done and the potential that we see for the future.” Looking toward imminent challenges like generational substance abuse, polysubstance abuse and the substantial health concerns associated with IV drug use, both the older and younger Hansen agree that a spirit of partnership is vital to face those challenges head on. “We’re certainly making progress. Overdose fatalities are declining, and we’re seeing positive results,” said Bob Hansen, adding a few words of fatherly wisdom. “But if we pat ourselves on the back, we should do it quickly, then put our nose back to the grindstone and keep working.” Katherine Pyles is a freelance writer and editor living in Huntington, West Virginia.

Remembering a remarkable career that will have a lasting impact on Marshall University

r. Alan B. Gould served in a lengthy list of posts at Marshall over his more than 45-year career at the university. “I came here to teach in 1969,” Gould said in a 2010 interview. “I had no aspirations to do anything else. But little by little, one thing led to another.” Indeed they did. His death in September 2019 closed the book on a Marshall career that can only be called remarkable. Just a partial list of Gould’s many job titles over the years includes: professor of history, chair of the history department, assistant

to the president for special projects, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, provost and executive director of the Drinko Academy. He even served as the university’s interim president from 1990 to 1991. B o r n Au g . 2 , 19 3 8 , i n Huntington, Gould graduated from the former Huntington East High School in 1956 and by 1962 had earned a B.A. and an M.A. in history from Marshall. He then went on to West Virginia University where he earned a Ph.D. in history. While there he also met the love of his life, Mary Nell. “No matter what his job title was, Alan Gould was first and

foremost a historian,” said Dr. Montserrat Miller, professor of history at Marshall and Gould’s successor as executive director of the Drinko Academy. “He viewed the world through a historical lens, and he reveled in studying the past all the way through his dying days. Marshall became a better university as a consequence of Alan Gould’s insistence on the importance of history.” “He was innovative, imaginative and wrought many positive changes to the university and community,” said Miller. “The number of programs he helped initiate or restructure is nothing short of vertigo-inducing.” To cite but a few:

“Marshall became a better university as a consequence of Alan Gould’s insistence on the importance of history.” — Dr. Montserrat Miller, professor of history & Gould’s successor as executive director of the Drinko Academy

As its founding director, Gould brought to life the Regents Bachelor of Arts program, which enables adult students to count their life experiences as credit hours toward a degree. Since the program was created in 1975, it has enabled more than 6,400 students to earn R.B.A. degrees. He played a major role in creation of the Yeager Scholars program. For 33 years the program, named for famed air ace Chuck Yeager, has welcomed a new class of gifted high school graduates. Gould was the chief architect of MU’s Metro Fee, which gives high school graduates from nearby counties in Ohio and Kentucky a

hefty discount from the university’s out-of-state tuition. And Marshall’s SCORES Festival, which each year brings more than 1,000 high schoolers to campus for a series of academic competitions, was largely his handiwork. “But these and other achievements,” said Miller, “were actually just the beginning part of his record, a prelude as it were. Because in the fall of 1994, Alan entered into the happiest and most productive years of his professional life. It was then he was named executive director of what would come to be called the John Deaver Drinko Academy for American Political Institutions and Civic Culture.” The Drinko Academy sprang from a remarkable professional and personal friendship forged between Gould and Drinko. A Marshall alumnus, Drinko was the managing partner of one of the nation’s largest law firms. He and his wife, Elizabeth [Libby], were generous supporters of higher education at a number of universities, including Marshall. Alarmed by the political polarization and incivility they saw creeping into the national discourse, they set up the academy with a number of aims: To encourage civility, encourage responsible citizenship, recognize and reward outstanding faculty by naming them Distinguished Drinko Fellows and honor community members who demonstrate selfless service to the common good. “But they did more than that, much more,” said Miller. “It was Alan, as interim president in 1990, who issued the first call for construction of a new Marshall library. Then, as executive director of the Drinko Academy, he and John

Drinko rolled up their sleeves and rallied a huge number of supporters to make the new library a reality. That is why the Drinko Library is called the Drinko Library. But they didn’t stop there. They also determined that we needed to have a statue of John Marshall, so they and others came together to make that happen, too.” Meanwhile, Gould put together a proposal to establish the John Marshall Professorship in Political Science, which John and Libby supported. As a consequence, Marshall was able to entice no less a national figure than noted biographer Jean Edward Smith. “This list of Alan’s achievements goes on and on,” said Miller. “It

includes, among others, the establishment of the John Marshall Fife and Drum Corps, the Simon Perry Center, the Elizabeth Gibson Drinko Honors Convocation, the Dr. Carter G. Woodson Lyceum and, of course, Constitution Week.” In 2010, when Gould was asked if he ever thought about retiring, he replied: “I enjoy the campus atmosphere and putting together things like Constitution Week. There are great colleagues and great students here, so why would I want to play golf?” James E. Casto is the retired associate editor of The Herald-Dispatch and the author of a number of books on local and regional history.

