概念l - FLOATING GARDEN Workshop “DESIGN WITH NATURE” - 2nd International Student Construction Competition, Deyang, China - August 2017 Project done in team
PROJECT DESCRIPTION The aim of this project is to breath in a new contemporary design in a traditional rural context. That is, to make a collision between the old and the new. The existing greenery found on the location is considered as a huge, unused resource which needs to be cultivated, becoming the main characteristic of the future building.
CONCEPT The newly designed building is open towards the southern part, covered in glass, creating beautiful views towards the exterior of the house while creating an intimate space in front. Also, the southerns orientation of the building respects the traditional idea of what is the best orientation, providing light and natural heat throughout the whole year. Moreover, the house is designed to be part of a bigger system, that is, the surrounding neighborhood and also to reactivate a rural tourism, meaning that the users of the house could be a family, but also occasional visitors. Overall, the concept of the house strongly follows the context around it, while opposing and blending with it at the same time through an eco-friendly design which fully respects the nature.

BOO K •
Huaxia Library Competition Studio Cardenas Conscious Design Project done in team
PROJECT DESCRIPTION The prefabricated construction system for BOO K is an elegant modular architecture whose main structure is in laminated bamboo. The advantage of the materials choice and construction method is the rapidity and easy light construction whilst being respectful to the environment. Bamboo makes deeply part of the Chinese culture and laminated bamboo is a reflection of the industrial development of China. BOO K Library gently alters the conformation of already built areas, and carries on a dialogue with the pre-existent, becoming a characteristic sign of the School in relationship with the Town stratification. The project aims to promote the use of innovative and sustainable prefabricated building for public facilities in China’s rural areas.

entrance
BOO K is located inside a garden on the South-West of the School campus, giving a new identity to the actual void spaces. The Library is rotated so the entrance faces the School South entrance becoming more recognizable as being the only building not following the School’s grid. The garden creates entran a cepeaceful environment around BOO K, an adequate micro-climatic space, and favours enjoying the Library both inside and outside. From the interior the garden can be perceived through the book shelves and translucent facade, whereas from the exterior the books are visible as part of the façade’s composition. During night BOO K transforms into a light diffuser element through interaction with the lighting system, a visible symbol of the School as well as a symbol of knowledge. The concept of the building represents a coherent expression of contemporaneous design respecting a budget limit and responding to the requirements linked to the use, the social activity, variability and flexibility of the use of space.

RE LAMBRO M.Sc Urban Planning and Policy Design 1st year - Subject: Urban planning and design studio Project done in team
PROJECT DESCRIPTION This project started as a research concerning the water network in the region of Lombardy and its main focus has been to understand the current situation regarding environmental issues. One of the main problems that this region is facing is flooding which is causing many issues in already urbanized areas. At first the research was more about the situation on a regional territorial scale, specifically the basins of the three main rivers, Olona, Seveso and Lambro. Further on, the main subject of research was the river Lambro, which is nevertheless of a big importance. Starting from the north of Lombardy it flows all the way down through the city of Milan entering the river Po on the south. Considering this, four main ecologies were defined starting from the north: Lake, Lamro Natural, Lambro Urban and Lambro Irrigated, the southern part of the river. The next step was zooming in the Lambro Urban ecology (the part where the river passes through the city of Milan) and defining the specific issues and finding contextual solutions for two of them.

ISSUE: This area is under a big risk of flooding but it is as well one of the very last territories in the Urban Lambro ecology, where the river has its natural aspect kept. There are almost no river bed modifications and the nature and greenery around are almost preserved in their essential character.
ISSUES: The biggest problem in this area is the pedestrian movement flow. On one side of the river there is the residential district of Rubattino whereas on the other site there is an abandoned industrial area which is not accessible because of the presence of a fence. In between where the river Lambro is dividing this two parts there is an existing green park which is not being used as often because of the ugly image from the neglected industrial halls right across.
2. LAMBRO-MARTESANA INTERSECTION AREA
CANAL
ISSUE : This area is as well under one of the biggest risks of being flooded, but aside from the environmental issue, we have as well defined some other issues which are attached to it. That is, the presence of informal settlements which are an actual blockade towards the river banks. People living in this unformal houses are using the river for their own purpose without taking into consideration the level of pollution they are causing. 3. PARK LAMBRO ISSUE: The central area of the Lambro Urban ecology, where the river is passing through the city of Milan, is mostly affected by the risk of flooding, but is nevertheless framing a territory which has an urban character wrapping some of the few parks present alongside the river. One of this parks is Lambro, which is surrounded with mostly residential areas.
5. PARK FORLANINI ISSUE: The main issue aside from the risk of flooding would be that most of the facilities which are on the outskirts of the park and are interacting with the surrounding area are resulting as a blockade for the accessibility and visibility of the park itself. 6. SOUTHERN “PARK OF THE LAMBRO URBAN ECOLOGY ISSUE: The problem of this area is mainly the fragmentation of the territory and diverse land use, as well as the presence of industrial and residential clusters which are defining the surface.
SOCIAL (re)NETWORKING
Before the spread of the city of Milan, the riverbed of Lambro used to aspect back to the river. Therefore we are envisioning a few environm Park, agricultural fields for urban gardening and revitalising an existing
SOCIAL [RE]NETWORKING PARK LAMBRO + RUBATTINO
The SOCIAL [RE]NETWORKING project proposal is defined by two different layers of approach that should supplement one another. The first layer tackles the environmental issue of the river Lambro, whereas the other one is treating the social reasoning about the water as a natural resource and its potentials. Instead of proposing a design that would connect the area of the park Lambro and the Rubattino district, the project is based on the idea of using the existing elements, that is non-profit organizations network, which has been active for some time with social projects within the Lambro Park, the cultural venue in the Lambrate area as well as the potentiality of the abandoned industrial area part of Rubattino and through strengthening this network, raising up the awareness of the environmental nature of the area and creating a sense of belonging and responsibility towards the river.

