POINT / LINE / PLANE

This module was an exploration of fundamental elements which are combined to create complex geometries and to push architectural boundaries. My design was an exploration of creating sub-spaces wtihin the design through the combination of point, line and plane. The structure was also a play on versatility, the entire sculptural like design was created to facilitate it to behave as more than just a traditional building which has walls which stand, and a roof, i wanted the design to have these fundamental elements however to be able to perform other uses whether it be to be climbed or sat on for example. The photos on the left were sketches which were used to communicate and explore point line plane to find the design; finding different ways of connecting, disconnecing and or manipulating point line and plnane elements . The quote below for me summarised point line plane as a module; the evolutionary exploration of fundamental elements which today have no bounds.

“Tectonic which is a becoming a growth in dimensions; in modern architecture: [point, line, plane is communicated through] a (drilled) hole which leads to sheet which leads to component which leads to ? (A, Selenitsch Lecture 1, 2016) 8

1.2 FRAME & INFILL

9

The module of Frame And Infill which was investigated for my work was not just about ‘framing a view’ but framing the way in which we move through the space - traditionally a veritcal exploration, i wanted to create a horizontal experience to which had the views unframed, completly inverting the original concept; i wanted everywhere to be seen, an overwhelming lack of frame which hides or focuses an individual into one sight or idea. The ideology which echoed throughout was ultimately subconcious frames being present. My design as a result doesnt have obvious planes or frames shaping and creating its shape vertically but horizontally has many cause for a different view to be framed subconciously. The quote below for me summarised this area of study as it prompted the ideology i used to create my structure; the temporary and permenant relationship was particularly considered through my opaque material .

“Temporary and permanence works together as a result of the relationship established between the two.” (A, Selenitsch, Lecture 5, 2016) 10

1.3 MASS

11

The final module of Mass which was explored during the semester was a tectonic exploration which focused on the volumetric aspect of architecture and the role that has in the experience as well as the aesthetic. The ideology of communicating through voids or playing with light vs dark was explored heavily through the design process. The Mass module featured more vernacular architecture in reference to the houses in Spain etc which inpisred me to explore further vernacular architecture. The ideology which also drove my design experience was the relationship formed between the individual and the architecture; a place of protection, refuge or solice from an exterior world from the outside.

“buildings which are carved into the rocks to support themselves as well as protect them from natural disasters - work in a big rock “ (A, Selenitsch, Lecture 3, 2016)

12

The final project which was situated on Herring Island was ultimately an exploration of all the modules covered previously emalgimated to create architecture which was able to communicate all of the ideologies, concepts and elements to create a space which was able to communicate these elements whilst also play on the ideology of a pavilion which held a secret. My design was intirely based on the ideology of hidden in plain sight; something large, sculptural (to add to the sculptural island) which is an addition to the site that could be walked past and missed. The entire secret is an ever-evolving one, that being the initial, however it opens and continues further being that theres an entire area which is completly missed by the naked eye. These elements are explored during the next component of the Earth Book.

CONCEPTACLES The conceptacles created below discuss three fundamental elements which were used to inspire the design; the first being a cohesive, single peice appearing design which enveepes itself and is complelty formed through its own elements; secondly, the ability to control movemenet through barriers or informal direction, a fluidity of movement was an important component for my design. Finally, the conceptacle was created with contours of the earth in mind, being able to combine them, and use them not work aainst them with the design was imperitive, with the aim to make the design specific for Herring Island, not merely a design which was generically made and placed on the island.

3.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND DEVELOPMENT

Elements considered during the site analysis was the noise, accessibility and popularity of space and its use;

15

The development component of the design which initially started with sketching the conceptacles ideas in various ways and implementing the concept through it was an interesting exploration. The sketch models on the left were communicating an ever-evolving staircase; the secret being that it would lead to the timecapsule, but the journey would be missleading and seamingly endless; the angled image at the top of the page was about experimenting through different layers of the Earth as well as through different mediums or materials. This is further explored through the Earth Book. Finally, the botom photograph was a prototype of the sketch model which was used to communicate ideas about an ever-evolving secret emerging; the concept of hidden in plain sight was being played with through the frame and infill component and having the varying levels was to create spaces of hierarchy which would play different roles. The sketches to the right were how the triangle shape was found through the ever-evolving square/ cube design whilst maintaining the key principles

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT from the sketches and idea development; a sketch model or prototype of the idea was created; this unscaled design was about combining all the elements of the modules and creating spaces which kids could enjoy, satisfy the criteria, but mostly communicate the ideology of being hidden in plain sight; invisible despite being stood right in front of the individual. The panels and triangles act to pay homage to both frame and infill and point, line and infill, and submerging it partly under the earth was the nod to the Mass module. The pockets of black contrasting with the white was used to develop light needs within as well as around the design. The folded panels and crevices created were also manipulated to create versatility and a design where the top or ‘roof ’ became an entirely different plane being able to be experienced by users.

3.5 FINAL DESIGN MODEL

25

The final design and concept for me truly captured everything I wanted; a place to hide in plain sight, to explore and find other secrets and to also be constantly given different experiences whilst using the pavilion. The model was made at a scale of 1:100, which had the light and darkness explored through the photos, with the model enabling the users to have access to all the spaces and to maximise the pavilion use by also being able to take advantage of the sculptural ideology which drove its initial design.

4.0 REFLECTION This semesters exploration and understanding of the modules and finally, implementing them into our own design has been an a fascinating experience; learning about fundamental and crucial elements which make up architecture, seeing them and using them and being able to understand them and their application or versatility was very interesting. Learning about the way in which these elements communicate and symbolise various ideologies was truly an enjoyable component of the course. My model making skills have definetely improved since the beginning of the semester and being able to explore various materials and techniques has been an enjoyable experience. One of the most challenging aspects of the studio’s or semester as a whole was taking the key elements and using them effectively, not extrapilating and piling ideas upon ideas without effect and outcomes which were wanted.Throwing element upon element without thought for the way which they are communicating with themselves and the users was something i enjoyed experimenting with and exploring. Architecture through my understanding of this subject isnt about bombarding users with different compositional elements which do nothing other than create aesthetic intrigue, simplicity is often the most powerful element in architecture and learning about the ways of experimenting with simplicity have been really enjoyable. Ultimately, my design in my opinion could be improved with a skeletal frame connecting the two buildings together made up of triangles; this would not only create a stronger connection between the main pavilion and sub-pavilion but would also create a canopy like connecting skin which could have been a free infilled peice reaching out linking the two fundamental frames. I think however, the design was able to communicate being hidden in plain sight and was able to join together my interpretations of what each module was about. As a result, i think it does well what it should but like anything designed and created, constant changes, tweaks and alterations could be made; our role as designers is to attempt to acheive the unabtainable - perfection; and its this process and constant endless journey which leads to the great work we produce and love to design.
