At ECO-B, new products and services prove that sustainability and eco product are not merely wishful thinking but a reality sweeping across the Asian society. It will reveal products that are sustainable, aesthetically appealing and fulfilling today’s needs; all while delivering a better tomorrow. Held in conjunction with Malaysian Institute of Architect’s (PAM) Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival 2012, it is touted as the annual’s most important architecture, interior design and building exhibition in this region that congregates architects, interior designers, developers and other building related professionals. ARCHIDEX 2012 is jointly organised between the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) and C.I.S Network Sdn Bhd. In 2011, ARCHIDEX was bestowed the ‘Industry Excellence’ and ‘Best Trade Exhibition’ by MACEOS (Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers). Aedas’ U-bora Towers Triumphs at Cityscape Awards 2012 Aedas is honoured to receive an award at this year’s Cityscape Abu Dhabi Awards, at a ceremony held on 23 April at the prestigious Yas Viceroy Hotel in Abu Dhabi. U-bora Towers, which is located at the heart of Dubai’s Business Bay, garnered the Commercial, Office & Retail Project Award in the Built category. This is the fifth award won by this project designed by Andrew Bromberg. The U-bora Towers development was designed in response to the site conditions and has given equal attention to its three different uses – offices, residential and retail. The office tower forms a sculptural element with plans twist at varying degrees and angles as it increases in height, re-orientating their faces to maximise available views. Fused with the office tower through a 10,000 square-meter public landscaped deck is the residential element, which stays low to maintain a suitable residential scale and offer prime lake views. The building form of the resi-
dential element is also unique with a void puncturing through to create an iconic urban gateway for the development. This year, the Cityscape awards attracted over 200 entries in the MENA region to compete for 8 RFA awards in 8 categories.

Dancing Dragons
Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture Designs Dancing Dragons, A Two-Tower Complex For Seoul’s Yongsan International Business District

ancing Dragons, a pair of landmark supertall mixeduse towers for the new Yongsan International Business District in Seoul, South Korea. The buildings, which include residential, office and retail elements, consist of slender, sharply angled mini-towers cantilevered around a central core.
Design features
The design aesthetic is highly contemporary yet informed by aspects of traditional Korean culture. The mini-towers feature a dramatic series of diagonal massing cuts that create living spaces that float beyond the structure. This recalls the eaves of traditional Korean temples—a design theme echoed both in the geometry of the building skin and the jutting canopies at the towers’ base. The theme is extended in the building skin, which suggests the scales of Korean mythical dragons, which seem to dance around the core—hence the project’s name. (Yongsan, the name of the overall development, means “Dragon Hill” in Korean.) Dancing Dragons’ scale-like skin is also a performative element. Gaps between its overlapping panels feature operable 600-mm vents through which air can circulate, making the skin “breathable” like that of certain animals. Landscape features, designed in collaboration with Martha Schwartz Partners, include sloped berms that echo that geometry. The site also includes a retail podium with a crystalline sculptural form and sunken garden that provide access to a large below-grade retail complex.
Structure: The structural scheme for Dancing Dragons, developed by AS+GG in collaboration with the international structural engi-

The mini-towers are hung off the cruciform cores in a balanced fashion by means of a belt truss system, stabilizing the structure.Towers 1 and 2—about 450 meters and 390 meters tall, respectively—share an architectural language and, therefore, a close family resemblance, but are not identical. In the taller structure, the 88-level Tower 1, the massing cuts at the top and bottom of the mini-towers are V-shaped. In the 77-level Tower 2, the cuts move diagonally in a single unbroken line; they are also arranged in a radial pattern around the core that is

In both buildings, the mini-tower cuts are clad in glass at the top and bottom, making for dramatic skylights above the units at the highest levels and a transparent floor beneath the units at the lowest levels. This offers the opportunity for special high-value penthouse duplex units with spectacular 360-degree views of downtown Seoul and the adjacent Han River, along with an abundance of natural light. “The shingled texture of the skin is developed with inte-

Dragons, rising from the ground The ONE Ho Chi Minh City T he building will stand 240 meters tall when completed and features two, sleek towers connected by a multi-level retail podium. The towers will comprise a six-star Ritz Carlton Hotel, Grade-A offices and luxury apartments.
