Working together to enhance coach tourism business
T
he Coach Tourism Association brings all sides of the industry together with a regular series of networking events. CTA tour operators, wholesalers and suppliers all benefit from building close working relationships that help everyone deliver better holidays and excursions to our customer base, and improved returns for members’ businesses.

CTA organises a series of networking opportunities throughout the year and also works with other organisations to provide priority access for our members at their events. The highlight of our calendar is the Conference & Workshop (see page 15). The Workshop, which forms a key part of the CTA Conference, provides an unrivalled opportunity for

building relationships that can make your business grow. Operators benefit from getting an early insight into the latest offers from suppliers and advice on any emerging trends that can help to refresh their tours and excursion programmes, while suppliers get the chance to talk directly to leading coach tour operators and build strong relationships that boost sales opportunities. The Workshop format involves a series of short appointments in a ‘speed dating’ format which means you get the opportunity to meet a wide range of sellers or buyers and set the groundwork for followups with those that will benefit you. Both operators and suppliers tell us that the Workshop at our annual event is a key benefit of CTA membership, and at this year’s event, more than 750 individual appointments were scheduled between buyers and suppliers. In addition to the semi-formal networking at the annual Workshop, CTA membership provides regular opportunities for social networking with fellow coach

tour industry colleagues that helps keep business ideas fresh and contacts up to date. In addition to the Conference & Workshop, CTA organises networking events each season with recent destinations including London, Brighton and Coventry. All of these are key events for members that provide just the right blend of business and pleasure. CTA also works closely with the organisers of the British Tourism and Travel Show and World Travel Market. CTA members get a key benefit with priority access to the opening day of WTM through a dedicated registration link and a members’ reception on the opening morning, and the BTTS show, which includes a special CTA reception on the first day to give members an additional networking opportunity.

C
oach tours and excursions are a proven environmentally-friendly way of providing access to destinations and attractions across the UK, Ireland and the Continent. Travel in comfort by coach to stately homes and gardens, theatres, outdoor events, heritage towns and cities and coast and countryside to enjoy the best of Britain and beyond.
The coach is one of the most environmentally friendly ways of travelling, with average carbon dioxide emissions per passenger per journey being around 1.5 times higher for rail, five times higher for air and six times higher for car travel. New tour coaches are some of the most sophisticated vehicles on the road, with many costing more than £350,000 and providing a host of luxury features including reclining seats, air-conditioning, double-glazed windows, wi-fi access and usb sockets, plus a host of onboard facilities. New coaches are equipped with modern low-emission Euro 6 engines that enable operators to have access to the new Low Emission Zones that are being introduced in a number of towns and cities. New coaches also have lane departure notification to warn the driver when the vehicle begins to move out of its lane, and advanced emergency braking to help prevent collisions or to limit their consequences, as well as active cruise control to adjust vehicle speed and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Modern, top-of-the-range coaches deliver a luxury
6
experience with club-class style leather seats, extra legroom, drop-down screens, toilet facilities and kitchens. Many tour operators offer a door-to-door service using smaller vehicles to collect passengers from home and take them to the tour coach. Passengers can sit back and relax, comfortable in the knowledge that a professional coach driver will be your personal chauffeur with no need to worry about map reading, getting lost or losing tickets or luggage. Coach tourism makes a significant contribution to overall tourism spending with coach passengers spending as much as 30 per cent more per head than other visitors and spending more than £1.4billion a year. And more than 18 million day trips are taken as part of an organised coach tour, with spending of £766million, with more than five million people taking day trips to visitor attractions on an organised coach tour. And the success of London’s theatres is boosted by coach groups, accounting for around 15 per cent of the 14 million-plus theatre seats sold annually.

