NOT EVERYTHING IS AS IT SEEMS
Pantomime has always had the capacity to adapt and move with the times, from its roots in Ancient Greece and the commedia dell’arte in 16th Century Italy, to the Victorian-era music halls that made ‘panto’ the seasonal British ritual that exists today. Eventually some of this tradition arrived in the Antipodes, landing on Australia’s colonial shores. I have vague memories of my childhood and the compulsory 1970’s Christmas holiday pantomime fun – the engagement of children yelling “it’s behind you!”, crossdressing stock characters such as the Lead Boy and the Grand Dame, and especially the Harlequinade – the part of the pantomime devoted to trickery and deception, impish magic, and foolish and ridiculous behaviour. These figures cast spells and played tricks on other characters, often disappearing through stage traps and trick doors. The worst was Pantalone, an important but devious principal character found in commedia dell’arte, who had extraordinary greed and status. His full name was Pantalon de’ Bisognosi, Italian for ‘Pantalone of the Needy’.
Pantomime has always been full of moral ambiguity, but mostly it lampooned the fool and championed the good. I wonder whether our innocent child minds understood the lessons in morality we were being given? Were those stories even really meant to guide us? Now, I can’t help but see a topsy-turvy reflection of contemporary life. Much as the fruit and vegetables that used to be hurled onto the panto stage by disgruntled audiences have stopped being seasonal fare and become a cornucopia we can partake in all year round, the lessons taught through pantomime have morphed into a murky, unfathomable and inescapable daily reality for all of us.
Pantalone isn’t just around at Christmas anymore; he’s everywhere, in and out of his disguises, wearing different costumes. He is a fake and a conman. He is only a phone call away. His is now the voice from almost every call centre advising you of a data breach, an unauthorised payment, an accidental repayment. He is the author of scamming text messages from your bank, from Amazon, from Norton, from a toll company that urgently needs to be paid. He is the accountant behind every bogus invoice in your emails.
He is the snake in the grass, the front and back end of the ass.
He is the stagehand, the illusionist. He is the one who can convince us that salt is actually sugar. He is the online lover who seduces us slowly and completely.
He is whip smart and he is everywhere, and not everything is as it seems.