Project Layout
The 48-storey west tower contains office space in the lower half and the Ritz Carlton Hotel in the upper floors. The hotel’s public areas are in the podium and include a ballroom, meeting rooms, restaurants, bar, fitness club and a pool at the podium roof deck. The floors above the office levels contain the Ritz Carlton’s guest rooms, VIP club and a rooftop lounge. At 55-storeys, the east tower contains luxury residences. Semi-private elevators are provided in two cores arrangement for better convenience. Residents will also be able to enjoy communal activities at community rooms and a pool on roof deck. In the podium are nine levels of above ground space and another five levels of underground space. Three of the five underground levels are set aside for car parks. The remainder of the podium is reserved for retail space.
Design Features
Designed to represent two dragons, rising from the ground, the two towers rise above the podium (which represent the dragons’ coiled tails). These towers symbolize the bodies of the two dragons. The top of the towers have larger floor space which house the VIP suites in the hotel as well as luxury penthouses in the residential tower. They dramatically cantilever over the podium, and represent the head of each dragon in the building’s design. Similarly to the podium, the façade comprised of glass

and limestone panels. Designed to look like scales, the panels are denser in some areas and transparent in others.
The ONE Ho Chi Minh City is a world-class, mixed use development located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City developed by the Bitexco Group.
Façade Treatments
The architectural design provides a subtle direction to this development and implies an underlying dynamic strength. French limestone bands will extend horizontally across the glass facades of the development. They commence from a dense pattern at the outer edges of the towers and fade towards the centre. The stone panels will protrude slightly to add shadow and definition to the arcades. The limestone reflects the heritage of the city by engaging a material that is traditionally used in historic and beautiful buildings such and the Notra Dame Cathedral in District 1. In this way, the building will be connected to the past while looking towards the future Residential balconies are concealed by glass louvers within the facades, hiding the recesses from exterior view. The louvers may be opened depending on the suitability of the weather.
Unique crystalline glass cubes
Crystalline glass cubes slide under the cantilevered tops of both the West and East Towers The cubes will be illuminated at night to accentuate the cantilevered tops, adding elegance and drama to the composition. The hotel cube houses signature restaurants, presidential suites, club spaces and premier facilities. The residential cube contains luxury penthouse apartments and premier amenities. Glowing at night, the cubes will be easily recognised from any point in the city, making The ONE Ho Chi Minh City a highly distinctive and valuable address. RFA

iSQUARE iSQUARE is a 24-storey high shopping mall in one of Hong Kong’s commercial area in Tsim Sha Tsui. It was developed by Associated International Hotels Ltd.
T
he building provides approximately 53,000 square meters of gross floor area with 3 major components - retail shops, restaurants and a cinema complex, with the retail experience extending up the full height of the building via a series of sky-atria that orchestrate spatial tensions in stratifications within the dynamic space.
The design concept of the building. The design concept of iSQUARE emphasizes on fluidity and transparency of the spatial arrangement. The podium of the new building is set back eight meters on average along the entire length of Peking Road on the south, thus creating a new civic plaza of more than three hundred square meters in the main entrance precinct. The new retail experience extends up the full height of the building via a series of sky-atria that orchestrate spatial tensions in stratifications within the dynamic space.
