Not Less–Just Different

y son Bennett and I are big movie watchers and we like to share our favorite films with each other. A while back Bennett made a recommendation for a movie that was made for HBO and at the time didn’t receive much publicity. He told me it is a semi-biographical film titled, Temple Grandin, starring Claire Danes as Grandin. The movie was released in 2010 and is about a real life person, Temple Gradin, who is currently a professor at Colorado State University. She holds a Ph.D. in Animal Sciences. Early on in her childhood she was diagnosed with

Lincoln Kids! autism and her mother was told that Temple would probably have to be institutionalized for the rest of her life. The movie is about how, thanks to her dedicated mother, some inspiring teachers, and strong personal courage, Temple worked to overcome the obstacles given her to become not only a Professor, but an inventor, a best selling author and a highly regarded consultant to the livestock industry. In the May issue of Time Magazine is an Ad for Colorado State University featuring Ms. Grandin so apparently the word is getting out about her. At the High School special needs school she attended I loved the term they used to describe their students, “Not less–Just different”. I’m not sure your kids will enjoy the movie but I found it to be quite inspirational. It is rated TVPG. In the past month Lincoln Kids has come into contact with a couple of neat people with programs created for kids who have some unique challenges in life. See her ad and article on page 9. Speaking of art I should also mention about the Mourning Hope Grief Center’s Summer Art Workshop for children. This program is for children who have experienced a serious illness or the loss of someone significant in their lives. See their article on page 38. This is our big summer camp/activites issue so be sure to check out all the cool stuff going on for your kids. With the high price of gas there is no reason to travel very far to find great family activities. You’ll have to look through the paper for all the “neat stuff” going on but here’s a few activities worth checking out. On June 11th is BryanLGH’s 15th Annual Health and Safety Fair. This event

Scouting Program Keeps Up With The Times

ave you ever thought that one day in the future we could have Boy Scouts that are robots? That probably won’t happen but today we have Boy Scouts learning about robots. If you think robotics is only used in the highest-level technology companies, think again. You probably have multiple robotic units in your own home. The field of personal robotics is growing as we look to technology to do some of the jobs that we don’t

want to do. There are robots that vacuum, mow the lawn, and clean the pool. But don’t stop at personal robotics—almost every aspect of agriculture, military combat, and waste containment involves robotic technology. To earn the badge, Scouts will spend approximately 10 hours designing a robot and keeping log books, among other requirements. This merit badge is part of the BSA’s new curriculum emphasis on STEM: science,

Have a “Ball” at the Lincoln Children’s Museum

his summer, the Lincoln Children’s Museum will be featuring an interactive exhibit children are sure to enjoy. This new exhibit, called Ball Works, is being built by museum staff and will be open June through August in the museum’s Discovery Gallery. Ball Works is an exhibit for all ages. Children and adults will be able to engineer and experiment with acceleration, gravity, motion, and velocity. “What makes this exhibit different is children will be able to control and manipulate how the ball moves,” said museum Director of Marketing and Operations, Ryan Gross.

Ball Works will have multiple interactive exhibits where children and adults can place a ball and watch it travel through a creation they have made. Some areas will test timing and speed. At one exhibit, children will place a ball on a ramp and it will travel through a loop and then into one of many buckets. “Depending on where the ball is placed will determine which bucket the ball will land in,” Gross said. his is a song we sometimes sing with children when they are here for guided hikes. Try it to the tune of ‘The Farmer in the Dell’. It is about my favorite subject: plants! Now, I know plants are not everyone’s passion, but I want to invite you to think a bit about how amazing they are and how much we depend on them. There’s a seed. Maybe you have even planted some in your garden this Spring. A seed can be tiny, but inside is a new plant and a little food to get it going. It drops to the soil, and if it has good enough soil, and some space, and gets rain and sunshine, it puts down roots. The roots take up the water and nutrients the plant needs to grow and also hold it in place. Then the plant sends up a tiny stem and one or two leaves. If it continues to get enough rain and sunshine, and nothing eats or squishes it, that stem grows. The stem is like a pipe that carries water and food around the plant and holds up the leaves. Those leaves do the work of the plant: they make food. With the help of chlorophyll, the pigment that makes leaves green, they are able to do a magic trick. They can use the sun’s energy, with water and carbon dioxide, to make food and oxygen. Almost all living

seeds move to a good place to grow. Those juicy fruits may tempt animals to eat them and spread their seeds in their scat, or hide that fruit for winter and then forget where it is hidden. ou don’t have to have a big garden to enjoy the tasty benefits of fresh garden veggies. As a matter of fact you don’t even need a back yard! These days many people are rediscovering the simple method of growing vegetables in flower pots. All you need is a large pot, some potting soil and a spot in the sun.

