Dreamboats and Miniskirts
INSPIRED BY THE PHENOMENAL RANGE OF SMASH HIT MULTI MILLION SELLING ALBUMS OF DREAMBOATS AND PETTICOATS
It’s 1963 and the world is changing. Bobby and Laura’s first single Dreamboats and Petticoats went to the top of the charts – but they haven’t been able to repeat that success with any further records. Norman and Sue have settled down to non-marital bliss – and a baby! But Ray and Donna seem blissfully happy… The advent of the Beatles and the Merseyside sound is inspirational. But will it inspire Bobby and Laura to have one more shot at stardom – Norman to “get off the drains” and find that singing voice he has longed for, and Ray to realise his ambition and manage a really top pop act!? All will be revealed in a follow up with the same wit, charm, and great songs as Dreamboats and Petticoats. Many of the songs are from the next period in pop history… Including the Smash Hits... A Picture Of You, All I Have To Do Is Dream, Do You Love Me, Handy Man, It’s In His Kiss, It’s My Party, When Will I Be Loved, Hippy Hippy Shake and many more... Tue - Sat 7.30pm, Thu 2pm, Sat 2.30pm

THE POST
Tuesday 10 - Saturday 14 November
Jesus Christ Superstar Jesus Christ Superstar exploded onto the musical scene in 1971 - stunning audiences and changing the face of musical theatre forever. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus through an extraordinary, groundbreaking score. As compelling today as it was at its inception over forty years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar has some of musical theatre’s most legendary songs from I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Everything’s Alright and Gethsemane through to, of course, Superstar. Leading performer Glenn Carter returns as Jesus, a role he has played in the West End, on Broadway and on film. Musical theatre star Tim Rogers, whose theatre credits include Carousel, Whistle Down the Wind and the title role in Jekyll & Hyde at the Union Theatre plays Judas Iscariot, while X Factor finalist Rachel Adedeji stars as Mary Magdalene direct from the UK and European tour of Thriller Live.

Legally Blonde For our 25th anniversary, Phoenix Theatre is delighted to present the North-east Amateur Premiere of the award-winning musical comedy Legally Blonde. Perennially perky, Elle Woods is a girl who loves to be pampered and shop for the latest all-pink outfits (and matching handbags, of course). But don’t let this seemingly ditsy fashionista fool you, this sorority sister is smarter than she seems and doesn’t take “no” for an answer. So, when her boyfriend dumps her for someone “more serious”, Elle sets out to win him back by putting down the credit card and hitting the books. Ready to revamp her image, Elle goes where no Delta Nu sorority girl has gone before: Harvard Law School! With a fantastic score, the show moves at breakneck speed from the sorority house to the halls of justice, where the daredevil in high heels defends a workout-queen in a murder trial, defying the odds and proving that pink can save the day! Along the way, our heroine (who has the cutest sidekick in the world, her Chihuahua, Bruiser) proves that being yourself and going after what you want never goes out of style. From the awesome opening number, Omigod You Guys, to the fabulous finale, it’s sheer entertainment all the way! Wed - Sat 7.30pm, Sat 2.30pm

Breakfast at Tiffany’s Based on the novel by Truman Capote Adaptor Richard Greenberg Director Nikolai Foster Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the classic tale of Holly Golightly written by Truman Capote and so memorably portrayed by Audrey Hepburn in the iconic 1961 film, is being given a new lease of life as a stage play with music in this sparklingly sophisticated production. Adapted by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony and Olivier Award-winning playwright Richard Greenberg and directed by Nikolai Foster, this tale of vivacious, good-time girl Holly Golightly and her fantastical existence in 1940s New York City, is told through the eyes of a young writer, completely fascinated by this exquisite extrovert who every woman wants to be, and every man wants to be with. With memorable songs from the era, this stylish production is set to capture the hearts of audiences and sparkle like a diamond in a Tiffany’s window. Star casting to be announced.

The Wakeful Chamber Written by: Rebecca Sharp Music composed by: Pippa Murphy A woman’s chronic somniphobia (fear of sleep) leads her to develop an elaborate system of rituals in order to survive the hours of night – measuring time, light, distances, stars – until day breaks and the world around her wakes up. Inspired by the work of Aberdeen’s Royal Astronomer Sir David Gill, alchemy, fantasy and bats, The Wakeful Chamber explores what happens to our sensory perception when familiar routines are under threat. Rambert
The Three Dancers plus other works Rambert presents a triple bill full of passion, drama, worldclass dancing and live music. Love, desire and betrayal are the ingredients of the shocking true story which inspired a Picasso masterpiece. Now Rambert springs the painting from the canvas to the stage, bringing to life the artist’s vivid Cubist imagery and the themes of ecstasy and doom which haunt his work. Choreographed by Didy Veldman, The 3 Dancers features music by leading Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin. Two lovers meet by moonlight in Transfigured Night. Their confrontation is shown from different points of view, revealing their hopes, fears and secrets. Created by two-time Olivieraward winning choreographer Kim Brandstrup, it is a dramatic love story through virtuosic dancing to Schoenberg’s achingly beautiful score. The programme is completed by Frames, an inventive, visually arresting piece by dancemaker Alexander Whitley. 12 performers skilfully manipulate 70 interlocking metal bars, forming shapes, structures and spaces which, quite literally, frame their dancing in a different light.

