WelcOMe TO The 1sT LEEDS INTERNATIONAL bEER FESTIVAL Leeds is a city known for its rich beer culture - once home of course to the giant Tetley’s Brewery and now with a thriving pub and bar scene that reflects a growing interest in high quality beers and the craft brewing industry. Leeds Town Hall is the perfect venue then to host our first festival and celebrate the innovation and creativity that flows through the craft beer industry here in the UK and internationally. Over 4 days and 6 festival sessions we welcome you to enjoy and savour some of the best UK and international beers in a setting the beer really deserves - the awe inspiring Victoria Hall! Whilst the beer is obviously at the heart of the festival we’ve also got a delicious range of food courtesy of some fabulous local foodie heroes and the main stage in the hall will feature a great line up of live music presented by our partners YaDig? and Jumbo Records. Our aim is to build an event that will grow into a vital and unmissable annual festival - our vision is to offer something new and exciting for all beer lovers. We hope you enjoy the first event - please tell us what you think as this festival is for you. This guide is designed to help you navigate your way around the festival and get the most out of the event. You’ll also be able to find the tasting notes for the beers and ciders available in the beer hall, these are listed by ABV strength and kindly provided by each brewery. Cheers! The Festival Team

There has never been a better time to be into great beer. It’s only natural for any movement to look around at any point and congratulate itself on how far it has come, but beer in the UK really is in a good place right now. As someone who has been involved in the industry for over a decade, it’s exciting to track how things have changed. In 2000, when I started working at the Beer-Ritz shop in Headingley, Belgian beer was making it big, and still seemed relatively exotic. American imports were few and far between – if you wanted to drink the legendary beers that The Beer Hunter Michael Jackson was writing and broadcasting about, you had to go to the source.

Happily, some people did, and amongst all the normal people were that strange breed we know as brewers. It’s something of an irony that the American craft brewing scene, influenced initially by the British ale brewing tradition, has come to dominate the notion of craft beer. But it’s that trans-Atlantic dialogue that has been so influential. American brewers made British-style beers with local American ingredients, which in turn has influenced a new generation of brewers around the world to produce ever-bolder beers with ever-more vibrant new world hops. Of course, there are challenges to be overcome. As we become more interested in beer, we also become aware of more peripheral factors that influence our enjoyment. Freshness is a key factor, which is why many American breweries insist on shipping their beers under refrigeration, and put shorter expiry dates on their beers. Allied to this is the carbon footprint of shipping beers thousands of miles from the point of production. That cuts both ways. If a generation of American brewers weren’t travelling to the UK to drink beer in the 1980s, then they were exposed to the first wave of British imports around that time. While it might not seem terribly glamorous from our craft-centric point of view, if those brown bitters didn’t go west three decades ago, then the hop-monsters wouldn’t be coming east now. We’re in a good place right now. There’s never been a better time to be into beer, and the array of breweries assembled here for the inaugural Leeds International Beer Festival proves that. Whatever you drink today, from the exotica dragged thousands of miles, to the beer that has barely crossed a postcode boundary to be here, you’re in for a real treat. Zak Avery is a director of Beer Paradise, the specialist beer wholesaler, and Beer-Ritz, the specialist beer retailer. In 2008, the British Guild of Beer Writers made him their Beer Writer of The Year. You can visit Beer-Ritz at 14 Weetwood Lane, Headingley, Leeds, LS16 5LX, 0113 2753464, or shop online at www.beerritz.co.uk. For trade enquiries, please visit www.beerparadise.co.uk

Azimuth

5.8%

A classic contemporary IPA that takes much of the hopping regime from all the West Coast American stables with a dash of NZ hops just for a complete New World experience. Citrus, bitter, fruity, peach and just the right balance of syrup sweetness to carry it off. Again, brand new and still in tank so full tasting notes still to be formulated.

The English Experiment

3.5%

Aromatic and wildly hoppy, very pale ale. Huge hop aromas from a medley of traditional and modern hops including tropical fruit flavours from the American Citra hop. Low strength means this ale just slips down, not as bitter as our other pale beers and like a summer in a glass.

