LOOKING TOWARDS A BRIGHTER FUTURE Dear members of the boxing family, Welcome to the latest edition of Boxing News magazine, the official publication of the International Boxing Association (AIBA). As a part of the greater Olympic Family, AIBA strongly believes in the Olympic values of fairplay, excellence and friendship and this year our competitions and competitors have truly encapsulated these values. This year’s edition of the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Sofia have provided the stage for the brightest talents of the next generation to shine, it was also the chance to qualify for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in which I trust the young boxers will create the solid foundations of tomorrow’s boxing legacy. Also in the YOG program, we will see the appearance of youth women’s boxing for the first time in the Olympic ring. The sport is going from strength to strength following its landmark inclusion in the London 2012 Olympic Games and AIBA’s job now is to capitalize on the momentum gathered which has seen it develop into the fastest growing sport of its kind and bring women’s boxing to the top of any other women’s sports. I would like to extend my congratulations to each Franchise in WSB Season IV who displayed the utmost professionalism both in preparation and in competition. Eventual winners the Cuba Domadores and the determined WSB veterans Azerbaijan Baku Fires contested a deeply compelling and competitive final which was a credit to the heart and sportsmanship of both teams.

AIBA PRO BOXING LAUNCH – IMPORTANT MILESTONE IN DEVELOPMENT OF THE NOBLE ART AIBA is immensely proud to announce that a date to stage the most revolutionary competition in its history, the very first AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) event, has been confirmed with the inaugural cycle of the tournament taking place on Friday, October 24, 2014. “As President and on behalf of the entire boxing community, I am extremely happy that we have now set another milestone in the development of our beloved sport,” said AIBA President, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, as he expressed his delight at the announcement of the landmark date. “APB aims to bring boxing back to a mainstream position in the world of sports by taking into account the demands of its fans. As of October 2014, only the very best boxers will compete against each other on a merit-based and comprehensive ranking system.” For the first time ever, professional boxers who have had 20 or fewer fights will be able to qualify for the Olympic Games through AIBA Pro Boxing. This provides a vitally important bridge across a gap between AIBA Open Boxing and pro boxing, signalling a significant breakthrough in AIBA’s mission to govern all forms of boxing whilst creating a vibrant new culture of pro boxing, moulded by its own unique trends. The confirmation of the date comes after various discussions with AIBA Executive Committee Members, APB Executive Board Members and AIBA National Member Federations, along with media and commercial partners, after which it became apparent it would be suitable for all those involved to start the tournament in late October. As a result of this, boxers who have committed to join APB remain eligible for certain upcoming AIBA Open Boxing (AOB) competitions such as the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games until the APB registration’s deadline has passed.

THE FORMAT The event will be showcased internationally and staged across the globe with China, Germany, Russia, Argentina, Italy, Azerbaijan, Austria, Algeria, Cuba and Kazakhstan confirmed as host nations and discussions taking place with other countries to potentially host part of the tournament. Countries wishing to host any of the legs of the competition should register their interest directly to AIBA. What is special about the APB format is that each fight will see an increase in the number of rounds providing a chance for only the most resilient boxers to succeed and for them to adjust their skill set to comply with the demands of the competition. Such a challenge for adaptation will surely make for an intensely competitive tournament and also create a new and exciting qualification step towards Rio 2016. The schedule of the maiden cycle of APB will be accomplished as shown on the table opposite. COMPETITION BREAKDOWN A shortlist of 120 boxers from around 40 different nationalities was reviewed by 7 members of the APB Boxers’ Selection and Ranking Committee in February with the top 80 being selected and ranked in each of the 10 weight categories composed of eight boxers. According to these rankings, boxers will first compete twice over six rounds of three minutes to establish world rankings in each of the ten weight categories. Then, based on these world rankings, each boxer will again fight at least twice over six rounds in the Matches for Champions with those successful pitted against each other to challenge for the very first APB World Champion Titles contested over eight rounds.

MEET THE APB BOXERS APB’s upcoming introduction has whetted the appetites of a myriad of AIBA world-class boxers with aspirations of competing professionally. APB events are unique in that they allow a boxer to preserve his eligibility to fulfil the honor of representing his country in future Olympic Games and Continental Championships when usually competing professionally would mean sacrificing this opportunity. For the first time ever, pro boxers that have had 20 or fewer fights will be able to participate in the Olympic Games.
Adilbek NIYAZYMBETOV Kazakhstan, Light Heavyweight (81kg)
APB has managed to cement the services of some of the boxing world’s most scintillating talents. Here is an in-depth dissection of the skills, strengths and burgeoning careers of just some of the technically brilliant elite athletes who will showcase their ring credentials in APB.
The rangy Kazakh has everything in his locker to cause a wide range of problems at 81kg and will be looking to upset opponents with his awkward style and impose his physical presence by blending a long reach with his equally adept ability in relentless attacks and clever counter-attacks.

Former Beijing 2008 Olympian Conceição boasts an unblemished record in the WSB competition winning all of his three bouts for Franchise Italia Thunder. The Brazilian, who possesses thunderous punching power and lightning reactions to boot, was also the silver medallist in the AIBA World Boxing Championships, Almaty 2013.
Kazakhstan-born Russian Sergey Vodopyanov has bested some of professional boxing’s most highly touted talent, namely McJoe Arroyo and Gary Russell Jr. and was crowned World Champion in 2007 competing in the bantamweight division. He followed this with a silver medal in the succeeding AIBA World Boxing Championships as a featherweight, losing to Ukrainian superstar Vasyl Lomachenko in the Final.
A real student of the sport, Conceição has an uncanny ability to read the intricacies of a match and likes to box on the outside at distance behind a tight defense fused with effortless fluidity in movement. His ring intelligence will stand the AIBA world number two ranked lightweight in good stead ahead of the APB season.