The areas of innovation On the exterior, the two forces of fluidity and transparency are manifested through an interplay of a series of large volume glass boxes and escalator systems: the ground floor and first floor of the new building are occupied by double-storey-high branded flagship shops with direct street access. A set of express escalators deliver visitors directly onto the second floor of the building, the Lobby Floor, where journeys to different destinations begins: a double volume Event Floor at 3/F, Restaurant Floor at 6/F, Cinema Boxes at 9/F, and ultimately a 400-seats IMAX cinema, the largest in Hong Kong, floating in the sky at the top of the podium. All these express escalators are strategi-

Mixed Use Buildings cally placed along the Nathan Road façade as bridge connections to the various sky atria to echo the movement and dynamism in the bustling streets below. At the top of the building, to capitalise on the breathtaking panoramic view of Victoria Harbour towards Hong Kong Island on the south, and also to positively respond to the blocky urban fabric at higher altitude, a special 12-storey Gourmet Tower housing most of the food and beverage outlets is planned for and oriented for view optimization. Full storey high vision glass panels at the three major façades have been allowed for at the tower. Balconies facing south are added to promote outdoor dining for the enjoyment of sunshine at the top of the town. The topmost floor is reserved for a double-volume signature restaurant which adds the finishing touch to the prestigious development. The design of the project evolves from a new way of looking at urban memories in a contextual juncture where specific elements are selected and heightened for architectural expressions. In the process, some functions are allowed to fade to a natural death; while others thrive to a new existence more attune to
contemporary urban life. This project attempts to postulate how architecture could deal with displacement with honesty and faith, and hence find architectural expressions abound in a new understanding of the past. Completed in 2009, this project displaces the original hotel function -the former Hyatt Regency Hotel, which has witnessed the passage of time for almost forty years, but expands its retail element which now takes the centre stage. "iSQUARE", as it is now called, will offer new retail and entertainment opportunities to the modem flâneurs of the 21'' century city.

Wood – in Singapore
Material Watch
Michael Buckley, MPhil, FIWSc
Nobody thinks about wood in Singapore very much, so it would seem, or do they in fact? Looking around the island one could be forgiven for thinking that this is the ultimate concrete oasis in a desert of green plants and ornamental trees. There used to be a substantial wood industry in Singapore and it was a huge wood trading transit point for shipments to the world. There were sawmills and plywood factories aplenty in Jurong and Kranji in years past, but no more.
T
his ‘Red Dot’ of a country in the centre of Southeast Asia may be a player in wood no more, but beneath the surface there is more wood and ‘wood influence’ than meets the eye! Architects and developers don’t build in wood and nobody would expect them to do so. But renovations have almost a religious status among the upwardly mobile new owners of the endless new condo complexes. It seems to be rare that anyone in Singapore moves into a newly finished apartment without changing the kitchen or the doors or the bedroom fittings. In Europe and the USA the word ‘renovation’ is taken to mean refurbishment of old properties, but not so in Singapore. Chengal decking, Teak floors, Oak fitted bedroom units, and so on, all make an active market in wood. Add to that the many interior designers that still turn to this most human of all building materials and one can understand that there are still a bevy of distributors and fabricators around Sungei Kadut making the most of this demand. And talking of Sg. Kadut, at the International Furniture Centre there is the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) fronting Singapore’s furniture industry and looking after its interests. “What furniture industry?” you may say. There still remain a few furniture plants on the island, but offshore Singapore punches way above its weight with companies operating factories throughout Asia, many of which are based on wood. In fact they account for about 1% of the annual global furniture production of US$100 billion. Then, of course, there is the domestic flooring market in Singapore, and specialist woodworking companies making high tech windows and custom doors as well as some developers which work mainly in wood. So what about wood in Singapore? The key is to develop understanding, not only of wood’s technical performance capabilities but also of its environmental importance. With the Singapore Green Building Council issuing Green Labels to materials far less environmentally friendly (mined steel and aluminium products, drilled fossil fuel non-renewable oil-based products and other higher embodied energy products) it is important that Singapore now takes wood seriously in its sustainability mix. A big step forward in that process is the unveiling by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) of the LCA study of environmental impact for American hardwood harvesting, processing and transportation. That transparency is part of a continuing information programme all over Asia which started in China in March and continued in Singapore in June with a convention jointly organised by the SFIC and the Singapore Institute of Architects for 350 delegates. There can be no better start then helping these professionals to understand why the responsible use of wood is so important to the environment of Southeast Asia and beyond. Then later the message will be consolidated at BEX in Singa-

