Tosca Giacomo Puccini - revival of the 1980 production Sung in Italian with English Supertitles. Masterfully conceived by a consummate storyteller, Anthony Besch’s treasured production of Tosca transports Puccini's powerful drama to Fascist Italy in the early 1940s, a setting entirely in tune with the dark intensity of this passionate tale. Rich with the glamour and detail of the period, the impressive staging brings to life the majesty and wonder of the Eternal City – Rome. Floria Tosca is the talk of the town, a famed opera diva with many dazzled admirers. But she only has eyes for one man, Mario Cavaradossi. As his behaviour becomes suspicious, she fears he has another woman. But the truth is far more dangerous. Police Chief Scarpia is obsessed by Tosca, and plans to kill her lover and take her for himself. As Scarpia's schemes unfold, Tosca and Cavaradossi are drawn into a trap from which there is no escape. Puccini’s music, at times heartbreakingly tender, at times powerful and harrowing, captures the sweeping span of this epic story from the exquisite stillness of a silent dawn in Rome, to the raw drama of Tosca’s final, desperate plight. Susannah Glanville, star of Opera North’s 2009 production, returns to the title role. English baritone Robert Poulton is Scarpia, and Spanish tenor José Ferrero sings Cavaradossi. Scottish Opera’s Music Director Francesco Corti conducts.

Educating Rita By Willy Russell Directed by Tamara Harvey A gem of British theatre, Educating Rita is the unforgettable story of the relationship between a feisty Liverpudlian hairdresser and a jaded university professor. Rita has a passion for literature and is intent upon self-improvement. Frank’s disillusionment with life has driven him to the bottle. As Rita grapples with the trials of education, Frank learns to believe in himself again. Originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the show won the 1980 Society of West End Theatres award for Best Comedy and Best Play. Since this time, Educating Rita has never been out of production somewhere in the world. The film version which starred Julie Walters and Michael Caine was Oscar-nominated and won three BAFTA awards. Matthew Kelly is one of the UK’s best-loved actors. Winner of an Olivier Award for Of Mice and Men, and widely acclaimed for his performance in the television drama Cold Blood, his recent stage roles range from the musicals Spamalot and Lend Me A Tenor and Legally Blonde in the West End to Troilus and Cressida at the Globe and Waiting For Godot with Ian McKellen. The Cone Gatherers By Robin Jenkins Adapted by Peter Arnott Directed by Kenny Ireland Designed by Hayden Griffin The Cone Gatherers is a haunting tale of good versus evil, demonstrating the destructive power of envy and prejudice. This classic Scottish novel tells the tale of two brothers gathering cones in a forest on a Scottish estate in order to replenish the trees felled for the war effort. Neil, and his hunchbacked brother Calum, lead happy and contented lives in these beautiful surroundings, completely detached from the destruction of the Second World War. However, their innocence and happiness is threatened by the dark, obsessive hatred of Duror, the gamekeeper and the deep prejudices of the class system of the time. The obsessions of Duror grow stronger, building to a devastating climax. Robin Jenkins’ greatest novel is brought to life by the creative team behind HMT’s two critically-acclaimed productions, Sunset Song and The Silver Darlings, in a brand new adaptation by Scottish dramatist Peter Arnott.

BALCONY
One of the most beautiful theatres in Britain, His Majesty’s Theatre was designed by the legendary theatre architect Frank Matcham with his trademark proscenium arch and pillarless balconies. Since opening in 1906, it has continually attracted a huge range of top quality theatre productions from smash-hit musicals to top class drama and dance. Seating around 1470, the theatre has undergone three major refurbishments in its 100-year history, in the 1930s,1980s and most recently an £8m redevelopment in 2004/5, which successfully added a contemporary aspect to the historic Edwardian building, with new facilities such as the restaurant and cafe, giving Aberdeen a 21st century venue to be proud of.

