The Toxicity of Guilt and Shame by Jessica Dancingheart

A

s we journey through life, it is our lot as humans to make mistakes and not meet our own or other people’s expectations. Unfortunately, these experiences of missing the mark can lead to feelings of shame and guilt. Just as an uncleaned food spill gets messier, unresolved guilt and shame do as well. As long as they are not dealt with, these two reactions can cause low self-esteem, depression, withdrawal, self-aggression, and outward aggression. It is important for us as parents to guide our children to view disappointments and mistakes as opportunities for learning and taking corrective action, so we can have healthy relationships and get closer to achieving our goals. We can do so by teaching them in a non-punitive environment that when we reach the painful junc-

tures of seeming failures to ask the questions, “What happened? “Who was harmed? “Who was responsible for what part? “What were the unspoken expectations? “Were the spoken expectations realistic? “What of our current skills and resources can we use to take corrective actions? “What additional skills or resources do we need? If we were to apply this to a relational harm, for example the exchange of painful words, we could ask all involved to explain what happened. So, if Johnny called Annie “stupid, we

might find out that Johnny was playing with Annie’s toy without asking. When Annie found out, she took away the toy angrily from Johnny, telling him that he could not play with her or her toy ever again, and Johnny in his upset, called Annie “Stupid. It would be clear when finding out the facts that both Annie and Johnny were harmed. Annie’s toy was used without her permission, and she felt pain when she was called stupid. Johnny was hurt as he felt fear and lost hope of being able to play with his friend Annie or her toy. When Johnny and Annie are asked what part they are responsible for, if they trust they won’t be punished or made out to be bad people, Johnny may say, “I am sorry Annie that I played with your toy without asking and then called you stupid. Annie may say, “I am sorry for grabbing the toy from you and saying I won’t play with you again. With older kids, as is age appropriate, you may explore the expectations. In this case,

the unspoken expectations may have been that Johnny thought he could play with Annie’s toys anytime, and Annie may have thought that he could only play with her toys when he asked. Once the unspoken expectations are articulated, there could be a discussion of how they could work for all involved. If there was a spoken expectation/ agreement that Johnny would ask before using Annie’s toys, then Annie and Johnny could see whether that is realistic under all circumstances. For example, if Annie is not there, is it realistic for Johnny to ask for permission? Obviously not, so there could be clarification that Johnny must ask for permission, and if Annie is not around he could only play with some of her toys and not others. To take corrective action, Johnny may apologize and offer Annie the ability to play with any of his toys without asking for an hour. Annie may say sorry and offer to play with him and both his and her toys. In this case, additional skills and resources are not needed, but in the case of, let’s say, a failed test, the additional skill and resources may be guided study time and/or review of the failed test to find gaps in understanding and a subsequent focus on learning what is not understood. When we ask these questions non-punitively, with the idea that mistakes are not a reflection of our self-worth, and practice this method ourselves, our children will grow

up to be well-adjusted, selfrespecting, and self-responsible people, with tools to transform guilt and shame into stronger relationships and stamina for achieving their goals.

SIGNS OF SPRING

by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II

I

love to see, hear, and smell the coming of spring each year. If you are sensitive to nature, as I am, you see signs of spring that start as early as January, like the days getting longer. It is usually the birds that give the first audio signs. It is the lengthening of days that starts their breeding hormones flowing and

Forsythia in bloom.

gives them the urge to sing. I might hear a Song Sparrow singing in a marsh area, or a

House Finch warbling from a treetop. Later in the spring I always hear American Robins “sounding off” to claim their territories and attract a mate. It is the male that does the singing, not the female. This is true with most birds. In February the crocuses are blooming, and later, the daffodils and tulips begin to pop their heads out of the ground. It is interesting that some kinds of flower bulbs grow and appear sooner than others. This is particularly true on the south side of a building in the sun. It has what we call a warmer microclimate compared to the shady north side. Tulips are usually the last of the bulb flowers to bloom. In March you might notice that Red-winged Blackbirds are beginning to appear in swamp areas, singing their distinctive “oak-a-leeee” call. I like to think they are singing my name! You should take your iPod out of your ear, go outside, and listen for these various bird songs. Then try to spot and identify

the kind of bird that is singing. You might even get a copy of a bird book that has both the pictures and songs of the birds that have been recorded by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. You can get a similar application for your iPhone. This can become a fun activity for the whole family. Another swamp sound to listen for later in the spring is the call of chorus frogs. It is similar to the sound of running you finger along a hair comb. When a lot of these frogs join together in song, it indeed makes a chorus; thus their name. You may also begin to hear some other kinds of frogs giving their distinctive calls. As spring progresses, notice the buds on the bushes and trees in your yard, neighborhood park, or school yard. They will begin to swell in size, and some may even change color. One of the earliest bushes to bloom is Forsythia. It has beautiful bright yellow flowers. Then later you may see wild plum and apple trees begin to bloom. I love the smell of these blossoms! One of my favorite kind of bird appears in late April or early May. They are the swallows, especially Barn, Tree, and Cliff Swallows. All swallows eat flying insects.