capitol day STATE CELEBRATES

“Marshall University Day” IN JANUARY 2020 AT THE CAPITOL

M

arshall University faculty, staff, students and alumni had an opportunity to show their support and help celebrate “Marshall University Day” in the state of West Virginia on Thursday, Jan. 30, in Charleston. More than 40 colleges, departments and organizations were represented at the annual day at the legislature as Marshall showcased its programs and projects to elected state leaders in both the House and the Senate at the State Capitol building. Tables filled with literature and green and white trinkets lined the hallways outside the Senate and House chambers during a busy morning highlighting many of the wonderful things happening at Marshall and touching on important talking points imperative to the university. The university also had an opportunity to showcase the Marshall Rises campaign — the university’s most ambitious comprehensive campaign — for the first time to lawmakers. To date, Marshall Rises has already

reached two-thirds of the $150 million goal and the university anticipates surpassing that within the five-year effort. Among the highlights of the annual trip to Charleston included a reading of proclamations declaring Jan. 30 as “Marshall University Day” in both the House and Senate chambers. The proclamations were received by Marshall Univer sity President Jerry Gilbert, Marco and student body leadership, and accompanied by performances by the John Marshall Fife and Drum Corps and a reading from a student actor portraying John Marshall. University officials and deans, along with representatives from many different departments and organizations, were on hand to interact with legislators in promoting Marshall’s academic and community offerings. You are cordially invited to join the Marshall University family on Nov. 14, 2020, in Huntington or watch via the livestream as the community hosts a celebration of life with distinguished guest speakers and tributes leading up to the turning off of the fountain’s water. Following the event, the Thundering Herd football team will face Middle Tennessee State in the annual blackout game honoring the crash with special black jerseys and throwback helmets. Due to the high demand for lodging during this memorable weekend, guests are encouraged to contact area hotels in advance to assure a room for the event. Activities and guest speakers have not yet been determined, but check back with HerdAlum.com for a full schedule and additional information surrounding the 50th Memorial Fountain Ceremony.

Helping Hand RENAISSANCE MAN ERIC GEORGE MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN HIS COMMUNITY AND AROUND THE WORLD By Larry Crum

T

here are many different types of creative people in this world. There are people who are defined by their mathematical or linguistic abilities; those who are musically or artistically gifted. There are even those who excel at social or interpersonal dynamics. And then there are those who are good at working with their hands. While Eric George, M.D., undoubtedly falls into multiple creative categories when it comes to his natural gifts and abilities, there is no denying that his most important contributions to the world come through the care and craftsmanship of his hands. By trade, George is a world renowned hand surgeon based in New Orleans, Louisiana, but his abilities and reach go much further. He is also a venture capitalist. He is a real estate investor. He is an author, a philanthropist, a father and a husband. And he is a proud Son of Marshall. George is a native of Huntington, West Virginia, and has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the world of medicine thanks to his start at Marshall University. “People often assume that I chose Marshall University because I’m a Huntington native and my family couldn’t afford out-of-state tuition. But truthfully, I chose Marshall because it’s an exceptional university, academically, athletically and in terms of campus life,” George said. “I knew Marshall would put me in a position to succeed upon graduation, no matter what avenue I pursued. I also knew that Marshall would instill in me the values, loyalty and sense of community that you only find in a

small town. Everyone I had interacted with at Marshall was warm, caring and inviting. So I knew the school had a special community that I wanted to join.” George received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Marshall University and later completed his General Trauma Surgery Residency at Michigan State University and a Fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Grand Rapids Area Medical Education Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Subsequently, he completed an Orthopedic Hand and Upper Extremity Reconstructive Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. Today, George is a professor of hand surgery at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and Tulane University in New Orleans. He founded two health care organizations, which he currently runs as CEO: the Hand Center of Louisiana, an ambulatory practice, and Omega Hospital, a specialty surgical hospital. George works with thousands of patients each year through his practice, including working regularly with NFL and NBA athletes in the New Orleans area and other high-profile celebrities and professionals. And it is his passion for caring for others that has helped drive his career aspirations. “I am naturally a caregiver. I like meeting people, helping them and caring for them. Knowing this about myself made the choice to attend medical school an easy one. And ever since I got into medical school, I’ve never doubted my decision,” George said. “Today, I see approximately 400 patients each week, and after practicing for over 26 years, I’ve met a lot of people. It’s the

