Shona The Musical Choir is an African/Scottish choir based in Edinburgh, presenting original songs from African composer and playwright, Neo Vilakazi, who lives and works in Scotland.

Narrated by comedian John Simmit and featuring ska, rock steady, calypso, gospel, lovers rock, dancehall and Reggae played live by the JA Reggae Band.

Shona, is as Scottish a name as you can find, but is also a tribal name in Africa. In this concert performance the voices of Africa and Scotland blend in the richest of harmonies, with an eclectic western twist, akin to Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Paul Simon’s Graceland album.

The original Delibes score will be referenced and reimagined as part of a new composition by Mikael Karlsson and Michael P. Atkinson, performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. One of classical music’s most creative minds, stellar pianist Alice Sara Ott brings her stunning new project to Aberdeen. Echoes Of Life is her personal reflection on life, built around Chopin’s Preludes Op.28 and interspersed with seven specially selected contemporary works by the likes of György Ligeti, Nino Rota, Chilly Gonzales, Tōru Takemitsu, Arvo Pärt, Francesco Tristano and Ott herself. Ott’s collaboration with architect Hakan Demirel results in a digital video installation accompanying the recital taking the audience on their own journey and creating a wholly original concert experience.

Our venues are all located conveniently in the heart of Aberdeen City, within a few minutes walking distance of city centre bus and train stations. If you are travelling by car, we offer discounted car parking in the Bon Accord Harriet Street car park. Further parking is available at the Denburn and Gallowgate car parks. There is street to seat access for everyone in all of our venues and wheelchair spaces available at the Lemon Tree, in the stalls and the balcony at the Music Hall and in the stalls, dress circle and upper circle at His Majesty’s Theatre – please request at time of booking. An access guide with full details of all of our facilities, including accessible toilets, access hoists and changing facilities, and Mobile Connect technology providing hearing assistance via smartphone, is available on our website at aberdeenperformingarts.com, by email or at our box offices. Guide dogs and hearing dogs are welcome in all of our venues. In our brochure these icons indicate that audio described, captioned, signed and relaxed performances are available for shows.