Vienna Boys’ Choir Arguably the oldest touring boy band in the world, the Vienna Boys’ Choir was founded in the 15th century as part of the Chapel of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. Maximilian, who travelled a lot, liked to have his musicians about, and generations of boys have been on the road ever since. In the last 90 years, the boys have sung in more than 100 countries on almost 1,000 tours. Now after a ten-year absence, they are finally touring the UK again. For their return to the UK, the Vienna Boys’ Choir has devised a very Viennese programme, with music from composers closely linked to the choir’s history, with music by contemporary composers, and with its own arrangements of music by the Strauss family. Lighthearted good music, notoriously difficult to sing, polkas in particular leave not much time for phrasing, and no time for mistakes. Nothing reflects the Viennese mind and spirit quite like polkas and waltzes by Strauss; it is a dancing, whirling mix of melancholy, mawkishness, longing, and fun, with some black humour thrown in for good measure. The choir will also present songs by Billy Joel; Joel’s father moved to Vienna in the 1960s, and Billy Joel chose to write a song about Vienna as a metaphor for the rest of one’s life: Vienna waits for you.
Philharmonia Orchestra Beethoven Overture, Namensfeier Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1 Beethoven Symphony No. 6, Pastoral Esa-Pekka Salonen Conductor Juho Pohjonen Piano The Philharmonia Orchestra, one of the world’s great orchestras, makes a rare visit to Aberdeen with its Principal Conductor, Esa-Pekka Salonen, as part of an international Beethoven series marking the 185th Anniversary of the composer’s death. The concert features the Pastoral symphony. “You ask me where my ideas come from” he once noted, “they come to me in the open air, in the woods whilst walking, in the silence of the night, early in the morning”. With its unambiguously bucolic movement titles, this is the composer’s attempt to set these sounds and scenes in notes on paper.

AT THE LEMON TREE LOUNGE HUE & CRY SATURDAY 13 OCTOBER
Directed by Tommy Smith Edward Kennedy Ellington was a unique contributor to 20th century music. Composer, pianist, band leader – he reached out and touched a worldwide audience in a fashion that may never be equalled. His music was evocative and emotional, richly textured in mood, lyrical simplicity through to dense complexity. There were songs and suites, tone poems and the blues. The Ducal legacy is vast, covering six decades. However, The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra – an ensemble featuring Scotland’s leading jazz musicians – have chosen a variety of pieces spanning Ellington’s output with which to pay their respects. Happy Go Lucky Local, Sepia Panorama, Concerto For Cootie, Overture from the “Nut Cracker Suite”, Sunset & The Mocking Bird and Le Sucrier from “The Queen’s Suite”, Riding on a Blue Note, Mood Indigo, Harlem Air Shaft, Caravan, Rockin’ In Rhythm, Oclupaca from the “Latin American Suite”, Black & Tan Fantasy, Sophisticated Lady, Daybreak Express, Ko Ko, Main Stem, Never No Lament and the five movements from the “Per Gynt Suite” are Ellington as written – the interpretations by the SNJO redefine the timelessness of Ellingtonia.

Located in the heart of the city centre, the Music Hall is Aberdeen’s premier concert hall venue, hosting a wide variety of gigs, performances, shows and events, from classical concerts to contemporary comedy. Since 1882, it has been the heart and soul of community life not just in the city but in the North-east, drawing young and old alike through its famously-pillared front door. An iconic landmark in Union Street, it is a proud example of the work of Aberdeen’s most celebrated architect Archibald Simpson, who designed a building for the citizens of the city which is still serving them faithfully to this day.

Who’s Who
Loud, hairy, and unpredictable, Three Blind Wolves are four young Glaswegians delivering country rock with a razor-sharp edge. Drawing influences from Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival and even Led Zeppelin, the boys have sold out venues across Scotland with their wild stage presence, transfixing harmonies and captivating performance.
Who's Who and their exciting live performances, with Townshend’s leaping and Daltrey’s microphone whirling antics, receive incredible reactions across Europe and beyond. But it’s not just about the theatrics; Who's Who is widely recognised and respected by their musical peers and acknowledged within The Who hierarchy as a band that most interprets the songs of The Who with honesty and integrity.