pore where wood is slated to take its rightful place in the debate. So Singapore, like any other nation, needs to use wood because we all must. We need to extract damaged and mature trees to make way for young trees to grow vigorously to maximise atmospheric carbon absorption and reduce the use of alternative high energy embodied materials. We need to use wood to give forests value to retain them and prevent conversion to agricultural production and other uses. Singapore can do this by using wood from anywhere in the absence of its own commercial forests. And just in case anyone should think that there is no forest in Singapore in which to commune with nature or simply marvel at the majesty of tropical forests there are

Building Green Creating Green Spaces for a Sustainable Urban Environment Solutions to be Showcased at BEX Asia 2012
S
ingapore’s awareness of the importance of creating a green and sustainable environment has grown significantly over the past few years, with recent developments such as the Gardens by the Bay, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Pasir Ris Sports and Recreation Centre amongst others leading the way. The integration of urban cities and landscapes such as the recently rejuvenated Bishan Park is an example of the community moving towards creating a sustainable, liveable environment. Local landscaping firms participating at BEX Asia 2012, such as Greenology Pte Ltd and Prince’s Landscape & Construction Pte Ltd, have been driving landscapes “up the wall”, literally. With the vertical greenery systems, growing plants on walls and rooftops is now possible. Green solutions for skyrise landscaping have been developed for the hybridisation of urban and natural landscapes. More than just aesthetics, Greenology designed and built the first Rain Garden at Balam Estate in Singapore, which provides urban storm water management using landscapes and plants. This is a sustainable treatment system. Studies have shown that green spaces improve the quality of life, psychologically and holistically, in urban areas. Hence,
restaurant giant, McDonald’s, is embracing the green initiative and has piloted projects to green its restaurants not only in the U.S. but in Singapore as well. Their first green restaurant in Singapore was opened in Jurong Central. This has inspired other restaurants and retailers to do the same. In Singapore, the Building & Construction Authority (BCA) has been encouraging the use of sustainable products in offices. Under its Green Mark for Office Interior scheme, companies receive points for using environmentally-friendly furniture and furnishings under the section of “Sustainable Materials Selection”. BEX Asia 2012 is the event of the year that highlights these areas of green building – skyrise landscaping and green interiors for homes and offices, and other green building solutions for the region. The event will showcase local and regional companies and products. BEX Asia is supported by Strategic Partners - the Singapore Green Building Council and BCA, which is organising the International Green Building Conference 2012 that is to be held alongside BEX Asia. This will be the fifth edition of the annual show and it will be held from the 10-12 October 2012, at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre.
The World Gets Ready for Solar Power
G
lobalData- Solar power investments broke records last year, surpassing wind power investments, according to a report by energy experts GlobalData. The new report states that global renewable power investments reached $209 billion in 2011, as the industry witnessed changing geographical opportunities. Renewables received high investments in the US, while changing economic conditions in Europe affected available funding. However, government policies continue to prove themselves as a major factor in the renewable power market, encouraging the worldwide switch from carbon-emitting methods to clean power generation. In 2011, solar power investments seized a huge 49% share of global renewable power investments, compared to the 34% share given to wind power. A drastic decrease in solar PV module prices, due to oversupply issues, resulted in an increase in capacity installations. Venture financing and private equity investments were also high for solar technology developments. With solar power prices approaching grid-parity, asset financing investments in this area have witnessed a higher growth rate than other renewable generation technologies.
14 | Roof & Facade Asia Asean Edition | May 2012
Renewable power investments from Europe are anticipated to drop in 2012, as the region’s credit crisis continues to damage economic stability. However, North America will continue to demonstrate high investments in both solar and wind power, particularly towards the development of new wind power projects. The renewables industry is also expected to see growing investments in the Asia-Pacific region, as low-cost equipment manufacturers tempt the market with competitive pricing, while some countries in the Middle East and North Africa, such as Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Algeria and Jordon, are being tipped as upcoming solar power investment destinations for major market players. China looks to become a future investment giant in the solar market, as the state government has planned financing of around $100m to develop projects throughout 40 African nations, where large prospective demand markets are enabling China to expand its production targets. As a result, China’s solar module manufacturers are planning to increase their production capacity drastically, adding 3.6 Giga Watts (GW) of module production capacity in the counRFA try by 2012.