Helping to enhance your tour programmes

TA re-launched its Fam trip programme in 2019 with a spectacular debut event in partnership with Devon’s Top Attractions. The four-day event was attended by coach operators and tour wholesalers and proved a great success, taking in local attractions and hotels in a packed itinerary.
Devon Unlocked Fam trip.
The group trip started in Exeter with a special guided tour of the Cathedral from Red Coat Guided Tours and also included visits to Bicton Park Botanical Gardens, Seaton Trams, the Donkey Sanctuary and Stuart Line Cruises. An overnight at Buckfast Abbey’s own hotel at Northgate House was a special treat and included

a showcase with many members of Devon’s Top Attractions. The group then took in South Devon and Dartmoor before visiting Torquay and Torbay, including a trip to Kents Cavern and Torre Abbey. Accommodation and hospitality was kindly provided by a number of hotels including the 4-star Victorian Rougemont Mercure Hotel, Best Western’s Livermead Cliff Hotel in Torquay and Headland Hotel. CTA is now actively planning further Fam trips which will be organised to provide solid educational value for key staff within member businesses and provide a unique insight into what is on offer in a particular region to help you enhance your tour programmes. In October 2020, a trip to South Wales is being organised, in partnership with Southern Wales Tourism. This looks like being another must-attend event including trips to Tredegar House, Wales Millennium Centre and Llanerch Vineyard. See you there!

survey
Coach tour customers have their say in Silver Travel survey
C
TA has once again partnered with Silver Travel Advisor and supported the annual survey that the mature travellers’ review website carries out each year to understand coach tour passengers’ perceptions and experiences.
The latest Silver Travel Advisor Survey collated the views of around 2,500 respondents and some of the key findings are set out below. Around 40 per cent of respondents had taken an escorted tour or coach holiday in the past year, up from 33 per cent in the previous survey, with those having taken a trip of four days or more up from 13 per cent to 21 per cent. Have you taken an escorted tour coach holiday or day trip in the past three years? The most popular coach trips were those with a heritage element, followed by tours with activities and trips to concerts, exhibitions or attractions.

conference
CTA Conference highlights positive future with coaches offering lowest emissions per passenger
T
he Government’s plans for a net zero emission future will create major opportunities for the coach industry, transport experts told the Coach Tourism Association’s 2020 conference in York. Stressing the need for Government to move people away from cars to high occupancy vehicles, Confederation of Passenger Transport chief executive Graham Vidler told CTA members: “The only way to travel that is more environmentally-friendly than coach involves pedalling.” He added; “When people choose to travel by coach rather than by car or plane we get better air quality and reduced congestion which helps to combat the climate emergency by taking cars off the road and planes out of the sky. There would be absolute chaos at tourism hot spots around the country if everyone travelled by car.” Inaccurate public impressions of the pollution created by coaches were highlighted by Dan Hayes of the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership whose figures showed that, in terms of NOx emissions, buses and coaches contributed just 5% compared with cars and vans at 75%. He said: “Not all diesels are dirty. There has been a big broad-brush picture painted, what with things

like diesel gate. But from our testing, which we have done with both TFL and National Government, we can safely say that Euro Level 6 vehicles - whether they be gas, diesel or hybrid - are all clean. We have the test certificates to prove it and we have published these on our website. “An important point is that emissions per passenger are much much lower from a coach than they are from a private car and that is a key message you need to press home whenever you are talking to a local authority.” Looking to the future Dan Hayes said that, with Euro 6 ‘being as clean as you can get’ the next step would involve renewable fuels – now being worked on – followed by a gradual move to electricity, with some 5-10 electric coaches likely to be running in the UK by the end of the year. “Change is coming, but it will take a long time. So no need to panic. We have the right incentives in place for buses – and our message to government is, if you want the coach industry to do the same you have to provide the same. We have a growing infrastructure for continued on page 16 www.coachtourismassociation.co.uk

hydrogen and electric buses – we should have 1,000 zero emission buses by the end of the next year - and that infrastructure can be used to support the coach sector as well.” On a day to day operational level the European Tourism Association’s Tim Fairhurst outlined the extent to which ETOA was pressurising local

