In addition to the main concert programme, there are many other informal concerts and events happening this year. All FREE admission Film screenings Screening of student Film Music compositions and “Sound Design” projects will take place at 12.30pm, every day in the Estival Bar.

Evening Concert 7.30pm University of Manchester Symphony Orchestra – Shostakovich 5 Mussorgsky – Night on a Bare Mountain Glazunov – Violin Concerto (violin – Catherine Landen) Shostakovich – Symphony No. 5 Conductors – David Scott and Tom Wood Estival 2011 is brought to a stunning close by the University of Manchester Symphony Orchestra playing Shostakovich’s masterpiece, his Fifth Symphony. Steeped in controversy, this work has provoked more scholarly attention than most, as “A Soviet Artist’s Response to Just Criticism”.

Now in its second year in operation, the Estival Bar returns to serve you a variety of alcoholic and soft drinks throughout the festival. The bar will be a great place to meet and socialise, also hosting a few informal performances throughout the week. Opening hours: 12noon - 2.30pm 4pm - interval of evening concert (c. 8.30pm)

Three settings within this multi-million pound arts venue host the different events this year: The Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall, the John Thaw Studio Theatre, and the Estival Bar (room G16). The Martin Harris Centre is located off Oxford Road, behind the Manchester Museum. On the university campus map it is No. 42 (circled in yellow below). Parking is nearby and cheap at the Bridgeford Street Car Park (Multi-Storey Car Park D), or other university multi-storeys.

Welcome to Estival 2011 Manchester University’s answer to the BBC PROMS is brought to you by the Manchester University Music Society. Now in its 33rd year, Estival is the city’s biggest student-run classical music festival, and showcases some of the city’s finest young musical talent in 12 concerts over just 4 days, this year following a Russian theme.