M
onier’s Energy Efficient Roofing Solutions (E3) consisting of Monier CoolRoof® and Monier SolarRoof are designed to help save energy with high quality and aesthetics that are synonymous with their reputation. The MONIER CoolRoof® System The MONIER CoolRoof® system restricts heat transfer through the roof and cools the building’s interior naturally, without mechanical devices and by efficient construction techniques, heat reflection and ventilation. MONIER CoolRoof® keeps you up to 10oc* cooler and helps you to save up to 30%* on electricity bills. Primarily, it is MONIER technology that does the trick, namely, in the five composite elements of MONIER CoolRoof®, namely: (i) MONIER Roof System, the first layer of heat reflection through the body structure of leak-free MONIER roof tiles; (ii) MONIER RadenShield®, a high-performance underlay acting as radiant barrier that reflects up to 97% of radiant heat; (iii) Counter Battens that create a larger air passageway as well as air insulation gap to carry away hot trapped air between the roof tiles and RadenShield®; (iv) MONIER Compactroll®, a Ridge and Hip Dry Fix solution with high-ventilation and water-repellent fleece that opens up all ridges and hips length as a ventilation outlet to create a natural airflow to allow hot air escape; and (v) MONIER Pest Guard™, an eaves ventilat-
ing system that facilitates maximum air inlet while preventing birds and pests from accessing and taking residence in your roof. MONIER SolarRoof System MONIER SolarRoof System converts solar energy to renewable and sustainable use by virtue of its two essential components, i.e., (a) MONIER Solar Water Heating System, which generates, stores and deploys solar energy for the household minus the use of electricity with, as research has shown, savings of up to 15%* in electricity bills! Other advantages are that the solar thermal system is: safe to use, without the potential of electrical hazards; eco-friendly, with minimum impact on the environment; 100% leakproof; and (b) MONIER Toplight™, interlocking transparent roof tiles that act as “roof windows” to allow natural daylight to enter and light up the interior, doing away with artificial lighting. This illumination equates to an electric bulb of 75W (1 Toplight™ is equivalent to a 75W light bulb) which means lower electricity bills and quick payback on investment. Aesthetics aside, MONIER Toplight™ tiles are 100% leak-proof. Rainwater harvesting system . Rainwater harvesting can provide up to 50% of a household's need and also acts as an independent water supply during water rationing. By
installing a rainwater harvesting system, homeowners can benefit from lower water bills. More importantly, it allows homeowners to play a part in preserving the environment. MONIER EcoRain for the Environment MONIER EcoRain rainwater harvesting system takes advantage of the abundance of water when it’s there, for use when it's not. This not only saves water, but saves money and reduces human impact on the environment By collecting, filtering and storing FREE rainwater, a large quantity of water consumption in a household can be safely replaced without any inconvenience. MONIER EcoRain is easy to install and simple to maintain, thus providing a hassle-free, yet effective supply of harvested rainwater that saves water costs whilst helping the environment. If the tank should run dry during periods of heavy usage, the system automatically switches to the mains water supply. The harvested Rain water can be used for Vehicle washing , Garden watering and Toilet Flushing, * Data validated by MONIER Technical Centre in Europe for tropical weather, in collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in U.S.A

Country Focus
The green wave has swept the building and construction industry in this little island and more developers and building owners are coming onboard to green their buildings.
