Scottish Opera Bizet’s Carmen

Georges Bizet’s show-stopping opera of jealousy, lust, and life outside the dictates of society is boldly updated by director John Fulljames (Nixon in China 2020). With one hit melody after another, including the Habanera, Flower Aria and Toreador Song, Carmen has musical riches for all. The story is set amidst the unrest of 1970s Spain, where an investigation into Carmen’s murder unfolds alongside the rollercoaster of events that lead to her death. With an English translation, this is Carmen as you’ve never seen it before!

One of classical music’s most creative minds, stellar pianist Alice Sara Ott brings her stunning new project to Aberdeen.

Echoes Of Life is her personal reflection on life, built around Chopin’s Preludes Op.28 and interspersed with seven specially selected contemporary works by the likes of György Ligeti, Nino Rota, Chilly Gonzales, Tōru Takemitsu, Arvo Pärt, Francesco Tristano and Ott herself.

Ott’s collaboration with architect Hakan Demirel results in a digital video installation accompanying the recital taking the audience on their own journey and creating a wholly original concert experience.

The chronoscope is designed to not only tell the time but also convey how, why and what time really is. As each slither of time bursts into being, it gauges and visualises the exact nature of that particular moment. (It is no wonder that the chronoscope sometimes runs a little slow.)

Luckily, it has a range of tricks inherited from medieval astronomical clocks and its namesakes made by James Cox (1723-1800). Using these, it can express as many individual temporal characters as there are motes of time in the universe.

Silent Chaos

Every human being has become a living set of data and a potential content creator. The Music Hall is now a bespoke information collector, gathering data from the people and the activities occurring there, via a bespoke network of different sensors, and then visualised live. Silent Chaos analyse and decode the world through the use of new technologies. By creating unusual instruments, which can include live plants, to play in their performances, they research and experiment with new media, live video manipulation, sound-driven video and creative coding.