Chris Campbell, of Campbells Nursery, offered a suggestion on a tomato variety you might want to consider. She recommends Husky Cherry Red tomatoes because they are selfsupporting and don’t require a cage. Other veggies easily grown are Radishes, Fingerling Potatoes, and for food and beautiful follage try Bulls Blood Beets.

Family-Friendly Community Arts Afternoon at the LUX

his summer, as a great way to finish out the season and jump back into the school season, enjoy some family fun at the LUX Center for the Arts’ biggest community event of the year: Community Arts Afternoon. On Sunday, August 7th from 1-4pm, the LUX Center will host our annual family-friendly day of hands-on art activities, live music and demonstrations. This event is free and open to the public. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the weather while creating hands-on art projects with your loved ones. Activities will be spread throughout our two-story building and parking lot. Community Arts Afternoon is an afternoon for you to explore your passion for the arts! Have a chance to sculpt in clay to create figurines and sculptures with ceramics instructors. Move into our print studio to discover printmaking! Everyone will have the opportunity to use one of our printing presses to hand print their own postcard. Work with LUX Artist-in-Residents and learn about the beautiful effects that

watercolor paints create while painting a bookmark. Enjoy the weather outdoors while tie-dying a t-shirt. Learn various rubber band and tying techniques to establish various effects. (Please bring your own white tee shirt to tie-dye, or you can purchase one for $5 at event). Enjoy local live music, dancing and pottery wheel demonstrations going on in our parking lot. And for some extra fun and flair, be sure to get a henna tattoo or your face painted by local artists! All of these activities are free and open to the public. So at the end of the summer, after you have done all of your vacationing, come join other families from the Lincoln area from 1-4pm at the LUX Center for the Arts August 7. etween Lincoln and Omaha lies one of my favorite places for outdoor recreation, E.T. Mahoney State Park. As if there wasn’t already a ton of fun things for a family to do now they have added a new 9 hole Disk Golf course. So what is disc golf? Disc Golf (or frisbee golf, or frolf) is an outdoor, competitive game where players attempt to throw frisbee discs into a basket or onto a target object or zone. The object is to complete each course, or “hole,” by moving from start to finish in the least number of throws possible. To state the obvious, it’s golf played with a frisbee instead of a ball and clubs! Disc Golf is inexpensive, and physically accom-

Art Planet Offers Creative Fun for Children with Special Needs

hildren with special needs often have trouble expressing themselves, but one form of communication can help transcend all barriers – art. A new kids’ art studio opening in Lincoln aims to nurture the creative spirits of specialneeds children, and along the way help them gain confidence, develop social skills, and of course create their very own works of art. The studio, Art Planet, is the creation of artist and educator Tamara Weber, who got the idea while talking with a parent of a child who has Asperger’s syndrome. “There just aren’t a lot of creative programs in Lincoln that are geared towards children who have special needs, such as those on the autism spectrum,” says Weber, who has a Master of Education in Special Education and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. “Art Planet is a place where these students can

explore the creative universe in a way that’s developmentally appropriate and also a lot of fun.” So, why the name Art Planet? According to Weber, kids with special needs (specifically, those on the autism spectrum) have long been described as being “in a world of their own.” “If they really are in their own world,” she explains, “why not their own planet? Why not embrace that? At Art Planet, being in your own world isn’t a dismissive phrase. Here, they can get out of the house, interact with others, and enjoy social and creative outlets where their expressive side is welcomed and encouraged.” Art Planet is currently accepting enrollment for “Three Week Adventures in Art” classes and summer camps running June through August. Students up to age 21 will get the chance to try their hand at cartooning, painting and even explore papermaking and clay. Class sizes are

limited to three or five participants, depending on age and ability, allowing each child to receive plenty of individual attention.