That is why they migrate south before winter and return again in the spring. There must be flying insects present in order for these birds to survive. The swallows are followed by other kinds of migratory birds such as orioles, tanagers, vireos, and warblers. They are called “neotropical species” because they migrate south to warmer climates in the fall and return back here in the spring. I hope you will enjoy the spring as I do by getting outside and using all your senses to see what you can discover. This will certainly bring you closer to nature!

WHAT IS SO “SPECIAL” ABOUT ART?

by Claudia Lewis

The knowledge assessed on standardized tests is essential, but it isn’t the whole picture. Plenty of studies confirm what art teachers have always known: more exposure to the arts increases higher-order critical thinking skills and helps to improve test scores.

Special (spesh-uhl) noun, given unusual treatment because of being uncommon.

A

re the arts special? Visit many school websites and you will discover that visual art and performing arts are listed in a department known as “Specials.” As an artist and art teacher, I know that the arts are, in fact, very special. Uncommon is the part that worries me. The tenuous position of the arts in our public schools and the lack of understanding of their worth is nothing new. When budgets are strained, the “Specials” have always been the first to go. But as a growing number of studies have shown, schools without robust programs in visual and performing arts are missing the boat when it comes to preparing students to be productive members of the information age.

21st Century skills

In the 20th cCentury, when most American workers held industrial jobs, the essential skills were knowing a trade, following directions, getting along with others, working hard, and being efficient, prompt, honest, and fair. Our

public school system was originally designed to teach these skills and prepare our workforce. In the 21st century, we have moved into the information age where more than 50% of tomorrow’s new jobs will be in the creative sector. Students need to be able to analyze problems and create solutions, collaborate in teams, understand design principles, question and evaluate a constant flood of information, and innovate using emerging technologies. According to the employment giant, Manpower, a significant number of employers are already reporting a “talent mismatch” between skill-sets employers need and workers’ qualifications.

What the arts teach

In their book Studio Thinking, Lois Hetland and Ellen Winner identified valuable thought processes that are inherently used in

arts classes. These include observing, envisioning, innovating, and reflecting. These thinking skills are characteristic of pioneers such as Steve Jobs. Jobs was originally propelled by his interest in electronics, but that was not what made him great. His genius came from the ability to observe and reflect on human behavior and envision innovative products that did not yet exist. Jobs created things we did not yet know we needed, but eventually found we couldn’t live without. In 2002, the Nation Art Education Association published a list of “10 Lessons the Arts Teach” (see sidebar). Unlike other subjects, the arts teach students to seek multiple solutions to problems and to make and support qualitative judgments. The arts teach us to embrace the unknown and increase our ability to adapt. In our ever-shrinking global community, the arts, like travel, expose us to ways of looking at the world that are different from our own. As Katniss Everdeen might agree, one must have more than one arrow in her quiver. Sadly, when test scores dictate where district budgets are spent, these essential learning skills are undervalued. Since the No Child Left Behind Act was implemented in 2001, many of our nation’s school districts have significantly cut their arts programs.

What You Can Do at School

What can parents do to ensure that their children are getting the well-rounded education they need? Let your principals and school board members know you think the arts are important and why. Exercise your right to open enroll your child in a school that offers a broad selection of arts opportunities. Volunteer in the art room. Sponsor an after-school art, music, or drama club. The National Art Education Association and Harvard University’s Project Zero have many arts advocacy resources on their websites. Get involved.

What You Can Do at Home

Project Zero is a 35+ year study devoted to researching the mental processes involved in artistic activity. Their theory was that creative thinking skills are as powerful as the learning of facts and concepts. One of PZ’s initiatives, Artful Thinking (PZartfulthinking.org), has more than a dozen games and thinking routines you can do with your child. Try the “I See, I Think, I Wonder” routine for exploring artwork and other interesting things you see around you. For example, you might use a spider web. Ask your child to describe what he sees. He might say, “I see sticky little strings attached together in a round pattern.” Ask what he thinks about it and why. He

might say, “I think the spider put it on our porch because bugs fly through here and he wants to catch them.” Ask what he wonders about it. He might say, “I wonder if bugs taste good to a spider or if they would like pizza better.” Next, you could have your child imagine he is the spider and draw a plan for catching pizza in his web. These exercises will encourage kids of all ages to be artful thinkers in their daily lives. Last month at the annual Colorado Art Education Assoc. Annual Conference, I had the opportunity to hear the dynamic Dr. Wanda B. Knight, professor at Penn State, speak about how art educators can advocate for the arts as an integral part of our school curriculum. Dr. Knight said something in her keynote speech that I will never forget. She said, “The arts have long been thought of as the icing on the cake. What I want people to know is that the arts are the flour. Without them, there is no cake.” Now, that’s what I’m talking about. S O U R C E : E i s n e r, E . (2002). The Arts and the Creation of Mind, (pp. 70–92). Yale University Press. Available from NAEA Publications. Claudia Lewis is an artist, an art teacher and advocate. She recently earned her MA in Art Education from UNC. For more than 20 years, she has been the owner and director of Lewis Graphics. WHAT GOES INTO MAKING COINS by Steve Carr