Spindly southpaw Niyazymbetov is a consistent performer for Kazakhstan winning silver in the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Asian Games and in back to back World Boxing Championships and will be aiming to go one further and establish himself as the number one light heavyweight in the APB whilst at the same time justifying his AIBA world number one ranking.
Vodopyanov’s reflexes, balance and aggression make him able to put together crisp, dizzying combinations to the body and head with equal stinging power and precision accuracy. He has astute tactical analysis but sometimes finds it difficult to put his game plan into action in the ring.

There is a certain mystique surrounding Magomedrasul Medzhidov. He exudes ring generalship, a trait that has seen him win back to back World Championship titles in 2011 and 2013, garnering a reputation as something of a knockout artist in the super heavyweight division along the way. The Azeri has competed for the Azerbaijan Baku Fires in the WSB and also won a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Heavyweight Russo has garnered superstar status in his native Italy after becoming a two-time World Champion, winning gold in 2013 to add to his World Championships title six years previously in Chicago.
Having already established himself as a cool-headed operator in his weight category, Medzhidov prefers to wear his opponents down with an intense non-stop pressure fighting style and ferociously consistent work rate, throwing punches in bunches from mid-distance. After recent injury setbacks, the stoppage specialist will be eager to prove he has lost no ground on his contemporaries.
Russo is also twice a runner up in the Olympic Games and the 32-year-old will bring a wealth of experience over a longer rounds format with 19 fights in total (172) in WSB boxing for the Italia Thunder, with whom he became WSB Champion after finishing as the top ranked boxer individually in his category. Russo is a fast and aggressive boxer who looks to lure his opponents in with a low guard and prevail courtesy of his exceptional conditioning. “AIBA Pro Boxing is an excellent solution. I find that it provides benefits in three areas: you retain your Olympic Games eligibility, you receive financial security and you can still live your pro boxing dream!” – said Russo on the chance to compete professionally whilst preserving his Olympic Games eligibility.

QUALIFICATION SYSTEM GAMES OF THE XXXI OLYMPIAD – RIO 2016 A total of 286 qualifying positions for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games are available for boxers competing in AIBA tournaments and here in Boxing News, we present you how those slots that could lead to golden glory in Brazil can be attained in our breakdown of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved qualification system.
MEN’S BOXING QUALIFICATION WORLD SERIES OF BOXING (WSB) Along with the boxers qualifying through APB, a further 17 boxers will reach Rio through the hugely popular World Series of Boxing (WSB). WSB showcased some of the most celebrated factors of our sport and last term fused enthralling action with grit, flair and scintillatingly attractive boxing to make it an unforgettable season. This time around only the most proud and passionate will earn their place at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with the top ranking boxers of each weight category qualifying. The WSB Individual Rankings are given to boxers in each weight category and are updated automatically after each bout during the regular season. Individual ranking is determined by the highest number of wins during the regular WSB season from November 2014 until March 2015.

In the event of two boxers having the same number of wins, the boxer with fewer bouts is taken into account, then the head-to-head results for boxers competing in the same group, then the greater number of away wins. If there is still a tie, the greater number of points obtained in victories is taken into account and, finally, the lesser number of warnings over the course of the season.

AIBA WORLD BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015
For the upcoming Olympic Games, APB will provide 20 boxers with quota places becoming amalgamated with the other approved qualifying tournaments to provide a clear and transparent system of qualification.
At the AIBA World Boxing Championships Doha 2015, to be held from October 5-18, a further 23 men’s spots will be up for grabs for the top three boxers across 5 weight categories - 56kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, and 75kg - receiving a qualification spot as well as the gold and silver medallists from the 49kg, 52kg and 81kg. Joining them in Rio will be the newly-crowned 2015 World Champions in the heavyweight (91kg) and also in the super heavyweight (91+kg) categories.
The first phase will be based on the rankings decided by the APB Boxers’ Selection and Ranking Committee seeing the boxers first competing twice over six threeminute rounds to establish world rankings amongst the eight boxers in each of the ten weight categories. Then, based on these pre-ranking competitions, the boxers will again fight at least twice over six rounds for the Champions’ Title with those successful pitted against each other to challenge for the APB World Champion Titles over eight rounds. “This project is very important for us as APB is going to become in time the main program of AIBA. In addition to this, boxers will get new opportunities to continue their sports career. The APB fights will feature more rounds, which means they are suitable only for the most resistant boxers.” - said Mr Serik Konakbayev, AIBA Executive Committee member and the Vice President of the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation. Aside from the boxers who qualify automatically, 26 more hopefuls who competed in APB or WSB will be able to qualify for Rio through a specific Olympic qualifying event with a three rounds of three minutes format, which will be staged in May 2016 for the final chance to become an Olympian.
The last gasp chance for men to grasp Olympian status in Rio will take place at the AIBA World Olympic Qualifying Event in June 2016 which will offer 39 places for the Olympic Games. Weight Category

WOMEN’S CONTINENTAL OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION
A total of 36 places will be available for women’s boxers at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Women’s boxing will comprize the same three weight classes as were present in the London 2012 Olympic Games which saw the sports’ inaugural outing: flyweight (52kg), lightweight (60kg) and middleweight (75kg).
The remaining 20 places will be issued at four separate Women’s Continental Olympic Qualification Events staged between February and April 2016. The total number of quota places to be distributed in each weight category at the American Continental Olympic Qualifying Event will only be confirmed after the World Championships, when the Host Country will confirm the category in which it will use its Host Country Place.

