Exhibition Cube Design Studio 1 Oct. 2014-Feb 2015 Semester 1_Year 1 Simona Gabrielli simona.gabrielli@polimi.it
The objective of the project was to carve a habitative space from a 5mx5mx5m cube following 8 steps, each associate with one fundamental aspect of an architectural project, such as spatial composition, vertical distribution and relationship between interior and exterior. In this project, the cube is a space for exhibitions or performances inspired by the principles of a classical roman or greek theatre: a central stage at the lowest level and increasingly higher steps from which to observe the performance. This concept sparked the idea to deconstruct and explode the initial cube. The project is composed of a central space where the exhibition or performance would take place and four perimetral spaces placed at increasingly higher levels from which to observe what happens in the centre.

Tangram Studio is conceived as a space where studying can be both an individual activity as well as a group one, whithin the patio space of the Architecture building on the Politecnico Campus. Panels are arranged so that spaces for group discussions and meetings face the patio but at the same time screen the individual spaces from it. This purpose is served by complete with two types of wooden blocks that can serve both as seats and as tables. The elements of Tangram Studio are light and easily moveable. This is so the elements can be rearranged in many

Working Pages
The studio focused on the different aspects of building constructions from foundation work to roofing. In this particular elaboration the theme was the glass facade. The request was to elaborate working pages on the different typologies of glass facades, research a paractical example and apply it to a given structure. The research was based on the double glass facade of “The Crystal in Copenhagen, by Hammer Lassen Architechts (Detail n. 1/2 | 2013). This particular facade, made of two different layers of glass mounted in alluminium frames, adapts to the external climatic conditions to guarantee maxiumum internal comfort. In between the two layers of glass, adjustable shades can screen the light. This reasearch was then adapted to a given existing project and elaborated in a hand-drawn vertical and horizontal section as well as an axiometric section. Drawing contruction details by hand was useful to better understand complex building systems in their spatial proportions and functioning.

The focus of the Studio was the concept of “re-writing”, the idea that architecture can always be re-written, re-used as a palinsest. Therefore we were given the task to “re-write” a completely emptied building whose structure in concrete is the only thing left. The basis of the project, was to re-write the front portion of the building not where the structure still exists, but where, through differences of height, the structure leaves empty spaces. The idea to build on empty spaces, similar to concepts seen in the work of Herzog & De Meuron, sparked the idea to create a vertical park, a new emerging urban theme within the city of Milan. The main element of a park are plants. In this project the plants acquire a symbolic nature, based on the analysis of how they grow through out the year. Only perennial evergreen plants were chosen, so to maintain foliage all year round while blossoming in a particular season and therefore acquiring in that season a specific colour. By this effect the park would change colours throughout the year.

1- Hammock Forest: hommocks are a typical piece of furniture you would finde in summer. On this floor wooden structures hold hammocks where people can sit in the middle of flowered patches. The shape of their structure metaphorically remind the shape of trees. 2 - Fruit greenhouse: a green house populated with small, tropical fruit trees usually associated with southern italian orchards, where people can enjoy a juice bar. 3 - Central tree terrace: la terrazza si colloca al centro del piano, e’ popolata di sedute dalle quali ci si puo’ affacciare alla chioma del grande albero centrale. 4 - Service Elevator: concrete structural element to transport materials for the maintenance of the plants.

Following the theme of how plants change during the year, the building was divided into four floors each representing a season and each hosting a specific recreational activity associated with the season. Each floor also hosts plants that blossom in the correspondent season, cultivated in patches of earth inserted in the spaces between columns and beams of the existing structure. The element that connects all floors is a ramp that passes through the existing structure varying its distance from the beams, creating a transcendent vertical space. The theme of colour is also highlighted by the choice of materials. The flooring of the entire park is made of “Padouk” wood: an essence that originates from Africa and is highly resistant and suitable for exteriors. The wood is also characterised by its strong red colour. The existing structure in concrete would be varnished in green, thus creating a net juxtaposition between two complementary colours: green as the colour of what was re-written and the colour of nature and red, as the colour of the new intervention and the colour of what is artificial. While the theme of the passing of seasons and the way the plants change during the year is of a symbolic nature within the park, on the facade it acquires a purely descriptive meaning. A composition of flower patches covers the facade of the building facing the street and, as time passes, the changing of the colours announces the season. The structural research of the project focused both on the technologies implemented to sustain the plant patches, inspired by the botanic architect Patrick Blanc, and the stratigraphy of the concrete intervention and the furniture.

Each ring of the diagram represents a species of flower and each sector of the circle represents a month of the year. The diagram shows how the specific plant changes throughout the year.
Each of the four floors represents a season and is characterised by plants that blossom in that particular season. The diagram shows which plants grow on the particular floor, and what colours are predominant on that floor.
As each sector of the circle represents a month of the year, this diagram highlights what colours can be seen in those specific months. This is useful to see how the street facade changes as different flowers blossom.

The project focused on revisiting in a contemporary key the traditional greek “Peripteros”, small kiosks dispersed around greek cities, a strong element of greek urban tradition. Since the objective was to revisit greek urban tradition, the project was localised in one of the culturally richest square in Athens: Monastiraki square, a combination of cultural substrates dating from ancient greek architecture to thirties’ rationalism,

the square and of the object itself to a point where it had to be preserved independently from the function of the periptero. Therefore the structure was divided in two parts: a permanent structure in steel that acts as a cover to the second more temporary part that is the actual periptero.

The project was part of the initiative “Riformare Milano” an opportunity for students to requalify abandoned, empty areas of Milan. We chose to work on Via Rovello as it is an area of interesting size, that offers a lot of opportunity, in the centre of Milan and must confront itself with the pre-existing Figini and Pollini “Broletto” tower. The project sought to reprise the milanese “corte” (courtyard), a strong urban theme in the historic centre of Milan with a building for housing and a building for offices. The project revolved around three fundamental points. 1_The entrance to the court, how to connect the city to the inside of the “corte”. 2_The relationship with the Figini and Pollini tower. 3_The nature of the “corte”. The project adopted an introvert attitude towards the city, therefore the street facade was reconstructed, leaving a simple opening in the centre that connects the streets to the Figini and Pollini tower, which is conceded from the outside and must be discovered by entering the courtyard. The courtyard was designed by opposing Figini and Pollini’s intent to build vertically and laying down the tower facade, creating a fith facade for an underground exhibition space. The Design studio required to develop one technical aspect of the project. It was decided to develop the skylights in the courtyard, needed to bring light to the hypogeal space.

The focus of the Studio was to design a scholastic building. One of the possibilities was to design the new architecture faculty building for TU Dresda as part of an international competition “Space for Architects. The project The Student Arena strives to create large collective spaces where students of architecture can interact through the exchange of ideas, a fundamental part of our work. The project is composed as a block that was carved to interact with its surroundings and what we thought an architecture school needed.

On the basis of an urban analysis of the surrounding campus and city, two axes were form of the courtyard, that connects the city to the campus, and a second one that connects the historical engineering building to the open space in front of the auditorium. This second axes was highlighted through a cut in the block that opens the courtyard to the context, and its symmetrical main block that serves as an entrance hall in front of the engineering building. The particularity of this project is the way the collective spaces were designed through the moulding of the courtyard. The block is composed
the courtyard expands, creating external collective spaces. Moreover the distribution of the rooms in the building runs along the perimeter of the courtyard unifying with the external corridors, creating large collective spaces for students to share together. The facade towards the courtyard is a glass facade partitioned by structural elements at regular intervals, whereas the facade towards the context presents regular windows sized proportionately to