connection I create and sustain with my patients that keeps me invested in the work I do.” But that is far from the end of this story. George became interested in the business side of his profession and launched his career as an entrepreneur and investor in 2006 when he founded and became the CEO of ERG Enterprises, a venture investment firm based in New Orleans. In its early years, ERG made investments in health care facilities before moving on to other projects. “I’ve always been fascinated by business. It was an interest that differentiated me from my classmates in medical school. When I first began practicing medicine, I focused on becoming the best physician I could and trying to establish a reputation as an excellent physician. It was during that time I was fortunate in building lasting relationships with the pillars of the New Orleans community,” George said. “That provided me a springboard for launching into entrepreneurship. In 2003, I had the opportunity to buy a specialty surgical hospital with 12 other physicians. We secured financing, bought Omega Hospital and I immediately took over as CEO. That experience taught me how to lead an organization and introduced me to important partnerships with investment bankers, lawyers, accountants — the support system needed to run a successful business.” The Hand Center of Louisiana is the largest hand and upper extremity practice in the entire Gulf South. Omega Hospital is a specialty surgical center that serves patients across the Greater New Orleans region and Gulf South. And ERG Enterprises has grown to a company that exceeds more than $1 billion in assets. “I credit the success of each enterprise to our incredible teams and partners,” George added.

Today, ERG owns or partners in several major hotels in New Orleans and is currently involved in several real estate development projects. And it all stemmed from George’s passion for his community, vowing to help revitalize New Orleans following the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Since then George has helped restore several structures affected by the hurricane including the famed Orpheum Theater, which was shut down and fell into a state of disrepair. His investment team helped restore the building and it reopened in 2015. “There are many developments taking place at ERG that I’m thrilled about. For instance, we just opened a new speakeasy bar under an iconic theater we own, the Orpheum Theater. The venue is called the Double Dealer. It’s a unique, one-of-a-kind bar set in the backstage area of a 1920s vaudeville theater,” George said. “We are also involved in several recent real estate development projects. We recently acquired the historic United Fruit Company building in New Orleans, which was home to one of the most powerful organizations and CEOs of the early 20th century. United Fruit Company became what is known today as Chiquita Banana. The building was United Fruit’s global headquarters. It’s approximately 100,000 square feet and located in downtown New Orleans on historic Saint Charles Avenue. The building brings a rich history filled with cultural significance, which is one of the reasons we bought it and are working to restore it.” Through his work renovating the United Fruit Company property and other historic landmarks, George and ERG Enterprises are being featured in an upcoming public television documentary about his endeavors. It represents just one of several national media appearances George is making this year. In addition to the work in real estate, George and ERG are also branching out into other areas across many different arenas — from education to medicine to bourbon. “Our team at ERG is also excited about several poststartup companies that we have invested in, which are improving the human condition on a global scale,” George said. “One company, Diathrive, is transforming how testing supplies are funded and supplied to patients with diabetes, fundamentally improving the challenges of living with that condition. Another company, Modern Teacher, is transforming the U.S. public education system to provide students with better learning through smarter use of technology. Pharmajet, a medical device maker, is eradicating polio worldwide by pioneering needleless technology for administering vaccinations. “We have other exciting investments as well. Black Feather is one example. It’s a bourbon company that

was founded by Jeremy Rawle and Travis Pastrana. We also either own or have partnered in the acquisition of six major hotels in New Orleans. I’m excited about all of these developments, and I credit our team for making them happen.” Away from his professional life, George takes pride in his ability to give back through several philanthropic endeavors, with the help of his family. He established the Col. Aaron C-Dot George Scholarship at Marshall University in honor of his brother, who was killed in a training accident as a test fighter pilot. That scholarship provides financial support to full-time undergraduates who are Yeager Scholars. He also supports the George Family Scholarship Fund at New York University Law School, offering full tuition to NYU law students who are the first in their immediate families to go to college. The family is also the benefactor of the St. Martin’s Episcopal School George Cottage in New Orleans and a school for orphans in Mombasa, Kenya. “Giving is such an important practice. Collectively, my wife, Kim, and daughters Chloe and Cassidy have made it a priority,” George added.