TRIPARTITE COMMISSION INVITATIONAL PLACES A total of eight Tripartite Commission Invitation Places will be made available to eligible National Olympic Committees (NOCs) at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, which will be distributed as follows: MEN A total of five men boxers, with a maximum of one per weight category from the Bantamweight (56kg), Lightweight (60kg), Light Welterweight (64kg), Welterweight (69kg), Middleweight (75kg) divisions will be allocated Tripartite Commission Invitation Places.
The International Olympic Committee will invite all eligible NOCs to submit their requests for Tripartite Commission Invitation Places. The Tripartite Commission will confirm, in writing, the allocation of invitation places to the relevant NOCs after the end of the qualification period for the concerned sport.
HOST COUNTRY PLACES Five quota places for men will be given to the Host Country across five selected weight categories to be confirmed after the AIBA World Boxing Championships but prior to the Continental Olympic Qualifying Events with the chosen boxers able to qualify in the Continental Olympic Qualifying Events or the 2016 Final AOB World Qualifying Event.
WOMEN Three women boxers, with a maximum of one per weight category from the Flyweight (48-51kg), Lightweight (57-60kg), Middleweight (69-75kg) division will be allocated Tripartite Commission Invitation Places.
For women, the Host Country must confirm the use of the Host Country Place and the selected weight category after the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in 2016, but prior to the Continental Olympic Qualifying Events. The chosen boxers will be able to qualify via the Continental Olympic Qualifying Events.

ELIGIBILITY OF AN ATHLETE Before treading those first steps on the path to compete at Rio 2016, an athlete must beforehand meet a number of eligibility requirements to compete in the qualifying events. • All athletes must comply with the provisions of the Olympic Charter currently in force, including but not limited to Rule 41 (Nationality of Competitors). Only those athletes who are complying with the Olympic Charter may participate in the Olympic Games. • Age Requirements: All athletes participating in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games must be born between January 1, 1976 and December 31, 1997. • Medical Requirements: To be eligible to participate in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, all athletes must satisfy the medical requirements according to the AIBA Technical Rules and AOB Competition Rules. • Additional IF Requirements: To be eligible to participate in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, all athletes must: Have competed in at least one (1) of the Olympic Qualifying Events Satisfy the nationality requirements according to the AIBA Technical Rules and the AOB Competition Rules.

AIBA PRESIDENT RECEIVES HONORARY DOCTORATE FROM THE BULGARIAN NATIONAL SPORTS ACADE
The President of the International Boxing Association (AIBA), Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, has been awarded the Honorary Doc by the Bulgarian National Sports Academy “Vassil Levski” (NSA) in Sofia on April 23, 2014.
In his Honorary Doctorate Acceptance Speech Dr Wu, who also serves as the Executive Board Member of the Interna Olympic Committee (IOC), thanked the Academic Council and underlined that by instilling the Olympic values and cult the young generation, this educational institution not only produces the best ambassadors of these values, but also f educated members of our society.
“At a very early stage in my life, I found a language that helped me connect to the world and other people, other na This was and still is the language of sport. This is a language without boundaries and it travels freely and safely am the people of the world,” said the AIBA President.

AIBA YOUTH WORLD BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS SOFIA 2014 UNVEIL FUTURE STARS The 2014 edition of the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships took place in the beautiful city of Sofia, Bulgaria between April 10 and April 25. The competition was held at the Armeec Arena, and served as the sole Qualifying Event for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games.
Four of these qualifiers came from the semi-finalists of each weight category, while the fifth and sixth came from a new AIBA concept, the innovative ‘box-offs’, which saw the losers of the quarter-final contests compete against each other with the winners of those bouts qualifying for Nanjing as well.
To be eligible to compete in the Championships, both men and women boxers had to be aged 17 or 18 to compete, and born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 1997.
Prior to the start of the tournament, AIBA announced its “Road to Sofia” program, which is one of the most pioneering sports development programs in the world. The AIBA “Road to Dream” Program offers boxers and coaches from underprivileged and developing boxing countries the opportunity to attend an intensive two week training camps in the build-up to major AIBA competitions such as the World Championships.
Men boxers competed in ten weight categories: 46kg49kg, 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg, 81kg, 91kg, and 91+kg, while women boxers competed in three weight categories: 51kg, 60kg, and 75kg. As one of the most prestigious tournaments in the boxing calendar, the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships has always involved the greatest youth boxers in the world and Sofia featured a record breaking number of participants, as 105 nations entered 606 boxers (506 men and 100 women). Taking into consideration the 175 reserve boxers registered by AIBA National Member Federations for the event, an impressive total of 781 athletes were considered for competition in Sofia. This was almost double the amount of competitors who took part in the 17th edition of the Championships held in 2012 in Yerevan, Armenia, in which a total of 69 countries registered 367 boxers. The 2014 tournament was also historic as it featured the world’s finest women youth boxers competing for the first time ever for the chance to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, where women’s boxing will make its debut. The top four boxers in each category qualified for the historic YOG in Nanjing. For men, the top six ranked boxers from the different National Olympic Committees in each weight category qualified for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

