We reinforce our ongoing relationship with BBC RADIO 3, by hosting four concert recordings, which will be broadcast as part of their Hungarian Chamber Music Series. The first concert in this series will be performed by our resident string quartet, the Quatuor Danel. Other highlights to the season include the popular creative writing Literature Live reading series which feature many high profile authors, including English novelist, and winner of the 2004 Booker Prize Alan Hollinghurst, in April. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Philip Grange on his recent British Composer award for his work Cloud Atlas which is performed in March at the Centre by the RNCM Wind Band. This concert will also include John Casken’s Distant Variations and there will be a chance to hear about the inspiration behind both pieces. We hope you will be able to join us for these and other outstanding events from this season’s exceptional programme at the Martin Harris Centre. For details of the entire programme, please refer to the handy tear-out events guide at the back of this brochure. Introducing The Martin Harris Centre

The Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama is a performance space situated at the heart of The University of Manchester. Alice Kettle textile wall hanging The Centre incorporates a 350-seat concert hall, a 150-seat studio theatre and an electroacoustic music studio. The foyer makes an immediately striking impact: its use of light, open space and bold areas of colour blend with Alice Kettle’s dynamic textile artwork, Red and Blue Movement in Three. During 2011, the Martin Harris Centre foyer will receive a newly commissioned textile wall hanging by Alice Kettle.

This embroidered work (right) will hang from the ceiling height of the foyer to the ground level. It is a piece illustrating expressive movement, the energy of mark making and the sense of sound. It shows elements of the scores and notations of the composer Prof David Berezan, other electro acoustic composers and dance notations within a background and landscape of line and colour. The impetus was to build on the analogies of colour, layer and tone between sound and image which imply movement. There are references to figures, sweeps of line and tiny marks made in stitch, digital stitch and small additions of glass beads. The work links with the existing Red and Blue Movement in Three which is a composite work of 3 wall hangings sited in the foyer.

350-seat Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall

150-seat John Thaw Studio Theatre

The Centre hosts many musicians, performers and prize-winning authors. It provides an excellent space for contemporary and classic theatre, music and comedy events, and holds a reading series that has in the past featured such literary luminaries as Martin Amis, Will Self, John Banville and Clive James. We also present new and exciting artists who go on to become household names as well as established artists performing to sell-out audiences all over the world.

The new piece as yet untitled shifts the sense of drama and scale into the more abstract texture and line of the stitch. The new Alice Kettle wall hanging has been commissioned by The Oglesby Charitable Trust.

So please come along, and discover why the Martin Harris Centre is attracting attention as an important arts venue throughout the North West.

“ The Martin Harris Centre is a fantastic venue which we would highly recommend! Our conference took place in the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall which is a brilliant space - a good size, excellent acoustics and very versatile. All the centre’s staff are also extremely friendly, helpful and efficient - a joy to work with! “ Charlotte Walker British Red Cross

Cloud Atlas Distant Variations

Philip Grange’s large-scale work for symphonic wind band entitled Cloud Atlas is based on David Mitchell’s eponymous novel, which was short-listed for the Booker Prize in 2003, and takes its use of symmetrically completing interlocking stories. The composition works Philip Grange through its various narratives, employing the ensemble in a vast array of different ways ranging from quiet, barely audible scurrying to terrifying dramatic tuttis. The composition has recently won an award at the 2010 BASCA British Composer Awards. If the majority of Grange’s compositions are influenced by the narratives from literary sources, then John Casken’s music provides an interesting contrast in so far as much of what he writes is influenced by the colours suggested by a literary source or by the fine arts. Distant Variations reflects this in so far as it was inspired by the composers’ experience of the sunrise over the Grand Canyon, and lines by Janek Schon that describe this as the “Fortresses of rock” coming to life.

The highlight of this concert is the European première of Grazioso!, inspired by Led Zeppelin, by one of today’s leading British composers. The French composer Bruno Mantovani’s ‘Interrupted Dances’ makes ‘certain types of popular music (such as jazz, techno and even flamenco)’ while Kenneth Hesketh is one of today’s most original voices. Psappha is grateful for the support this performance has received from the Holst Foundation and RVW Trust.

Drama Events Posh by Laura Wade University of Manchester Drama Society www.umdramasoc.co.uk

Part of the Manchester In-Fringe Drama Festival, Posh by Laura Wade is the performance to be shown at The Martin Harris Centre. “I’ve got a new rule for you mate, it’s called survival of the fittest, it’s called f**k you – we’re the Riot Club”

Posh is an exciting new and hilarious play that takes a satirical look at the traditions and clubs of Britain’s top university institutions exploring how true the saying goes – it’s not what you know but who you know. Somewhere in Oxford, a group of young bloods with cut-glass vowels and deep pockets meet, intent on restoring their right to rule. They are getting ready for a night of debauchery, decadence and bloody good wine. These are boys who are used to getting what they want – with no exceptions, but have they gone too far this time?
