My thesis research analyzes contemporary scenarios of sacred spaces with the intention of defining trends and future visions in this field. Emerges the need for sacred urban spaces that respond to the contemporary demographic changes. Hidden, denied and illegal sacred spaces are the concretization of an emergency caused by the lack of places suitable for prayer and the rituals of new communities established in Europe in recent decades. Interior design is asked to propose design solutions for this new situation in the planning of our cities. The thesis proceeds first by generically defining the concepts of sacredness and sacred spaces, then it goes into the western urban context to define its peculiar characters in relation not only to the worship and sacred spaces present but also in relation to demographic projections. I proceeded to the analysis of eight categories of case studies which have shown an increasing interest in the theme in the field of design and architecture. The project has been realized in six modular structures which can be freely assembled that formally respond to six actions that can be carried out in a sacred space: passing a threshold, make a journey, preach, pray, confront and gather. The structures were designed to be placed in peripheral green areas. Milan was the city I chose for the first implementation experiment: five sacred fences in the park of Villa Litta offer a sacred space to pray, dialogue and confront.

The Master’s Degree Final Synthesis workshop focused on the redevelopment of the Permanente building in Cantù, in northern Italy. The objectives of the redevelopment were to reopen the building to the community and create new services that would make it a point of reference. It was therefore decided to divide the four floors of the structure into some activities aimed at the public and others to a smaller audience. From a bar, theater and permanent design exhibition to a workshop for the exclusive use of the residents of the residence for top floor artists. A totem in the center of the court exposes the results of the work of designers and artists.

In the first part of the Master’s Degree Final Synthesis workshop it was requested as a preliminary exercise to design three cubes (5x5m) for living, working and traveling. It was first of all identified the person for whom the projects were to be elaborated and then to arrive at the concepts that would have guided the design of the cubes.

On the modern scenario of travel s a status symbol and on the background of the social crisis a nomadic lifestyle has reemerged on the borders of legality. At the beginning there is a precise type of travelers, born on the ruins of the great American depression of the early 1900s: the Hobo cross America from coast to coast in search of a brighter future. The maquette is presented as a tunnel with a strong perspective, inside which three partitions have been placed, representing the characteristic containers of the cargo trains. The removable cover of the structure is made like a collage of sheets. The base is entirely covered with strips that represent the typical floor of freight trains, a rough parquet in wood veneers.

TORNAqua is a system of spatial artifacts for orientation and information aimed at relating the neighborhood, the and the inhabitants, not proposing to orient users within the district but to orient it within the system of installations prt of a previous project. The artifacts designed for orientation are placed between the installations (a system of wall and mobile signals), in the installations (signs placed inside the installations) and lastly outside the district (about one kilometer from San Siro). The purpose of the project in addition to the orientation is to communicate the project both on the territory of the district and in the city of Milan. The orientation artifacts are accompanied by an informative one, a temporary pavilion to make the most of a wifi hotspot already present in the neighborhood.

The brief of the workshop was to design of a 54x18-meter pavilion whose location were the Indro Montanelli gardens in via Palestro in Milan. The space should have hosted temporary exhibits, conferences, a reception desk and a bookstore. We decided to use a 3x9 meter module to distribute the spaces. The architecture is born from the overlapping of the module and its distribution on the starting grid.

The brief of the project -which took place in a week of workshop- was to create a free-cost corner for Mammuz, a new group of mothers in the Milanese Dergano/Bovisa district within the event promoted by the Politecnico di Milano “The Saturday of Bovisa”. We have been asked to promote the Mammuz association and to entertain children and adults. It was decided to create a booth consisting of three areas: one for children, one for adults and one for both. For the children’s area we made tables and chairs with recycled material (plywood, fruit crates and cardboard). The adult space has been set up as a living room: we have created a bookcase with wine and fruit boxes and two sofas with pallets. Finally we set up a photoboot to take pictures.