AIBA provides each participant with airline tickets, accommodation, meals, full training facilities with equipment, training kits, boxing equipment, full medical and massage services as well as covering insurance, visa expenses and local transportation. The AIBA “Road to Sofia” Training Camp kicked off on March 29, and hosted 30 boxers (26 men and 4 women) as well as 13 coaches. Many of the boxers who took part in the camp performed well in Sofia, with two quarter-finalists and two gold medallists. Cuba’s virtuoso talent Javier Ibanez Diaz is one of the most highly regarded youth boxers in the world, and confirmed his glowing reputation with the gold medal in the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships.
The 18-year-old Bantamweight class (56kg) boxer dominated his final against Kazakhstan’s ASBC Asian Youth Continental Champion Sultan Zaurbek, and achieved a well-deserved gold medal after an excellent performance. His compatriot and Pavlyukov Youth Memorial Tournament silver medallist Yordan Alain Hernandez also claimed a gold medal in the Heavyweight class (91kg) as he beat Croatia’s Golden Gloves of Vojvodina Youth Tournament winner Toni Filipi. There was also double success for Kazakhstan, Russia, and USA who all won two men’s gold medals in the Championships, with solitary golds for Uzbekistan and the home nation Bulgaria as well in the men’s part of the tournament. Croatia had three men in the gold medal matches, but all of their boxers had to settle for silver medals. Kazakhstan went into the Finals with four finalists, two of their stars proving victorious. Their first finalist was Shalkar Aikynbay, who claimed gold in the Light Flyweight class (49kg) with a controlled performance against Uzbekistan’s Suleyman Latipov. His star teammate, Abylaykhan Zhussupov, was the main favorite of the Lightweight class (60kg) in Sofia, and lived up to his billing with an impressive win over Romania’s Arsen Mustafam. Russia’s Bibert Tumenov has been one of the biggest stars for his country over the past year, and he won gold in the Light Welterweight class (64kg) against Ukraine’s two-time EUBC European Junior Continental Champion Viktor Petrov, which came as a surprise to some boxing analysts. His victory over the Ukrainian was his second win over the same opponent in 2014, and his success in Sofia was due to a far more dominant performance. Dmitrii Nesterov was Russia’s second finalist after Tumenov, and the Pavlyukov Youth Memorial Tournament winner had a tremendous campaign in Sofia, as he eliminated the main favorites of the Middleweight class (75kg) including Australia’s AIBA Junior World Champion Satali Tevi Fuimaono en route to the Final.

AIBA YOUTH WORLD BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS UNVEIL THE STARS OF TOMORROW The 18-year-old Russian Youth National Champion had a quiet first round in his gold medal bout against Croatia’s Luka Plantic, but was able to change his speed and rhythm as the fight progressed, which ensured he claimed the victory at the end of the fight. In addition to the Russian team, the US team also won all of their finals on the eleventh and final competition day in Sofia. Their AIBA Junior World Champion Shakur Stevenson began the winning streak in the Men’s Flyweight class (52kg), while the powerful Super Heavyweight (91+kg) Darmani Rock also claimed gold in the event. Uzbekistan claimed the gold medal in the Welterweight category (69kg) in the last edition of the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships Yerevan 2012 with Akmalbek Kosimov getting the top prize. His younger compatriot Bektemir Melikuziev continued the wonderful Welterweight record for Uzbekistan, as he won gold against Croatia’s Luka Prtenjaca using his crafty counter-attacks to good effect.

Bulgaria’s Blagoy Naydenov had enjoyed rapturous ovations on home soil every time he stepped in the ring in Sofia, and the crowd were especially boisterous as he triumphed in the Men’s Light Heavyweight class (81kg) to the joy of his compatriots, as he saw success in Sofia. In the Women’s section of the Championships, Armenia’s Anush Grigoryan won on points against Irma Testa from Italy in the Flyweight class (51kg). Armenia had never claimed a gold medal in an AIBA Event for women before, which established Grigoryan’s performance as an historic win for her proud boxing nation. Grigoryan bagged a silver at the AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships in Albena last September, and went one better against Testa, who failed to make her height advantage count in the Final. Jajaira Gonzalez’s gold medal in the Women’s Lightweight class (60kg) ensured that USA took home three gold medals in Sofia, their best ever haul from an AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships.

Gonzalez, an AIBA Women’s Junior World Championships gold medallist eliminated her biggest rival for the gold in Sweden’s AIBA Youth World Champion Agnes Alexiusson in the quarter-finals, and grabbed the gold medal after defeating Esra Yildiz from Turkey. In the Middleweight class (75kg), Poland’s Elzbieta Wojcik took home the gold after a close battle with Australia’s Brandenburg Youth Cup winner Caitlin Parker, who eliminated US youngster Martha Fabela in her semi-final. Wojcik had a close bout against US teenage star and London 2012 Olympic Champion Claressa Shields in the final of the AIBA Women’s Youth World Championships in Albena last September, and used her experiences against world-class opposition positively in Sofia, with a clinical win over Parker. Every instalment of the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships has showcased boxing at its very best, with many of the stars of tomorrow exhibiting their skills to a wider audience for the very first time. The pressure is great in this environment, and the 2014 edition in Sofia was perhaps the most tense of all, with every competing boxer knowing that an impressive tournament would result in a qualification for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, and a potential medal. After almost two weeks of competition, dozens of medals had been awarded, and many more boxers had started preparing for potential Youth Olympic Games glory. The hard work from the fighters, the judges, the referees and the entire background staff of AIBA was all worth it in the end, as everybody involved came to fall in love with the welcoming city of Sofia, with all contributors eagerly awaiting the next version of the Championships.