OW COINS ARE MADE. A SIX-STEP PROCESS 1. Blanking. Blanks are punched from coiled strips of metal about 13 inches by 1,500 feet in a blanking press. The leftover webbing is chopped up and recycled. The cent (penny) is the only coin stamped onto premade blanks. 2 . Annealing, Washing and Drying. The blanks are heated in an annealing furnace to soften them. Then they are run through a washer and dryer. 3. Upsetting. Next, the good blanks go through an upsetting mill. This raises a rim around their edges. 4 . Striking. Finally, the blanks go to the coining press. Here, they are stamped with the designs and inscriptions that make them genuine United States coins. 5 . Inspecting. Press operators using magnifying glasses spot-check each batch of newly struck coins. 6. Counting and Bagging. A n a u t o m a t i c counting machine counts the coins and drops them into large bags. Forklifts move the pallets of

sealed bags to vaults for storage. Trucks take new coins to Federal Reserve Banks, then to local financial institutions. What are current circulating coins made from? Quarters and dimes are composed of cupro-nickel clad, with a pure copper core and an outer layer of a 75 percent copper, 25 percent nickel alloy. Nickels are made from the same 75-25 alloy, and the penny, once a copper coin, is now composed of copper plated zinc. These pennies are less expensive for the Mint to manufacture, and at 2.5 grams each, weigh about 20% less than the penny previously minted of 95 percent copper and 5 percent zinc, which weighed 3.11 grams. Why is the penny coin larger than the dime coin? What determines the sizes of our coins?

The sizes of United States coins can help you to identify each one, but have nothing to do with their value. The first U.S. five-cent coins (nickels) were made of silver, and were smaller than the ten-cent coins (dimes) in circulation today. You may be interested to know that our coinage system, to a certain extent, has grown out of custom or, in other words, out of daily use. When United States coins were first produced in 1793, our standard coin was the silver dollar. The United States Mint produced the rest of our coins (except the one-cent coin) in a proportionate metallic content to the dollar, with the sizes regulated accordingly. The half-dime (or five-cent denomination) had 1/20th the amount of silver contained in the dollar. Our 10-cent coin contained 1/10th the amount of silver, the quarter-dollar coin (the quarter) contained 1/4th the amount, and the half-dollar coin contained 1/2 the amount. Mint officials recognized the need for a larger five-cent coin because the half-dime was exactly half the size of the dime. This proved to be too small for convenient handling by the public. Adoption of the fivecent coin as we know it today occurred in 1866. The Mint increased the coin’s size and changed its metallic content

from silver and copper to a combination of copper and nickel. Why do some coins have grooves on the edges and why are they there? The dollar, half-dollar, quarter, and 10-cent coin (dime) denominations were originally produced from precious metals (gold and silver). Reeded edges were eventually incorporated into the design of these denominations to deter counterfeiting and fraudulent use of the coins, for example, filing down the edges in an attempt to recover the precious metals. The one-cent (penny) and five-cent pieces (nickels) are considered “minor” coins of the United States and have never contained precious metals. Currently, none of the coins produced for circulation contain precious metals. However, the continued use of reeded edges on current circulating coinage of larger denominations is useful to the visually impaired. For example, the 10-cent (dime) and one-cent coins are similar in size; the reeding of the dime makes it easily identifiable by touch. What is the life span of a coin? The approximate life span of a coin is 25 years. Reference source: www.usmint.gov To obtain more information, contact or stop by Boulder Valley Credit Union. Izzy’s Garden by Isabella Martinez

H

ello. My name is Isabella Martinez. I am a freshman at Boulder High School and have greatly enjoyed the past few months there. As the seasons change, flowers of bright yellow shades bloom and the sky is beginning to brighten with magic. This time of year is spring. In my opinion spring is a time of renewal. It is a new beginning that allows a fresh start to a brand-new year. In a previous article, I wrote about stress and the causes and ways to relieve it. In this issue I would like to give a gift to my readers relating to the past subject. I will express the magic of spring and how community is very much needed to allow a happy lifestyle. Once upon a time, during the beautiful season of fall, Colorful Colorado’s skies were dark for days. Water poured in every direction and puddled in the streets. Water

rushed and poured into flooding creeks. This was the hundred-year flood. These devastating days caused great harm all over Colorado. The water destroyed houses and caused destruction. After the dreadful flood, animals and people gathered and helped each other through the rough times. People of all kinds cleaned the streets and helped to straighten up houses. Volunteers went to parks and trails and helped repair nature’s gifts. I like to think that animals of all kinds hovered and observed as the humans helped to clean the place that everyone shares. The damage was seen all the

way into the winter months, but help kept coming and the community stuck together. The towns soon looked brighter with happiness, and the tears that came with the flood vanished and turned to smiles. Farmers planted crops that provided food, and the animals found peace in the mountains that had recovered. During the flood it was a very stress-filled time, but as I have learned, good things can happen despite stress. I watched a community pull together and express great happiness. This really shows the people wanting to protect each other and do what

they can to help. When there are hard times, we need to be able to depend on others and get through the difficulty in a happy and healthy manner with respect to all. A great positive that was discovered in this negative were new friendships and a community that shows love. As the spring arrives, bushes green as forests grow, flowers bloom, the sun shines, and the land as a whole looks refreshed. As spring has arrived, I feel that the communities smile a little brighter toward each other and seem stronger. There are always times that feel sad, but there is a period of time that will bring joy and melt away the stress. I think that when you witness something very hard, especially if it is happening near you, you realize how important it is to be able to depend on the people around you and look to the future and the good times. When you feel that there is stress in your life, remember this story and think of the outcome. Think about the fresh air that you breath, the clear skies above you, and the people that hold you in their circle of love. Breathe deeply and enjoy all that is wonderful in the world.

