Building with HCEB

HCEB machine

Learning from vernacular architecture LEVS architecten Dogon Country, Mali 2015 - 2017

Vernacular architecture is a useful way of starting to look for an appropriate construction technology. It can provide many clues about which local materials there are, and how they might be used. In fact, it is the product of a long process by which people have gradually learnt how best to solve the local problems in relation to the climate. Understanding local culture and tradition, the design can be rooted in the local context and

responds to local conditions. At the same time architecture should also deliver a positive contribution to the development of the community, education and the economy. To satisfy this, construction projects are set up and performed in collaboration with local contractors. Together we search for innovation within the existing context. Over the past few years, building with hydraulically compressed earth blocks (HCEB) has really taken off. In the process, a local tradi6

tion of building with unbaked and soft limestone has been transformed into an innovative and technically high-quality version: the HCEB, which are produced using soil from the construction site and 20 tons of hydraulic pressure. The machine first finely grinds the soil, after which three percent cement is added. The press each time produces a block of 8,5kg. This process minimizes production and transportation costs, and reduces environmental impact.

Practical training College

Improving the education

Sangha, Mali LEVS architecten collaboration: Dennis Meijerink, Tea Kufrin 2015 The design of a practical training college for 800 students in the Malian village of Sangha provides the area with a construction and agricultural education facility. The project consists of various ensembles of classrooms, hangarworkshops, teacher-residencies, and technical service buildings, all surrounded by gardens and stone walls. The first cluster of classrooms, the residencies, and the administrative buildings are already functional. This Practical Training

College is realized with the collaboration of the Ministry of Education and it is a public school for both girls and boys. An important objective of this new college is the fact that it offers practical training linked to the daily environment and living conditions of the area. The architecture is in line with local culture and building traditions. The barrel vault roofs, constructive and no-supportive walls, and floors are made of the same material, found at and 12

taken from the construction site itself: earth. The earth is being processed on-site by a mobile machine that produces hydraulically pressed earth-blocks, thereby heavily reducing the costs of transport and source-material. These HCEBblocks also provides optimum cooling climate. With every project, the technology and application processes are being optimized and further developed. Recently, the first dome-roofs made from HCEB-stones were finished.

Primary school

view of the classrooms

A new pedagogical approach Bombou, Mali LEVS architecten 2016

The primary school is located in the village of Bombou in the center of Mali, in the open plain at the Bandiagara Cliff in the Dogon Country, the area where the Dogon and the Peul live. The school is an ensemble of three classrooms, a sanitary block, an office for the director and the teachers, a storage room and a common outdoor area. The school is intended for children of two different cultures, the Dogon and the Peul. Although they are so close to each other, they are

struggling to communicate because of the many language variations and dialects. The new school will connect these two different ethnic groups. The school is a sustainable building and it consists of three classrooms with a round shape, creating a connection with local building traditions. The use of locally pressed earth blocks ensures a natural integration with the environment, just like all surrounding villages that merge into the landscape. The hydraulically 14

compressed earth blocks (HCEB) are produced with the ground on the site, which greatly reduces production costs and environmental degradation. They are not only sustainable but also much better than traditional clay buildings, resistant to the climate of both the hot sun and the heavy rainfall. The created indoor climate is also considerably cooler, a perfect environment for the children to learn.

Social housing for growing cities

construction site

Challenges towards a new urban development Bamako, Mali LEVS architecten collaboration: Dennis Meijerink, Rossella Villani 2016 At the request of the Malinese ministry of urban development and housing, LEVS has designed an integral study of social housing. For a site in Bamako, a concept set-up was made comprising 280 living spaces set in the common Africanstyle raster of 10 m x 20 m. Our interpretation of the standard house floor plan, produced with hydraulic compressed earth blocks (HCEB), reveals a rich variety of options, specified in detail at building block-level. Three different typologies

are studied, where incremental growth and future development remain possible. The demand for social housing is high in Mali. For this study-assignment, LEVS was approached for her expertise in HCEB. Compared to the conventional building materials, such as cement blocks, concrete, or the traditional baked clay bricks, HCEB are a cheap, pressure-resistant, and sustainable alternative. The blocks can be fabricated on site with a mobile compression 20

machine designed by the Dutch company Oskam, making use of the soil available. The size, natural quality, and other aspects of the brick influence a building’s dimensions. Within the limits it sets, we have learnt to use the HCEB also as a decorative element in the creation of patterns and reliefs. Our buildings are of an increasingly refined architectural expression, integrating traditional settings in a modern way.