I
n May 2012, there are more than 1,180 green buildings in Singapore, with a total gross floor area of about 37 million square metres or 16% of the total estimated existing building floor space. To promote green and sustainable developments, The Building and Construction Authority (BCA), an agency under the Ministry of National Development has introduced several awards for various stakeholders of the built environment. Singapore's construction sector congregated at the BCA Awards on May 24, 2012 to celebrate its contributions to the built environment. More than 2,200 guests attended the ceremony, including Guest-of-Honour President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Minister of State (MOS) for Trade and Industry and National Development Mr Lee Yi Shyan. A total of 318 BCA Awards were given out this year, compared to 261 last year. The increase is due to higher construction standards and more Green Mark Awards this year. "While the industry continues to raise its standards and improves the working conditions on site, it is important for everyone in the industry to care for our environment and our community, especially the less fortunate", said Dr John Keung, CEO of BCA. This year, Ascendas, CapitaLand Group and National
ects respectively.. It was also the first time that a public sector organization, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) was conferred the Built Environment Leadership Platinum Award, the highest accolade for demonstrating excellence and leadership in shaping a safe, high quality, sustainable and friendly built environment in Singapore since the Award was introduced in 2009. HDB's CEO, Dr. Cheong Koon Hean said, "HDB is honoured to receive the Built Environment Leadership Platinum Award and other awards. As the largest developer in Singapore, we have been striving over the years to develop world-class public housing. In October 2011, we introduced the 'Roadmap to Better Living in HDB Towns', a strategic plan that guides HDB to deliver a better living environment for our residents. This award is a great encouragement to us, and we will continue to focus on the three thrusts of our Roadmap - building welldesigned, sustainable, and community-centric towns." A record number of 24 builders received the BCA Green and Gracious Builder Award this year. Out of the 24 winners, 18 had joined the ranks for the first time and six were re-certified to higher ratings under the Green and Gracious Builders scheme. Five of the top seven winners - Hexacon Construction Pte Ltd, Ho Lee Construction Pte Ltd, Samsung C&T Corporation, Sembawang Engineers and Constructors Pte Ltd and Ssangyong Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd - were previously awarded 'Merit' and 'Excellent' ratings and have now successfully met the higher criteria during re-certification to clinch the 'Star' rating. Lend Lease Pharmaceutical Asia Pte Ltd and Lend Lease Singapore Pte Ltd are the other two in the top tier. The winners received their awards during the BCA Awards ceremony at the Resorts World Sentosa on 24 May 2012. His Excellency President Tony Tan Keng Yam graced the event as Guest of Honour. This year, another new milestone in sustainable development has been achieved in Singapore with the first landed residential estate joining the fold of BCA Green Mark Platinum buildings - HAUS@SERANGOON GARDEN. Jointly developed by City Developments Limited (CDL) and Hong Realty (Private) Limited, HAUS@SERANGOON GARDEN comprises 96 landed terrace houses located at Serangoon Garden Way. Slated for launch around mid2012, this is the first landed housing estate in Singapore to achieve the top-tier Green Mark Platinum award. HAUS@SERANGOON GARDEN is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. The development embraces an extensive use of both passive and active green building approaches to ensure that a comprehensive sustainable design is incorporated from the beginning. These include Photovoltaic (PV) system using solar panels to convert sunlight into electricity, air-conditioner heat recovery system, rainwater harvesting system and many others.
A New Era begins University of Singapore were conferred the Green Mark Champion Award for their strong commitment towards environmental sustainability. To qualify for the award, they each delivered at least ten Green Mark projects of Gold or higher rating, including a minimum of three Green Mark Platinum projects and three Green Mark GoldPlus proj16 | Roof & Facade Asia Asean Edition | May March 2012 2012
A new era of revolutionising the production of precast concrete components for buildings has started in Singapore. Tiong Seng Holdings, which initiated this transformation, launched the first integrated construction and prefab hub (ICPH) at Tuas on May 16, 2012. Such a prefab hub houses an automated production of precast components
and its related construction activities within a multi-storey complex. BCA has supported the Tiong Seng's initiative to build this prefab hub with a million dollar funding under the $250 million Construction Productivity and Capability Fund (CPCF). BCA is facilitating more prefab hubs to be built and has launched the first tender for a 20,000 m2 land parcel at Kaki Bukit Road, for the development of other Integrated Construction and Prefabrication Hubs (ICPHs). Through the development of multi-storey ICPHs, land use is optimised and higher productivity is achieved through automated production processes, which will change the landscape of the precast and prefabrication industry in Singapore. BCA has also introduced the Construction Productivity and Capability Fund (CPCF) in June 2010 to help construction firms to improve productivity and build capability. So far, more than $46m of the CPCF has been committed, benefitting more than 1,300 companies, of which two-thirds or 850 are smaller firms. BCA will be paying more attention to help the smaller firms as they form a large base of contractors in Singapore. To ride on the current strong productivity wave and to create greater awareness on ways for the construction sector to boost its productivity, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has organised a host of events under the overall platform of Singapore Construction Productivity Week 2012. The events of the Week, held from 14 to 18 May, were largely tailored to excite and inspire industry firms and the workforce to play an active part in raising their productivity and capability. Another key component of the Week is the BuildTech Asia exhibition which was opened by Minister for National Development, Mr Khaw Boon Wan on May 15, 2012. The exhibition not only was a business networking platform for industry players, but also enhanced firms' awareness of the technologies and processes available to drive productivity.
