Known for ÂŤHollywood of the Middle EastÂť, Egypt - during the years from the 1940s to the 1960s - was actually ranking third largest cinema in the world, after the United States and India. Although, through the drastic decline in the quality of cinema across time came with the changes in the Egyptian social fabric, it was necessary to revive the memory of the golden ages of the Egyptian film industry. That is the main concept of having the Egyptian Film Museum project; to document, archive and collect all related data, as well as present them to the public community. Where is it located? Downtown Cairo, between Attaba and Opera squares. Why the exact location? Downtown has been known as the metropolitan arts and cultural hub of Cairo. It included a number of the very well-known casinos, theatres and of course, cinemas. Not only this, but also was the location where numerous movies were shot. The location was not an easy spot, but indeed an interesting one for a musem. Not only that it connects 2 prominent squares, Attaba and Opera squares, but also is the connection point between 2 very different urban fabrics. The first is the gridded and well-planned Khedival Cairo, while the other is an outcome of the organic sprawl of Old Cairo.

Challenges arise with special building sites; the one we faced was in the chaos surrounding the site. Given the different urban fabrics, the bridge embracing the site and the intensity of the space users and cars, it makes the site very crowded and needs breathing. Therefore, it would have been so irrespective to place a massive block on the only green open spot on the site. This is where the concept came from; dividing the museum into two sections; underground and above ground, connected through a vertical shaft. The cultural section is underground; this is where the cinemas and the exhibition areas are available for viewers. The public section is above ground; this includes the adminstration areas, education classes, library and a restaurant. Whereas 80 % of the ground floor remains open to the public, so they do not feel fenced off, but rather encouraging for them to engage to the activities happening inside. In plan, powerful geometrical shapes take the lead giving the building its form and reflecting the orthogonal planned Khedival Cairo. In contrary, the organic nature of Old Cairo is reflected in the brokenness of the elevations. This dichotomy gives the building its harmony while accomodating the functions of the program.

02| Museum of the 20th Century // design studio | Winter 2015
The location of the museum is part of its significance. The museum lies next to one of the modern masterpieces created by the great Mies Van Der Rohe; the ÂŤNeue NationalegalerieÂť. Therefore, to introduce the Museum of the 20 Century to the site, there has to be a dialogue between the two museums to create harmony while each having its own signature respectively. The approach the team followed while designing was to create a contrast between both museums. The Neue Nationalgalerie is well known by its transparency and openness using only light structured steel and glass; hence, we planted a solid mass of concrete that contrasts its exterior. However, the interior of the museum is more open and fragile, giving the natural light the chance to find its way to the spaces as well as providing the spaces to be visually connected. As the visitors ascend, they can see that the Neue Nationalegalerie is framed through a large window since it is a 20th century art piece itself.

03| Restoration Center
// design-construction studio| Winter 2014
The project aims to help in restoring the monuments of cairo, which explains the choice of the site. The site is placed in a cultural and historical center near Old Cairo, Al-Fustat. The area is known for both, its historical context which includes several monuments from different eras, and the cultural prospect translated in the manifacture of hand-crafted pottery. The concept was to create a building that takes its visitor in a journey of learning of the restoration process, the history of the ruined monuments, conserving history and in reviving culture through a series of indoor and ourdoor events. The center includes an area for workshops, exhibition spaces to exhibit the restored monuments, adminstrative area and education center. The center also embraces a courtyard that provides space where outdoor cultural events can take place. The aim of the project is to communicate between the importance of the historical monuments and the cultural aspects of the site neighbours, and it was achieved by creating a journey through the circulation inside of the building leading eventually to the courtyard.