QUALIFIED BOXERS FOR NANJING 2014 YOG
STARS OF TOMORROW QUALIFY FOR YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES The second edition of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is set to take place in Nanjing, China. Located in the lower Yangtze River, Nanjing has a prominent base in Chinese history and culture, and is a fitting site to take over from Singapore as the host of the YOG. Boxing has long been established in the Olympic structure, having made its debut in the 1904 Games in St. Louis, Missouri, and its traditions have remained in the YOG, where it is one of the marquee events in the competition. Over 600 boxers competed for the chance to qualify, via the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships and Women Youth Olympic Qualifying Event which were held in April in Sofia, Bulgaria. The qualifying process was exceptionally tough, with only the top six boxers for men and top four boxers for women qualifying for the YOG per weight category. As a result, a total of 60 youth men and 18 youth women boxers have qualified to participate in the prestigious Olympic Games. For the first time in boxing history, the upcoming YOG will welcome the debut of the Youth Women’s Boxing in the Olympic Games in three Olympic Categories – 51kg, 60kg and 75kg. This move has been welcomed with enthusiasm by the entire sporting world, and the spectators in Nanjing are already excited for the debut of the women. “I would like to congratulate all of the boxers and the National Federations who have qualified for the Youth Olympic Games. In addition, this is an incredibly exciting time for women’s boxing, with the sport truly beginning to blossom following their landmark inclusion in the London 2012 Olympic Games,” – said the AIBA President, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu. As per the qualification pathway, there was a maximum of three quotas for men and two quotas for women for each National Olympic Committee (NOC) as well as 2 Host City Quota Places (for 1 man and 1 woman) that were allocated to China.

Initially, there were also Universality Quota Places allocated for certain weight categories. Unfortunately, the boxers for these quotas did not meet the required technical level needed for competition, and therefore for their own safety, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) decided to reallocate these quotas. This decision signified that the physical integrity of an athlete is always at the forefront of AIBA’s concerns. Therefore, all of the four boxers who reached the semifinals in Sofia qualified directly for Nanjing. Then, in an innovative twist, AIBA created the ‘Box-Off’ concept which saw the losers of the quarter-finals face each other in another bout in Bulgaria, the winner of which identified the 5th and 6th placed qualified boxers in a fair and transparent manner. Acting in accordance to the procedure in regards of the confirmation of the qualified boxers for the Olympic Games, AIBA had to first send letters with the names of the qualified boxers to each National Olympic Committee. In turn, each of the NOCs had to accept, refuse, or choose the allocated quota places that they were allocated. Each refused quota was then reallocated to the next best ranked boxer in the same weight category. At the same time, some NOCs had to return any quota above their threshold back to AIBA. After that, AIBA met with IOC to select the replacement. Following that process, all the replacement boxers had to be reported to the respective NOCs and confirmed by them. Now that every step of the qualifying process has been checked and verified, AIBA is pleased to announce the final list of boxers who have qualified for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, which is to be held from August 16 until August 28, 2014 and wishes each competitor the best of luck in the tournament.

WSB REGULAR SEASON HIGHLIGHTS The World Series of Boxing (WSB) Season IV started off in spectacular style, with the Regular Season widely regarded as the finest instalment of WSB in the history of the tournament.
While Group A consisted of many teams who were attempting to fully establish themselves in WSB, Group B was a far heftier proposition, and was labelled ‘Group of Death’ by many observers.
Season IV began in November 2013, and featured the impressive Cuba Domadores, making their debut in the WSB ranks.
The debuting Cuba Domadores were thrown straight into the proverbial lion’s den, in a group consisting of the defending WSB champions Astana Arlans Kazakhstan, Season III semi-finalists Mexico Guerreros, a reborn and lethal Russian Team, WSB stalwarts Azerbaijan Baku Fires and the rugged Series III quarterfinalists Hussars Poland.
The WSB Regular Season consisted of two groups of six teams each, with four of them qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition. The twelve teams in total encompassed four continents, and featured many of the finest boxers on the planet. Group A was an intriguing one, and full of teams who were aiming to realize their potential in WSB. The eventual winners of Group A were the flamboyant Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder, who won nine of their ten Regular Season matches, with 35 wins against 15 losses. Italy amassed one of the best squads in WSB between Season III and IV, and the likes of Andrew Selby and Clemente Russo gave the Italians a winning edge as they finished top of Group A by a single point. They were joined in the knockout stages by Ukraine Otamans, the beaten finalists in WSB Season III, who narrowly finished in second place with an 8-2 record. The other two qualifiers had less impressive Regular Season records. Both Team Germany and USA Knockouts lost more matches than they won, but they qualified ahead of Argentina Condors and Algeria Desert Hawks. Despite the inconsistencies of the bottom four teams in the group, they all at times showcased some incredible boxing, and all have the capabilities to improve next season.

Despite the fact that the Cuba Domadores were in their first ever WSB season, they quickly became expert match winners, with just one defeat throughout the whole of the Regular Season, a narrow 3-2 away loss to the tough Russian Boxing Team. The Cubans only lost 9 of their 50 Regular Season bouts, winning their first 15 on their way to easily winning Group B with 28 points, six ahead of second-placed defending champions Astana Arlans Kazakhstan, who won seven of their ten Regular Season contests. The Astana Arlans lived up to their pre-season hype and as ever were ably aided by their master tactician and Head Coach Sergiy Korchynskyy. Cuba and Kazakhstan were joined in the knockout stages by the Russian Boxing Team, and the Azerbaijan Baku Fires, who both showed flashes of brilliance in the Regular Season, and their beginnings in a very tough group paid dividends for them in the latter stages of WSB Season IV.

WSB SEASON IV INCREDIBLE PLAYOFFS WITH CUBA VS USA AND UKRAINE VS RUSSIA After an enthralling Regular Season, the World Series of Boxing (WSB) Season IV Playoffs continued the excitement, with many surprising results and quality performances along the way.
Defending WSB champions Astana Arlans Kazakhstan battled through a tough away first leg against Team Germany with a 3-2 victory, before dismantling the Germans at home, with a crushing 5-0 victory.
The quarter-finals saw the best of Group A step up against the best of Group B and remarkably, all four qualifiers from Group B defeated their rivals to head to the semi-finals.
The Russian Boxing Team met Season III finalists Ukraine Otamans in a highly emotional quarter-final contest, which was described by AIBA President and WSB Board Chairman, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, as a “perfect symbol of peace through sport.”
Few expected Azerbaijan Baku Fires to trouble the much heralded Dolce & Gabbana Italia Thunder, but the Baku Fires have always been a match for anybody in WSB and they won the first leg at home 5-0, which sent shock waves through the boxing world. The Italians needed their own clean sweep at home in Caserta to have any chance of reaching the final four, but could only win 4-1, with Azerbaijan’s Super Heavyweight Arslanbek Makhmudov sensationally knocking out the highly rated Italia Thunder’s representative Mihai Nistor in Italy.

