STUDY AND APPLICATION OF LIVING ROOFS AND WALLS: Design of a new green headquarters for the Letaron Company in Dongguan. Dongguan, China

MASTER THESIS DESIGN WORK | OFFICE BUILDING

The final result of this research work is the application of one or more of the technologies analyzed during the research phase (mainly green roofs and walls), for the purpose of designing the new headquarters for the Letraron Company in Dongguan. In December 2017, the company purchased a formally abandoned piece of industrial land in the city of Hengli town in Dongguan, Guangdong. Since the location lends itself perfectly, from an ecological and climatic point of view, to the intent of this research the researcher has developed a project proposal for the creation of an eco-compatible and sustainable campus, with functions such as offices, research, communication, showroom, library, canteen and cafe. The idea of the project stems from the main desire to develop a unique building capable of giving a good image of headquarters for the company.

This building, as a consequence of the climatic analysis and the geographical position of the site, took on a shape that could favor the shading of the facades, reducing to the minimum the south exposure, and the creation of shaded areas thanks to the presence of patios and protruding terraces. For the interior, it has been created a large open space that guarantee good lighting and air circulation. Open-space buildings enjoy the ability to illuminate natively (sunlight) all environments, if they have been designed and arranged appropriately. In addition, the unique environment offers the possibility of exchanging air between the north and south fronts (thanks to the different pressure created between hot and cold air) allowing a natural air circulation and allowing to reduce the energy consumption given by the use of climate control system. • Design strategies

The building was designed to accommodate two green roofs, one above the third floor and one on the second terrace, and two vertical wall. Both horizontal green surfaces are light Intensive green system on a flat roof with artificial drainage layer. This choice was made in order to guarantee a good variety of plant species without incurring excessive irrigation or maintenance costs. The ground floor green wall is made with the same technology applied in the intervention on the Quai Branly Museum, made by the French botanist Dr. Patrick Blanc. The vertical system chosen for the facade of the first and second floors is inspired by the ZipGrow vertical farming solution used for the facade of the USA pavilion for Expo 2015.

8H - AN UNDENIABLE RIGHT (MUSA) Urban module for accessible services Pavia, Italy

COMPETITION OPENED BY THE MUNICIPALITY OF PAVIA | URBAN HOUSING

The 8h project was born from the desire to respond to an important deficit in the city of Pavia: the lack of suitable structures to accommodate the homeless during the night. Daytime reception centers and Caritas located throughout the area complain that it is impossible to be able to offer a continuous 24-hour service to people in difficulty: after having assisted them during the day, they are forced not to be able to offer them a place to rest through the night, forcing them to sleep in some corner of the city. This problem is less evident in large urban centers as there are often structures specifically designed to offer accommodation to those people who do not own one or who no longer have the economic and social possibility of affording one. Starting from the evaluation of what are the primary needs of those who found themselves making the street their home, it has been proceeded with the design of an urban module that would provide a warm place to rest, toilets and a space to store personal objects.

For a faster and cheaper realization we have chosen to fit our design in the structure of a container. These, in fact, are made of cor-ten steel which guarantees excellent performance in terms of resistance to stress and corrosion caused by atmospheric agents (since they are designed to withstand long sea crossings). In addition, in order to guarantee the safety and healthiness of the products transported, the law obliges their disposal after 10 years of use, but at this point of their life the containers are still intact and perfectly operational and therefore easily recyclable. Using a structure with standard sizes (container ISO 244 x 259 x 610 cm) the module is easily transportable and, once the chosen location has been reached, it can be positioned without difficulty in the chosen green area. The stability of the module is then guaranteed by the self-leveling metal feet placed on the base.

EXODUS MI Voluntary prisoners in Porta Genova Milan, Italy

ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION COURSE | URBAN DEVELOPMENT | UTOPIA

This work is based on the development and application to the city of Milan of a utopian project, in our case the Rem Koolhaas Exodus project. Exodus proposes a walled city in a long strip, with tall barriers that cut through London’s urban fabric an intervention designed to create a new urban culture invigorated by architectural innovation and political subversion. “Division, isolation, inequality, aggression, destruction, all the negative aspects of the Wall, could be the ingredients of a new phenomenon: architectural warfare against undesirable conditions.”

Main architectural theme: - Berlin Wall structure - The Skyscreaper as a landmark - Rigid programmatic division - Constructivism theory

18

“The inhabitants of this architecture, those strong enough to love it, would become its Voluntary Prisoners, ecstatic in the freedom of their architectural confines.

NEW IDENTITY FOR PORTA NUOVA Reuse project of the old town gate Verona, Italy

ARCHITECTURAL REUSE COURSE | REUSE OF A BUILDING

This work presents itself as a competition of ideas for the reuse and redevelopment of Porta Nuova in Verona. After the architectural survey and the proposed restoration of the gate, students are asked to refunctionalize the structure according to the needs of the area. The intent in the specific case is to reconstruct the historical cover from the early 1800 of the ancient gate with modern materials (electro-welded net in galvanized steel wire) and refunctionalize the interior to constitute a tourist information and sorting point.
