The James Klugman Collection THE JAMES KLUGMANN COLLECTION OF BOOKS, PAMPHLETS & CERAMICS AT THE MARX MEMORIAL LIBRARY – a note by Betty Reid James Klugmann died in 1977 at the age of 65 from a heart attack after battling with ill-health over many years. He had just given up his responsibilities as Editor of the journal, Marxism Today, and was looking forward to working on the third volume of his history of the Communist Party. James's politics were forged in the Britain of the 'thirties, a Britain of poverty, unemployment and the shadow of war growing day by day. He was one of those students in the Cambridge of the 'thirties, about whom much has been written very often by ignorant and superficial men. In his first year at Trinity College in 1933 he joined the Communist Party and together with John Cornford, later killed in Spain, built up the student branch there. The fight against inequality and privilege and the struggle to build an anti-fascist front absorbed all his energies. Having obtained a double first in modern languages, James went on to research, but left this to become secretary in Paris from 1935 to 1939 of the World Student Association for Peace and Freedom. In the second world war he first served in the Middle East, where his knowledge of Arabic assisted him, and later was promoted to Major and went to Yugoslavia, where his knowledge of Serbo-Croat enabled him to work as liaison officer with Tito's partisans. His distinguished war service included a mention in dispatches. It was while he was abroad that he began seriously the systematic collecting of books and material related to international working class history, which became his passion. He returned 2

to England with a unique collection of duplicated pamphlets produced by Yugoslav partisans, a collection of which was presented to the Yugoslav Embassy after his death. After the war he held many leading positions in the Communist Party, but was best known to thousands of people throughout the country in and out of the Party as a tutor - wise, witty and with a gift for clarity of explanation and the desire to make his listeners think for themselves. He played a major part in the Marxist-Christian dialogue, where his compassion and respect for the views of others did much to find a basis for united efforts on immediate progressive policies. He served on the Committee of the Marx Memorial Library from 1967 until 1977, and was particularly helpful in advising on the educational programme, in recommending purchases of books and in pricing surplus books for sale. His passion for collecting material on the great struggles of the international working class movement was linked with a desire that it should be made accessible to future generations. Fully aware that he was being wildly impractical, he filled his house with journals, newspapers, leaflets, books, prints and pottery which would have required an enormous staff to organise and catalogue. All that could be said was that within that crowded house with overflowing shelves and piles on every available inch of floor-space there were islands of order in a vast sea of disorder - islands where his current work material was assembled. James had a deep reverence for and identification with the past struggles of the British working class movement, but this never took the form of nostalgia nor of failing to recognise what was new and positive in the Britain of the sixties and seventies. He was far ahead of many others, for example, in his recognition of the importance of the newly developing women! s movement, and was always forward looking, eager to build on what was positive, while learning from the past. At the time of his death James was as firm and committed as when he took his first political steps in 1933, but he had learned many lessons in that time, and sought to apply them to the real world of the 'seventies, fighting both against dogmatism and the abandonment of Marxist positions. Discussing with James, as I constantly did, what was to be the fate of all his material after his death, we covered each time the same ground, and always we would end in the same way. "That's your deciston'", he would say. "You'Il have to do whatever is possible at the time", and he would turn to current events and put behind him this problem, which in the mortgaged, damp, old Clapham house with fungus-threatened walls, bulging ceilings and books and papers in every corner, seemed to engulf us. Thus it was that in September 1977, when James died of a heart attack, no plans had been made, the full extent of the material had never been examined, and the future seemed very difficult indeed. 3

Certain principles soon became established. First, every scrap of paper, every folder, leaflet, photograph and print, not to mention the vast collection of books and pamphlets, had to be examined. A print in a brown paper bag might be found in a pile of colour supplements. James had begun with a beautiful, catalogued, collection on shelves. Forty years later the accumulation of his collecting, plus review copies, products of various book clubs, papers, leaflets, journals - all this became too much for a man in poor health, fully engaged in other work. Indeed, it would have been too much for a full-time staff of considerable size.

A CATALOGUE OF THE ARCHIVE James Klugmann’s records bequeathed to the MML now in 60 archive boxes. Apart from the odd photograph printed alongside his articles in the Morning Star, there are very few photographs in circulation of James or his family. He kept three early photographs of his parents and one of himself ‘punting’ on the river at Cambridge. He kept two sets of passport-type photographs that were taken in Egypt while he was in the British Army. The archive includes a photograph of the Chinese Student Delegation - of which James was a delegate - with Generalissimo and Madame Chang Kai Shek in June 1938. There is also a wonderful photograph of James with his sister Kitty (Cornforth), possibly at Cambridge. On her death, in 1965, James received a large number of condolence letters and cards from friends and colleagues of Kitty, all of which he kept and which are in the archive. Some photographs of James are in the Marxist-Christian Dialogue section of the archive. Sixteen archive boxes make up the Dialogue, in which James was heavily involved. He gave talks and lectures and attended discussions and debates up and down the country. Well known personalities often attended these events, such as Iris Murdoch and Judi Dench. There are a few photographs, published in the Morning Star, of James with Paul Oestreicher of The British Council of Churches. James encountered Paul many times throughout the Dialogue and documents in the archive suggest that a close friendship developed between James and Paul and his wife Lore out of the mutual respect that they had for each other. James also kept records of their appearance on BBC’s “Viewpoint”, to discuss the Dialogue, on 28 th November 1968. 4

Perhaps one of the most complete records within the archive is box JK44, Marxist-Christian Dialogue, World Council of Churches. This was a conference that James attended in Geneva from 8th to 12th April 1968. According to his records it had been mainly Catholics that had taken part in the Dialogue and the conference would be an opportunity for Marxists to expand the Dialogue to include more Protestants. James discusses his attendance at the conference with John Gollan, General Secretary of the Communist Party, in various letters. The record contains the name badge that he wore for the duration of the conference, his travel itinerary and directions to the conference that were left in his hotel by the conference organiser. James also kept a number of business cards that he acquired on the visit as well as some notebooks in which he made notes during discussions. The Morning Star covered the conference on 17th April 1968. James was capable of 100 words per minute shorthand, yet he always wrote in longhand even when he was taking notes at discussions or lectures. He was able to speak several languages but although he received a number of letters and communiquĂŠs in European languages he always wrote back in English. James could actually read and speak French, German, Russian, Italian, Serbo-Croat, Spanish, Bulgarian and perhaps a few more eastern European languages. James spent many years working for Marxism Today and writing for the Daily Worker and the Morning Star and he kept copies of the articles he wrote in almost every instance. In many cases the hand-written copy of such articles are in the archive, the typed copies in others, and, in some instances, the proof copy before going to press as well as the final copy as printed in the relevant publication. For future researches, there are also a number of examples where one can see how James planned long articles or series of articles that he did for both publications. He kept three copies of his birth certificate, which was requested at different times throughout his life. He also kept school records and two copies of the publication, The Upper Sixth Former, which he was involved with at Gresham School in 1926.
