Westmead - Sydney

The whole isn’t greater than the sum of its parts. The sum of the parts in nexus invents the whole. Neo-Populous is a conceptual framework envisioned for the Westmead area. The concept presents the school site as the focal point of a bustling, newly urbanized region which constitutes a variety of interventions extending as far as distant corners of the Westmead area and further into the Parramatta area. This builds a functional bond with the Parramatta central region through presently activated paths of access that ensure added urban value, equity and inclusivity for the diverse users. Neo-Populous is the evolved spirit of Westmead; nurtured, retained and fortified under the threat of a rapidly urbanizing Sydney that is in a ‘No-Quarter’ combat with Gentrification and Identity. Site: Larger Westmead Area, NSW, Australia Role: Overall Conceptual Design, Site Planning and Analysis, Full Graphic Representation, Technical Drawings (Solo Project)

PRECINCT LEVEL STRATEGY - BEYOND THE EXTENTS

BREAKDOWN OF PROJECT AREA OF EFFECT The full building site extends beyond the developed boundary, making it so visual and physical connections are developed and enhanced between all the areas of developments on site. This is meant to strengthen way-finding, provide a walkability incentive and finally, produce a healthy, connected community . The visual and physical connections are present in he the form of the guided red-paths and the connected bike-lanes and added real estate in the existing pedestrian walkways.

REGION A: WALK FROM THE STATION This addition allows the users to engage with a historical site and adds value to the station walk, developing this as a viable and diverted path for parents and children. While the yellow represents added pedestrian stake on the main roads, and it helps to reclaim the public domain for pedestrians, this red section provides a legible, rewarding and direct walking path that is safe and navigational for children.

REGION D: RALPH STREET Addition of commercial/mixed-use developments to a and expansion of businesses and other valuable walki REGION C: COMMUNITY CENTRE REVISION Addition of building and mixed use in order to expand the school network in walkability and inherit community value. This gives users purpose to be in and around the school despite whether they engage in learning and parenting or not. This creates a constant community presence around the site and adds purpose to the bike and pedestrian real-estate added.

REGION D: AMOS STREET INTERVENTION This includes Density Revision from low-density to medium/hi

Manipulate form to create several indoor and outdoor experiences that interface closely.y

Connect buildings with foot bridges to create holisc, compounded and complete building experiences.

On the building level, the site will be populated with several structures that follow the same principals. Several rooms will be collated in their desired arrangements, with considerations of function and indoor outdoor environments. Next, the buildings will be replicated and made to face each other, this solidifies the presence of 3 degrees of space: outdoor, indoor-outdoor and indoor. (HIERARCHY OF SPACES) The forms of the buildings will be manipulated slightly and made so they interact on a deeper level, making the negative space between the structures more varied with different potential for outdoor activities. Finally, bridges are to be developed between the shorter connecting edges, in hopes of solidifying the built form and producing a unified structure that encourages collaborative learning.

REGION A: The Station Walk

Redeveloped Pedestrian Paths: Added pavement space + Bike Lanes

Areas marked for commercial redevelopment + Public Domain

Areas marked specifically for meaningful and safe circulation, with clear and distinct way-finding properties. Opportunity to place Way-finding and Guidance instruments.

• This section of the street-scape near the station is meant to illustrate the newly proposed openness of space and its pedestrian orientation. • This adds incentive to use, walk and experience the public domain through art, open space, surface and material management that provides a variety of experience and environmental comfort.

The station walk is one of the primary intervention regions. It features a well-defined walking path that is legible, well defined and secure from automobile influence. It directs the potential users, such as young students, through carefully curated areas where they are given an exclusive walking path away from the main roads, with the ability to connect deeply through the experience of public art or other defined experiences along the path. This walk from the station will terminate at the helm of the site after it has guided users through a carefully curated, secure and legible urban walk.

REGION C: Added function, more use. REGION D: Density Revisions, more residents in the same space.

S y d n e y C B D (2020)

TerraExtra is a physical concept that is willing to engage with existing, highly functional public space and bring it into a changed world. The Sydneysider relationship with the outdoors has greatly impacted my own prejudice against over-representing unlabelled public space in an urban setting, coming from a highly neoliberal urban experience riddled with privatized public space. However, a fragile immune system kept me and many others scared and indoors for more than one could handle. As I ached for a place to be, I boiled down my personal relationship with Tumbalong Park in a post-covid world and the ideas that arose from it are: Site: Larger Westmead Area, NSW, Australia Role: Overall Conceptual Design, Site Planning and Analysis, Full Graphic Representation, Technical Drawings (Solo Project)

Expanded Spaces. Changing, alternating perspectives. Individual Impact & Traces. In a world where we are no longer able to comfort each other by being physically present with one another and an online infrastructure that doesn’t cut it, community traces are essential to drive a social zeitgeist. Feeling the presence of other people by observing them from vast distances below and above you. Experiencing and re-experiencing space and site in order to continue to be curious about our surroundings. Increasing the inherent value of existing, highly integrated infrastructure by adding texture, experiential value and enhancements is incredibly more robust than starting over. Added value, ingrained deeply within existing great public spaces engrains a sense of resilience. Terra extra examines the idea of public space adapting and shifting in a vertical direction, as the horizontal appears to have been completed. Limitation with no real limit.

Ideated concept sketches expanding on urban form and vertical expansion of the urban fabric.

Sydney

Guardian Square is an Urban Intervention Designed for the larger entry way of Bedford street. Through an exhaustive analytical process of research and active surveying, it was deemed that Newtown lacks an essential centrality, which holds it back from establishing it’s core as a complete central hub that is beneficial to the stakeholders in question. Based around the Guardian Statue, this urban intervention strategically re-diverts traffic from the station and the Spine of King street, along, around and into the heart of Newtown as well as introducing an activity center based around community involvement and integration, safety, inclusion as well as engaging urban design that is captivating, characteristic and personal. Site: Bedford Street onto Australia Street, Newtown Role: Site Planning and Analysis, Design Development, Graphic Representation, Technical Drawings, Research and theory.

Siteless - Mobile

Mother has been dispensed in the broken world to fulfil quarantine functions. Mother operates as a 12.5 sqm solar powered pod with the ability to connect with other pods to complete its absolute 25 sqm form. Like two peas in a pod, human and monkey alike can access Mother and her children pods through lens-like openings and quarantine suit. Each pod is self sterilizing for the next inhabitant. Tentacle-like, moist electrical hollow steel profiles allow Mother to be mobile, omit waste and scavenge for and absorb resources. The Mother carries, the Mother lifts, the Mother holds and cradles.