governments in tourism centres to offer sensible access to city centres for coaches. “There are anti-coach sentiments, some of which are completely irrational. The suggestion that coaches contribute to congestion in Rome is completely farfetched and has no scientific basis. The stated reason is to improve air quality in Rome. But the approach adds to it because you simply get more private cars which do more harm to the air quality than a Euro 6 coach. None of this makes any sense – it is pure politics. “Another good example is Amsterdam where a vocal minority have been particularly hostile to coach tourism. That has found its way into the ear of politicians who, among others, have contributed to a vision document that says they don’t want any coaches at all inside the A10, the motor ring road of Amsterdam, by 2025. “We talked to planners in the local authority and said: ‘Terrific vision but what happens when people arrive at the A10 ring? They said: ‘Exactly’. There are quite sensible people in bureaucracies around Europe who are not looking to make your life difficult and who are also receptive if we come to them with solutions.” The CPT’s Andy Warrender also sought to calm delegates’ fears about the immediate effects of BREXIT pointing out that around 40,000 coaches crossed the Channel in 2019 running 35,000 coach tours in Europe serving some two million UK holidaymakers. continued on page 17

expressed to London & Partners’ Fiona Mulliner and City of York Council’s Julian Ridge concerning the lack of overnight parking and facilities for drivers, to the extent that coach operators were being driven away from London, and York may be missing out on additional coach tourism in the absence of adequate facilities. The record number of delegates attending this year’s conference at the DoubleTree by Hilton York from February 23-25 also took part in two one-to-one workshops, including a special Yorkshire workshop on the final day.
He told members: “There’s been a lot written about what might happen, the usual media attitude of never let the facts get in the way of a good story, and a good crisis. But, is there a crisis, is that really the word…..no. “People still want to travel to Europe, and you are there to take them. Why should there be any change?” He also reminded delegates that during the existing transition period, operators will still use the EU Waybill and Community Licence and UK drivers will still use UK photocard licences, the DCPC and EHIC cards. We also continue to attract new operator and supplier members and have welcomed many new ones since the last Handbook was published. For operators, membership provides a key forum to meet with other coach tour specialists and provides the opportunity to build important relationships with suppliers in the sector as well as
supporting the role of CTA in promoting travel and tourism by coach. Our supplier members cover all areas of the tourism world from hotels and ferries, to attractions, destinations, software suppliers, insurers, and business services. All of them value the key networking opportunities afforded by CTA membership and recognise it as an extremely costeffective way to build and retain business. We are delighted to welcome a number of new members who have joined over the past year:
Alison Lamb and Zoe Fleming, Liverpool Football Club Stadium Tours.

Coach & Tour Operators
C
oach operator members of the Coach Tourism Association embody the spirit of the association in promoting excursions, short breaks and holidays by coach. They range from small, family-run companies with a handful of coaches to the largest operators, who provide tours across the UK. In between are many large independent and family-owned companies which are the leading operators in their regions. Together they operate tours throughout the UK and Ireland, to mainland Europe and beyond, including flight-based tours into North America, Asia, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Most coach operators provide executive, air-conditioned coaches for private hire, corporate events, conferences and special occasions, and offer contract hire to tour operators within the travel industry. Wholesalers & Group Travel
T
our packages, which include the booking of hotel accommodation, transport and visits to tourist attractions, are arranged for coach operators by leading wholesalers who are members of CTA. They and many other members are group travel specialists, organising trips and holidays for friends, social clubs or companies. These experts will not only find the best deals but advise on where to go, where to stay and what to do. In short, they take care of everything from coach hire and flight bookings to hotel reservations, local excursions, activities and attractions, as well as all administration. AC TOURS

Ticket Agencies & Hospitality Providers
C
oach tour operators have played a major part in driving the increased demand for theatre tickets, musicals and concerts, not just in London but at venues throughout the UK. Ticket agencies are keen supporters of the CTA and provide a personal service to our coach operator members as do hospitality providers, who can book a wide range of restaurants and pubs that are keen to welcome coach parties.