Spring Sparkle Secrets

by Sue Van Rayes

A

hh…spring. As we emerge from the winter months, we wake up to the early morning sunlight returning and the smell of blooming flowers poking their heads through to warming earth. In the spring we often feel the urge to cleanse our lives, our bodies, and our beings for a clearer and energized new season of living life to the fullest. As you read through the following words and ideas, take a moment to ponder what needs cleansing in your life. What do you seek to shed this spring to “lighten” up and access the inner freedom we all yearn for?

So often when we think of cleansing, we see visions of ancient yogi’s fasting, or modern health food junkies checking out the newest cleansing trends. This year let us clean out and cleanse what is not serving us in our lives. Let us use the energy of the season of spring to enhance the journey to more radiance and vitality from the inside out. Your spring sparkle comes from a combination of so many components, some of which include of your inner health, your thoughts, how you move your body each day, and your sacred space or home. Check out these spring sparkle secrets and see what you can do to revitalize your spring season. 1. Body Bliss Can you access the bliss your physical body is designed to feel? When you wake up each day are you ready to conquer your life with energy and vitality? If you feel like many people do these days, a little tired, a little sluggish try these health secrets to enhance your energy. Eat with the season. As the leafy greens spring up and the dandelions fill your yard, try finding some ways to cleanse your

diet with some of nature’s spring gifts. In the spring we are designed to eat lighter, darker, and leafier greens, and oh those dandelions do wonders for cleansing the liver. (be sure they are pesticide-free before you eat, or buy at your local health food store) they about your body, your past decisions, your bad habits? Whenever you hear the negative thoughts, try to take note, then flip them around into a positive affirmation as often as you can, to practice unconditional happiness and self-love.

J uice . J u i c i n g d a i l y blesses the body with a huge amount of extra nutrients that are easily absorbed. As you pulverize and strain those veggies in the juicer, you do a huge favor to your digestion. You pour liquid nutrients into your system for a fountain of amazing energy and purification. Reset your energy with a Whole Food lifestyle. This spring try to eat only whole foods for one whole week. Whole food eating means eating food found in its whole form. Avoid processed foods, refined carbohydrates and foods that have an ingredient list. 2. Flip your Script If you are someone who hears your own self-critic loud and clear all day long, full of shame, blame, and self sabotage…it is time to “clean” up your self-talk. Flipping your script means giving your common mental script an overhaul. What are the most common thoughts that bring you down? Are

3. Move it & Shake it One of most effective ways to energize your life is through daily movement. How is your MOJO? Practices such as YOGA, BRISK WALKING/HIKING, and DANCE can move energy in big ways. Get yourself out of inertia this spring and MOVE IT, SHAKE IT, GROOVE IT. Enliven your spirit and up your mojo with some juicy movement of your own. Take walks in the beautiful spring air, inspire yourself with your favorite yoga teacher, or make yourself a new playlist to inspire your daily run. Learn to feel good

in your body through movement you love.

4. Clear out your Space Spring cleaning is not a made up phenomenon. We naturally cleanse during the spring season because it feels so therapeutic to climb out of the winter hibernation into a fresh and clear environment. Getting rid of the old and making room for the new is an important energizer for your space and your experience this spring. But in addition to aesthetics, there are proven health reasons for steam-cleaning carpets, airing out curtains, and the like, noting that the benefits include preventing the spread of germs and keeping allergy symptoms at bay. Clearing out clutter also helps make your environment a happier as well as a healthier place. For a little spring cleaning joy, add some essential oils to your eco-friendly cleaning supplies. ranging and reorganize your sacred space. You are off to a great start for some revitalization and renewal this year. Spring is always an exciting time to start anew, plant our seeds of intention, and watch, tend, and nurture them as the season unfolds. Let’s make it a beauty! Happy spring!

Avery’s Avid-Reader Corner Review by Avery Katz, age 16

Title: The Book Thief Author: Markus Zusac Ages: 12 and up Publisher: Random House Price: $7.21 (Amazon.com)

Summary: The story, which is set in Nazi Germany,

follows the life of a young girl, Liesel, and is narrated throughout by Death. The story begins with a tragic scene on a train that Liesel is riding in order to reach her foster parents. During the ride, her brother (whom she is very close to) passes away due to a rather mysterious cause. Then, during a short funeral procession for her brother at the latter end of the train ride, Liesel spots a book, and picks it up to keep as a memory of her brother. She tenderly picks up the book, which she knows will forever serve as a reminder of her brother. The only kicker here is that Lisesel does not yet know how to read. This will be a pivotal point in the story, as a great deal of time is used discussing Liesel’s journey to literacy through the help of her foster parent, Hans. However, constant threats loom. Being caught with a banned book, or hiding a Jewish boy in one’s home (as Hans does during a period of time), can lead to Liesel not only being whipped, but running the risk of being sent to a concentration camp, or even worse… The only question that remains is whether Liesel and her new family will be able to make it out of WWII alive.