05| Samira
// self-expression exercise | Winter 2016
Samira is the child deprived from all the privileges of being a child. As much as she wants to play, she is required to work to afford living, She saw 2 kids playing in the street, and instantly she decides to join them. She starts running and playing with a sparkle in her eyes. She even forgot about the pack of tissue paper she was selling. She only has one thing in mind: ÂŤI am a childÂť She has the time of her life for simply spending 2 moments being who she is, but it does not last forever. The kids have a home to go back to, and she has a responsibility to be fulfilled. That day left Samira with 2 worlds. One with the ugly reality she has to endure, and another which becomes her secret world. No one could access it but her. That world is her dreamscape. That world is her heterotopia.

// self-expression exercise | Winter 2016
Real Estate Corporates nowadays are promising better futures and convincing residents that they own happiness. The message received from the marketing campaigns is that people are not living up to their deserved standards if they do not own a place at their gated communities. Through billboards, T.V. advertisements and newspapers, lies are being sold to users with renders with quallities that are not even realised in reality. As architects, it is essential to highlight critically how what people see in advertisements is nothing but luring renders which could be sold without a layer of proper planning beneath. This project is a form of sarcasm on how each real estate company competes with others, claiming that their project is trending most up-to-date while the others are outdated and marketing their own project as a utopia. In reality, the other face of the privacy coin is segregation and isolation which is exagerated in the short video created comparing Al-Rehab gated community to a commute in Egypt›s subway Metro.

07| Learn, Move, PlayGround // design workshop | Spring 2014
LMPG 2 is a 2 weeks workshop aiming at improving courtyards of public primary schools in Cairo through the participation with the school users; children and teachers. It is initialized and organized by the GUC, Architecture and Urban Design Program / baladilab in cooperation with the University of Siegen and UNHCR, fully financed by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the DAAD – the German Academic Exchange Service. During an intensive hands-on workshop, students from Germany and Egypt work together with the children, teachers of the schools and the team, to find out how to translate the dreams of the children in playing elements. Using bricks, concrete, wood and colors we create different spaces to play, move and learn. To watch thevideo: http://vimeo.com/94074909

Mapping Downtown Cairo
// internship | Summer 2015
Cluster 1 month internship has been revolving around mapping the passageways of DownTown cairo with their activities changing between day and night. Mapping included the style of the architecture, the type of shops in the ground floor ranging between national building services, commercial retails and restaurants/cafes. Every week, 2 collegues of mine and I take a block and start visiting its passage ways documenting its features and issues, and by the end of the week we present the material we found. The findings have been in cluded in the issuance of the handbook: “CAIRO DOWNTOWN PASSAGE WAYS”. The project’s link: http://passageways.clustermappinginitiative. org/en/about/cairo-downtown-passageways0-

Alexandria contains some of Egypt’s finest examples of architectural and urban heritage. One of the first cities in Egypt to experience modernization, beginning in the early 19th century, Alexandria’s booming economy, cosmopolitan culture and diverse historical layers have all contributed to a robust Downtown. Over the past few decades, downtown Alexandria has experienced a gradual decay, similar to other major city centers in Egypt. A process of degentrification resulted from the departure of foreign communities around the middle of the 20th century, followed by local upper classes by the 1970s and 1980s. In the past decade, interest in cosmopolitan cultural heritage and architecture landmarks in the European part of Cairo and Alexandria has led to a number of initiatives to safeguard these sites against demolition. This Alexandria mapping project seeks to highlight the city’s rich and living heritage, focusing on three walking tours, of the Manshiya and Downtown districts.

SAINT MARK'S CHURCH An Anglican church built between 1845-54 by the Englishman James Wild, on land given to the British community by Muhammad ‘Ali. The architecture is an eclectic mix of Byzantine and Islamic elements, and is named after the Apostle Mark who was the first to bring Christianity to Egypt.