Green Building Research
The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and the Ministry of National Development (MND) have jointly awarded funding for nine projects in a pilot green building grant call to encourage research and greater adoption of green building technologies. Launched in April 2011, the
grant call is the first of its kind structured to foster PublicPrivate Collaboration (PPC) in green building research. The green building joint grant call fosters collaboration between public research institutions and companies through joint R&D projects. This creates synergies as public research institutions are able to tap on the industry's experience and network, while companies leverage on the research expertise and cutting edge infrastructure within public research institutes, to develop deployable green building technologies. The nine awarded projects will support the development of technologies in two key areas - energy efficiency and
building facade materials. These include energy efficient technologies that reduce the amount of heat penetration into buildings and innovative air-conditioning technologies that require less energy for cooling and help optimise energy management in buildings. Following the success of the pilot green building joint grant call, the second green building joint grant call is projected to open in the third quarter of 2012. The building industry is not only promoting sustainable practices but also innovation and research, which is in true sense an all-round development which other industries should follow. Pritzker Prize Laureate
W
ang Shu, who makes his home and works in Hangzhou, China, was born on November 4, 1963 in Urumqi, a city in the western most province of The People’s Republic of China, Xinjiang, the recipient of this year’s Pritzker Architecture Prize
Chronology Of Major Works
After graduating from the Department of Architecture at Nanjing Institute of Technology, he worked for the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou doing research on the environment and architecture in relation to the renovation of old buildings. Nearly a year later, he was at work on his first architectural commission, the design of a 3600 square meter Youth Center for the small town of Haining (near Hangzhou). It was completed in 1990. He calls his practice as Amateur Architecture Studio. Wang Shu´s buildings have a very rare attribute—a commanding and even, at times, monumental presence, while functioning superbly and creating a calm environment for life and daily activities. The History Museum at Ningbo is one of those unique buildings that while striking in photos, is even more moving when experienced. The museum is an urban icon, a well-tuned repository for history and a setting where the visitor comes first. The richness of the spatial experience, both in the exterior and interior is remarkable. This building embodies strength, pragmatism and emotion all in one. Wang Shu knows how to embrace the challenges of construction and employ them to his advantage. His approach to building is both critical and experimental. Using recycled materials, he is able to send several messages on the careful use of resources and respect for tradition and context as well as give a frank appraisal of technology and the quality of construction today, particularly in China. Wang Shu’s works that use recycled building materials, such as roof tiles and bricks from dismantled walls, create rich textural and tactile collages. Working in collaboration with construction workers, the outcome sometimes has an element of unpredictability, which in his case, gives the buildings a freshness and spontaneity.

Stadium modeled with Advance Steel The new stadium in Valenciennes, France, is located near the original one, and has a 25000person capacity. It is meant to host the Valenciennes Anzin Football Club’s games. ETI Design Office, which has experience in designing several stadiums, is in charge of this project. In addition to the project’s size, the expectations of the Architecture’s Office - with the major constraint of not letting any bolts appear on the steel structure - have called for the use of Advance Steel for easy fabrication and erection at site without errors. The conception of the new Valenciennes Stadium has required the expertise of ETI Design Office, The size of the project required four people working full-time on it: one Project Manager, Mr Fabrice Grisot, one Construction Engineer, Mr Stéphane Dottori, and two draftsmen. The steel structure of the stadium stands as a support for ready-made concrete bleachers; it consists of tapered box beams made of “Y-shaped” welded plates. An access footbridge located under the steel roof enables easy technical access to the stadium’s perimeter.
Preliminary studies of the steel structure and modeling: about the use of Advance Steel ETI started using AutoCAD® to draw the first lines of the project in 2D and submit it to the contracting owners. The project owner and architect’s need to view more precise details in 3D about the most complex assemblies required the use of Advance Steel, which has a Building Information Modeling (BIM) approach. With the flexibility of its numerous tools, Advance Steel enabled fast modeling of all steel structural elements, whether by using integrated libraries of standard sections or by using the automatic conversion tool that allows converting AutoCAD® elements into polygonal plates.