The first leg in Russia saw a comfortable win for the home team, as they trounced Ukraine 4-1, and they repeated the result in Ukraine in leg two, giving a mammoth 8-2 aggregate win for the Russians, and in turn eliminating the former finalists. Quarter-final number four was an all-star affair, as two of the greatest boxing nations in the history of the sport met for the first time in the WSB format.
WORLD SERIES OF BOXING
The Cuba Domadores, fresh off nine wins out of ten in the Regular Season, met with the exciting but unpredictable USA Knockouts, who had been inconsistent in their start to the WSB season.
Armed with their solid undefeated home record, Cuba dazzled in the second leg, winning all five matches en route to a slick 8-2 aggregate defeat of the Russians, and a place in the WSB Finals in their debut season.
The quality of the Cuba Domadores saw them scrape a 3-2 lead in the first leg in the U.S. and they asserted their brilliance in the second leg with a 5-0 whitewash win.
Both the Azerbaijan Baku Fires and the Astana Arlans Kazakhstan had different motivations for reaching the Finals, with Azerbaijan eager record their first ever appearance while Kazakhstan wanted to win the WSB title for the second season in a row.
These results saw the two semi-finals taking place between the Russian Boxing Team against the Cuba Domadores, and Azerbaijan Baku Fires against Astana Arlans Kazakhstan. The Russian Boxing Team had given the Cuba Domadores its only WSB defeat and the Cubans used the first leg of the semi-finals to atone for that loss in the same venue that it occurred in, as they won the night 3-2 thanks in part to a virtuoso performance from Heavyweight Erislandy Savon.
Their semi-final could not have been closer, especially after a narrow home win for the Astana Arlans Kazakhstan in the first semi, as they won the night 3-2 thanks in part to great performances from Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Vasilii Levit. The Azerbaijan Baku Fires went into their home second leg with an amazing 24-6 home record and they extended that to 30-7 after a breathtaking 4-1 second leg victory in front of their home fans. A result that sent the defending champions crashing out of the tournament and led to Azerbaijan Baku Fires finally reaching the WSB Finals in their fourth year of trying.

THE CUBA DOMADORES BECOME WSB CHAMPIONS IN THEIR DEBUT SEASON The World Series of Boxing (WSB) celebrated its Season IV Finals on Friday June 6 and Saturday June 7 at the Sarhadchi Olympic Sport Complex in the spectacular city of Baku, Azerbaijan.
The first leg resulted in a narrow 3-2 win for Cuba on the night with some tremendous performances from their star boxers Yosbany Veitia, Arlen Lopez and Erislandy Savon.
It was an occasion that delivered great drama and world class sporting skill, as the home favorites Azerbaijan Baku Fires faced the debuting Cuba Domadores in a two-legged, ten-bout event spanning two days as the ultimate winner was crowned Season IV Champion.
Cuba’s lead would have stretched to 4-1 going into leg two, but a career best performance from Gaybatulla Gadhialiyev in his victory of Yasnier Toledo gave the Azeris hope going into night two.
After two nights and eleven fights containing enthralling action, it was the Cuba Domadores who claimed victory, defeating the Baku Fires by the slightest of gaps.

Cuba’s Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo won the second fight of the evening, it was 1-1 on the night, and 4-3 on aggregate to the Cubans, with the Baku Fires needing to win two of the last three fights of the Finals to take the contest into a Sudden Death Bout. Against all the odds, they did just that, as Lightweight Albert Selimov snapped the undefeated streak of the number one ranked Lazaro Alvarez, and their imposing Super Heavyweight Arslanbek Makhmudov was too good for Cuba’s José Angel Larduet.
These wins saw Azerbaijan go 3-1 up on the night and, crucially, 5-4 on aggregate which meant that even if they were not victorious in the fifth bout of the evening, the Baku Fires would still be in with a chance of victory. Cuba’s Julio Cesar De La Cruz won every round of his contest against Mikhail Dauhaliavets, and this saw the Sudden Death match gain much significance. Both Azerbaijan’s Yauheni Ramashkevich and Cuba Domadores’ Arisnoydis Despaigne knew that the stakes were at an all-time high in their Sudden Death shootout, and the Cuban ultimately prevailed, making it 3-3 on the night and 6-5 on aggregate for the Domadores, who achieved WSB glory in their debut season, with the narrowest possible win.

