The screenplay was written by Roy Huggins and developed from a serial he wrote for the Saturday Evening Post. The film follows Jane and Alan Palmer who stumble upon a bag of cash on a lonely highway.

Soon after the untimely death of her stepmother (Barbara O’Neil), Diane pursues the handsome Frank Jessup (Robert Mitchum). Before long, Frank starts to succumb to her charms but he quickly suspects that she may have had more to do with her stepmother’s death than she leads him to believe.