Art Planet takes pride in offering classes to provide opportunities for a wide range of students. The “Partners and Picasso” program is designed for students and their caregivers who will come to class with them each time to provide support during the art-making process. Students without special needs who want to enroll in the Peer Mentoring Option will receive quality art instruction while fostering the development of age appropriate social skills in the creative setting. Weber is also available for one-on-one instruction tailored to a student’s area of interest and personal and educational goals. “I am confident Tamara Weber is going to provide a wonderful experience for children and adolescents

with unique learning and social needs the opportunity to express themselves through art. Art experiences as a means to develop an increasing awareness and knowledge of skills for developing social relationships with peers and adults represents a novel approach that benefits exploration by families. aybe I should have named this article “Fun With Peanut Butter”. I recently learned about a cozy cafe in New York’s Greenwich Village named Peanut Butter & Company. They advertise that their cookbook includes over 80 recipes using peanut butter as one of the ingredients. They include desserts, nutritious snacks like Baked Apple, and even offer a recipe for a sandwich called a Peanut Butter BLT. I have not seen the cookbook but it sounded like fun to me so I decided to try adding peanut butter to a few of our favorite recipes. Try them! We like them!

Double Chocolate/ Peanut Butter Pie 1 Chocolate Graham Cracker Pie Crust 2 1/2 c. milk 2/3 c. peanut butter, can use chunky if preferred 2 small packages Instant

Chocolate Pudding mix, we use sugar free pudding Cool Whip for topping, optional Combine milk and peanut butter in mixing bowl. Add pudding mix to ingredients in mixing bowl and mix together with electric mixer, at low speed for two minutes (until thick). Spoon into pie shell and chill for two hours. Serve topped with a dollop of Cool Whip.

Peanut Butter and Chips Dessert Loaf Preheat oven to 375˚. Grease bottom of loaf pan or 9 x 5 baking dish. 2/3 c. peanut butter 1/4 c. cooking oil 2 eggs 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 1 c. water 1-14 oz. box Pillsbury Banana Quick Bread mix 1 c. chocolate chips Mix peanut butter, cooking oil, two eggs, vanilla extract and one cup water in large mixing bowl until well blended. Then stir Quick Bread Mix into the bowl of ingredients. Add chocolate chips and stir all ingredients together until combined. Spoon batter into loaf baking pan or baking dish. Bake 45 to 50 minutes, in preheated oven, until done.

Creamy Peanut Butter Snacks 20 vanilla wafer cookies 1/4 c. creamy peanut butter 1 banana cut into 10 slices 1 1/2 c. vanilla ice cream Spread the bottom of 10 vanilla wafers with peanut butter. Add a banana slice on top of the peanut butter. Layer each with one tablespoonful of ice cream and cover the ice cream with a second vanilla wafer. Press together to make a sandwich. Freeze for one hour before serving.

Cool Peanut Butter/ Banana Milkshake 1 whole banana, sliced 2 T peanut butter 4 scoops ice cream (about 1 cup) 1 c. milk cinnamon (optional) Place first four ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Makes one large or two small servings. Sprinkle top of each milkshake with cinnamon. Editors Note: I just love peanut butter. My favorite sandwich is peanut butter and honey! My favorite brand of peanut butter is Smuckers Natural Creamy. I like it because there are no added sugars or hydrogenated oils. It’s worth the stirring! Mark

n January, 2011, the US Surgeon General issued a new Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding. The report states that many mothers choose to breastfeed their babies, but experience a lack of support from their families, friends, health care providers, employers and policy makers. As part of the national Call to Action, MilkWorks, a community breastfeeding center in Lincoln, was chosen as one of eight projects to demonstrate what breastfeeding support looks like in our country. A local photographer, Erica Thompson from Images for a Lifetime, documented the activities at MilkWorks. These photos were then included in the web cast and appear in the 100 page document that was released by the US Surgeon General. MilkWorks, a non-profit organization founded in 2001, is governed by a board of directors. The mission of MilkWorks is to create a healthier community by helping

On June 4th and July 16th volunteers are hosting two fundraising events to assure that MilkWorks remains a resource in the Lincoln community for new families. A Milk & Cookies Cocktail Party and Dessert Tasting will be held Saturday, June 4th, at the home of Tim and Patti Gardner in the beautiful Southfork neighborhood.