Al-Misaha Square Rennovation
// CLUSTER Design Proposal | 2017
Al-Misaha square is located at the center of a middle class neighborhood in Dokki between Mohandessin to the north, and Giza to the south. Whilst it was planned in the early 20th Century it only became one of the key residential areas by the middle of the 20th Century, and by the turn of the 21st Century it had suffered a rapid process of densification and transformation, as villas and family houses were replaced by residential high-rises, directly affecting traffic pressure and infrastructure. The neighborhood is now characterized by the presence of several eductaional institutions, including schools and universities, and it is also houses several embassies, consulates and foreign culture centers. Al-Misaha garden is one of the few remaining green parks in the area with a relatively large footprint and is overall well preserved but underused. As part of their plan to relocate from Downtown to the new site in Dokki, where their library is already situated, the Goethe Institut in Cairo is interested in contributing to the local community through a public space intervention promoting more diverse and socially inclusive cultural activities within the existing yet under utilized garden, which their new site overlooks.

Accomodating Children Art Festival encourages their Motor skills, Decision making and Visual learning. It also provides the Child with the feeling of belonging to the space and cultural awareness. During late spring and early summer, flowers bloom, and to encourage the culture of flowers planting, Al Misaha square can take the initiative to host flower festival arranged in an artistic layout. It could also host an awarded competition Wof the best arrangement.

Engaging the society in the process of construction encourages their the sense of personalization and ownership. It also breaks the psychological barriers built for years between locals and the usage of the public spaces. Design-Build workshops also teach the adolescents to learn technical skills as well as develop socials ones. Art workshops seek to enable substantial dialogue between humanities and the arts around questions about creativity and public life. Arts and humanities are products of both intellect and imagination and that both possess the potential to draw people into new ways of being and acting together.

Boursa Art District
// CLUSTER Design Proposal | 2017
As part of CLUSTER›s scope of insterest in passageways, through mapping, studying and rennovation, AlBoursa district showed a great potential of being rennovated and reused to promote public access, cultural exchanges and balanced economiccultural boost. Al Boursa triangle has a very prominent location, embraced between Qasr Al-Nil St., Sabry AbuAlam St. and Sherif Pacha St., which is considered the heart of Downtown Cairo. Given its historical context, Most of the land that makes up the current Borsa district was once the site of the palace and gardens of Moise de Cattaui (1924-1850). Director of the National Bank of Egypt, and founding patron of the Cairo Stock Exchange, he was a prominent member of a large, wealthy Egyptian Jewish family, with the patriarch being Yacoub Cattaui Bey who was the personal banker for Khedive Ismail. At first the Prime Minister, Kamal al-Ganzoury suggested the Bourse be moved to a new location in the Moqattam hills, however the stock exchange committee led by Sameh alTorgoman rejected this. He offered to not just renovate the old exchange but the entire surrounding area, which was the triangle bounded by Sherif, Qasr el-Nil, and Bassiouni Streets, more or less following the boundaries of the original Palais Cattaui. All the facades of the buildings were restored, the streets blocked to traffic, palm trees planted and new street lighting installed.

Street Story
// CLUSTER Signage Design | 2018
The National Organization for Urban Harmony (NOUH) commissioned CLUSTER to develop a concept design proposal for the Downtown street signage project. The project aims to highlight how the streets, together with the urban fabric of Downtown Cairo, have evolved as layers of political and economic changes have taken place over the last century. The first phase of the project included Al-Bursa block, AlShawarbi Street and Al-Alfi Bey Street. The design included the name of the street, a rendering of a prominent building from each, and stories reciting the significant changes that the streets have witnessed, along with a map of Downtown Cairo with the area of the streets highlighted.

Palais Cattaui
Julius Franz Pasha designed the palace, which featured a large garden with a series of ponds. It was demolished in 1927 to make way for the Sidnaoui building on Talaat Harb square, the Shell Oil Building and the current Stock Exchange, both on al-Sharifayn Street.
The Cairo Bourse
The Cairo Bourse moved from its old location on Bursa al-Gadida St. to its current location in 1928. It was designed by the French architect Georges Parq in an Art Deco/Neo Classical style. Closed in 1961 during Nasser's Socialist period, it did not reopen until 1996. At that time the building needed extensive renovation as the basement area was flooded, and refurbished with the latest technology. Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri suggested the Bourse be moved to the Muqattam hills, however the Stock Exchange committee led by Sameh al-Torgoman rejected this, and instead offered to renovate the Exchange as well as the entire Bursa area. All the facades of the buildings were restored, the streets pedestrianized and landscaped, and new street lighting installed.

