“WHAT IF HUMANS..?” Alien Church Set “Shallow”
“What if humans..?” Tasked with creating a dialogue Stop-Motion animation for my 2nd Year University module, I decided to create “What If Humans..?”. Inspired by Aardman’s “Creature Comforts” animations, the product I created is a conversation between two flowers. The original conversation is between two of my friends and fellow animators, Kerrie Binks and Alice Stockting (conversations like this are in fact, common between them). I decided to turn the two of them into puppets of flowers, as they photosynthesise and it fit the topic of the conversation. The process began with dope sheeting the audio for the lip-sync and storyboarding. Once the puppets were made, the animation was shot on a blue screen. Chroma keying in After Effects was used to add a background to the animation.
Above and to the left, you can see my production storyboard. Below, are some of the many pages of dope sheeting I made for the lip syncing animation.
As a part of the module, we were required to make a production schedule for the animation - which is seen above. On the opposite page you can see the character designs for the puppets used in the animation - they are relatively simple in design, however they did not need to be complex. Alien church set As a part of the 3D Stop Motion Project Module, I was to create a stop-motion set in the them of space. I chose to create an alien church. The set included papercraft stained-glass windows depicting various aliens; an altar table made out of foam and air-drying clay that has been carved and painted to look like marble; and a small gold goblet filled with red liquid latex.
Moodboards that were the inspiration for the set - I love the aesthetic of churches and stained glass windows and have always been fascinated by sci-fi and aliens.
“Shallow” For the full production blog for this project follow this link: https://preproductionprojectblog. wordpress.com/ “Shallow” is the result of a Pre-Production module, where we were to create a PreProduction package for an animation including: character desings, storyboarding, written treatments, animatic, moodboards and a short test animation. Abstract Treatment: Ignorance. Attachment. Clarity. Short Treatment: They grow close. The ignored truth is revealed and it all becomes clear. The story is about a self-absorbed dryad who lives alone in the middle of a lake, who one day meets a mermaid.
Contrasting (left) and Primary (right) moodboards.
Character design for the Dryad - Dana. I wanted a rather simple design for her, as I was aiming for a 2D frame by frame animation. I also wanted a contrast between her design and the mermaid’s. Whilst the mermaid would be kept in the blue tones like the lake water, Dana would have the warm colours of autumn and the scenery surrounding her.
Designs for the mermaid - Viv. I wanted to keep her blue toned for a contrast between the characters, but also for something in her colour scheme to unify her with Dana’s world.
