BIENNALE SESSIONS WORKSHOP at La Biennale di Venezia 2014 The installation “SOLVING FUNDAMENTAL” Martina Barborjaková in collaboration with Patrik Kasperkevič & Faculty of Architecture STU in Bratislava ❦ - goodbye to my Alma mater -

1

Faculty of Architecture in Bratislava took the chance and me and previously mentioned team to present installation on Biennale Sessions of prestigious 14th International Architecture Exhibition / la Biennale di Venezia. Our work refers to both Biennale topics / Fundamentals and Absorbing modernity. The installation “Solving Fundamental” took one of the significant buildings of our history as symbol that both simulate treatment of the “fundamental” in our country and the modernity monument that we usually try to erase and forget or neglect. Physical model of scale 1.1000 of Slovak Broadcasting Building / designed in 1967 / behaves as an example of buildings with similar fate we possess in Slovakia and by mapping various series on its surface / as abandonment, blend, demolition, repaint etc. / points out on our wrong perception toward these loathed gems emerged from certain era.

Both mediums / maquette with projection are seemingly independent from each other but however they remain related in combinatory of abstract and sometimes absurd stories that have roots in reality. Installation was exhibited during the 2 hours of the STU Faculty of Architecture´s session in the venue of Arsenale.

Site plan Final project appreciates the freedom of topic´s choice and location. Halfway house I situated to the town I come from / Kremnica - a little historic gem in the middle of Slovakia known for its gold mining history. Not really a house consists of five objects sewed to the contours of forests, in the crease of the world. Originally portrayed as the place to rest, i.e. healing point for travellers to recover, shelter for wanderers along the road to emphasize its temporariness with the reference to the history etc. Current fate and condition of the city whose past gloss is history and now is rather empty and this

typology somehow resemble each other, as if they are both hand in hand, world inside the world in certain sense alone, on the halfway and on their way to expire. Later pronounced as typology of Halfway house, i.e. house that temporarily offers to people - with variety of lifetime queries, getting through difficulties or who are leaving institutional nursery - living with possibility to work and earn and therefore to prepare them for further existence. The similar could be thought as a wish for Kremnica.

Zoomed on a multifunctional space

House simulating temporary life contains accomodating, working, living, healing and interacting elements. In the end - leaving is part of the program together with saying hello / good bye or hide and seek and then leave and start again. Recycling clientela could bring life to part of the city so town takes advantage from house and house from town in the equal manner neglecting the lines of profit or hype. On purpose I tried to avoid the strict articulation of type of clientela and also of the whole project schedule, however I fully realise this is the aim of architecture - to speak clearly, but with rights reserved. Nevertheless the sheen of the final project allowed

me to celebrate anything uncanny, yet unfinished, to emphasize my intents, unhide the poetry in designing and open the discussion.

Tvoj dom je Kino ***

Weekend house for the family living and working in Bratislava, house under the mountains / High Tatras in the almost virgin countryside, on a flat site with 180° view to the panorama. Very first proposal required to be flexibile as the future farm house, to possess winter garden, garage and generous view facade. As the viewing facade faces north, a little bit daring very first proposal was later replaced with more grounded concept developed along with the client´s changing requirements that were the part of the enriching process we are not very familiar with from school projects. We replaced facade with big windows, garage with place to store and erased winter garden. Aim of the project to me especially was to get a sense of working in reality with the real people and what is it to design a house for real. Site orientated with facing view on the north was great task to deal with and not to kill scenery with ordinary - catalogue - neglectingeverything proposal disposition and how also don´t overestimated it. To this key place we put scenario of everything in a row to dramatically point out to entering visitor on a space called Entrance with big window and the table to the mountains. Facade material of dark grey brick cladding / front tiles - depicts memento to traditional house made of stone / this time without wooden barn and our dream of dark house under the mountains, viewing cabin alike and rub to the white painted interior, where, fundamentally, as in every house you are hidden observer / therefore you can call your house a cinema. Interior plans reflects the number of family members and their decent needs for weekend escape shelter. Strong part of the project was to embrace the teamwork as a necessity in a life of the architect and to have individuality´s mind settled in a positive way. Dealing with desires of the clients felt unexpectably new and responsible. Starting from naive scratch ending with the house, where hopefully everything will work best way in the frame of the possibilities.

Scenography projects for students of Architecture are essential in embracing the magic of teamwork and even if apart from building real buildings are more temporary, process often requires and also there is a

valuable essence of reality preparing for future realisation process of building architecture. Martina Barborjaková, January 2015
