Welcome / Contents Welcome to the 2nd Leeds International Beer Festival, a celebration of great beer, food and music set in and around Leeds Town Hall - the city’s most prestigious public building. Over 4 days and 6 festival sessions we invite you to experience and enjoy the huge range of beers on offer - from our own shores and overseas. Many of the brewers themselves are here to serve and talk about their beers so feel free to ask questions and try different beers. As well as the huge beer line up, the festival also features a cider room, some great tasting food (in out purpose built market) and fantastic live music across two stages - the second programmed by our friends from the Beacons Festival. Information regarding the festival site and what’s on can be found on page 7 followed by the beer listings and info about the food and music. Enjoy! leedsbeer.com @leedsbeer

Homebrew Competition
Homebrew judges: Ma John from Kirkstall tt & Erin from North bar, Brewery an Stew & Oyster d Tyler from
Homebrewing is an art form in itself, there is usually a ton of mess, a non understanding spouse and usually kids in the way but we know that homebrewing is where most of our breweries got their start. So we at the Leeds International Beer Festival thought we would announce a challenge, two very talented homebrew groups and get them a brewing for our festival. The concept was simple brew a beer under 6% and use an American, Australian/Zealand and a British Hop to truly make an international brew. In the white corner we have LEEDSHOMEBREWGROUP and in the red corner we have MANCHESTERHOMEBREW judged by a panel of their peers they went to brew at Kirkstall Brewery and Quantum Brewery. Now they get to be judged by you so get to drinking and let us know who wins our first HOMEBREW COMPETITION. The winner gets bragging rights for the year and get to face a new challenger for next years festival. The best bit all proceeds of these beers go to the breweries choice of charity so enjoy them and know that your pennies are going to a great cause. Tyler Kiley Homebrew Competition Coordinator

Editorial from Zak When I wrote the introduction for the programme last year, I said (as I always do) “there’s never been a better time to be a beer drinker”. And that still rings true a year later, with the diversity and quality of beer available in the UK at an all-time high. Not only are UK brewery numbers at record levels (1100 and still growing), but the range of imported beers is increasing all the time. This beery explosion has meant that not only is the choice better for beer drinkers, but finally new drinkers are being recruited to the worthy cause of beer drinking. What makes it a worthy cause? Well, beer is the most diverse, most sociable alcoholic drink there is. As a nation, we’ve forgotten why beer is great, and that it deserves not only a place on our table, but also in our hearts. British brewers are pioneers of the art of brewing, and it was they who sowed the seeds of the American craft brewing movement. Not only does it taste great, but it’s accessible. The current crop of British brewers who are using American hops are making beers that challenge the “I don’t like beer” line that so many people trot out. And as Garrett Oliver, brewmaster of the Brooklyn Brewery, likes to point out, you can buy some of the best beers in the world for a price of a double latte in Starbucks. And given that most of the breweries at the festival are relatively small and independent business, I know who I’d rather give my money to. So, welcome to the festival. Dive in and submerge yourself in a world of flavour, fall in love with each glassful, then go home and tell all of your friends about the new wave of brewing that’s taking the world by storm. The revolution will not be pasteurised! Zak Avery

Beer-Ritz is one of Leeds’ best-kept beery secrets. Tucked away at the top end of Headingley, we're one of the UK's original specialist beer off-licences. Stocking a well-chosen range of around 500 beer (there's wine and spirits too, if that’s your thing), with a particular focus on the UK, there really is something for every palate – delicate golden ales, punchy IPAs, brooding stouts, mouth-puckering sours, you name it, we have something in that style. Plus our shop is staffed by as friendly a collection of beer geeks and booze nerds as you’re ever likely to find.
You like good beer. We sell good beer. Let's join the dots! Visit the shop at 14 Weetwood Lane, Headingly, Leeds LS16 5LX

