Your Societies welcome, by amy
Many of the fantastic events taking place during Freshers’ Week are hosted by EUSA’s societies. With over 250 societies at Edinburgh, there’s something for everyone! Getting involved in a society is not only easy, but also the perfect way to meet people, try something new and gain loads of skills to add to your CV. Once you’ve found an activity you’re interested in, and settled in to your society, you might even want to take on a committee position! These positions are elected within your society every year and are open to all students at Edinburgh. EUSA provides fantastic training and support so don’t worry if you’ve never done anything similar before. The positions are an ideal opportunity to get more involved, take on some responsibility and give something back to your favourite group.
societies' fair The Societies’ Fair is one of the most exciting events of Freshers’ Week. It is your first opportunity to get involved in societies and start shaping your free time at university. Every society, from dance to academia, media to volunteering, or campaigning to sport, will be out in force to show off what they do. Come along to browse the stalls, pick up free sweets, and chat to existing members about all their different activities and events they have planned for the year.
get involved throughout the year! If you don’t sign up to a society in Freshers’ Week, don’t worry! There are plenty of opportunities to get involved throughout the year including the Refreshers’ Fair, the Student Festival Week, Charities’ Week and loads more! So get involved in a club or society at EUSA and be a part of what is set to be the most exciting year ever for societies! If you have any questions, please get in touch. Otherwise, have a fantastic Freshers’ Week and I look forward to seeing you all very soon!

Physical and Outdoor Activities Airsoft Society airsoc@hotmail.co.uk Join EU Airsoft Society (AirSoc) for the ultimate in outdoors fun. If you’ve ever played paintball and liked it, you’ll love this. A game of Airsoft involves usually two teams using replica firearms to shoot plastic rounds at each other and, in response to our frequently asked question, no – it doesn’t hurt! For more information, contact us and get involved. Allotment and Permaculture Society michaeldude16@gmail.com Allotment and Permaculture Society is for anyone who has an interest in growing food. We aim to: help students learn by creating an ‘outdoor classroom’ for group education and skills sharing; encourage recycling, composting, permaculture and the development of ‘closed-loop’ systems within the University and local community; and foster and enhance biodiversity through habitat construction and conscientious action. We carry out all our actions and aims in such a way that fulfils the aesthetic requirements of the University and its members. Capoeira Society s0673041@sms.ed.ac.uk Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that possesses a unique style, bringing together power and beauty, and developing mental balance, physical conditioning, and self-defence skills. We run weekly classes for all levels. Dirty Weekenders (Conservationists) sldobbie@yahoo.com Being part of the Dirty Weekends Society involves fun and mud, all in the name of conservation (lots of rhododendron bashing, ditching, path building, etc.), whilst eating fantastic lunches and drinking tea. Our society provides a perfect way
to enjoy the green spaces around Edinburgh, a great chance to meet people, and feel good about taking part in some worthwhile grafting! Both members and non-members are welcome to take part in our weekly projects. Duke of Edinburgh Award eudea@lists.ed.ac.uk The Duke of Edinburgh‘s Award is a challenging programme of activities that provides young people with the opportunity to learn new skills, help others, experience adventure, and gives a great sense of achievement. Many organisations, employers and universities view the award highly. Please visit our website at www.eudea.org.uk for more information. Exmoor Pony Trekking Section exmoorponytrekking@hotmail. com Escape from city life and come trekking in the stunning Pentland Hills with the Exmoor Pony Trekking Society. We run treks every weekend during the semester and have ponies to suit all abilities from beginner to experienced rider. For experienced riders, who want to get more involved, we run a trek leaders course where you can learn more about the ponies, how to lead a safe and enjoyable trek, and basic human and pony first aid. Expedition Society expedsec@googlemail.com Love exploring the world? Join the Expedition Society to meet likeminded people, and learn how to run an expedition or get involved in one. We hold weekly social events where you can meet people, listen to talks of exciting expeditions and trips people have taken, and find out exciting places to go for your next adventure. We also give advice on setting up expeditions, how to get funding, and run training courses so you can be fully prepared to explore the world.
Football Supporters Association d.heaton@hotmail.co.uk If you‘re the sort of person who loves playing, watching and talking about football, the Football Supporters Association is for you. We are hardy football fans, male and female, from different clubs across the world. Our two teams play in the University Intra-Mural League twice a week, have a weekly game of 6-a-side, as well as a regular kick-around, and our social scene includes trips to watch games live and a weekly meet up in the pub to catch a game. Away from football, we also organise pool tournaments, tenpin bowling and Laser Quest. Mystery Tour Society mysterytoursociety@googlemail. com The Mystery Tour Society arrange tours to different locations for the students of Edinburgh University, as well as providing support for class trips and other group mystery tours. Join the adventure, banter and fun! Membership is completely voluntary and we provide members with the opportunity to develop leadership skills and management techniques within a friendly and fun environment. With the Scottish Parliament only ten minutes walk away and an SNP Government, we are in a privileged position to influence student politics here at Edinburgh and all over Scotland. This is a great opportunity to make new friends, discuss issues and get involved in student politics.