The event will feature a signature milk-based cocktail and signature cookie along with a variety of desserts and beverages. Tickets are $40 each. Families are also invited to a Festival at Prairie Hill Learning Center on Saturday morning, July 16th. This outdoor event will include childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s activities, light refreshments and music by Curt Bright of the String Beans. Cost is $15 per family. Stephaney is a sweet and charming 16 year old girl. She loves shopping, jewelry and playing with make-up. She enjoys listening to music and hanging out with friends. She is an energetic gal who likes to stay active playing sports, including her favorites, swimming, volleyball and basketball. She also enjoys baking in her free time; however, her favorite foods are macaroni, cereal and oatmeal. Stephaney states that one of her favorite things about school is learning. She admits that she

does struggle a bit with Math and English. Her favorite subjects are Science and History. When Stephaney grows up, she would like to become a pediatric nurse. Stephaney describes herself as pretty and kind. When asked what she would like in a family, she said that she wants a family that â&#x20AC;&#x153;doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hit kidsâ&#x20AC;? or is â&#x20AC;&#x153;meanâ&#x20AC;?. As most teenagers, she would also like a family that allows her to have some personal space and freedom. Stephaney would do best in a home that could provide consistency, structure, supervision and appropriate modeling regarding building healthy relationships. It will be important that Stephaney continue to have contact with her siblings and that these relationships continue to grow and remain a part of her life. ith summer approaching our house, like just about any other, is in the planning and organization mode. We are looking at what camp to enroll the children in and what our family vacation may be. But the real challenges are the day-to-day changes that occur during the summer. The summer break for children, although needed and necessary, has the potential to throw our delicately balanced life into chaos. Some of the challenges are clear-cut with the type of summer supervision children need. When transportation to different activities is needed one great option to consider is an in-home provider or sitter but make sure to take all the measures necessary to ensure you make the safest and most competent choice possible. Request that they consent to, or provide you with, a background check. In my experience, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve found that talking to other parents about their sitters can tell you a lot about their character and skill-levels. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve even found wonderful providers at the local universities. Check references and ask questions about their decision-making skills, organization and reliability. Look for qualities that make that person qualified to take care of your children. In-home care can be a great option for some fami-

lies. (We have had wonderful experiences.) You may find that the value of having children at home and active with their siblings and in the neighborhood builds their connections to others in the community. They can also pitch in around the house during the day by completing simple chores and developing their responsibilities around the home. I try to build in time during the day to make unannounced returns to the home to check in on how things are going. I also ask the children about their day. I become concerned if the children have changes in personality or show great resistance to having this person care for them. You also want to talk to children about stranger danger, boundaries and the importance of telling an adult if they are concerned about any of these things. You should review these same safety issues with any provider you choose, be it an inh o m e , agency or home-based provider. Another option for summer supervison, for short periods of time â&#x20AC;&#x201D; up to three or four hours â&#x20AC;&#x201D; is to consider using your middle school or high school aged

child. Although this can be a fine solution for some families, age alone should be the last factor to consider when making this decision. Make sure your child demonstrates strong organizational and responsibility skills by handing in all homework on time, doing chores without being asked or communicating with you about scheduling plans from their activities. They should also be trustworthy. Children who adhere to expectations, take responsibility for their actions and communicate about these challenges are demonstrating these attributes. If you decide that your child is ready for this responsibility make sure you discuss daily expectations

with all your children. Make sure they have activities planned to help structure their time. Have your child complete a baby-sitting class and know when to call 911 for help. Have all emergency contact information in one

location and be aware of adult neighbors who will be home if needed. Follow up each day of supervison by asking how things went and attempt to problem solve if there were struggles. Above all be sure to have a fun and safe summer!

