In their 10-year career, Broken Records have toured with the likes of Editors and The National and have also performed at some of the biggest festivals in the world including Glastonbury, SXSW, T in the Park and a main-stage slot at Latitude. SALTFISHFORTY & BASCO

8pm

STEPPING OUT

To the uninitiated, Saltfishforty are Douglas Montgomery (fiddle/ viola) and Brian Cromarty (guitar/mandola/vocals), a duo hailing from Orkney. To those who are familiar with this powerhouse of a partnership, they are quite simply one of the best live acts on the folk scene. With their focus on Orkney music taking in traditional, contemporary and original material, boldly cross-fertilised with influences from Americana to East European folk, plus a high-octane whiff of heavy metal, there is simply no-one else like Saltfishforty.

Saturday 21 April 2018

8pm

HEIDI TALBOT & VÄSEN

STEPPING OUT

Heidi Talbot’s sound revels in the comforting and restorative powers of music, never maudlin or overly dark but gently uplifting, cheering and enlightening. Heidi will be performing tonight with her trio which includes her husband John McCusker on violin, cittern and whistles and Innes White on guitar.

They will be joined for this Northern Arc session by Basco, a fiddle-scraping, box-belting, cittern-smacking folk/roots band with members from Denmark, Sweden and Australia. Their music is complex and varied, from hard hitting, high-speed reels full of rosin dust and sweat, through sweet and melancholy tunes that tell of loves won and lost, of fitful fever-dreams of fractal complexity and fascinating texture, to songs that when you come down to it, are really just about sex.

All three of Väsen are instrumental virtuosos in their own right, and together they form a unique supernatural being. With origins deeply rooted in the forests and rich earth of the Swedish countryside, theirs is a tradition spiced with consummate playing skills. But this is more than just a traditional sound - there’s a playfulness to their music, a joyousness, and a delight in making exciting new arrangements of centuries-old tunes, and new originals inspired by the tradition. Rock, jazz, traditional, and classical influences weave together, making music that’s beautiful but never cloying. With Heidi’s songs of great beauty and exhilarating musicianship from Väsen, we anticipate yet another breathtaking, not to be missed, unique collaboration in our latest Northern Arc session.

FOLK As part of Granite Noir 2018, Aberdeen’s new crime writing festival, supported by an Artist Exchange and inspired by ‘folknoir’, we present a work-in-progress performance of FOLK. When Grace discovers her estranged mother has died, she journeys back to her island home. But the circumstances of her mother’s death unlock a strange new world that challenges everything Grace believes in. Led through a dark journey by a talking crow, a pedantic husband, a rebellious minister and spirited daughter, Grace’s scientific mind is overwhelmed by mythology, religion and spiritualism. FOLK is a contemporary folktale - a story of faith and love – exploring human existence in in our modern world.

Everything I Bought In a Year and How it Made Me Feel A show-and-tell about consumerism and anxiety. Harry’s got a problem. Maybe you do too. He keeps buying things to feel better, but they just make him more miserable. So he started keeping a diary… For a full year, Harry logged every transaction he made at everythingibought.tumblr.com. In painstaking detail, he wrote about how each purchase made him feel – his hopes, dreams, fears, and utter failure to come to a liveable compromise with consumerism. Now he’s sharing what he’s learned in a performance lecture that dissects shopping until it all falls apart. Framed as a presentation of pie charts and bell curves and statistics about consumption, it’s really about being miserable, being afraid, and trying to find a way out.

Following the performance there will be an informal sharing of some of the ideas and thoughts generated through an afternoon workshop on alternative forms of economy hosted in partnership with Creative Carbon Scotland.

What’s the ‘value’ of theatre? What would you offer in exchange for a ticket to Everything I Bought In a Year and How it Made Me Feel? In the spirit of alternative forms of economics you can barter for a ticket to the show on the night. An idea, an object, a service, what’s theatre ‘worth’ to you?

“ Bar running out into the road without your shoes on shouting STOP at the consumer treadmill, I can’t recommend the show highly enough to citizens who seek sanity in a mad, mad world.” – Lucy Neal, Co-Founder of the London International Festival of Theatre.

Wednesday 28 February - Friday 2 March 2018 starts 7pm

Saturday 3 March 2018

In October 1998 in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming, Matthew Shepard, a 21 year old student at the University of Wyoming, was tied to a fence post, severely beaten, robbed, tortured and left, alone, to die. His body -- battered, bloody, barely clinging to life -- was discovered eighteen hours later. The reason for this brutal crime? Matthew Shepard was gay. Five weeks later, Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project conducted more than 200 interviews with people of the town. From these interviews they wrote the play The Laramie Project.

BY ELLIE STEWART. DIRECTED BY PHILIP HOWARD. Inspired by the true story of Martin Guerre, The Return is a gripping play about the mystery of identity and the survival instinct, and asks whether we can ever truly know even those we love the best. Commissioned and premiered by Eden Court, and written by Ellie Stewart, a rising star of Scottish playwriting, The Return is produced by the same creative team behind Eden Court’s Not About Heroes in 2015. £13.20 STUDIO

OFF KILTER

starts 7pm

At work and in his home, Joe Kilter has his daily set routines. Although some people think Joe is obsessive, Joe would prefer not to be thought of at all. When an unexpected event changes his everyday habits Joe’s world is turned askew. His life is no longer his own, he’s off his game… Joe Kilter is most definitely off-kilter. Exploring mental well-being, identity, and those unsettling times when you feel a little bit different from everyone else, Off-Kilter is a darkly comedic visual theatre production, incorporating illusions, masterful physicality and dynamic, non-verbal storytelling. Ramesh Meyyappan‘s award-winning solo performances and collaborations have toured extensively to much critical acclaim, most recently with his production, Butterfly. He is part of the Design Team for new BA Degree for Deaf Actors at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. THE SONG OF THE GOAT

In a perfect suburban setting three neighbours gather for the funeral of a goat, a victim of a heinous crime. A tiny but universal tragedy, played by three comedians and a crazy musician. An acerbic, funny, bitter-sweet tale that questions: is life worth living? Does love really exist? Is revenge a dish better served hot or cold? And how much is the love of a goat really worth? Combining humorous, poetic object theatre and highly-skilled clowning, this tragicomic story describes how a new neighbour with harmless differences can unknowingly shatter fragile surface harmonies which shelter much darker tones, a cautionary tale about the illusory lure of contemporary consumer society… starring a goat. Since 2003 Compagnie à has created brilliantly funny and challenging productions which, behind the humour and play, explore the social and political contexts within which we live through the absurdities and nonsense of everyday life. Song of the Goat has been presented to great acclaim throughout Europe.

A Heart at Sea uses haunting live music to tell the story of a young Boy who bottles up his heart and throws it into the sea. Set to breath-taking visuals centered around a beautifully carved wooden chest that holds the secrets to the story. Intricate puppets are swept through a transforming wooden world as backdrops flip up, pirouette and change, sending the Boy tumbling through danger and discovery. Puppets roam on this unique contraption to recount the story of whales, tiny boats, sea captains and beards.

Age 5+ Using shadow puppetry, table-top puppets, object theatre, dance, music and animation, this new multi-media production tells the story of a lonely boy who discovers companionship and trust through the curiosity of a mischievous star and the devotion of a faithful dog.