With this proposal we would like to give that natural mental devices that would naturalise the river body and give more space to its natural flow. Permeable water canal LAMBRO PARK
In order to canalize and therefore control the level of the water, starting from park Lambro we have envisioned a canal that is permeable and is passing through the whole area until Rubattino so that at the end enters again in the river. It is on purpose passing through one of the industrial slabs in Rubattino so it can give another dimension to the future multifunctinal hall hosting exhibitions of any kind as well as other cultural events.

ZIPPING SCALO FARINI M.Sc Urban Planning and Policy Design 1st year - Subject: Urban policy design studio Project done in team
PROJECT DESCRIPTION Scalo Farini is the largest among the seven disused railway yards in the city of Milan as well as the closest one to the city center, which means that the interest for its regeneration is big. This topic has been extensively in the focus of attention and in the recent period there are few projects that have emerged within the architectural scene of Milan. The concept of this project is ‘zipping’ Farini which aims towards creating a new space which will therefore become part and blend in with its surrounding. Positioned in between already vibrant areas, with the presence of temporary activities, it has the predisposition to become a new vibrant and vital neighborhood for the city of Milan, capable to attract not only people from the surroundings but also from the rest of the city.
CONCEPT After extensive analysis both from a broader scale and a more zoomed-in scale, in order to understand the importance of the area within the city of Milan, the main concept is based on what was found to be specific for this area. Throught defining the people’s requirements, five strategic points were defined before the design of the master plan of the area.
SOCIAL HOUSING AND RESIDENTIAL answering to the demand of houses.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Xiongan urban development represents a design challenge which brings upon the question regarding the meaning of working with nature in a complex and sensitive environment: what does it mean to protect the existing natural asset of a site without exceeding in domesticating it? What will represent the standard for landscaped areas in the city of tomorrow? As an answer to that question the landscaoe architecture project ‘Beyond the city’ promotes a deep and thoughtful interpretation of the existing nature, rather than its simple artificialization. The core aim has been conducting a research towards the authentic landscape related to the local tradition. Following that, the final landscape design has therefore been used as a spinal core of the project which mitigated a harmonic relatinship between the existing environment and the newly designed urban fabric.

NATURE AS THE AIR CONDITIONER OF THE CITY
1.
CONCEPT Blue corridors
The main concept of the project for the Xiongan future city is starting with the landscape as a guideline to the built environment and not vice versa. The city is generated by the non-built space, the blue and green infrastructures: the space dedicated to flows and connections, to the public life and its infinite aspects. This is because the blue and green infrastructures offer many opportunities and are great tools for urban planning and policy objectives in the aim of creation of liveable cities of tomorrow. Following this, in the new vision for the Xiongan, five thematic green open spaces construct the core of the project. Even though thematically separated, these five vast green areas full of diverse functions open to public work in harmony one with the other creating perfect conditions for the sustainable living of tomorrow.

An urban forest with the main role of mitigating the northern express way and facilitating the urban cooling effects through canalizing winds from north to south, providing fresh and clean air.
THE CENTRAL AND EAST VALLEY The two valleys are the structural foundation of the entire landscape system of the project connecting the green belt in the north with the bay on the southg. They integrate the openness and the large scale of the riverscape, creating a green frame for the future city. Passing through the built environment, the two valleys incorporate different design languages with a great typological density.

1 Lindian Bay
The Lindian Bay is a vast wetland area that functions as a transition zone from the lake’s natural environment and the built environment of the city; it represents the final stage of the linear wetland cleaning system crossing the city which will host a rich number of birds, water animals and wetland plants, becoming a regional or even national biodiversity hotspot.