WSB DEVELOPMENT DISCUSSED AT THE FRANCHISE CONFERENCE The World Series of Boxing (WSB) Post Season IV Franchise Conference was wrapped up in Baku, following two days of intense discussions between the WSB Franchises, who had travelled from four continents to attend.
competition format to accommodate the increase in number of WSB Franchises from 12 to 15, with new additions from China, Morocco and Venezuela taking part, plans for which were presented at the Conference.
The conference took place on June 5 and 6, just before the two-legged WSB Finals, with the aim of providing each of the future WSB Franchises an overall evaluation of Season IV and to discuss detailed plans and clear objectives for the upcoming Season V.
In addition, new PR and Marketing strategies were discussed to enhance the overall revenues for each Franchise and WSB as well as create a mutually sound financial environment within the competition amongst which the overall improvement of the quality of TV production was one of the most important issues to be determined.
“The WSB program has overall significantly improved and expanded throughout these four seasons, and the great support from all Franchises and participating National Federations in this continuous development has been the key to this success.” stated AIBA President and WSB Board Chairman, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, in his opening speech at the Conference. During the course of the Franchise Conference, the WSB team presented a concrete assessment of Season IV and also emphasised certain matters that were earmarked for improvement in the subsequent season. The second part of the Conference was dedicated to the upcoming Season V which will see a brand new
It was agreed that all host broadcasters in hosting Franchise countries will work closely with WSB to provide the best quality television coverage to broadcast the much anticipated success of Season V. Interesting new developments were also revealed such as the start of Season V being confirmed as the beginning of January 2015 and the requirement that all foreign boxers be selected via a ‘Boxers’ Draft’ due to the Olympic Qualifying Process. As we are all aware, the forthcoming WSB Season holds significant importance as it will represent the first qualifying event for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Therefore, the Olympic Games qualification process featured as one of the central themes of discussion. WSB Chief Executive Officer Mr Karim Bouzidi noted after the Conference the seriousness with which all Franchise representatives had taken the opportunity for discussion and had worked hard to resolve important matters over the course of the two-day meeting. Mr Bouzidi also announced that the WSB Team Draw will be held on July 16 in Istanbul within the AIBA Executive Committee Meeting. Finally, WSB provided Franchises with some of the upcoming innovations for the new Season V, amongst which will be the new WSB website currently under the trusted construction of and to be completed by one of the biggest web-design names in the industry.

WOMEN IN BOXING: MEET ‘COACH CHRISTY’ The old time notion of boxing being only for men has long been disproven. While the women boxers at the London 2012 Olympic Games proved they were just as skilful as their men counterparts in the ring with some masterful displays, women in other areas of our sport have been forging ways to break the ranks outside it. One of these areas is in the field of coaching. Dr Christy Halbert, popularly referred to as ‘Coach Christy’, is an exceptional example of dedication, perseverance and achievement in boxing coaching. In 2013, she reached elite status and stands as the only woman boxing coach ever to achieve the position of AIBA 3 Star Coach and AIBA Coach Instructor after attending a seminar held in Assisi, Italy. Born and raised in the U.S.A, Dr Halbert has always been a vocal advocate of women’s boxing, a figurehead who promoted the inclusion of the sport in the Olympic Games program through various multimedia platforms and by conducting public multimedia lectures on the “Debut of Women’s Olympic Boxing”. Her commendable journey in coaching began upon hanging up her gloves as an undefeated active boxer

in 1999, after which she quickly made the transition into coaching, becoming a professional trainer and cutwoman and then a National Level coach for USA Boxing. During her time with the team, she served as International Coach, Head Coach at the inaugural Women’s World Boxing Championships in 2001 and Team Coach at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Her international pedigree has seen her conduct coaching courses worldwide with schemes in Trinidad, Kazakhstan, Scotland and Sri Lanka. Christy has also played a continuous vital role in the “AIBA Road to Dream” initiatives beginning in 2010 as an Assistant Coach for the Road to Barbados, and as Head Coach for both the Road to Antalya 2011 and the recently concluded Road to Sofia 2014. Christy is also the Secretary of the AIBA Women’s Commission.

Away from boxing, Dr Halbert practices professionally as a sociologist specializing in sport, gender and social psychology, a field she also researches and teaches and as well as being involved in corporate training. She received her B.A. in Sociology and Mass Communications from Western Kentucky University in 1992. She followed this by attaining an M.A. and then a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Kentucky. Her story is unique in that she has managed to fuse her extensive experience in boxing with education and study to challenge preconceptions of women in the sport and benefit her students with advanced, modern training techniques. Christy has even put this invaluable boxing know-how to print and authored a book on training methods and competitive strategies aimed at giving a boxer the edge to success.
She currently holds the post of Director and Head Coach of Nashville Boxing Resource Center, Tennessee, where 14 national champions have florished under her astute stewardship. In recognition of her devotion to boxing both nationally and internationally, Christy has been awarded the Olympic Torch Award 2011 by the United States Olympic Committee and the Guiding Women in Sport Award 2013 by the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport. In 2014, in honor of her unparalleled achievements and tireless contribution to the sport of boxing, she was selected as part of the inaugural class inducted into the International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame. Dr. Christy Halbert truly embodies the work ethic attributed to our sport, continually carving out a path for women boxers to carry on their journey to success, dispelling that same notion that boxing is a sport only for men with each step. FIRST AMONG ALL Her name is Kheira Sidi Yakoub. She lives in Algeria, the country of her birth, with her husband and their four children. Professionally, she is a master of two fields - the language of French and the sport of boxing.
Since then, Mrs Sidi Yakoub has officiated in some of the most prestigious championships around the world, forging an impressive career that has seen her become the first woman to officiate in a World Boxing Championships.
Kheira has taught French to secondary school students for the past 22 years, but neither her job nor her roles as a mother and a wife have been allowed to interfere with her goal to reach the peak of world boxing.
Her credibility as an official saw her required to take part in the WSB, one of the most ambitious and revolutionary projects from AIBA and during the London 2012 Olympic Games, Kheira made history as the first woman referee inside the ring. In that same year, she became the first woman 5-Star R&J, and in 2013 became an AIBA R&J Instructor.
The road to that goal began in 1992 when she became a second coach for her husband at their local boxing club in Algeria. The following year, Kheira successfully applied for R&J in her home country where her personal attributes for the role were assessed and scrutinized. She managed to achieve National R&J Level before phenomenally reaching the highest AIBA 3-Star International R&J Level just a few years later.

