Interview with
Josh Tyrrell
Freelance audio engineer based in Cardiff
Hi Josh, tell me about your job and how long you’ve been doing it! I’m a freelance audio engineer and I record and produce music in and around Cardiff! It’s always been a passion of mine; from playing in bands to writing and recording my own music to helping friends out. This then led to studying at ATRIuM school of creative and cultural industries in Cardiff and then to working freelance! Which studios are you working out of at the moment? I’m working a lot in ‘Machine Rooms’ in Cardiff with a guy called John Rea. He’s won two BAFTA awards in the ‘Best Original Music Category. I also undertake work at Rockfield in Monmouth and a few other studios in Wales. Working at Rockfield is cool as bands like The Stone Roses, Black Sabbath and Oasis have recorded there. Queen recorded Bohemian Rhapsody there too, which is amazing! Do you have a certain genre of band you like to produce? Working freelance has given me the freedom to choose who I want to work with and what projects to undertake. It also means that a lot of different

styles of musicians approach me and I’m always eager to try new things. A lot can vary with music production genre to genre so it’s always interesting! So what has the last year been like for you? It’s been great! And I’ve been lucky to be involved with lots of different things including working with The Darkness on their latest album, Miles Kane, and Lower Than Atlantis. What’s in store for you in 2013? I’m going to keep working hard and hopefully be involved with some exciting things this year! All the best from us! Thanks Josh Thanks mate! Contact Josh:

MUSIC

‘NO TIME THIS TIME’. It’s such a unique name. Who chose that name for the band? Our manager at the time chose the name. It is an old song from The Police and we felt it rolled off the tongue nicely. Where do you draw your inspiration? We all have slightly different influences. Pete West, the bass player, playe and myself were into bands such as Foo Fighters, Black Stone Cherry and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Chris Cousins the drummer was into a bit heavier stuff like Limp Bizkit, You Me At Six, Dropkick Murphys. The vocalist, Dan Mcfarlane was into a bit of everything really, Led Zeppelin, all the way through to this current ghetto glitch and dubstep stuff. I especially like the song ‘Saviour’ ‘Saviou and ‘Life story’. Who came up with that concept? Those two songs, I wrote the melody one day and then took the idea to the band. I think we had just seen The King Blues play and were right into that punk rap rock sort of style at the time, and then came Life Story. With ‘Saviour’, Dan always liked singing about girls and his love life. Aren’t all great songs about that topic? We wanted to create a story in this song and get a real live sound for it. What makes you stand out from other indie rock bands? We find telling people who we sound like is impossible. That is why we stand out, because our songs are all totally original and not copying any famous chord progressions or melodies.

GOALS
SETTING AND PLANNING
GOALS ARE S.M.A.R.T
Specific
S
Goals should be defined and exact. It should have a value, clear and unambiguous able to tell you why it is important. E.g. An aim to work as a social media consultant
Measurable
M
Goals should have a scale of measurement of success. It must have a system, which will indicate whether or not you are having success or going backwards. It’ll answer the question ”How do I know?” E.g. I know I’m doing well in my degree because of consistent high grades.
Attainable
A
Goals should be attainable or in simply realistic. Being stretched is a good thing but being pushed to do impossibilities is meaningless. It’ll only frustrate you and damage confidence. E.g. Aiming for first class honours setting aside little time for studying.
Relevant
R
Goals should be relevant. It should matter to the cause and other related goals for it to mean something to you E.g. Doing a business related course to be an entrepreneur.
Timely
T
Goals should be TimeBound. There should be a limit of time spent on tackling goals with a deadline. A time frame giving a target date of supposed completion. Sometimes it is not possible to give an exact figure but setting one emphasizes the need to finish. E.g. After completing my degree I will gain experience working for four years before I setup my own enterprise.
Goal setting is a part of life, which we all have to do from the simplest thing as deciding the time to wake up the next day to do grocery shopping to choosing the University course, which will lead you to your dream career. The process of setting goals will determine where you want to go in life and will ultimately be a direction of where to place and concentrate your efforts in achieving that goal. It also makes you aware of distractions, which could make you lose focus and lead you away from your goal. Text: Rogers Sombe
