Bollersville is average. Its inhabitants get to test every new product before it hits the market. In fact, they are not only proud to be average, they do all they can to stay average! And if that means putting all the grandparents into an old people’s home and getting rid of the children’s pet coati (the Fiddlesticks of the title), then that’s what they’ll do! The children of Bollersville have had enough so they start working on their own adventurous plan to set a new world record. The result is... total chaos!
The Moomins, Snorkmaiden and Little My, in search of adventures of their own, set sail for the Riviera, where, after a journey fraught with menacing storms and desert island dangers, Snorkmaiden is dazzled by the attentions of a playboy and Moomin learns that jealousy’s sting is the most painful of all. When Moominpappa befriends an aristocrat and adopts the name ‘de Moomin’, an exasperated Moominmamma retires to the relative calm of their trusty old boat, to wait for her family to come to their senses.

Director Tomm Moore’s follow up to The Secret of Kells is a spellbinding new animation based on Irish folklore, the legend of the selkies who live as seals in the water and humans on land. When six year old mute, Saoirse, finds a magical shell flute that belonged to her mother, she gains the ability to bring the ancient stories to life.
Seven years in the making, acclaimed Japanese fantasy adventure A Letter to Momo combines state-of-the-art traditional hand drawn animation with heart-warming, emotional storytelling for all. Momo is an 11-year-old girl who grew up in a big city. After her father passes away, she moves to the old family house on a remote island where she discovers his life-transforming letter.
Lola lives with her mum on a houseboat. Since her father left a year ago she has become introverted and is made fun of at school. Even worse her mother has started dating a new man, Kurt, whom Lola is determined not to like. When she meets new boy Rebin, a Kurd living illegally in Germany, she soon discovers that family and friendship are more important than petty arguments.

We will be welcoming director Lisa Mulcahy to the screening for an introduction and Q&A.

Fri 3 April, 4pm, HPPH Dir. Tim Burton, USA, 1990, 105 mins
Based on Roald Dahl’s book, a recently orphaned young boy stumbles onto a witch convention and must stop them, even after he has been turned into a mouse. Scenes of magic and mayhem are peppered with surprises as Angela Huston plays the wickedest witch of them all.
Think you’re not scared of spiders? Think again…Celebrate the 25th anniversary of this young adult horror classic as we bring Arachnophobia back to the big screen. Deadly South American spiders hiding in a coffin are unleashed on small-town America and an all-star cast including Jeff Daniels and John Goodman.
Tim Burton’s (The Nightmare Before Christmas, Frankenweenie) break-out hit celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, following a young Jonny Depp as misfit and goth-icon Edward as he learns to love and live in idyllic suburbia with one major problem: he has scissors for hands.
“I love Roald Dahl’s books and The Witches is a great, scary adaptation, made when children’s films were a lot darker than they are now. It’s really stood the test of time.” - Ruby, MediaFish
“Arachnophobia scared the pants off me first time around. When I was brave enough to watch it without a cushion, it was one of the most funfilled monster movies I’d ever seen” - Nick, LYFF

Not For Rental is the exciting new cinema programme in Leeds city centre for viewers aged 15 and over. Initally funded by Film Hub North and curated by MediaFish, a group of 15-24 year-olds with a passion for film, the programme now runs monthly from The Carriageworks Theatre in Leeds. The programme includes exciting, challenging and films rarely seen on the big screen. The films range from British Independent productions to archive screenings, documentaries and foreign language films covering everything from comedy to horror, action to drama. For the Leeds Young Film Festival, the programme is moving to Hyde Park Picture House where we are proud to bring you a selection of archive classics from directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger, a double bill of films from Marjane Satrapi, including her new black comedy, The Voices, starring Ryan Reynolds, the riotous mockumentary, What We Do in the Shadows from New Zealand (which won the Audience Award at Leeds International Film Festival in 2014) and a couple of very different coming-of-age stories from Germany and Denmark.

Sat 4 April, 2pm, Hyde Park Picture House Dirs. Michael Powell/Emeric Pressburger, UK, 1946, 104 mins An iconic masterpiece of British cinema, A Matter of Life and Death is an endlessly inventive WW2 fantasy set in a gorgeously photographed Technicolor England and a monochrome heaven. David Niven plays a British airman who survives a plane crash and falls in love with an American radio operator, only to be summoned to a dreamlike impression of the afterlife where he must fight for a chance to remain on earth with his new love. “Everything about Powell and Pressburger’s war-time classic is perfect. This timeless film about love conquering all is guaranteed to bring a tear to even the most hard-hearted person.” Sam, MediaFish Drama, War, Romance See this if you liked: Black Narcissus, Life and Death of Colonel Blimp See also: Strangers on a Train, The Sound of Music www.leedsyoungfilm.com