Malt - Maris Otter, Caramalt Hops – Citra Yeast - Cal Ale Tropical fruit salad. Smells like a Manali marijuana field. Fruit, fruit and more cattiness. Tropical. Mangoes, peach, lychee juiciness. Also papaya. From the beginning to the middle to the bitter end. Body is full, creamy, and soft.

London Brick Collaboration, Red Rye Ale

7.3%

A heady, fat and bulbous nose, followed by something slightly dank. Mangoes, peach, lychee, and pineapple juiciness, leading to something somewhat sweaty – and a hint of garlic and papaya. Flavour follows the same suit, the malty sweetness enhancing the fruit of the hops. Body is full and creamy, then the rye kicks in, drying things out with a peppery spice. Finish clean and sharp: spice and bitterness.

Imperial Brown Stout (London 1856)

10.0%

Malt – Maris Otter, Amber Brown, Black Hops - Fuggles Yeast – London Ale Yeast A recipe from the Barclay Perkins archive. The Imperial Brown Stouts developed into what became known as the Russian Imperial Stouts, and this particular recipe developed into the Courage RIS, which is most notable because a) it was an excellent beer, and b) it continued to be produced until 1992, as the only surviving link to a certain brewing tradition that was huge in London, and made London famous, for over 200 years. And of course, a tradition which is now dead here. And the beer is black, not brown. Words meant different things in those days. This is not a beast of a beer, despite the abv. It is round and smooth. Gentle. Well behaved. You could introduce it happily to your mother-in-law. All cream and chocolate after the cocoa aroma, then leading to dark fruits, dried fruits, raisin, fig, prune. Even plum. Some sour berries. And the longest finish of herbal bitterness, with hints of lightly roasted coffee.

India Pale Ale - Double SCCANS

10.1%

Malt - Maris Otter, Caramalt, Rye malt Hops – Simcoe, Citra, Columbus, Apollo, Nelson Sauvin Yeast - Cal Ale Big, boozy, sweet, luscious honey and tropical fruit. Tins of peaches, punnets of strawberries. Lychees too, and also papaya. Sweet body, clean and easy. Spice of rye and its heat at the end. Bitterness enough to clean everything up.

4.3%

A lustrous Golden Ale to remind you of sunny days and summer suppin; welcome to the Carnival! Heady aromas of sweet Pine and Tangerine invite you in while a light caramel body gets things started. Quantum American Amber Ale

5.3%

Our take on a classic American style, also our first ever beer. This dry hopped beer has bags of dark crystal malt to give sweetness, which is offset by the addition of a blend of US hops at all points in the boil to give 60 IBUs. The finished product, however, is well balanced and a great homage to the American craft brewers.

US CrAFT bAR Long gone are the days of insipid, offensively tedious American beers. The past twenty years have seen an unprecedented explosion of phenomenal beers, brewed by people who actually care about what they’re doing. The USA’s climate is perfect for growing some of the more extremely-flavoured hops which are certainly well-represented on the festival bar. They’ve laid down the gauntlet for modern UK breweries and, it has to be said, some are more than rising to the challenge. The Festival Bar showcases some of the finest US brews with a wide range of styles from some of the best-respected breweries.

LIVE MUSIC Hedging your beery bets to a line-up that’d appeal to a room full of real ale quaffers could have been a rather daunting task, but to a TOWN HALL full of froth-blowers...Well, we had our work cut out for sure, yet after a heady night of ‘research’ in the North Bar, Sparrow, Friends Of Ham and Whitelocks, with LIBF’s enthusiasm for doing things a little differently ringing in our ears and hoping for some hopsinduced inspiration it came to us.... The obvious connection between the music and beer came from the many memories of raised pint glasses to bands and artists who’d impressively ramped up pub and bar crowds already, who’d already won over tap-rooms and back rooms, who’d turned talking heads in a noisy bar, who’d had people hollering, stomping and clapping along or who’s ballads had left many an impression through many a session....And it happened that many of those artists had their roots cast in new and old Country, Blues and Folk.. Roots music that’s seeped through Pub and Bar culture, still relevant in today’s ‘cultured’ climes...
