John Ernst Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. As a young man, Steinbeck spent summers working on ranches and doing other odd jobs before leaving Stanford University in 1925 to pursue a career in writing. In 1935, Steinbeck gained acclaim for the book, Tortilla Flat. This was a turning point in his literary career.