Planning for urban growth

urban planning

Studies of alternative typologies Rosso, Mauritania LEVS architecten collaboration: Rossella Villani 2017

tThe African continent is experiencing the highest rate of urbanization in the world and several African cities already face housing shortages. The UN Habitat estimates that in the next few years, some African cities will be home to as much as 80% of their country’s population. Over 90% of them are not able to access the existing housing market and hence are living in informal

settlements. Affordable housing in Africa is not only a huge issue, but it needs also alternative design. This new typology is characterized by a shaded courtyard, which allows cross-ventilation and collection of rainwater. The ‘infrastructural wall’ is close to the street and it provides the distribution of the water, the electricity and the sani-

24

tation. The house can grow around the courtyard and change together with the people who live there. In fact, there is also a possibility to make space for everyday life in which living and working can be combined. Looking at the living patterns of the dwellers, social amenities such as school, market and open spaces are distributed and integrated into the urban planning.

Awareness of the culture

Dogon Country, Mali Partners Pays-Dogon collaboration: Dimitra Tsagkalidou 2015-2017 Located in the centre of the Mali, on the southern border of the Sahara, the Dogon country has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1989. It was inscribed as a cultural and natural site on the basis of criteria V and VII, and is one of the largest mixed sites inscribed in the World Heritage List of UNESCO. It extends over 4,000 km² and, as such, is an area where around 500.000 people are living in 289 villages. The unique earthen architecture shows the

traces of a deep rooting of the population in its territory and a harmonious integration of human settlements into the landscape. In the Dogon Country, earth architecture combines successfully the use of available building materials and traditional construction techniques. A significant number of archaeological sites and traditional buildings can be found. However, the lack of maintenance, vandalism or harsh weather conditions have caused important damage to 28

these structures. The restoration project aims not only to protect this historical and cultural heritage, but also to preserve traditional construction techniques that can be transferred to young generation to achieve a long-term preservation of the heritage. Through training and awareness program, the cohesion and identity of the local community is also enhanced.

The World Elephant Centre

view of the building immersed into the landscape

Elephants threatened by extinction Karatu, Tanzania Master thesis | TU Delft 2014

The World Elephant Center is a project in response to the current unprecedented crisis of the environment, ecological, economic, and cultural-social. It focuses on the case of African elephants as a species threatened by extinction, on the local communities oppressed by extreme poverty finding as a source of income destructive poaching, as well as on the ignorance of the problem by most people in the world. Thus, the design solution is a social-cultural-

natural center that attempts: 1.to provide an ecological niche to protect and provide for elephants, especially young orphans, 2.to offer employment for local people who will be serving the center, 3.to support a tourist-learning center where people attracted from all over the world will have the opportunity to come in contact with the animals in their natural surroundings, learning to love and live with them. In the same spirit of sustainability, the design 36

while addressing global issues responds to regional needs and aspirations, driven by the potential of regional precedents. The design is characterized by scattered buildings disposed around a central community space. Following precedents of central African villages, it dissolves the boundaries between inside and outside suggesting the ecological-cultural unity between nature and human-made structure.

The buildings are made of interlocking stabilized soil blocks (ISSB), while the roof, covered by corrugated iron sheets, is supported by wooden pools and steel trusses, made out of locally available steel components. 41

Hands-on experience in building with bamboo and earthen techniques Latin America Ecuador and PerĂš October 2017 - April 2018

Practical training is a great opportunity not only to enrich and strengthen my theoretical knowledge, but also to share my passion for earthen and bamboo techniques. What I’m interested as a designer is improving the craft of design and construction not as independent disciplines, but in relationship with the social, economic and ecological aspects of architecture

within the design project. Traditional architecture has always been an inspiration in the attempt to combine contemporary solutions with the use of local materials and their response to the climate. The need to transfer know-how techniques to the young generations through practice was never more urgent as it is today. By experimenting with the length and joints of 42

bamboo, the nature of different fibers, the quality and composition of the soil and the changes in water content, it is possible to understand how all these parameters can influence the design and construction. Learning by doing, explore and experiment is the way to gain applicationorientated knowledge in building with these techniques.

Graphic design, photography, presentation and exhibition 2015 - 2017

My work has been characterized by a researchdriven approach, and generally includes methods that have gone beyond the boundaries of our profession, using tools of graphic design, art and photography to produce several well received reports. In 2015 I took part in the organization of the exhibition ‘Two worlds, one thought’, in which LEVS architecten mirrors their work in

the Netherlands and in Mali. I also prepared and organized materials to be published in architectural magazines and website. In 2016 I designed the cover and the visual organization of the book ‘Times of Creative Destruction. Shaping Buildings and Cities in the late C20th’ authored by Liane Lefaivre and Alexander Tzonis, published by Routledge, London.

44

From 2015-2017 I curated for the foundation Partners Pays-Dogon the website, the year reports and the newsletters, promoting the integral approach of the foundation and updating the donors and funds. In this period, I also got a chance to do some presentations, sharing my knowledge and in the same time improving my storytelling skills.