An imperative of this architectural project: a steel structure without any visible bolts In order to follow the architect’s wish to have no visible bolts on the structure once the con-
struction is erected, ETI had to design assemblies early from the study phase. Thus, bolted assemblies were designed to ease the transport of parts (that can reach a weight of 10 tons each) and the parts were welded together at site with fastening plates. The welds were then painted and grinded to get a perfect aspect. Therefore, it was necessary to model many weld preparation chamfers on the edges of the plates and the profiles to get a realistic result and, most of all, for these elements to appear clearly on the fabrication drawings.
GRAITEC BIM SOLUTION Interoperability and integration
From the 3D model that is automatically numbered, Advance Steel allowed the automatic creation of all fabrication and assembly drawings, with all the necessary labels and dimensions for the workshop. In addition to the drawings generated as DWG files that can be easily read by the architect, the steel parts could be directly transferred as DSTV and DXF files to the CNC machines located in the workshop of a subcontractor in charge of the fabrication of the structure.
Assembling the steel structure without errors The assembly drawings generated from the 3D model included all the necessary 2D and 3D views for the assembly teams to perfectly understand everything at site. Since all verifications of clash detection were applied on the Advance Steel digital 3D model, no adaptations at site were needed during the erection of the structure. This project is a great performance that demonstrates the growth capacity of GRAITEC solutions and also their fit to the market, Customers’ needs and BIM environment. The AsiaPacific region has major business opportunities as it continues to mature in BIM technologies . With the ADVANCE portfolio, GRAITEC has the opportunity and challenge to target these markets and bring significant productivity gains to its Customers. Flexible, Reliable, Versatile and Cost effective roofing material Onduline
is an attractive, lightweight but extremely tough corrugated roofing composite material manufactured from bitumen-saturated organic fibers under intense pressure and heat. Its unique production process is the result of a 60 years continuous effort in research and development and it consists of several phases of intense complexity. The result is a flexible and cost effective product that provides weather protection, sound and thermal insulation - even in the most extreme climatic conditions. It is guaranteed waterproof for at least 10 years, it cannot rust or become brittle and it is rot and fungi resistant. It resists most chemicals and corrosion, and is very easy to handle and fix. Onduline contains no asbestos and therefore presents no health risk either in installation or when the building is in use. That is why Onduline is superior to many other corrugated roofing systems and has been installed on millions of roofs around the world. Onduline Traditional Roofing System:
It is the most common way to install Onduline on a wooden, concrete or metal structure in both new constructions and renovations. The roof will benefit the advantages of the Onduline sheets effectively protecting the structures, creating a unique living comfort and aesthetics, and considerably prolonging the lifespan of the roof. The system is composed by the Onduline, and several accessories that have been specifically designed to achieve the best combined results. Onduline Oversheeting Roofing System: This system has been especially designed for all those situations in which there is an existing deteriorated roof covering material such as corroded metal sheets and cracked fiber-cement, asbestos sheets or asphalt shingles, which needs to be renewed. The advantages of the system are explicit: no need to remove the existing structure; Onduline will cover the existing roof and will bring with it not only its major benefits such as waterproofing, sound/heat insulation and endurance, but will also reduce dras-
tically the installation costs by simply eliminating the removal and disposal of the old roofing sheets. Isoline Under-Roofing System: Isoline under-roofing system is a unique roof underlay system utilizing Onduline Classic products below all type roof tiles. It creates an effective independent secondary weatherproof roof that allows to install tiles and slates safely and rapidly with a substantial cost reduction. In other words, this revolutionary system allows the construction of a proper waterproof and ventilated roof in conditions not usually permitted to tiles. The under-roofing system is suitable for most types of clay or concrete tiles, metal decks, asbestos sheets, natural and fibre cement slates. Onduvilla Lightweight Roof-Cladding Tile: Onduvilla is a bituminous corrugated unique roofing tile developed to combine technical, economical and aesthetical advantages, both for new constructions and roof renovations. It is manufactured from a monolayer of organic fibers impregnated with bitumen under pressure and heat. The colour pigmentation system stains the colour into the tile.