What I Liked About the Book: There were

Use natural dyes to Dye Eggs this easter! red cabbage or Red Onion Skin-pink beet juice-pinkish purple or light red wheat grass-light yellowish green blueberries-blue and purple yarrow-yellow

two primary reasons for which I thoroughly enjoyed this book. First of all, I thought it was very interesting that the book was narrated not by the main character, but by Death itself. I found that this allowed for very interesting plot twists that a traditional narrator could in no way account for. At the same time, it allowed the story to be told from a perspective that would be unmatched by any human person. Second, I loved the use of diversions (short flashbacks), which were repeatedly used throughout the story. These provided a great deal of information for the reader pertaining to the main characters and helped to fill any plot holes that might have been left after significant amounts of reading. Both of these factors made for a very enjoyable and trying tale.

ften we think of manners as proper dining etiquette or how to address your elders, and while these are valid character traits that children of all ages (and adults!) should acquire; good manners are much more than that. As Emily Post, the American author famous for writing on etiquette, stated, “Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter what fork you use.” One of the key foundations of good manners is respect, both respect for others and for ourselves. Beginning at a young age, when children learn the meaning of respect, it can bolster them to make choices to be kind to others, to be aware of the feelings of others, and to lead by example for their peers on the playground and in the classroom. Equally important, children will also learn to make choices to respect themselves, through sticking up for themselves, not allowing bullying, and overall selfcare and hygiene. Other aspects of good manners lead to fostering a solid foundation in your

child’s character, including spoken and written communication, table manners, and general behavior and conduct in all social situations. Character education makes a positive difference in a child’s life, beginning at an early age. When a child learns how to be kind, considerate, and respectful, they can walk through life with more ease and confidence. Such learning is best done through open (and nonviolent) communication with your child, through leading by example with our own words and actions as parents and adults, and through positive reinforcement. Pia Richardson is the owner and main teacher for Molly Manners Boulder, offering fun, interactive, and effective programs for ages 3–17, in a nurturing environment, that empowers children to become confident, considerate, and respectful of themselves and others. Home Away From Home

Traveling to Europe with The Family

Bon Voyage

T

by Jennifer Martin

raveling to Europe can be a great experience for the whole family. We now have a lot of booking choices over the Internet, but we still think a travel agent is the best bet for getting your airfare or booking a hotel or train fare. If something goes wrong, you have someone who can help with problems that can happen. Most Internet travel sites do not offer any support. After you pay for your trip, you are on your own. I know someone who spent 72 hours non-stop on her cell phone waiting to get a return trip revised due to illness. One great option found on the Internet are house or apartment rentals. This might be a great way to appreciate the culture of a place not found in resorts or many hotels. We u s e d H o m e Aw a y. com to take a group of eight to Florence, Italy, for three weeks and then on to Paris for a week. You will need to

make your reservations now for summer trips. The better places get booked up early, and we found a wonderful villa on the outskirts of Florence with 5 bedrooms. Ask the owner a lot of questions and check the reviews out when making your decision. You may consider getting a driver if you are staying out in the country as we did in Florence. Grocery shopping and driving in the cities can be difficult, and in cities like Florence, they have restrict-

ed areas where only taxicabs and registered vehicles are allowed. Tickets are issued electronically, are expensive, and will be added to your rental car when you drop your car off. A driver will save you a lot of time getting around. Most of Europe has great public transportation, but it will take you longer to find your way. For traveling on train, we don’t recommend the overnight trains out of Italy, they are not very clean or comfortable. Smaller airlines are very reasonable, if you keep your luggage to carry-on. Always good to pack light and wash things as you go. Most international flights only allow a 50 lb. suitcase, and overweight bags can get very expensive. Spinners are great bags and easy to get around with, and they now have really lightweight ones that are really sturdy. Check with your home rental if they have a washing machine. Many times you will not get a dryer,

as the Europeans think they are wasteful. Plan on air drying your things. When making your reservation, you may have to send a wire transfer. Shop with your banks to see who has the best rate and make sure they don’t have a padded rate, many do. Get the total cost before you commit. Also, check to see that your credit card or debit card doesn’t add any fees to purchases or cash withdrawls and if they have a limit on withdrawls. Banks here will ad on 1.5% to 5% to order Euros in advance, and you are much better off getting cash when you need it there with your debit card. I used a debit card from First National Bank of Colorado that has no fees using international ATMs. Sit down with your banker and ask them what they offer. Another good thing to bring is an unlocked phone that will work in Europe. Check with your provider and see if you can use one you have. Many of ATT’s phones will work, but you do have to get them unlocked BEFORE you go. Sim cards are inexpensive, and a phone can really come in handy when you are coordinating with a driver, making dinner reservations, and staying in contact with home. Vodaphone is a good choice and will give you calls all through Europe and the USA. Wifi is a good thing to have at your home rental if you have Skype on your iPhone or iPad. That

makes staying in touch very reasonable. A few things to remember when you rent a villa or an apartment is that you may get weekly cleaning help, but most places will not. You should tip your driver or cleaning person at the end of your trip. Be prepared to do some shopping for things like toilet paper, kitchen amenities, etc. Usually kitchens are equipped with enough to do your own cooking but pans and knives may be on the lower side of quality. When you arrive, have them explain how to use the oven, which may be in metric, how to turn on heat or cooling and where the fuse boxes are. Many charming old villas and apartments have very old plumbing, electricity and heating systems. Refrigerators are usually quite small, and you should plan on shopping for food daily, as the produce many times only lasts for a day or two. Europeans are into fresh food, and shopping in the markets is a great way