A street Story
AL-ALFI BEY STREET Al-Alfi Bey Street takes its name from Mohamed Bey al-Alfi, a Mamluk leader of Egypt. As he was purchased as a Mamluk slave for 1,000 gold coins, he took the name al-Alfi. His palace, located on the edge of Azbakiya Lake, (today’s Azbakiya Garden), was occupied and used as Napoleon’s residence and headquarters after the invasion of the French in 1798.

By the 1830s Azbakiya Lake had been filled in to form a park, and Alfi Bey’s palace replaced by the Kamel Pacha palace. By 1875, during the reign of Khedive Tawfiq, the development of the Tawfiqiya area had begun and the streets laid out with al-Alfi Bey street cut through the gardens of the old palace. Initially called Rue De Progress, then Boulevard Halim, it gained its present name after 1910. By the 1920s, Alfi Bey and adjoining ‘Imad al-Din Streets had become the center of the ‘Broadway of the East’ as theaters, cabarets and cinemas proliferated.

However, by the 1980s, downtown was in decline. In 1996 the street was pedestrianized in an attempt to revive the former glory of Alfi Bey. A 2015 renovation improved the pedestrian passage, providing upgraded ground paving, landscaping, street lighting and café seating zones.

Baron de Gleon (1899-1843), a French aristocrat, built this palace in 1872. Designed by Ambroise Baudry in the Neo-Islamic style, it contained a Salamlik as the main house, and a Haramlik (since demolished), as free lodging for the early Orientalist artists. Al-Shawarbi bought the villa in 1883, and the house later became the Italian Embassy. The villa is one of the few remaining examples of Khedive Isma‘il’s initial Isma‘iliya quarter, whereby anyone with 30,000 francs and the ability to develop the property within 18 months was given the land for free.

Al-Shawarbi: transformation and revitalization In the late 1970s, when Egypt was transforming from a state-led economy to an open market (al-Infitah), al-Shawarbi was the only place in Egypt where imported clothes and accessories could be purchased. It remained an icon for quality, imported goods until the end of 1980s, when the street began to decline in popularity. In the mid1990-s, al-Shawarbi Street was turned into a pedestrian pathway, which led to a decline in traffic and consequently to its decline as a commercial center. A renovation in 2016 saw the passage resurfaced, lampposts and benches installed, and trees planted, giving the street a new lease on life.

05| Objects in Mirror are Closer than they Appear // CLUSTER animation ‹Formal-Informal Interface› | 2018
As part of a study by CLUSTER and funded by AURI (African Urban Research Initiative) called Formal-Informal Interface, «Objects in Mirror are Closer than they Appear» depicts in the typical daily commute from the informal periphery to the formal city, common soundscapes and landscapes exist. The transition from the informal to the formal is marked by common elements throughout the commute, such as the presence of street vendors, informal fruit and vegetable stands, or vendors in the metro. It also highlights that informal practices do exist with the heart of the formal city, emphasizing a continuity rather than rupture. This animation seeks to illustrate the interface connecting formal and informal areas, and challenge the perceived distinction, let alone divide, between one area and the other, showing how they are both interconnected.

Transport for Cairo worked on a project in which they can transfer their knowledge of mapping and data collection to a new city. Kampala provided a place where transportation could be studied, so the team travelled to kampala and recruited ugandan people to map the transportation and the data was collected through mobile phones. Later, the data was acquired through GIS, filtered to minimize the lines, divided between taxis ‚Ugandan microbusses› and busses. A final layer of filteration was to separate the intracity lines (modes that transport within Central Kampala) and intercity lines (modes that reach Greater Kampala).
