Thursday 12 & Saturday 14 June 2014 SCOTTISH OPERA PRESENTS PUCCINI’S
Madama Butterfly Classic, timeless and stylish, Sir David McVicar’s Madama Butterfly has been a firm favourite since it was first staged in 2000. Foregoing sentimentality to create a rich cast of characters with unflinchingly human characteristics, his production lays bare a hugely atmospheric, poignant story that still has the power to affect, over a century after it was first performed. Puccini’s sense of theatre is second to none and Butterfly sees him doing what he does best – painting beautifully exotic pictures in sound that are dramatic, often hauntingly lyrical, and full of emotion. Korean soprano Hye-Youn Lee, one of The Independent on Sunday’s ‘Faces to Watch’ in 2013, and Anne Sophie Duprels (Manon 2009) share the role of Butterfly. José Ferrero (Tosca 2012) is Pinkerton. Grieg Piano Concerto
American Classics
Elgar Overture: Cockaigne (In London Town) (c.14') Grieg Piano Concerto (c.30') Shostakovich Symphony No.1 (c.31') Lars Vogt Piano Donald Runnicles Conductor A playfulness and inner glow gives Grieg's youthful Piano Concerto its perennial freshness, and few pianists are better equipped than Lars Vogt to draw out the Concerto's latent poetry. It's followed by one of the most extraordinary explosions of youthful energy in all 20th century music: the teenage Dmitri Shostakovich's brilliant First Symphony. Donald Runnicles reveals both the boy-poet and the raspberry-blowing prankster behind this deliciously deadpan masterpiece.
Barber Adagio for Strings (c.8') Barber Violin Concerto (c.22') Copland Symphony No.3 (c.42') Sarah Chang Violin David Alan Miller Conductor Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings may have begun life in a neglected string quartet, but it's become one of those rare pieces that echo the heartbeat of a nation. On the eve of war, that same blossoming lyricism made Barber's Violin Concerto an instant modern classic, its glorious tunes perfect for the gleaming tone of Sarah Chang. And seven years and a victory later, Aaron Copland saluted a new era in a symphony of blue skies and boundless optimism, crowned by - what else? - a Fanfare for the Common Man.

Ligeti Melodien Haydn Symphony No 73 in D ‘La Chasse’ Dvorak Cello Concerto Robin Ticciati Conductor Steven Isserlis Cello This concert brings together the music of three composers who occupied neighbouring territories in Eastern Europe at different times over the past three centuries - a fascinating timetravelling blend of much-loved masterworks with the perhaps less familiar, but no less brilliant music of Ligeti. But there is a further hidden theme here: the horn. Instrument of postmen and hunters, beloved of misty-eyed Romantics, full-blooded dramatists and sharp-witted avant-gardistes… this concert brings the SCO’s Horn section to the fore.

Scottish Chamber Orchestra Benedetti Plays Mozart Beethoven Overture, Egmont Mozart Violin Concerto No 5 in A ‘Turkish’ Beethoven Symphony No 4 Jérémie Rhorer Conductor Nicola Benedetti Violin Brilliant, tuneful, rhythmic, exotic – that’s what ‘Turkish’ meant to Mozart, and his violin concerto is a joyous showstopper for Scotland’s favourite violinist. Jérémie Rhorer is a formidable conductor who has been building a terrific career in Europe, especially in the opera house. Egmont’s fiery blast will be special – a perfect complement to the softer loveliness of the fourth symphony. Jason Manford
Everybody’s favourite northern comedian, Jason Manford is back with a new tour featuring a wealth of comedy anecdotes, comic mis-understandings and audience banter delivered with Jason’s likeable charm and teasingly intelligent wit. “What Manford does best: classic, chirpychappie stand up” Guardian
Rich Hall
Rich Hall is the star of the critically acclaimed BBC 4 documentaries Rich Hall’s Continental Drifters, Rich Hall’s The Dirty South, How The West Was Lost plus Channel 4’s topical late night show Stand Up For The Week. His renowned grouchy, deadpan style has established him as a master of absurdist irony and king of rapid-fire wit. See this comic genius from Montana discuss a variety of topics all delivered in his own hilarious unique way. Rich has won critical acclaim across the Globe by performing to sell-out audiences each year at the Edinburgh Fringe, sell-out UK tours and at comedy festivals worldwide. “Creeps up on you and ambushes your funny bone like no one else” The Scotsman “Top drawer stuff from a comedian who just seems to get better and better” STV
Sarah Millican The British Comedy Award’s Queen of comedy Sarah Millican is giving up the party scene (Ann Summers), easing off on the drinking (fizzy pop equals wealthy dentists) and is settling down (taking her bra off). Determined to put down some roots, she now has a cat (furry baby) and even a tree (she has a lot of mugs). On this, her third national tour, you will learn what to take on a dirty weekend, the easiest way to blend in, in posh restaurants and how to teach a pensioner to swear. Join her for some hilarious domestic bliss.
Alan Davies
Following the sell out success of his longawaited return to stand up, Alan Davies returns with his highly anticipated follow up show, Little Victories. Much lauded as resident dunderhead on QI or the charming but reticent crime solver Jonathan Creek, Davies virtuosic story-telling and whip-smart funny bones combine to make this a show not to be missed. “Had the audience in stitches…hilarious” ★★★★ The Age "Alan Davies has lost none of his appeal… heart-tugging and deeply funny" Big Issue ★★★★ "One of the best Stand-up comics out there…. packed with deft silliness and shrewd observation" The Guardian

Russell Kane
What is it with us and smallness? We Brits love it - being tiny but fierce, close but distant. This Jedward-haired award-winning twat is the same, and he returns with a new blisteringly big-small show. Watch him ejaculate thoughts about smallness; on keeping things small when life gets big. “A seriously good comedian.” The Times “Russell Kane delivers magic in spades.” The Scotsman “A smart, probing brain lurks below the vertiginous quiff” The Evening Standard
Jimmy Carr Jimmy’s been described as ‘the hardest working man in comedy’. Which, let’s face facts, is not that impressive. It’s like being the ‘Tallest Dwarf’ or the ‘Healthiest Glaswegian’. Really not that big a deal. Funny Business is Jimmy’s brand new stand up show. Come for the witty and incisive musings on the human condition. Multiple choice. Jimmy Carr’s ‘Funny Business’ will be: a) Packed with jokes b) Rude and offensive c) A great night out If you answered a) b) or c) you were right!

HMT Monday 7 Saturday 12 July 2014
Derren Brown: Infamous
The multi-award winning acknowledged master of psychological illusion returns to the stage with his latest one-man show Derren Brown: Infamous. The show promises to demonstrate once again why Derren is one of the world’s most renowned live performers; a dark manipulator of magic and mind control. For Infamous, a more ‘personal’ show, Derren is re-united with his close collaborator and friend actor, writer Andy Nyman. Infamous is Derren’s 6th show since 2003. He has toured every year since then and been watched by an estimated audience of over 2 million people. He has won two prestigious Olivier Awards, for Something Wicked This Way Comes (2006) and Svengali (2012), and confesses that touring is still his favourite thing to do.