BOULDER County Kids

to experience the culture of a country. Food quality and water quality are much better these days in Europe, and you will be delighted in the quality of foods in most places. Ask the owner or your driver about local restaurants. They can send you to places off the tourist routes, and you will have wonderful food, better prices and unique experiences. Italy is very family-oriented, and many restaurants have large tables for just that. Download some of the language aps for instant translations of food names and be daring in your choices. Try some new foods. Do be careful in subways and crowded areas. Pickpockets are plentiful, and if you start to feel crowded, move your family away. It’s always good to have everyone’s passports and information copied in case something is lost or stolen. I e-mail a photocopy of everything to myself, so I can always access a copy if I need one.

American Embassies are very helpful if you ever have a problem. Don’t hesitate to contact them. They have volunteer translators that can help you in hospital situations and help with many problems. Travel books are a good resource, and many rentals will have an assortment of books to look over. It is also good to research on the Internet before you go. Many museums have group passes and reserved times, so check into them before you leave town and organize your museum trips in advance. Cities like Paris and Florence can be sold out of times and days. Plus, it will beat standing in line for tickets for hours. You can find many opera, theater and concert tickets online and download them to your iPhone for easy entry. It is good to be at airports early and be prepared for delays. Remember that customs in the US can take a long time to get through,

so allow enough time for a layover to catch a connecting flight. I came back from Italy, and it took two hours standing in line in Minneapolis, and we barely made our connection. The good thing is that most places will let families board first and put them at the head of the line. Also note that airports like the Paris-Charles de Gaulle can push off an hour before the flight and if you miss the bus, you miss the flight. Be early and ask a lot of questions, and ask for help. Please see page 51 for some handy health tips provided by JoHannah Reilly, ND. She has lots of great ideas for things to bring with you to help keep your family healthy and happy. Be prepared and plan early. Have a great trip whereever you decide to go!

WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA? Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist

Q

I have noticed there are a lot of zombie movies out these days. Not only movies but video games, costumes, even dolls. Is there anything going on psychologically in our society that reflects this trend? I wonder why the public even likes it at all.

Signed interested.

A

Everything has meaning. Fads appear and then fade into oblivion. Now there are zombies, where before there were vampires and werewolves. Neanderthals also made an appearance as I remember. But zombies have permeated our culture more deeply than all the other monster metaphors. They appear on TV,

in film, comic books ,and now 5K runs in costume and parades of the undead. The question of “Why zombies?” is difficult to answer because the metaphor is unclear. On the one hand they seem to represent the 99%; the downtrodden masses who can’t seem to get ahead. But they also feed off the living and represent our fears of death. Last winter the Canadian Parliament held a tonguein-cheek debate about their readiness to respond to a “Zombie Apocalypse.” This was a humorous debate about a serious subject, disaster readiness, and it represents how easily we use the zombie metaphor. Apparently zombies appear during times of austerity and are our way of responding to our fears of postapocalyptic anarchy or having our way of life destroyed. Popular culture runs deeper than a teenage girl’s fantasy with vampires or a boy’s delight in zombies. When it’s used as a metaphor in the Canadian Parliament or even on our own government’s CDC website, it signals a connection with our society’s shared unconscious.

I have a friend who yesterday said that she felt that the virtual world creates a kind of zombeism. She went on to describe children walking down the street with ear buds in their ears listening to their iPods instead of church bells and birds. Or mothers happily photographing their children instead of playing with them. And children sitting next to each other, texting each other instead of talking. In the novel I’m reading now, there was a reference made to a zombie army, meaning the soldiers who were unthinking cannon fodder. You are right when you notice how the idea of the zombie has entered the vocabulary of popular culture. You are also correct in wondering what it means. I think it’s a reflection of how we feel alienated and polarized at this time. And perhaps it is a call to respond with kindness instead of anger, with tolerance instead of isolationism, and maybe then the idea of zombies will be relegated to the past.

Q

my good friend lost her father last year and then her husband this year. It appears she is very depressed and has difficulties dealing with everyday life. I have talked to her about seeing a therapist, and she gets angry with me and says, “You think I am handling this badly.” She tries to put words in my mouth and it ends up getting ugly. I really want her to get better, but I don’t know what more to do. Any suggestions?

Signed concerned friend.

Page 22 • Bouldercountykids.com

A

Your friend is in the midst of a crushing amount of grief, having lost both her husband and father recently. Some of the symptoms of grief are irritability and pessimism. Your friend seems to be trying to push you away in the belief that you don’t understand, that no one understands. This increases her sense of isolation and hopelessness. It’s a vicious cycle that allows your friend to feel alone and misunderstood. She’s lucky to have a friend like you who only wishes she would get better. This seems to feel like an impossible expectation for her at this time. Dealing with everyday life may be more than a grieving person can manage. Unless she decided she needs professional help, suggesting therapy might sound like criticism. She said that you thought that she wasn’t handling things well. The truth is she’s handling things to the best of her ability. Please continue to be there for her. Be supportive and be a good listener, even if you’ve heard the story many times before. We can be there for each other. Call her frequently and for short conversations. Things such as remorse or guilt or anger can complicate grief. This can spill over onto the people around the grief, stricken person, to their dismay. You might suggest that your friend attend a grief support group and you could accompany her. Sometimes we need to acknowledge the fact that someone is in a great deal of pain, that some days are worse than others, and that there are no shortcuts on the road back to normal.

