To the uninitiated, Saltfishforty are Douglas Montgomery (fiddle/ viola) and Brian Cromarty (guitar/mandola/vocals), a duo hailing from Orkney. To those who are familiar with this powerhouse of a partnership, they are quite simply one of the best live acts on the folk scene. With their focus on Orkney music taking in traditional, contemporary and original material, boldly cross-fertilised with influences from Americana to East European folk, plus a high-octane whiff of heavy metal, there is simply no-one else like Saltfishforty.
They will be joined for this Northern Arc session by Basco, a fiddle-scraping, box-belting, cittern-smacking folk/roots band with members from Denmark, Sweden and Australia. Their music is complex and varied, from hard hitting, high-speed reels full of rosin dust and sweat, through sweet and melancholy tunes that tell of loves won and lost, of fitful fever-dreams of fractal complexity and fascinating texture, to songs that when you come down to it, are really just about sex.

LEARNING FROM THE FUTURE
A dance performance that wishes to speculate on the future of human bodies in the wake of technological and scientific progress. In the future what will bodies be used for? Will they be necessary? The choreography is built around a collage of images or tableaux, depicting a futuristic female prototype named “Body A” within a science-fiction-like setting in which the body is regarded ambiguously as both organically “alive” but also as a highly sophisticated biological machine of sorts.

Experience the bold, sensual power of Igor Stravinsky’s scores, performed by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra.
Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ice Maiden, The Fairy’s Kiss was first brought to the stage by renowned Scottish choreographer Sir Kenneth MacMillan, adding a dark edge to an already unsettling tale. Now, 25 years after MacMillan’s death, it is recreated with stunning new sets and costumes. The Rite of Spring was widely acclaimed following its 2013 performance at the Edinburgh International Festival. Feel the raw energy of the score – and the anguish of moral conflict, brought to an end through violent sacrifice.

Come to Where I’m From
Since 2010 writers from across the UK have returned to their home towns to pen plays about the places that shaped them. At theatres from Bristol to Belfast, Cardiff to Coventry and Nottingham to Newcastle, these plays have been performed by the playwrights themselves, coming home to tell their tale. Now Come To Where I’m From visits Aberdeen to invite four of the Granite City’s finest playwrights – Lesley Hart, Neil Cargil, Morna Young and Shane Strachen - to join this celebrated nationwide project by performing their own short plays about their home. 130 previous Come To Where I’m From plays are available in audio form, for free, on the App Store.

Engine Room National Theatre of Scotland has launched a new nationwide artist development programme called ENGINE ROOM, which puts their founding ethos – theatre without walls - at the heart of how they engage with artists. Engine Room works with venues across Scotland to build creative spaces where artists from all art-forms and backgrounds can learn, play, develop ideas and meet together. All opportunities are free. This October, National Theatre of Scotland are partnering with The Lemon Tree and other local venues to bring Engine Room to Aberdeen. In recognising the city’s vibrant dance, visual art and music scenes, Engine Room: Aberdeen will have a cross-art form approach and opportunities will be offered any artist interested in exploring theatre or live performance, regardless of the art-form they are currently working in. These opportunities will include moments for artists of different backgrounds to come together and share their practice, to play and explore ideas and techniques. We will also be offering one-on-one focused surgeries and workshops for directors, playwrights and theatre makers. Engine Room is led by Anna Hodgart. Drop her a line if you’ve any questions or (even better - any ideas!) about what might happen at Engine Room : Aberdeen. Anna.Hodgart@nationaltheatrescotland.com Specific dates, times and opportunities will be announced online on National Theatre of Scotland’s website: www.nationaltheatrescotland.com

HOW MUCH?
We’ve printed the whole price of ticket in the brochure, this includes the booking fee (the only extra you’ll have to pay for is postage, but why not print your own at home?) – there could well be discounts for students, children, over 60s or APA Friends – just ask or check online.
DO I SIT OR STAND?
A bit of both – we try and create the right atmosphere for each gig, some will have seats, some won’t – we’ve tried to list it where we can here. If it says ‘doors’ then that’s when the doors open and you get inside for a drink. If it says ‘start’ that’s when the show starts. Some shows have support acts, we can’t always confirm this until nearer the time and ‘start’ can mean the start of the support act, not the main act
HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE?
All ages are welcome, but under 16s must be accompanied by an adult, and under 18s can’t be near the bars.
Aberdeen Performing Arts is a charity registered in Scotland. No: SCO33733