Persepolis
Sun 5 April, 2pm, Hyde Park Picture House Dir. Alfred Hitchcock, USA, 1950, 101 mins
Sat 4 April, 4pm, Hyde Park Picture House Dir. Marjane Satrapi, France/Iran/USA, 2007, 95 mins
Alfred Hitchcock’s chilling adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel is one of Hollywood’s finest psychological thrillers. The often imitated story follows a chance encounter on a train between a young tennis player and a charming psychopath who strike a bargain to exchange murders, hoping the absence of motive will enable them both to get away with their crimes.
Marjane Satrapi’s beautifully animated memoir tells the story of her childhood in revolutionary Iran and the culture shock of her emigration to Vienna as a teenager. Poignant, warm and funny, Persepolis combines a vivid coming of age tale with a fascinating historical perspective on Iranian history. See it with her latest film The Voices, which is screening straight afterwards at 6pm.
“Hitchcock at his best. Full of suspense, with stunning cinematography and a great script. A masterpiece of cinema from such a simple idea” Michael, MediaFish
“My favourite film adaptation of a graphic novel, Persepolis is enlightening, entertaining and beautifully animated.” - Alex, Leeds International Film Festival Programme Manager

Sat 4 April, 6pm, Hyde Park Picture House Dir. Marjane Satrapi, USA/Netherlands, 2014, 107 mins
Follow the exploits of Viago, Deacon, Vladislav and Peter, four vampires sharing a house in Wellington as they try to balance being undead with everyday problems like whose turn it is to wash up, where to find fresh blood and how to dress for a night out when you can’t see your reflection. Co-written by and starring Jermaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords, What We Do in the Shadows perfectly balances comedy, horror and social commentary in this hilarious film.
Marjane Satrapi returns with a deliciously dark comedy starring Ryan Reynolds as a man suffering from mental illness. Jerry is a slightly odd but charming guy who could do with a few human friends, rather than just his pets, to talk to. When he is stood up for a date with his office crush (Gemma Arterton) after coming off his medication, things take a sudden, deadly turn. Guided by his evil cat, Mr. Whiskers and loveable dog, Bosco, poor Jerry has to try and sort his life out once and for all.
“This hilarious mockumentary was the audience winner at Leeds International Film Festival in 2014 and was one of my favourite films of last year.” - Martin, Leeds Young Film Festival

Fifteen year old Charleen is Kurt Cobain’s biggest fan but doesn’t understand why growing up has to be so complicated. One day, feeling especially melodramatic and rebellious, she decides to commit suicide on a whim. Waking up in hospital after her failed attempt, both her, her family and her friends are forced to reassess their lives and relationships. This blackly comic drama looks at the affects our actions have on those around us and the fact that life is always worth living, no matter how bad things seem to be.
Nineteen year old Marie lives with her parents on a small island in Denmark where she works in a fish processing factory. Her life is dull but she has just attracted the attention of some of the local boys and her sexuality is beginning to awaken. At the same time she is diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, inherited from her catatonic, wheelchair-bound mother. Marie begins to suspect that her symptoms aren’t from a disease and that the truth is far more disturbing.
Recommended 15+ due to strong language and theme of teenage suicide.

Sun 5 April, 6pm, Hyde Park Picture House Dir. One9, USA, 2014, 74 mins
Mon 6 April, 6.30pm, Hyde Park Picture House Dir. Dave LaMattina/Chad Walker, USA, 2014, 90 mins
Time Is Illmatic explores a hip-hop classic, delving deep into the making of Nas’ 1994 debut album, Illmatic. Exploring the musical legacy from his jazz musician father and the social conditions that influenced his worldview, the film reveals how Nas channelled the collective angst of a generation of young black men searching for their voice in America.
Caroll Spinney has been Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since 1969 and at 80 years old, he has no intention of stopping. Caroll’s stories are the stuff of legend. He has been a constant presence in people’s lives for over 40 years, his path weaving through American history like that of Forrest Gump. His time inside the Bird has taught him about the world and about himself and, as the yellow feathers give way to grey hair, it is the man, not the puppet, who will steal your heart.

Thirteen-year-old American, Mica, takes to heart his Rabbi’s suggestion to help ‘heal the world,’ and decides that he will send baseballs to Cuba. He knows only that Cubans have few resources, love baseball, and gave his Jewish grandpa refuge during the Holocaust. As his project progresses, Mica learns that there is a very complicted political relationship between the USA and Cuba and that simply posting some sporting equipment is not going to be that easy. Undeterred he decides to follow through his mission to the end, even if that involves going against the wishes of his government.