Get a Great Workout! PRODUCT REVIEWS by Becca Levin

dmit it—Admit it—once the New Year starts, you want spring to start, too. We’re tired of being cooped up in our homes and having to bundle up in layers of protective covering just to walk to the car. What makes us most excited about this time of year is the idea of a bright, warm outside. But here’s the thing—not a lot of us really go outside anymore. Adults, sure, we have our reasons—cleaning, working, driving, eventually sleeping; but kids? Their day-to-day activities seem to keep them in front of the same entity; the screen. According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition, kids spend an average of at least 7.5 hours a day in front of a screen. Be it a TV, computer, or in recent years, a smart phone, the only muscles getting a workout are thumbs. The same Council also states that only 1 in 3 kids are physi-

cally active each day. This has resulted in a skyrocketing percentage of obesity in children: 12.5 million recorded in 2009–10. Thirty-two states in the nation now have an obesity rate of more than 25%, compared to a whopping zero in the 1970s. Let’s face it, we’ve really dropped the ball when it comes to our health and fitness. Breaks in school will give families a chance to do things together, and for a lot of them, this means travel, which isn’t always the cheapest thing. So how can families looking to find their next big adventure do so on a budget? Better yet, how can we all get ourselves and our kids out and about without breaking the bank?

One answer is geocaching. It started in May 2000, when satellites received a massive upgrade in their global positioning system (GPS) technology. To test it, GPS enthusiasts started hiding boxes with prizes in the woods and posting their coordinates in online communities. In short, the technology worked. People not only found these boxes, but started hiding their own. As of December 2000, there has been a worldwide game of GPS hide-and-seek, and it’s not showing signs of slowing down any time soon. In fact, the company Groundspeak, Inc. formed just to accommodate the 6 million global cache-hunters and their love of a great backyard adventure.

The concept is fairly simple. Choose a cache online that interests you. Load its coordinates in your GPS, and

begin your journey. Be on the lookout for a cache, or container, which could range from the size of a 35mm film canister to a large bucket. Once you find it, record your victory in the container’s logbook, as well as your own. Some caches have presents from other cache-hunters for you to take, so long as you have something just as awesome to trade for it. This is one of many ways to play the game. Some include puzzles to solve, some have multiple coordinates, some aim to bring you somewhere historical, and some are there to get people in touch with one another. Geocaching isn’t America-specific; there are caches all over the world for everyone to enjoy. What are the benefits of geocaching? Families get a chance to embrace nature once again. It brings everyone together. Visiting the cousins doesn’t have to mean the same old routines. It encourages the development of valuable problem solving and social skills and confidence in children. Students can step into a different kind of classroom. Birthday party scavenger hunts can get a major makeover. It helps us connect to a different kind of social network and the opportunity to hear some real tweets. Plus, all that walking is sure to improve health one way or another. Companies like Brand 44 and Grandrabbit’s Toy Shoppe, both Colorado-

BOULDER County Kids based stores, are looking to aid in the pursuit of this hobby. Brand 44 out of Denver carries the Geomate jr,. a kid-specific GPS device that can load all kinds of information about different geocaches, including terrain, difficulty, and cache sizes. Being lanyard-ready and splash-proof makes it all the more qualified for outdoor adventuring. Grandrabbit’s is looking to work with Brand 44 to get Geomate and other outdoor equipment on its shelves. They also carry plenty of gifts to take and trade, like plush items, crafts, and the always awesome terrific treasures. They even carry stamps for letter boxing, (a type of geocaching that involves leaving a personalized stamp in a cache’s logbook rather than item-trading.) As for the caches themselves, Groundspeak’s official geocaching site is free to join, and only $30 a year to upgrade to a premium membership.

Banking tion. Sometimes, it’s the staycation that makes the most of family time and money, turning your hometown into a whole new, exciting world. As with any adventure in the great outdoors, there are safety measures to keep in mind. Always, always, obey the law. Obtain proper permits for caches you wish to leave near historical landmarks. Make sure to leave things animals won’t find tasty. Leave your cache area looking greater than when you got there. And, as always, be safe. With our nation under a health crisis and families looking to be budget-smart this spring, this might get you and your kids in the great outdoors. Geocaching is a step—however big or small—that will bring this gift a little closer to home.

BOULDER County Kids Dancing in the Dark:

Fostering Confidence and Self-Esteem in a Competitive World by Kelly Smith

t’s no secret that we are living in a competition driven society. Whether it be political, economical, or societal, everywhere you look nowadays, you will find some level of competitiveness taking place. Where we as adults have had time to acclimate ourselves with the demands and added pressures competition can bring, children are often left wondering what they need to do in order to measure up. For a child, nothing is worse for the psyche than being told that they aren’t “good enough, or that another child is better than they are. We, as a society, need to stop putting so much pressure on chil-

dren to be number one all the time. Instead, we should be encouraging our children

to set personal goals that are realistic and attainable, and then we must help them to realize these goals. There are ways of accomplishing this while at the same time allowing these children to have fun and express themselves and not feel as though they are being judged. Simple encouragement and positive reinforcement can go a long way in the lives of children. Have you ever found yourself alone at your house or in your room, music blaring, totally uninhibited and dancing? If you haven’t, then you’re missing out. If you have, then you’re probably like the millions of other people in this world who have felt that sense of freedom that comes from being completely carefree, not having to worry about what anyone else might think or say about you. It is at that moment that you are busting out your best Michael Jackson impression that you feel a confidence that may be unfamiliar to you. It is not often that we as humans get to experience this feeling.