Simon Yates The Wild Within
Same Faces are a Scottish alternative rock band originating from Aberdeen. Formed by four rock desperados in 2011, Small Faces meld melodic elements with harder sounds to produce a powerful and catchy rock sound. The Lemon Tree show will see the launch of the band's debut EP In It For the Money.
Following his successful Beyond the Void talks in 2008-2009, mountaineer Simon Yates is back on tour this spring with a new talk, The Wild Within. Simon has an insatiable appetite for adventure and exploratory mountaineering. In the last ten years he has led unique expeditions to unclimbed peaks in the Cordillera Darwin in Tierra del Fuego, the Wrangell St-Elias ranges on the Alaskan-Yukon border, and Eastern Greenland. In The Wild Within Simon recounts his experiences of teaming up with mountaineering legends Doug Scott, Andy Parkin and Joe Simpson and his perpetual quest to seek out the world’s few remaining wildernesses.
One look at The Ultimate Eagles’ collective experience, musicality and professionalism, and it’s easy to understand the band's simple yet bold mission statement; to play the Eagles’ music better than anybody, anywhere. Second only to the Eagles themselves.

Savourna Stevenson and the Aberdeen NYCoS Choir
Todd has visited our venues on a number of occasions and is considered one of the finest jazz vocalists in the UK – his interpretations of Frank Sinatra are held in particular esteem.
Savourna Stevenson made her name as an early adopter of folk-jazz-world music hybrids well ahead of the current ubiquity of such fusions but she grew up with classical music and in her recent work has focused on large-scale orchestral and choral pieces. This concert is one of a series in which Stevenson performs with area choirs of the National Youth Choirs of Scotland (NYCoS) offering a multi-faceted snapshot of her work. She will play clarsach and pedal harp in a selection of her own compositions, some stunning French and Spanish repertoire, including Debussy and Granados and, as the centre-piece to the performance, she will accompany the Aberdeen NYCoS Choir in two of her own songs.

An Instinct for Kindness Written and performed by Chris Larner Directed by Hannah Eidinow In November 2010, Chris Larner accompanied his chronically ill ex-wife to Switzerland’s Dignitas clinic. He came home with an empty wheelchair and a story to tell. This moving, bittersweet show reflects on the circumstances, morality and humanity surrounding the journey. In a candid, poignant and sometimes comic performance, Chris explores both the profound personal implications and the wider ethical considerations of the contentious issue of assisted dying. The show premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe 2011, where it won the coveted Scotsman Fringe First Award and was featured on BBC’s Newsnight Review as a highlight of the festival. “A wonderfully subtle and deceptively understated performance. This is story-telling of a very high order.” **** The Times “Chris Larner tells his story simply… with scrupulous, unflinching honesty. This is a show that reminds us that how we die is as important as how we live.” **** The Guardian “Intensely moving, at times overwhelming. Larner relates it all with a clear-eyed, occasionally funny, occasionally horrifying lack of sentimentality.” **** The Independent

Casablanca – The Gin Joint Cut Written and directed by Morag Fullarton
The Man Who Had All The Luck by Arthur Miller
Casablanca: The Gin Joint Cut is a lovingly disrespectful homage to one of the classic films of all time. A ‘superb multitasking cast’ whisk you back to Morocco 1941, a Nazi infested hotbed of corruption, teeming with refugees and all the flotsam and jetsam of war-torn Europe. Cut to Rick’s bar where the émigrés gather, desperate to get hold of the all-elusive exit visa, when who should walk in but the beautiful Ilsa, Rick’s long lost love… Casablanca has some of the most iconic scenes and best lines ever written, so why not play it again? But this time in a tiny gin joint, with three actors. Morag Fullarton’s fast paced distillation will have you raise a Bogart-style eyebrow, shed a Bergman-like tear and drown out the Nazis with a rousing chorus of the Marseillaise. Starring Jimmy Chisholm, Gavin Mitchell and Clare Waugh. Excerpts from Casablanca granted courtesy of Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. “…pure theatre magic…the secret of the show's success lies in its combination of anarchic stage send-up and real passion for the essence of one of the great screen love-stories…” ★★★★ The Scotsman
Is it luck, fate or hard work that brings a man his happiness? The Man Who Had All the Luck follows the life of David Beeves, a mechanic in a rural Midwest American town in the 1930s, who is blessed with good fortune. In contrast, his family and friends face difficult times: his father desperately trying to raise his under-performing brother to success on the baseball pitch, while his friend Shory, confined to a wheelchair, becomes more resentful of his misfortune. The more success David achieves, the more guilty and paranoid he feels about the plight of those around him. He begins to wonder what will happen when his luck runs out.