The Dog Days Of Summer by Alisa Eichorn, Director of Education & Volunteers Capital Humane Society

t’s that time of year when the weather is hot and so are the animals. Swimming pools and lakes are busy places for people to go during the summertime. But, don’t forget about your pets! When it’s hot, it’s important that you give your pets some extra love. Here are some tips to make sure that you are doing all you can to keep your pets safe from those sizzling temperatures during the dog days of summer. Our pets get awfully thirsty when it’s hot outside. It’s important to make sure you have enough water for them, especially if they’re going to be outside for an extended period of time. Cats and dogs have very few sweat glands, and most of those are in the footpads. Your cat or dog’s way of cooling is by panting, with his tongue hanging out by at least a mile, to show he’s hot and ready for a gulp of H20. Keep in mind not to give your animal too much water. Instead, give him small amounts of cool water to drink. Moving cool air across his tongue is their only means of lowering his body

temperature. Find your pet a cool place to stay during those warm days. If they are outside for long periods of time, consider giving them access to a baby pool with a safe amount of water that won’t be too much for them. Clean the pool out on a regular basis, so mosquitoes don’t visit the area. Your pets should be on heartworm medication from at least March to November, or the entire year. Also make sure there is plenty of shade for your pets to find. Don’t leave your pets in your vehicle when it’s really hot. They can over-

heat in a matter of minutes and it can sometimes result in death. During the summer, it is best to play outdoors with your pets and walk your dogs during the cooler part of the day. That way you can avoid overheating or over exhaustion of you and your pets. If you notice them looking for shade and taking a break while playing or walking, that’s a sign that they need to stop. When it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for our pets. Heat related illnesses and death are more common with people during hot humid days and our

pets are at an even greater risk. If your animal becomes overheated, you should seek veterinary care immediately. Be on the lookout for heavy panting, red mucous membranes, a rapid pulse, a high temperature and if the legs, nose and ears feel hot. One final tip to keep in mind is do not shave their fur if it’s not normally clipped. What looks like a hot heavy coat to humans is actually good insulation for a pet. A healthy, wellgroomed coat actually keeps heat out, protects delicate skin from sunburn and regulates body temperature.

s we bask in these brief spring days of exceptional warmth, our thoughts naturally turn to summer. For families, this is a time to slow down, spend more time together and, hopefully, read, read, read! The ever-helpful librarians at Lincoln City Libraries would like to offer ideas for some excellent books for children from toddler to teen. Our theme this summer is One World, Many Stories and the following suggestions all offer children glimpses into the diversity of our world and its many cultures. Picture books offer a visual, as well as textual experience for young readers. The soft watercolor illustrations in Fly Free! by Roseanne Thong, illustrated by Eujin Kim Neilan feature a look at the Vietnamese countryside and village life in this gentle story of Mai, a young Vietnamese girl, who feeds the caged sparrows in a temple, starting a series of good deeds that eventually come back to her. Totally different in tone is Dear Primo: A Letter to My Cousin written and illustrated by Duncan Tonatiuh. Two cousins, one in the United States and one in Mexico, share their experiences through the year, finding much in common and hoping for a face-to-face meeting on each other’s turf.

Everywhere the Cow says “Moo!” by Ellen Slusky Weinstein, is a delightful book that provides different words for animal sounds (with correct pronunciations at the back of the book). The fun-to-say animal sounds are in English, Spanish, French and Japanese. Poetry is a universal language and veteran author Lee Bennet Hopkins has collected a set of beautiful poems by favorite authors featuring large watercolors of children from different cultures, but experiencing universal emotions in Amazing Faces. Despite its strict structural rules, the haiku format works remarkably well for a variety of subjects, Won Ton: A Cat Tale Told in Haiku by Lee Wardlaw and illustrated by Eugene Yelchin features a homeless cat that takes the reader through his life in an animal shelter to his loving adoption. What a Wonderful World, by George David Weiss and Bob Thiele, contains vibrant illustrations by Ashley Bryan which accompany the words of the song made famous by Louis Armstrong. Enjoy looking for Louis in the illustrations and play a CD of the song for full effect! Those just launching into chapter books, will enjoy, The Dream Stealer by Sid Fleischman featuring a resourceful Mexican girl tries to recover her dream from the Dream Stealer. Children’s literature is full of inspirational books portraying the strength of children in war time. Unfortunately these harrowing tales have taken place in many places and throughout human history. Here’s a sampling of titles we’ve recently received for upper elementary or middle school students. In Annexed, author Sharon Dogar tells the story of Anne Frank’s family ordeal through the eyes of Peter, also hiding in a home in Amsterdam with the Frank family. Salva’s story of survival in Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya

in A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park is based on a true story of a young boy, separated from his family, like so many other children in the Sudanese civil war. Shooting Kabul by N. H. Senzai takes place in San Francisco in 2001. Fadi and his family have escaped Taliban controlled Afghanistan, but have accidently left Fadi’s younger sister behind in a refugee camp in Pakistan. Upper elementary-age fans of fantasy and adventure will enjoy Wolven by Di Toft, a novel set in England. Twelve-year-old Nat befriends what he thinks is a rough mutt and discovers he is a shape shifter who must help him foil a dastardly plot involving werewolves.

