EGYPTIAN FILM MUSEUM

The Location of the project is infront of Attaba Square behind the Al Opera Garage Building. This is a very special location for it connects Al Attaba Square to Al opera square. Not only this but also, connects the Gridded and Planned Downtown Cairo to The organic Old Cairo. What adds importance to the site is that this is considered one of the main transportation hubs in Cairo thanks to Al Azhar Bridge, Al Azhar Tunnel, the metro stations and the bus stations there. Since downtown is known by its cinemas, the egyptian film museum in this site corresponds with the history of culture in the area and defines the unused space.

In Solid and Void map, the site looks undefined and empty; however, in reality, the situation is intense, crowded and out of control with the bridge embracing the site and people and cars going here and there. Consequently, a massive block is just placed over there would be totally inconsiderate of the site. That’s why the concept went with splitting my building into 2 parts: 1 underground: which holds the cultural contents (cinema and exhibition areas) 1 above ground: which holds the public, the education and the adminstration areas. Where as 80% of the ground floor area is open to the public, so that they don’t feel like the area was raped from them, but rather became open to them. As mentioned, The building consists of 2 parts. One above ground and one underground. There’s a circular void which connects both parts vertically; not in a physical manner but rather in a negative manner. The form evolved in plan using pure forms which represent the purity and the beauty of cinema during the golden age (1940’s - 1960’s); however in elevation, it’s broken which represents the disturbed image of cinema nowadays.

THE MUSEUM OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

The main special feature of this project site is its location. The new museum proposal is planned to exhibit a wide collection of modern art. It would be complimentary to the neu nationalgalerie by Mies van der Rohe, which is an iconic modern art museum itself. It isn’t easy to design a museum sitting beside an international architectural masterpiece. However, the challenge was to add the wrong, yet fitting puzzle piece, by introducing contrast and harmony.

AL FUSTAT RESTORATION CENTER

Having the site lying on the borders of Coptic Cairo embracing its cathedrals, Babylon fortress and Old cairo ruins proves the necessity to have a restoration center to restore and conserve Cairo’s cultural properties. The restoration center includes 4 workshops, educational center and exhibition space to exhibit the restored pieces. The area is known for both its historical context from different eras as well as the manufacture of handcrafted pottery. Therefore the aim of this project is to communicate between the importance of the ruined monuments and the cultural aspects of the area. This is achieved by the easy circulation of the building and creation of the courtyard that serves the purose of the building. Winter 2014

FOKKIR- SAND AND SILT SPA

The project’s site is considered the most interesting thing about it; for it lies in a nubian village named “Gharb Seheil” across the nile from Aswan. Traditions of Nubians are far more intruiging than their architecture; therefore, Designing in a nubian village doesn’t necessarily mean building domes and vaults, but embracing the culture into the architecture was my main focus. Fokkir-Decorate the bride in nubian language- is interested in creating a path that connects my project to the village through the tradition of having the bride and groom walk through the village and passing by stations of my project while celebrating their wedding night to find their final destination- the nile, and the bride would eventually wash her face and feet. DO IT YOURSELF

Exhibition space for an art piece. The chosen art piece is “Do it yourself” by Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol’s “Do it yourself” series theme was the “paint by numbers” templates for Selbstausmalen modeled for amateur painters. The concept of the exhibition space is derived from the idea of guidelines. These guidelines aren’t necessarily made to force one towards a certain direction. but rather using them to achieve different results. In the proposed design, each color is represented by numbered translucent panels, these panels are shifted according to the intended spatial organization and at the very end of the room, the visitor gets a clearer version od the exhibition space and what it is really about. On the right is the real painting by Andy Warhol. Winter 2015

SAMIRA

Samira is the child deprived from being a child. As much as she wants to play, she’s required to work to afford living. She saw 2 kids playing, and instantly she decided to join them. She started running and playing with a sparkle in her eyes. She even forgot about the packet of tissue paper she was supposed to sell, all what she had in mind was that she was a child. She had a great time, but the kids couldn’t stay there forever, nor could she. They went back home, and so did she. That day left Samira with 2 worlds. One with the ugly reality she has to endure, the other one is her secret world. No one could access it but her. That world is her dreamscape, That world is her heterotopia. Winter 2016

BILL BOARDS

Real Estate Corporates nowadays are promising better futures and convince residents that they’re not living up to their standards if they’re not living in their designed homes through media. Billboards, T.V. advertisements and through newspapers, they try to sell lies to the users through renders that are not even related to the real life situation which makes it unreliable. As architects, it is our role to stand in critical, self-explanatory positions in society. This project is a form of sarcasm on how each year, a real estate corporate tries to fade the attention from the competitve projects and market for their own new project in a new utopic sense.

LEARN MOVE PLAYGROUND 2 LMPG 2 is a 2 weeks workshop aiming at improving courtyards of public primary schools in Cairo through the participation with the school users; children and teachers. It is initialized and organized by the GUC, Architecture and Urban Design Program / baladilab in cooperation with the University of Siegen and UNHCR, fully financed by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the DAAD – the German Academic Exchange Service. During an intensive hands-on workshop, students from Germany and Egypt work together with the children, teachers of the schools and the team, to find out how to translate the dreams of the children in playing elements. Using bricks, concrete, wood and colors we create different spaces to play, move and learn. To watch thevideo: com/94074909 Spring 2014

CLUSTER | INTERNSHIP- MAPPING

Cluster 1 month internship has been revolving around mapping the passageways of DownTown cairo with the activities changing between day and night. Mapping included the style of the architecture, the type of shops in the ground floor ranging between national building services, commercial retails and restaurants/cafes. Every week, 2 collegues of mine and I take a block and start visiting its passage ways documenting its features and issues, and by the end of the week we present the material we found. The findings have been in cluded in the issuance of the handbook: “CAIRO DOWNTOWN PASSAGE WAYS”. CLUSTER | INTERNSHIP- ECOHOUSE

Ecohouse is a project designed by CLUSTER and exhibited in Al Azhar Park in cooperation with the embassy of Denmark. The project aimed at raising the awareness about the range of innovative and affordable eco-friendly design solutions for Egypt’s housing market. It offers a tool for practitioners as well as the general public to understand and access environmental design technologies, and connect with local green initiatives, towards the creation of a more ecologically friendly and more livable city.

CLUSTER -TAKWEEN | WORKSHOP- IZBET KHIRALLA Izbet Khairalla is a 2-days worshop organized by Cluster and Takween initiatives, it is concerned by the poor situation of izbet khairalla’s staircase that connects the upper level residential areas with the lower ones. The issues are related to the user comfort, user safety, environmental soundness and sustainability. The workshop attendees were divided into 3 teams, one is concerned with minimal intervention to improve the existing situation, one is concerned with radical intervention and the last one is concerned with combining the solutions together.
