CALENDAR GIRLS By Tim Frith

At first glance it should look like your classic WI calendar. Jams, cakes, sewing and all that. Except for one tiny thing… the ladies aren’t naked, they’re nude. Following a sell-out Autumn tour and sensational reviews, Calendar Girls has been the fastest selling tour ever and now it sets out to conquer Aberdeen before it hits London’s West End. A group of extraordinary women, members of a very ordinary Yorkshire WI, spark a global phenomenon by persuading one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference! As interest snowballs, the Calendar Girls find themselves revealing more than they’d ever planned.

BLOOD BROTHERS

‘The greatest musical of the decade’ International Herald Tribune

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary BLOOD BROTHERS tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with tragic consequences. The incredible score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

‘Devastating. A masterpiece. If you haven’t seen it go, if you have, go again’ News of the World

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning BLOOD BROTHERS, which, having opened in 1988 to tremendous acclaim continues to enjoy standing ovations at every devastating performance. No wonder BLOOD BROTHERS is now ‘The musical for all time’.

‘Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall’

Tuesday 14 – Saturday 18 April A Theatre Royal Plymouth and Thelma Holt Production

MEASURE FOR MEASURE

Directed by Jamie Glover Designed by Andrew Edwards Measure for Measure is a story of passion and power, lust and restraint, sin and virtue and finally forgiveness and mercy. After 14 years of lax governance Vienna has become a place where moral and social corruption are rife. The Duke announces that he is to leave on pilgrimage and hands over power to the cold and puritanical Lord Angelo. Angelo immediately embarks on a ruthless mission to restore order and virtue to a city out of control. He condemns Claudio to death and his sister Isabella pleads with Angelo for her brother’s life. Although perhaps one of the least performed of Shakespeare’s plays, Measure for Measure is one his most rich and complex, and explores issues of morality, justice and the abuse of power with bawdy humour, keen intelligence and a relevance to life in Britain today that is extraordinary. Alistair McGowan, one of the country’s most familiar faces, takes on the role of The Duke Vincentio. He is joined by Jason Merrells (Waterloo Road, Cutting It) who plays Angelo.

Come and witness the strength, passion and grace of Scottish Ballet’s dancers

Wednesday 29 April –Saturday 2 May

CARMEN and Cheating, Lying, Stealing Scotland’s award winning national dance company brings two fiery and passionate pieces to the stage this spring. A brand new Carmen, created for Scottish Ballet by one of the most inspiring and influential figures in British dance, Richard Alston, retells the famous story of a hot-blooded gypsy whose wild spirit lures a young officer into an obsessive love when she spurns him for the glamour of a handsome toreador with tragic results. Performed by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra, Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite, skilfully highlights the glories of Bizet’s original score. Continuing with the evening’s themes of control through sexuality and fear of loss, comes Cheating, Lying, Stealing. Made for The Royal Ballet in 1998 by Ashley Page, this virtuoso piece features a sofa engulfed in flames and a distinctive soundtrack played live, on stage, by electro-acoustic ensemble Icebreaker.

Puccini’s TURANDOT The grandness of the colosseum of Rome set against the greatness of ancient China comes together in this spectacular new production from Ellen Kent & Amphitheatre Productions, directed by Ellen Kent with the amphitheatre set designed by London designer Will Bowen. The Terracotta Army gazes down from Will Bowen’s set in this epic production performed by international soloists and the Chisinau National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus. Ellen Kent presents Turandot in celebration of Pavarotti’s life highlighting the unforgettable aria ‘Nessun Dorma’. Ellen Kent was inspired in 1993 to produce her first opera by Pavarotti’s performance at the 1990 World Cup which opened up opera to the masses. Turandot is the story of the cold-hearted princess, who is surrounded by suitors facing death if they fail to answer her riddle correctly; and the one man who can melt the ice in her heart. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Verdi’s AIDA

The splendour of Egypt is set against the grandeur of the Colosseum of Rome in this spectacular new production from Ellen Kent & Amphitheatre Productions. This fully-staged traditional opera is directed by Ellen Kent in an amphitheatre set designed by London based designer Will Bowen. This tragic love story is brought to life in a production set against one of the greatest pieces of music Verdi ever wrote with the well known arias ‘Celeste Aida’, ‘Ritorna Vincitor’ and the great chorus piece the ‘Triumphal March’. This new version of Aida symbolises the powerful religious hold of the priests of Egypt and includes dance sequences based on the ancient temple dancers. Ellen Kent’s direction is influenced by the ancient Greek dramas of Euripides in this new take on Aida. Aida is a story of war, jealousy and revenge, centred around the doomed love of the beautiful Ethiopian slave girl, Aida, and the Egyptian hero, Radames. Aida is a unique mixture of splendid chorus scenes and intimate, lyrical moments which show the Chisinau National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus at their best. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Sung in Italian with English Supertitles David McVicar directs this production, initially created for Strasbourg’s Opéra National du Rhin. Loosely translating as ‘Women are like that’, Così fan tutte is one of Mozart’s most famous collaborations with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte. Set in the bay of Naples in the 18th century, this amusing story of pretence, seduction, disguises and flirtatious alliances centres on two officers who test the faithfulness of their soon-to-be brides. David McVicar directs this production, beautifully capturing the Mediterranean setting with sun-washed imagery and stunning costumes. Tobias Ringborg, Joel Prieto and Ville Rusanen make their UK opera débuts, with Violet Noorduyn, Caitlin Hulcup and Peter Savidge returning. In one sensational evening of outstanding musicianship, Rumours of Fleetwood Mac chart the songs of arguably the world’s first supergroup from their inception in 1967 with Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie through to the critically acclaimed “Rumours” in the seventies with Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham, and then onto their more recent works in the 80s and 90s.

According to a certain Guinness Book of British Hit Singles, throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s, The Hollies had more hit records than The Beatles. The Hollies have been responsible for a remarkably varied and intriguing catalogue of music.