Ancient Egypt is a source fascination for many young readers and there are many marvelous wonders in Pharaoh’s Boat by David L. Weitzman. Meticulously created, hieroglyphic-like illustrations along with a detailed text reveal the riddle of reconstructing a regal boat commissioned by Cheops, the Pharaoh, to journey into the afterlife.

New Collaborative Kids Camp Across Lincoln by Natalie Nelson, LUX Center for the Arts, Education Director

very exciting new weeklong kids camp that allows your child to explore science, technology, art, history, nature and zoology is coming! Camp Across Lincoln is a community wide collaboration of five Lincoln top hot spots for families and kids; Lincoln Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Museum; Lincoln Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Zoo; LUX Center for the Arts; Morrill Hall; and Pioneers Park Nature Center. Each day, during the week of July 24-29, your child will learn and play at a different location. This is such a unique, creative and well-rounded educational camp for children ages 6-9 years of age. There is nothing like it in Lincoln where so many inspiring organizations are coming together to provide high-quality creation,

exploration, and learning. During this camp, your child will spend time at the Lincoln Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Museum exploring science projects and technology. Then they will go on a wild zoofari at Lincolnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Zoo where they will experience animal encounters. Duck Pluck At Lincoln’s Childrens Zoo – August 5th …It’s a Great Night…A Great Price…For A Great Cause.

ities for Lincoln’s youth. Where else will your family entertainment dollar go so far? Bring all the kids, even the neighbors children, and enjoy unlimited train rides, interact with the animals, win wonderful prizes, and enjoy activities especially planned for the evening. The pond will be filled with rubber ducks, and each ticket provides one chance to win prizes donated by Lincoln’s business community. Last year’s prizes included bicycles, restaurant meals, rounds of golf, children’s and adult’s fishing gear, car washes, skating passes and much

more. Come see what this year’s prize pond will include. In addition to all this, there will be a silent auction. You may place a bid anytime while you are at the Zoo the evening of the event. If you win a bid you will be able to take your prize home with you at the end of the evening. Last year’s auction items included; a week’s rental in Arizona, office furniture, a Barbeque grill, Husker Quilt, garden trellis and plants, gift baskets, a weekend retreat package, and much more. This event has been organized by the Lincoln West Optimist Club

and proceeds will be used to fund the many activities in support of Lincoln’s youth. The club operates the Van Horn Lodge at Branched Oak Lake, which provides a place for many youth groups to meet, fish, play Frisbee golf, picnic, and camp out. Grief Camp for Bereaved Families at the Lincoln Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Zoo. Saturday, June 11

.U.G.S. (Helping Us Grieve Successfully) is a one day grief camp for youth, ages 5 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 18, and their caregivers who have experienced the death of someone significant in their lives. This year the camp will be held on Saturday, June 11th at the Lincoln Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Zoo from 9:00 a.m. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 3:30 p.m. The camp theme is based on a book by Barbara Betker McIntyre titled Jungle Journey: Grieving & Remembering Eleanor the Elephant. The story is based on Eleanor the Elephant who for many years watched over the jungle at night so that all the other animals could safely sleep. When Eleanor becomes ill and dies, each animal responds differently to her death and mourns in their own ways. All camp participants will appre-

n order to foster emotional healing and encourage individual creativity, Mourning Hope Grief Center’s Art From Our Heart program partners skilled, local artists with children who have experienced the serious illness or death of someone significant in their lives. “Sometimes words are too difficult, but children can often express their feelings through

other means, such as art,” said Carly Runestad, executive director. “By working in tandem with professional local artists and trained grief facilitators, children will gain valuable insight and understanding regarding their personal grief journey.” This is the fifth summer Art From Our Heart has been offered in the community to children in

My mom and I are very close. We watch scary movies together, go on humongous rollercoasters with each other and she’s the one who nurses me back to health at the drop of a hat.