By Simon Puttock, adapted by Dougie Irvine Way up in the deep blue night sky, a twinkling star hears a little girl’s birthday wish i h . . . she h wishes i h she h could ld ddance with ith th the stars. t Wanting to make this wish come true, the star tells the moon, the moon tells the sun, the sun tells the wind and the rain, and together they dream up a wonderful plan. Carmen Revival of the 1999 co-production with Welsh National Opera. In the sultry heat of Seville, passions are high and drama is around every corner – and a hot-blooded tale of seduction and obsession is about to unfold. When Don José, a young soldier, meets the sensual and highspirited Carmen, thoughts of marrying his childhood sweetheart are driven from his mind. But Don José is not the only one to fall for Carmen’s charms, and when she chooses another man, she sets in motion a shocking and unmissable showdown. Carmen is one of the world’s favourite operas, with good reason. From the Habanera to the rousing Toreador’s Song, Bizet’s brilliant music pulls you right into the action of this passionate love story. With a star-studded cast including 2015 International Opera Award winner Justina Gringyte, one of world’s most talked-about tenors Noah Stewart, and Roland Wood, direct from the drama of 2015’s Il trovatore, this is an unforgettable evening not to be missed. The team behind 2013’s smash hit The Pirates of Penzance returns with another Gilbert & Sullivan comedy classic. The Mikado has decreed that flirting should be punishable by death. But when his son Nanki-Poo falls for the beautiful Yum-Yum, it looks like someone might be heading for the executioner’s block… Packed with anti-Establishment silliness, and full of larger than life characters including self serving politicians that are all too recognisable today, this playful show features some of G&S’s most popular tunes, including Three little maids, Tit-willow and I’ve got a little list. Nicola Benedetti Italy and The Four Seasons Nicola Benedetti returns with a dynamic programme of music inspired by the spirit of Italy. Performing with a first class ensemble of musicians, this concert includes two seminal and cherished works from the classical repertoire - Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence. The evening also includes the British premiere of a new work for violin and cello by the celebrated composer Mark-Anthony Turnage. Described by The Times as a “risk-taking performer”, Nicola has now established herself as one of classical music’s most prominent violinists. She is credited with broadening the appeal of classical music to young and new audiences through her extensive education work and appearances at events such the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony and iTunes Festival. A multiple award winner, Nicola’s latest album Homecoming entered the top 20 pop charts, an unprecedented achievement for a classical violinist. Mahler 10
Brahms’ Symphony No 2
Glazunov Violin Concerto Mahler Symphony No.10 performing version reconstructed by Deryck Cooke James Ehnes violin Donald Runnicles conductor It was the artistic equivalent of the raising of the Titanic. When musicologist Deryck Cooke completed Mahler’s unfinished final symphony, he uncovered a lost masterpiece filled with puzzles and allusions; a work where cries of love and cries of pain finally resolve in music of shattering honesty and heart-breaking beauty. This is music that explores the great questions of life; and as Donald Runnicles guides us to the heart of Mahler’s final musical testament, there’s no more powerful way to open BBC SSO’s Aberdeen season. The songful violin concerto by “Russian Mendelssohn” Alexander Glazunov forms the brightest of contrasts, and with the glorious tone of James Ehnes, it’ll sparkle like new.
Schumann Manfred Overture Schoenberg Piano Concerto Brahms Symphony No 2 Robin Ticciati conductor Lars Vogt piano Arnold Schoenberg was a great admirer of Brahms, although his music is often not given the chance to shine. Lars Vogt and Robin Ticciati will passionately argue the Piano Concerto as a work of tremendous rhythmic and textural variety. The Brahms series continues with the second Symphony. When working on it, Brahms wrote contentedly to a friend “The melodies flow so freely that one must be careful not to tread on them.” Opening the concert is the supreme and energetic Manfred Overture by Brahms’ friend Schumann. It’s the exuberantly happy ending to a concert that begins with Mozart’s joyous twenty-ninth symphony while Ronald Brautigam brings all his brilliance, style and wit to Joseph “Papa” Haydn’s perfectly cut little jewel of a piano concerto. The Goldberg Celebration Three days celebrating the glorious Goldberg Variations. Two startling versions of the work – the original performed on piano by the world’s leading exponent of Bach’s keyboard music, and a feast of music and movement as a top Swedish dance company join forces with one of classical music’s most exciting string ensembles. In addition, there will be talks, masterclasses and workshops themed around this seminal work. It started life as a study for harpsichord; a simple aria, and a set of 30 variations. Today, it’s not only one of the most well-known of Bach’s works – it’s one of the most interpreted. From theories that its structure deliberately mirrors the ascent of the nine spheres of Ptolemaic cosmology, to the claim that the whole thing is a cleverly coded rebuke to a critic who had snubbed the composer, there is clearly something about this sprawling, complex piece which invites interpretation.