Dance class can provide you with this type of self-esteem and confidence, and as a dance teacher at Elite Dance Academy, I would recommend that every child and adult take at least one dance class in their lives in order to experience this feeling firsthand. If you are able to take your child to a dance studio where the instructors are dedicated to the well-being and success of your child, they will be guided in a positive way on how to set goals for themselves and ultimately attain those goals. For a child who might not have the desire to enter into the highly competitive world of sports, dance class can be offered as a wonderful alternative. In dance class, you are not competing against the others in the room, but are setting personal goals for yourself that you wish to master in a given amount of time. It makes no difference to the others in the room whether you fell out of your double pirouette or couldn’t do a perfect switch leap your first try across the floor. Once you set the goal to accomplish those things, and succeed, you will know that anything is possible and any star can be reached. Children who are given the opportunity to express themselves in this healthy way, without the fear of judgment, will hopefully have an easier time expressing themselves as adults. Dance class provides this type of environment for children. Here, they are allowed to be themselves and let go of any stress that might be bringing them down. They are free to just

forever. She told me, “I love to dance because I feel invincible, like I’m dancing in the dark, like I can fly.”

Kelly Smith began dancing at the age of four years old. She has been a dance instructor for the past twelve years and is currently teaching dance at Elite Dance Academy in Broomfield, Colorado. She has studied dance theory and dance choreography at Marymount Manhattan College in NYC. Kelly holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. live through their movement and connect their mind to their body and to their soul. There are many benefits that dance provides, but the most important is that it helps to build confident, self-assured children, who in turn become confident, self-assured adults. It allows for mistakes and the setting and attaining of personal goals. Dance class can make a timid, doubtful child feel like they are on top of the world when they are finally able to master that step or routine they have been working on all year. I asked an eight-year-old in my jazz 2 class why she loved to dance, and her answer completely moved me and further solidified my belief that dance is truly one sport that helps build a sense of confidence that will remain within you

Boulder

From JoHannah Reilly ND, LAc, Boulder

T

raveling with children can be great fun when you are prepared. Hope for the best but plan for the unexpected.

Food.

Always bring snacks that can double for a meal. Crackers and refined carb snacks may fill them up, but blood sugar crashes will leave you with some grumpy elves. Bring protein that your kids enjoy—a boiled egg, hot dogs, turkey / chicken wraps, and jerky will keep blood sugar stable, helping little ones stay strong. Carrots and celery with nut butters are yummy. Pack snacks in a location that is easy to get to.

www.advantageelectrolysis.com Electrolysis and laser hair removal. Fifteen-minute to one-hour treatments with 20 years experience. $10 off first visit. Hours: Mon-Th: 10 am-5 pm. Call for appointment. See ad.

Hydration.

Water alone is not enough to stay hydrated, especially when flying. Bring vitamin C packets with electrolytes, they are so convenient to carry, and you can refill your empty water bottle after you are through security. Try to avoid drinking airplane water. I have been warned by commercial pilots that the quality is questionable. I also recommend a clear, sweet, non-caffeine drink, like ginger ale, which is yin in Chinese medicine, to help off set the very yang and dehydrating effects of flying.

What to do?

Your children need activities that can keep them occupied on long trips and during unexpected delays. A good book to read for older children, coloring books and books of puzzles or mazes are great, and my daughter’s favorite—Rainbow loom is the best! The trick is to have these things collected in small containers that are easily available—a ziplock bag with crayon and coloring book together and packed where you can grab them. If your child is old enough to pack their own carry on, they can decide where things go when they want to grab them.

Clothes.

You may want to arrive with your children wearing their holiday best, but comfort and the weather need to be considered. Remember to check the weather of your destination so that you are prepared. Too many layers can be complicated for airplanes but a comfy jacket and a warm hat are great when the AC is on. I usually wear a ski hat on the plane to Hawaii! Having an extra outfit in case of accidents is always a good idea, even with older children, since things may get spilled.

Smell what’s cooking in the log house, chat with the blacksmith, and do hands-on oldfashioned activities with costumed volunteers. Call Sheryl Kippen at (303) 776-8848 or please e-mail skippen@bouldercounty.org for more information or check out www.bouldercountyopenspace.org April 27—Boulder Tulip Fairy & Elf Festival for all ages, from 1 to 5 pm, at the 1300 block of Pearl Street. Spring officially arrives in downtown Boulder when the beautiful, colorful Tulip Fairy, along with pint-sized fairies and elves, parade around the Pearl Street Mall welcoming the tulips. This much beloved springtime tradition features performances and activities for girls and boys and more than 15,000 tulips that adorn the world-renowned Pearl Street Mall throughout the spring season.
