Good oral hygiene is essential to living a long and healthy life. A proper cleaning routine prevents the bacteria and germs in the mouth from traveling to other parts of the body. While everyone knows the importance of brushing and flossing on a daily basis, there is still a good chance that you are not doing everything necessary to get your mouth as clean as possible. These are the four most common oral hygiene mistakes everyone needs to avoid.

Skipping the Mouthwash It is nearly impossible to kill all the bacteria in your mouth while brushing your teeth. Your mouth may seem clean, but there is almost guaranteed to be some lingering bacteria. This is why it is vitally important to use mouthwash on a regular basis. In addition to freshening your breath, mouthwash also works to kill dangerous bacteria in the mouth. Use mouthwash roughly 30 minutes after brushing to get the best results.

Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, but it is still capable of breaking down. Eroding enamel is one of the leading causes of stained teeth and tooth sensitivity. These problems are far more likely to occur if you use too much force while brushing your teeth. The extra friction essentially causes the enamel to wear away over time. Keep this from happening by using gentle strokes when brushing.

Using Toothbrush Too Long There is a very good chance that you have been using the same toothbrush for most of the year. Most dentists recommend getting a new toothbrush every two to three months. The main reason for the recommendation is the bacteria accumulation on the toothbrush. If bacteria are allowed to sit on a toothbrush for too long, then it starts to infect the mouth while you are brushing.

Avoiding the Dentist Nobody wants to spend time at the dentist, but it is a necessary part of life. Making regular visits to the dentist is just as important as your routine checkups with your doctor. In addition to keeping your teeth strong, these routine visits will let the dentist spot and treat minor problems before they turn into serious issues. It is recommended to visit the dentist at least once a year.