“It was a positive sensation. The Canadian pianist is one of the reliably mesmerising musicians of the day!” The Sunday Times Canadian pianist, Angela Hewitt OC OBE, has become one of the foremost pianists of her age and regularly performs in recital and with orchestras across the globe. Following a ten year project to record all of the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach, she is now heralded as today’s leading exponent of that composer’s work, and has won a huge following. The catalogue was described by The Sunday Times as “one of the recorded glories of our age”, and she now brings two of its highlights to the stunning acoustic of the Music Hall. The Goldberg Variations and The Art of Fugue are two of the most significant works of one of the most important and influential composers of all time. “What a pianist. What a performance. Julie Fowlis with Le Vent du Nord Duncan Chisholm with Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys Julie Fowlis’ exquisite voice, her interpretation of Scottish Gaelic culture and ability to bring folk music out of the past and into something contemporary, dynamic and irresistible, are what have made her a genuine and multi-award winning crossover star. Her roots may be firmly in folk music and the Scottish Gaelic culture she grew up in, but her talent and style have brought her into the mainstream. Quebec’s Le Vent du Nord knows how to turn the lost past into intense and beautiful performances that push their roots in striking global directions. The group is blazing a path that connects their Québecois roots to the wider world, in both arrangements and on stage. Julie Fowlis said of the collaboration “I am very much looking forward to this performance with Le Vent Du Nord. We have been friends since we first met on tour in Canada over 10 years ago. This Northern Arc concert affords us an opportunity to collaborate and explore Gaelic and Québécois music and song for this one special performance.”
Duncan Chisholm is one of Scotland’s most recognised and accomplished fiddle players and composers. Born and brought up near Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland, Duncan has spent most of his life developing his unique musical voice. Fiddle playing at its best, Duncan’s feather-light handling of dynamics and ornamentation, allied with his pure-distilled tone, lend his characteristic spine-tingling magic to his music. Blazing hot Michigan roots ensemble Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys rest on the cusp of change, poised at that moment where everything shifts into high gear and time rushes forward. The instruments and the bedrock of the band may come from bluegrass, but the music that Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys present on their new album Ionia can best be described as Americana.

APA’s Associate Artist Programme 2015
TWO OF THE UK’S MOST EXCITING ARTISTS WANT TO WORK WITH YOU! The Associate Artist Programme is a new initiative for APA, inviting artists to work in residence at the Music Hall and The Lemon Tree. The programme seeks to unite local musicians/composers/creatives from different artforms with the aim of nurturing and developing Aberdeen’s creative scene; while also supporting the artists in developing their own practice and creating new work. This year we’ve invited contemporary folk musician and composer Aidan O’Rourke and vocal sculptor Jason Singh to work with us on investigating the idea of CONNECT.
This artists residency is about creating and connecting. Jason and Aidan are here to create music on their own, together and with you. They are looking to build connections across musical genres, ages and experience. To help build new connections and new networks they are looking to work with artists and groups across the city to make new music. At the end we will share what is created in a mini-festival in January across The Lemon Tree and Music Hall.
HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED Are you a musician or composer based in the Aberdeen area? Get in touch, let us know you are interested and we will make sure you are invited to sessions, drop in clinics and other open events. These will be safe, inclusive and welcoming open sessions to experiment, share, learn and most importantly have fun creating together. It doesn’t matter what genre you mostly inhabit or your age or your experience. The only essential ingredient is enthusiasm for making music. You can be actively involved in playing and improvising in the sessions or you can listen, ask questions and take inspiration home. It’s up to you!
DO YOU RUN OR ARE YOU IN A GROUP IN THE CITY? That could be a choir, a jazz group, folk collective, classical ensemble, youth theatre, rap project etc etc. Get in touch and we will try to find a time to come to you for a workshop or masterclass. And we will invite you to a day of creativity before the mini fest in January.
And finally, what if you don’t fall into either of the categories above? You can still make music with us! Jason and Aidan will be posting sounds online for you to remix, refix, add to and share with us. Be part of creating a musical online conversation from wherever you are in the world! Find the sounds on the website http://apaconnect.wordpress.com Or if you would just like to listen, let us know and we’ll make sure you are invited to open sessions where you can participate just by using your ears.