Recently, George wrote his first book based on his life experiences called We: Ditch the Me Mindset and Change the World, highlighting his personal and professional philosophy to which he attributes his success in medicine, entrepreneurship and life in general. Through the many endeavors George has taken on in his professional and personal life, he attributes the skills and values instilled in him at Marshall as the launching pad for many of his achievements. A 2014 recipient of Marshall’s Distinguished Alumnus Award, George still revels in the opportunity to talk to others about his experiences in Huntington and how they have helped shape who he is today. “It provided me the foundational knowledge, life skills and connections to become successful in medicine and really jump start my career,” George said. “I can think of numerous opportunities, life-changing ones, where my connection to Marshall helped me capitalize on them and advance my career as a result. For instance, graduating medical school and getting into my residency program. And the strength of Marshall’s alumni organization has been invaluable.”

he Marshall Family bond is strong, a bond that does not end when you leave the university. On the other hand, the college experience is unique — you are never again surrounded by such a large group of your peers with similar interests and goals in life. After walking across the stage and “Pomp and Circumstance” plays, what do you do? Often, recent graduates move to new cities for new jobs, with limited knowledge of the new place. What if navigating a new job, city and lifestyle could be made more familiar? What if you were able to connect with folks who had a similar college experience? That’s exactly what our alumni chapters help do. Reaching alumni with 23 active chapters across 11 states and Washington, D.C., alumni chapters are the representation of the Marshall Family across the globe. Under the guidance and direction of Marshall University, the Marshall University Alumni Association and the Marshall Foundation, an alumni chapter provides engagement opportunities for Thundering Herd alumni

Owstons win multiple awards for Holocaust Remembrance Day campaign Jim Owston (M.A. ’91, Education Specialist ’99, and Ed.D. ’07) and his daughter Lora won “Best in Show” and numerous other awards for their 2018 WV Remembers public relations campaign for Temple Beth El’s Beckley Annual Holocaust Remembrance Day. The latest honors pitted the duo against professional advertising agencies in a six-state region in the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) — East Central District’s 2019 Diamond Awards competition. This latest honor follows Owston & Owston’s winning the 2018 “Best in West Virginia” award in Morgantown in June 2019 during the West Virginia PRSA chapter’s annual Crystal Awards Gala.

The impetus for the campaign was a 1996 interview of Max Lewin, Beckley’s only Holocaust survivor, which was slated for a TV program Jim Owston produced at the time. “Max called me the next morning and begged me not to air the piece, as it was such an emotional experience for him,” said Owston. “He requested that it not be played until after he died.” Lewin passed away in 2002, but the 20-minute interview remained shelved until 2018. Being inspired by other PR campaigns in the state, Jim Owston, a mass communication professor at Alderson Broaddus University, thought that it might be a good project on which to collaborate with his daughter Lora,

then an Alderson Broaddus junior mass communication and journalism major. “We hoped that we might be able to submit our work for consideration,” said Owston. “We never expected that that we would have the highest score in the state, let alone in the region — it’s mind boggling.” The two Owstons, who were only in Beckley on the weekends, worked part-time on the pro bono campaign at a distance. With a shoestring budget of $515.00, the pair used media contacts to aid in bringing 165 people to the April 15, 2018 Beckley Holocaust Remembrance Day; one family even drove six hours from Maryland to attend. The Lewin interview became the centerpiece of the commemoration and the basis for a PR campaign that also included branding, a logo, blog, posters, radio PSAs, a feature radio story, videos, a press release, a newspaper article, radio interview, website, social media presence, newspaper ads and other media coverage. “The ability to hear Max tell his story — in his

own words — that was the draw,” said Owston. “It really wasn’t anything we did — we were just the conduit of the message.” The campaign was active between February and April 2018. “We’re extremely grateful for the support of the community and three universities where the event has been hosted,” said Tom Sopher, president of Temple Beth El. “Max Lewin would have certainly been proud of its recent success.” In addition to “Best in Show” and “Best in West Virginia,” Owston & Owston’s WV Remembers campaign won eight Diamond and four Merit awards at the regional level and 11 Crystal awards and one Honorable Mention at the state level — a total of 26 honors. The Owstons competed against hundreds of other entries in the process. The PRSA East Central District serves West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan and Western Pennsylvania.