Proud to Support the Leeds International Beer Festival
Festival Stuff Here are a few things that might help you make the best out of this year's festival:
Festival Money You will need to purchase festival money to buy beers and food at the festival, notes in denominations of 50p/£1/£3/£5/£10 can be bought from three points across the festival site (locations highlighted on the floor plan on the centre pages). You can buy as much as you need during each session and we will refund festival money at the end of each session with the exception of single 50p notes which will not be exchanged.
Festival Site The festival is split across different areas in and around Leeds Town Hall so feel free to wonder around the site and explore different spaces - the handy floor plan on the centre-pages also highlight all the festival spaces - if you're unsure of anything just ask a member of festival staff or one of our friendly volunteers. Outside is the festival's very own food and drink market and includes a range of fantastic gourmet and street food from across our region providing British and international dishes - perfect with selected beers. Whilst in the market be sure to check out the Whitelocks and Beacons tent with our second live music stage. Inside, the main beer line up is split across three halls with spaces dedicated to UK, European and US craft beer, this is complimented by a cider room and a cocktail beer bar courtesy of Leeds' very own North Bar. Live music will also take over the main stage every evening throughout the festival. The full beer, food and music line ups can be found over the following pages and further information can be found via listed websites and twitter profiles as well as www.leedsbeer.com Many of the brewers and food providers will be present at the festival and they will be delighted to talk to you about their beers and food so if you have any questions or want to know more just ask away.
Daily announcements During the festival we'll be hosting a number of special events, talks and presentations led by some of the invited breweries in the old courtroom, details will be available on the day from the information point in the main entrance to Leeds Town Hall. This part of the programme will also be available to view at www.leedsbeer.com
Water Aid This year the festival is supporting Water Aid and the crucial work they do in helping to provide clean safe water around the world. During the weekend collection bins will be dotted around the festival site and if you want to support the charity you can do so using festival tokens - which we will convert into sterling and donate to Water Aid on your behalf - it's the perfect way to use any unwanted single 50p notes but you can also donate higher amounts and UK sterling if you wish. For further information please visit: http://www.wateraid.org/uk - Thanks for your support. If you have any suggestions or comments about your experiences at the year's festival please let us know via email at leedsbeer@gmail.com and twitter @leedsbeer Programme listings are correct at time of going to press.

Music Whitelocks and Beacons present‌. After the success of the second Beacons festival in August this year, we are proud to be working alongside them and Whitelocks for the second International Beer Festival. Beacon programmer and director Ashley Kollakowski is also a joint owner of Whitelocks, so it makes sense that we merge the two together this weekend to bring you a mix of great local beers and great local bands. Featuring three live acts every session there will be 18 live acts and musicians playing throughout the weekend. Expect everything from Blues to American, plenty of Folk and a bit of Indie, it’s all good!
Whitelock's bar in the Beacons tent will feature beers from Acorn, Saltaire, Ridgeside & Four Thorns. Ask at the bar for further details.

Music YaDig? / JUMBO RECORDS / SHIFTLESS WHEN IDLE Present The 2nd DOUBLE DROP HOP When we got asked to provide the music last year we honestly had no idea how darn successful the festival was going to be, so again we’ve gone for bands that are used to playing to real ale loving crowds and know how to catch ears and turn heads in the noisiest of pubs… We’ve tried again to match the music with the passion for beer. So from the blues-bop, country-holla and general froth-blowing, ale-loving bottom of our hearts we present this years line-up.
Thursday 5th Sept – BACKYARD BURNERS Bluegrass, Country and ROWDY….I’ve seen these guys rockin’ everything and anything everywhere they go… The perfect opening band for a glass raising Thursday session. Expect Banjo, Double Bass, Harmonica and finger pickin’ FUN!!!
Friday 6th Sept – TOM ATTAH / LEEDS CITY STOMPERS Friday sees us revisiting two of last years festival favourites…And I’m sure more than a few of you will be excited about their return. The LEEDS CITY STOMPERS and TOM ATTAH quite simply blew us (and the ale-loving crowd) away last year. LEEDS CITY STOMPERS play their own brand of Delta stomps and olde time shufflers and are well versed in playing to beer enthusiasts.TOM ATTAH is truly the torch carrier for authentic blues, which has brought him the nickname of ‘The Living Bluesman’. Playing all over the joint from Glastonbury to The Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival, he’s also played with Grammy Award Winners and a who’s who of major artists, yet his performances are personal and raw…
Saturday 7th Sept – MYSTERY SOUP / JONNYTHEFIRTH JONNYTHEFIRTH has played major festivals, Town Halls and drinking dens as a solo artist, band or orchestra. From one-man blues band shouters to a whole ensemble Jonnythefirth is starting to turn some heads and with regular plays on BBC RADIO 6 and offers to play major festivals it’s not going to long till he hits up the mainstream…. MYSTERY SOUP has all the right ingredients for a delicious time (banjolele, tipple, double bass, tenor guitar and ukulele, washboard, trumpet, accordion and kazoo) and their blend of hokum, skiffle, skank with a nod towards fun means that they’re a real party band…You might recognise some of the band too so be prepared to be seduced by their sweet unforgettable sounds….
Sunday 8th Sept – JONNY HICK’S JUKEJOINT ALLSTARS To finish us off in style we got Sunday wrapped up with Jonny and the Allstars mix of rockabilly, hillbilly and twang…These guys won’t fail to turn the afternoon session into a memorable one…Feeding us some surfin’, rockabilly boppin’ country hoppin’ tunes, they’ll have you hypnotised into an ale drinkin’ foot tappin’ trance…