GREATEST OLYMPIC BOXERS We asked our followers on Facebook and Twitter to recommend the greatest Olympic boxers in history. Here are the five names which achieved the most mentions. László Papp was Hungary’s greatest ever boxer, and the first boxer to win three gold medals at the Olympic Games. After his first gold medal in London in 1948 at Middleweight, Papp went onto win two more at Light Middleweight, in Helsinki in 1952, and in Melbourne in 1956. Papp’s legacy remains a powerful one amongst boxing fans,and especially in his home country where the biggest indoor arena in Hungary is named after him. Cuba’s Teófilo Stevenson also won three gold medals at the Olympic Games, but in reality it could have been as many as five. At 6ft 5in, Stevenson towered over his opponents in the ring, and his power and speed saw him win successive gold medals in Munich in 1972, Montreal in 1976, and Moscow in 1980 in the Heavyweight class. Stevenson was still one of the best in the world during the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games, but Cuba’s boycott of those games saw his gold medal count stay at a still incredible three.

His boxing legacy lives on not only with his record, but because his nephew Erislandy Savon now represents Cuba at Heavyweight, and went undefeated in his first WSB season. Ukraine’s Vasyl Lomachenko is widely regarded as one of the greatest Olympic boxers of all time, and the tremendously talented athlete won two gold medals by the time he was just 24 years old. His wins in Beijing 2008 and London 2012 were perhaps unparalleled in regard of just how decisively he dominated his opponents in both tournaments. In Beijing, Lomachenko beat his five opponents by an astonishing 58-13 on the way to his first gold medal, and was awarded the Val Barker Trophy. In London, he defeated Cuba’s world class Yasnier Toledo in the semi-finals, and Han Soon-Chul of Korea in the Final 19-9.
America’s Howard Davis Jr was inspired to box after seeing Muhammad Ali in the ring, and he emulated his hero by winning an Olympic gold medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, just one week after the passing of his mother. Despite this being his only Olympic success, Davis had an unbelievable tournament, and won the coveted Val Barker Trophy, named in honor of the former British boxer, which is presented every four years to the Olympic boxing athlete who displays exemplary skill during the competition. Davis was awarded the trophy over other great Olympians that year including his teammate Sugar Ray Leonard and Teófilo Stevenson. Another Cuban, Felix Savon became the third man to win three Olympic gold medals with his Heavyweight wins coming in Barcelona in 1992, in Atlanta in 1996, and in Sydney in 2000. Savon was a highly skilled technical fighter, who continued the

AIBA WORLD BOXING ACADEMY TO BECOME CENTER OF EXCELLENCE The AIBA World Boxing Academy is getting ready to take on its first guests from across the globe this coming autumn, announced Kazakhstan Boxing Federation Vice President Mr Yuriy Tskhay recently to the Kazakh media, whilst also stating he is confident that the complex will soon become the center of world boxing.
National Federations. Having become familiar with the Academy, AIBA President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu,thanked the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation president Timur Kulibayev for the hard work carried out by the Federation and added that the Academy will become the center of excellence for the development of AIBA boxers around the world.
Mr Tskhay expressed his pride that the Academy, which was put into operation nearly a month ago and to which there is no comparable sporting complex in the world, came to Almaty.
Possessing modern training bases for the preparation not only of boxers but for coaches, R&Js, doctors, sport managers and administrators - this sports complex will be one of the key instruments in the development and promotion of boxing worldwide.
The AIBA World Boxing Academy is a sports-study complex built on over 29,500 square meters of land in an environmentally friendly zone in the picturesque foothills of Trans-Ili Alatau in the Talgarsky district of the Almaty Province. It is the first sports-study complex to possess everything necessary for the organization of quality training programs that meet the most modern preparation requirements of boxers. As well as this, the Academy provides comfortable provisions for relaxation and recovery, making it unparalleled in the sporting world. Amongst the facilities at the Academy is a sporting complex for training and competition equipped with eight Olympic training boxing rings, a 25m swimming pool, a football pitch complying with international standards, running tracks, administrative housing, accomodation and a cafeteria. Immediately on its grounds it can accommodate up to 170 athletes. The agreement between AIBA and the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation regarding the building of the AIBA World Boxing Academy was signed in August 2011. Following the signing to the agreement the Academy project was presented at the AIBA Executive Committee, and the construction of the complex began in October 2011. During the AIBA World Boxing Championships Almaty 2013 held in October, a presentation of the AIBA World Boxing Academy was held for members of the AIBA Executive Committee, and members of the

AIBA COACHES MANAGEMENT SYSTEM Investment in coaches is a key priority for AIBA to enable us to continually deliver top quality boxers to the world stage. AIBA has developed a clear coaching pathway to progress from national level all the way up to the AIBA 3-Star certification. This route ensures high standards in coaching quality globally. A total of 35 coaches from 19 countries have attended the International Boxing Association (AIBA) 3-Star Coaches Course last April in Sofia, Bulgaria. Organized in conjunction with the Youth World Boxing Championships, the course lasted for seven days and was led by AIBA Executive Committee Member and Coaches Commission Chairman, Mr Adam Kusior (Poland), assisted by Mr Michail Takov (Bulgaria).

Five Road to Sofia coaches have also participated in the course, which provided a fantastic opportunity offered by AIBA to those coming from underprivileged countries. A comprehensive system for the AIBA Coaches Management System is controlled and centralized by AIBA; therefore, the quality and performances of coaches at all levels are constantly improving. The AIBA Coaches Management System is also in place to prevent any unqualified coach having an influence on the image and quality of the sport of boxing and on the health and safety of the boxers. As well as the 3-Star Coaches Course, a number of 1 and 2 star Coaches Courses were organized from January to June this year.
