Some facts about Giraffes Giraffes, are the tallest mammals on Earth. They live in Africa were they wander around looking for tasty leaves in the tree tops. A giraffe’s legs are taller than many humans—about 6 feet (1.8 meters). Giraffes can run as fast as 35 miles (56 kilometers) an hour over short distances and 10 miles (16 kilometers) an hour over longer distances. They like to walk about in the open grasslands in small groups of six. They have a very long tongues! —21-inches (53-centimeters). To drink at a water hole they must spread their legs and bend down in an awkward position. They need to watch out for hungry lions who would try to catch them. Giraffes only need to drink once every several days; they get most of their water from the plants they eat. Female giraffes give birth standing up. That means their babies fall to the ground.
